Friday CBB Free play. My selection is on Brown minus the points over Cornell at 7 pm et on Friday.
This is a solid blowout spot for Brown as it hosts Cornell on Friday night. The Big Red check in winners of three of four games here in January but it's not as if they've faced a tough slate of opponents. In fact, only two of those games came against Division I opponents, both against 6-12 Columbia and they only managed to split those contests. Cornell has yet to post a road win this season. Brown has dropped back-to-back games entering this one, but both of those losses came against 14-4 Yale. The Bears have yet to drop a game against a losing opponent here at home this season, albeit in a small sample size. The last time these two squads met last March Brown rolled to a 24-point victory. Take Brown (8*).

The Chicago Bulls 19-31 (23-26-1 ATS) head east on Friday night to take on the Brooklyn Nets 20-26 (20-26 ATS). The Nets will try to make it back-to-back wins. The Nets are currently a -5pt favorite and the Over/Under is set at 220.5. Carter, Markkanen, and Carter Jr. are OUT for the Bulls in this one, and for the Nets obviously Durant is still out, and Temple is a GTD.
Last game out in a Bulls loss LaVine scored 20 points but went 7-of-23 from the floor, including 1-of-11 from beyond the arc, how he goes is how goes the Bulls night in and night out. For the Nets they had 3x 20+ point scorers in their game on Wednesday (a win over Detroit). Irving has played in just 18 games in 2019/20 but leads the Nets in scoring with 26PPG game while adding 6.6 assists per game.
Some trends to consider. Chicago are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games against Brooklyn, are 1-7 SU in their last 8 games against Brooklyn, and are 1-4 SU in their last 5 games on the road. Brooklyn are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games when playing at home against Chicago, lastly the Nets are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 Friday games.
My X-Factor's in this game are the rebounding duo of De'andre Jordan, and Jarrett Allen who are both averaging over 9.5RPG. With their injuries I just don't think the Bulls will get enough second chance opportunities, and with their 44% FG shooting percentage I don't see a way they can keep up.
I don't see the Bulls keeping this one too close and predict a 9-10 point win for the Nets, backed by an emotional Kyrie Irving who I think you'll see carry his team on his back for the rest of the season backed by the motivational factor of losing his good friend Kobe Bryant.

The set-up: Carolina comes back from the break looking for a win here. The Hurricanes have seen the total go "under" in seven straight, but I expect a higher-scoring affair here after the longer lay-off. The Hurricanes haven't played the Golden Knights since February 1st, 2019, but in that contest they posted the convincing 5-2 victory. Vegas went into the break losing six of its last seven and with a game tomorrow night in Nashville, followed by contests in Tampa Bay and Florida, before then returning home for a date vs. these very Hurricanes again, Las Vegas needs to come out and be the aggressor here from start to finish. Situationally I think this one definitely sets up as a higher-scoring game.
The pick: Additionally note that Vegas has seen the total go over the number in eight of its last 11 road games when playing with three or more days rest, while Carolina has seen the total fly over the number in ten of its last 15 after having seen the total go "under" in five or more straight contests. I think this one flies over sooner, rather than later.

The final Friday of January is rather quiet when it comes to betting on college basketball. However, there are a pair of matchups in the MAC and Atlantic 10 that could attract some attention from the public.

The early start sends the Akron Zips on the road to face the Kent State Golden Flashes. A little later Friday night, the VCU Rams head to Kingston to tangle with the Rhode Island Rams.

Betting Matchup

At 6-2 straight-up in conference play, the Zips are one game ahead of Kent State in the MAC standings and one game out of the lead held by Bowling Green. They are coming off Tuesday’s surprising 77-74 loss to Buffalo as 7 ½-point home favorites. They have now failed to cover in three of their last four games. Akron is 7-2 SU over its past nine games as part of an overall record of 16-5. It is 11-8 against the spread with the total staying UNDER in four of the last six games.

The Zips are averaging 77.8 points per game and allowing 65.2 points on defense.

Kent State (15-6 SU, 10-8-1 ATS) snapped a recent three-game skid (SU and ATS) with back-to-back road wins as an underdog against Buffalo and Toledo. It is 2-4 ATS over its last six games. With 83 points in Tuesday’s 13-point win against Toledo, the Golden Flashes were able to erase a 21-point deficit.

Troy Simons ended that game with 21 points. Kent State is averaging 78.3 PPG while giving up 69.0 points a game.

The Rams are 6-2 SU in conference play as part of an overall record of 16-5. One of those A 10 losses was a 65-56 setback at home to Rhode Island on Jan. 11. The Rams closed as 8 ½-point favorites in that game. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five outings.

Junior forward Marcus Santos-Silva leads all scorers with 13.2 points per game and he has a team-high 9.2 rebounds a game.

The other Rams in this matchup have a SU 7-1 mark in A 10 play. After an opening loss to Richmond, they have won their last seven games while going 6-1 ATS. The total has gone OVER in recent double-digit road victories against St. Bonaventure and George Mason after staying UNDER in the previous six games. Rhode Island is 15-5 SU with an 11-9 record ATS.
