I'll take my chances with LSU covering the 5.5-point spread on the road against Auburn. The Tigers had their 9-game winning streak and perfect 8-0 start to SEC play snapped in a surprising 90-99 loss at Vanderbilt on Wednesday, a game they were favored to win by 11.5 points.
There was a clear lack of effort on the defensive side of the ball in that game and I got to believe some of that was a result of them looking past a bad Commodores team to this game. Either way, that loss should have LSU even more locked in for this big showdown with Auburn.
On the flip side of this, I got big time concerns with Auburn coming out with the kind of energy needed to win at home by 6 or more. Auburn was in a battle at Arkansas on Tuesday, which they somehow managed to rally from double-digits down late to eventually win 79-76 in OT. That was on the heels of their big game at home against Kentucky last Saturday.
For me, I don't think Auburn's defense is going to be able to contain LSU's high-powered offensive attack. Auburn is a mere 10th in the SEC in effective field goal %. Where they make up for that is at the free throw line (No. 1 SEC in free throw rate).
Thing is, LSU is by far the best team in the SEC in terms of not fouling and letting teams get to the free throw line. LSU is also really good at getting to the free throw line and Auburn is 10th in defensive free throw rate. I just don't see Auburn pulling away and actually like LSU to win outright. Give me LSU +5.5!

I understand there are better things to do on a Saturday - or any other day of the week for that matter - than pay attention to a Rice-Middle Tennessee State basketball game. But I see value backing Middle Tennessee State for these reasons: The Blue Raiders are home, in a good situational spot and Rice is very bad on the road. The Blue Raiders were showing signs of getting turned around winning two of three after losing 11 in a row. But then they lost, 75-70, as 8 1/2-point home favorites to North Texas in their last game this past Thursday. North Texas hit 52 percent of its shots from the floor and the Blue Raiders missed 14 of 28 free throws. They are a 67 percent free throw shooting team. Rice, meanwhile, just upset Alabama-Birmingham as seven-point road 'dogs two days ago. That was the Owls' second consecutive win. Hence, early activity in the marketplace has brought this line down to the pick'em type range. I don't believe the line should be that tight, though. Rice hasn't won three straight games since mid-November. The Owls had dropped their previous six road contests before surprising the Blazers. Rice had lost its prior three away matchups by an average of 16.3 points. The Owls average 66 points on the road, which is seven points fewer per game than their regular average.
Middle Tennessee State is a grinder type team that can frustrate Rice. I see that happening here.

The Blue Jackets are absolutely rolling right now with goaltender Elvis Merzlikins on an incredible run to pave the way. Off another shutout victory last night I look for them to keep it going against the similarly-surging Avalanche on Saturday. Colorado is coming off a blowout win last time out but that came against the lowly Senators. The Avs will face a tougher challenge here and I believe the wrong team is favored. Take Columbus (8*).

The Dallas Stars (30-19-5) play the second half of a back to back on Saturday night vs. the defending Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues. (32-15-8). We expect to see Khudobin in net for Dallas, and Binnington in net for St. Louis.
We're going back to the well tonight with this Stars team to be involved in a game that goes UNDER the total. We cashed last night between them and the Wild UNDER the total with one of our premium plays.
St. Louis had an 11-game home point streak snapped (10-0-1) with a 4-2 loss to Winnipeg on Thursday and is 2-5-1 in its last eight games. To add insult to injury the Blues can't score with the man advantage. The Blues have come up empty in their last twenty 5-on-3 power play advantages covering 23:33. Dallas will keep this one close, as they always get up for big Saturday night games, and this my friends is big. Under is 21-4-2 in the Stars' last 27 Saturday games.
Some betting trends to consider. The total has gone UNDER in 4 of St. Louis' last 5 games against Dallas, UNDER in 6 of St. Louis' last 8 games when playing at home against Dallas, and the total has gone UNDER in 5 of Dallas' last 6 games against an opponent in the West conference.
I'm expecting a 3-1 or 3-2 game here that could go either way, a small play on the UNDER as we hope that this doesn't get spoiled by an empty net goal to push the total over.
Play the UNDER 5.5 on Saturday night.

The set-up: I base my picks on many different things and this one falls under the category of "great situational play." St. Louis has lost six of its last ten, including a 4-2 setback to Winnipeg last time out. With a two-game road trip upcoming at Anaheim and Vegas, tonight's contest takes on added importance for the defending champs. Dallas does play with "revenge" here, but it's in action at home vs. the Wild on Friday and I think it'll predictably come into this contest with "heavy legs."
The pick: And with two whole nights off after tonight's game before a home contest vs. Carolina, I think Dallas is also in trouble of getting caught "looking ahead." If you don't mind laying chalk, I think the home side offers great value to bounce back on Saturday night.
