Solid contest in the league here between a couple teams who really need a W, especially Eastern who has played 7 straight road games and are home for the first time since December 7th...no joke!
I think they have a solid chance at getting back on top and suffocating Jacksonville State who are back on the road after hosting a couple of doozies in Murray and Peay and not quite eking out a win in either...tough to get back up for this with dejection and travel and 0-4 opponent

Ridiculously bad spot for a (lack of a better term) ridiculously bad team....and not enough points as I rate this in the upper teens...before capping things like travel and matchups specific to this game....remember it is 6 hours just to get to the beautiful island and face a solid Rainbow bball squad.

Darrin Horn has done a great job so far in his first season with the Northern Kentucky Norse, but sooner or later not having Dantez Walton in the lineup is going to creep up on them.* The Penguins of Youngstown State are a veteran basketball team that share the ball well and every player on this team can rebound the basketball.* This team is very active with the defensive trap which causes a lot of turnovers.* I think this spread is a little bit too high.**Take Youngstown State.

Memphis is a talented young basketball team that is now one of the best teams in the nation at bringing the biggest high school players to their program.* It would have been cool to see this team with Wiseman playing the full year.* Cincinnati has a new coach in John Brannen.* I am not sure if he will be the right fit for this program, but there is no doubt these players are grown men and you will be able to see the size advantage not just in height but physical mass.* *This is a tough building to win in, but I believe the Bearcats are built just right to beat up on this young talented team.**Take Cincinnati.

These two teams get together tonight with a lot of experience.* Both teams are off to good starts this year.* I just don’t believe that there is this much of a talent gap between the two programs.* The Bears of Northern Colorado have not been good on the defensive end either.* These teams have played each other tight over the last few seasons and I expect nothing different tonight.* Brian Katz is now in his 12th year coaching the Hornets and he should have his team ready to go tonight on the road.* There is value with the underdog.**Take Sacramento State.

The Redbirds took 2 of 3 games last year.* The bad news is their one loss knocked them out of the Missouri Valley Tournament.* It was one of those games in which they got down early and were done by halftime.* Drake has the better record this year, but I don’t think this team is almost 8 points better against the spread.* This Illinois State has a lot of transfers and I believe this will be a low scoring feel out game for each team.* Tremell Murphy being out for the season with a quad injury makes Drake vulnerable at the forward position.* I believe this spread is too high.**Take Illinois State.

BYU is not going to have leading scorer and rebounder Yoeli Childs in the lineup tonight. They have a HUGE game against Gonzaga on deck. No surprise, then, that the betting markets are knee-jerking towards San Diego as road underdogs in Provo tonight, driving this line down to -15, even lower at many books.
But BYU has shown they can dominate without Childs. They played the first month of the season without him. They played the last week without him as well, including a 26 point win vs Portland and a tight OT, spread covering loss at St Mary’s. The Childs injury would matter against Gonzaga. It doesn’t mean much against this caliber of opposition.
And make no mistake about it – BYU is NOT looking past the Toreros tonight, not after San Diego ended their season last year with a monster blowout over the Cougars in the West Coast Conference Tournament last March; a game where the Cougs hit only 1-17 from three point range.
BYU senior leader Dalton Nixon, talking about their focus level against San Diego tonight: “What we took from (the loss in the tourney last year) is, any team in this conference can get us if we don’t show up. That’s what we’ve been able to learn. On any given night, if we don’t give 100% effort, anyone can beat us. We’ll be ready. We don’t want anything like that to happen in any game that we play. We’re really excited to be able to have a little bit of revenge from last year and also build on what we’ve been doing so far this year. There are so many good teams in the league. We may have been in a position last year where we were just expecting to get past the first round and see Saint Mary’s in the semifinals. We’ve learned from that. Now that we have a lot of seniors on the team, we’ve been through some really tough games like that.”
BYU head coach Mark Pope, talking about the potential distraction of Gonzaga on deck: “In this case, it’s easy to say overlooking San Diego for the Zags. But really what it is, is overlooking a game. These guys, so far, in the first half of the season, have been unbelievable at honing in at the task at hand. It’s going to do us no good to go have a great game against the Zags if we don’t come compete and play as hard as we’ve ever played against San Diego. It just doesn’t do us any good. We don’t have time to waste. We have to get better every single day. You don’t do that by thinking about Saturday when you’ve got Thursday and Friday to go. I trust these guys. It’s human nature to get distracted by anything. That’s what everybody’s fighting all the time — the ability to stay focused. So far, these guys have proven to be really adept at being locked in and focused.”
San Diego was a 20+ win senior laden team when they knocked off BYU last March, but four senior starters graduated and the results have been pretty dramatic – they’re winless in their first four conference games, SU and ATS. The Toreros have been blown off the floor twice in their last three games, including a 44 point home loss to the Zags, and they’re primed for another ugly showing against a particularly motivated foe tonight!
