Free College Basketball Prediction From Doc's Sports : Take Villanova over Connecticut (12 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 18) Connecticut has simply not been good enough to compete so far in the Big East. And this isn't the year to struggle with so many capable teams in the league. There aren't many easy wins. Playing 'Nova in Philly definitely is not a good matchup for a UConn team that has dropped three of four to begin the conference slate. In the last couple of weeks, the Wildcats have produced strong wins over Kansas, Xavier and Creighton. I don't think a struggling Connecticut team will be able to keep up for much more than a half. Villanova is getting it done on both ends of the court, and this afternoon they'll overwhelm an ill-equipped opponent. 'Nova by double figures in this one.

Auburn is off their first loss of the season last time out at Alabama by a 83-64 count . I personally believe the Tigers have out performed their talent base this season, and I was not totally surprised by what happened . Meanwhile , Mike White’s Gators have gone 4-1 SU in their L/5 and have outscored their opposition at home by 10.9 ppg and have the motivation of revenge on board for their SEC exit last season to Bruce Pearls program. The Gators have mostly owned this series and are 21-3 SU L/24 meetings in this series and get my support here today.

The season figures show Purdue ranked 11th in the nation defensively giving up 59.6 points a game and Maryland having the 29th-stingiest defense allowing 61.4 points. Hence a low total here. But is the total low enough? I say no. There hasn't been a Purdue game all season in which more than 126 points were scored during regulation. The Boilermakers just held 14th-ranked Michigan State to 42 points this past Sunday. Maryland isn't shooting well. The Terrapins are averaging 56.6 points during their last three games and are off consecutive road losses to Iowa and Wisconsin. The Under has cashed 16 of the last 21 times following a game Maryland lost. The Terrapins are home now where they are unbeaten. Neither team plays at a quick pace. Maryland's offense isn't in good form. Purdue relies on its defense not offense. So this sets up has a grind down, defensive slugfest where every basket will be hotly contested.

Both teams are very poor shooting teams as Illinois is 310th in 3-point percentage at 30% while Northwestern is 280th at 31.2%. These teams combine to average just 11 made 3-pointers per game. It’s safe to say this is going to be a low-scoring game mostly played in the paint.
The Wildcats are only averaging 58 points per game on the road in Big Ten play. Illinois has held its Big Ten opponents to just 50 points per game at home this year. They held Rutgers to 51, Purdue to 37 and Michigan to 62.
