Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 1, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
Northfield Park should attract a great deal of attention tonight as they stand alone as the only harness track racing. My focus will be on the Late Pick 4 which has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The sequence has a 14% takeout and the pool should end up well north of the guarantee.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11

2-Manny L (7/2)-Came off the bench with an in control win in first start on Lasix. Steps-up, so this will be a stiffer test, but barn has been hot. Should be tighter and might be even better tonight.
3-Chestnut Schofield (7-1)-Looking for a price and tossing 1st start off a layoff. Blenheim raced huge that night and this guy broke slowly. Gets post relief and has won Opens here. Looney barn has been hot and will look for a big try.
5-Outburst (7/2)-Burke trainee was caught racing in the back with slow leavers in qualifier. Should like the company and could be sitting on a big try, but might be over bet.
7-Blenheim (3-1)-Hitchcock barn is winning at a 45% clip and last week this 7-year-old got on the engine and drew off by 7 all on its own. Looks like a major threat with a clean trip but may not be able to get the top from this post.

    Race 12

2-Stride Of Pride (5-1)-Even effort in 1st start off the bench. Might be able to make the most of an inside post draw and get the jump on main foes.
4-The Wayfaring Man (5-1)-Faded in qualifier but pace was quick. Looney trainee shows up versus this kind and loves the track. In 20 starts at Nfld, has hit the the board 15 times with 8-wins and should be a square price.
5-Major Nemesis (5/2)-Has only raced a total of 12-times in '18 and '19 but has won 14 of 32 at Nfld. Moves up after a sharp effort last week and still fits with this crew. Best to respect but won't offer any value.

    Race 13

1-Beach Shootingstar (9-1)-Tossing last start from the 8-hole and has won 9 of 35 at Nfld. Gets significant post relief and can be in the mix at this level when forwardly placed. Should be a price and will look to use in gimmicks as well.
2- Guns An Roses (3-1)-12-year-old had a big effort from the 9-hole in 1st start of the meet. Holzman barn has won 2 of 5 starts and 12-year-old should make the most of this starting spot.
5-Dance Life Well (2-1)-Wasn't really challenged after getting an early lead and won with a well rated mile. Best to not overlook but could face a stiffer challenge this evening.

    Race 14

5-Driving Miss Sadie (2-1)-Nice effort against better and now drops to a more comfortable level. Loses Hall but Sugg knows well. Has won 25% of Nfld starts and appears to be a clean trip away from a picture.

    $1 Pick 4

    2,3,5,7/2,4,5/1,2,5/5
    Total Bet=$36

      #3
      Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #1
#6 Way to Success Hawthorne miss hasn't been out since Dec., so this break is a concern, but the post is perfect, she meets a ridiculously weak field, and yet may not even be favored; love her chances.
#1 Langue Liee ML favorite was a decent 5th on turf against winners, drops slightly, cuts back, and returns to the dirt, all positives, though at 1-for-14 and a short price, she's not appealing; second-best.
#3 Lovely Arabella Turf/synthetic runner has never tried dirt but is bred for it on the bottom, and it's not like the top pair are any great shakes, so if she takes to it, she's be in with a chance; exotics threat.
Race Summary That 5-2 ML would be a gift on the 6, as not only does she look best, she drew best too, and if the 1 is her biggest threat, then there's clearly not much to be worried about, so play her aggressively to win and place at 8-5 or better, while getting some added value by singling her to kick off the early Pk5, as that's not a move the betting public likes to make, which means you can maximize here value, while obviously clearly the path for more maneuverability in the remaining four legs.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #4
#5 Papa's Place Lightly raced runner did't fire on dirt on debut then got to the turf and really improved, and while this is a rise in class, his upside and price are too good to pass up; look out.
#8 Cark The chalk will be bet hard off the good Midatlantic form, but note he hasn't been out since September, so he could need this, at underlaid odds as well; clearly the main danger.
#2 Capture the Ride WO runner ran well on the Tapeta when last seen in Dec. and is better now than the no-show 9th in his lone turf try, but this is likely a prep for the Great White North; tabbing.
Race Summary You won't get rich on the 5 but if they send it in on the 8 you may sneak out that 7-2 ML, which would seem very fair on a runner who should only build off that turf trial run, so play him to win and place, and especially in the early Pk5/Pk4 as well, since a win would knock out a lot of tickets hoping the 8, and possibly even the 2, are ready to fire off the extended layoffs.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #7
#2 Fran's Salsa Price player was a solid 4h off the break and trainer change at the level last time, and while that still puts her behind a few of these, she has every right to build off that return, so if she improves as expected, there's no reason she can play with a group like this; upset special.
#3 Takin it Easy ML favorite really improved when a good, albeit distant, 3rd last time, in what was a very fast race for the level, though repeating today it could be a bit of a problem, as the dreaded bounce may be in play here, not to mention the 15-1 last time in long gone today; second-best.
#8 I'm Nasty Too Pace presser didn't fire when last seen at Hawthorne in October, so the layoff and subsequent trainer change is a worry, but she's now with Bennett, who is aces here, and main man Gallardo is here too, so you're allowed to think she's going to fire her shot; expecting a good run.
Race Summary The price should be right on the 2, who has the look of a miss who is going to take a step forward here, and with the 3 potentially coming back to the field, and the 8 a bit of an unknown off the break, taking 5-1 on an in-form filly who should run well doesn't seem so bad, so play her in all the slots, and especially the late Pk5/Pk4, as there's a chance she falls through the wagering cracks, which means a win would add plenty of value to both sequences.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Lone Star - Race #2
#9 Hecouldgoalltheway Taking a big swing here off the dreadful debut run, as he'll add blinkers, and it's worth noting that his being sent off at 9/1 on debut actually meant he took a bit of action considering the barn's woeful first-out numbers. Worth a flyer.
#8 Pure Speculation The top choice will be too big a price, and this guy is probably too short a price. He's the clear one to beat, but his only career turf try wasn't much to write home about, even if it came with better. Wouldn't argue with anyone landing here.
#10 Bee Bridge Tactical type tends to give away ground late, but he has never tried racing around one turn and gets into the easiest spot he has seen to date. Still, I think I'd want better than the 4/1 ML offering.
Race Summary Hecouldgoalltheway showed absolutely nothing in the debut run, but I'll give him a look at a better price today while dropping with blinkers.
        Lone Star - Race #5
#8 Lady Gwen Has a right to be tough with this group on the cutback, as her route pace should keep her in touch enough early to make a move from a spying spot.
#1 Hailey's Day Stayed until mid-stretch in that only lifetime turf try, and that came with a deeper FG group. Rail draw doesn't do her any favors, but perhaps she's an underneath player.
#9 Nautical Gem Hasn't shown much at all since the Canterbury debut win, but both of those tries came with better groups, and maybe the surface switch will wake her up today.
Race Summary Lady Gwen is the likely chalk and looks tough to get past here. She has cutback route back in a very soft field for this level and has classier running lines than many in here.
        Lone Star - Race #6
#7 Wasabi Girl Has been in tough in a handful of recent starts and should appreciate this softer group today. She's capable of something better here, and the price should still be fair.
#3 Play Unified Has solid company lines as well, but she doesn't have to win this and will probably get a bit overbet here.
#4 Karate Hottie Has held good form throughout almost her entire career, and she'll be in line for another great trip right up on the splits.
Race Summary Wasabi Girl has some back races that would be competitive here, and she deserves a pass for those stakes tries. Her last wasn't much, but this group might be a bit more to her liking.

          Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

          Laurel Park - Race #4
#5 Midnight Cry Has exceptional early speed, can carve out fractions here and should be able to handle on; won two back and takes a class drop.
#12 Lion Lord Has decent speed and will likely be close up; will have to overcome the outside post.
#1 Ticker Tape Parade Has been a decent closer and will get a lively pace in front of him; goes for 3rd straight win.
Race Summary Midnight Cry has the speed to get to the lead and can reach to find some additional class; has beaten better.
          Laurel Park - Race #6
#2 Awesome D J Was tremendous at this distance two back when he rallied against slow fractions and drew to an easy win; didn't do well following up going 1 1-4 miles, but turns back and can be a serious late threat again.
#9 V.I.P. Code Crushed rivals at Parx in two starter allowances after being claimed for this price; has won 3 of 8 over this strip and will be get some excessive play.
#10 Savvy Street Has enough speed to gained good position into the turn, could be a major surprise if he gets to the front end.
Race Summary Awesome D J was a standout at this distance two back and can be a strong factor down the lane; an option away from the heavy favorite.
          Laurel Park - Race #9
#3 Midship Lady Lost by a nose two back and has been taking on better than these; can be tough in her 1st of the year.
#6 Hello Beautiful Has breezed in her races against Maryland-breds and lost a photo at this level in September; strong on the front end.
#8 Glittering Judy Has been in with good allowance fillies and mares and can press throughout; worth a look at the price.
Race Summary Midship Lady has some class to her as she's run vs. open company and has performed well; should be difficult to beat here.

                Laurel - Race #7 - Post: 3:40pm - Maiden Special - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $40,000 Class Rating: 85

                Rating:

                #16 WALK UP MUSIC (ML=6/1)
                #15 SURVEY (IRE) (ML=12/1)

WALK UP MUSIC - Delacour has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to watch out for the longer priced half. Ran in the last race against a tougher field at Gulfstream Park. The move down the class scale should suit him well. SURVEY (IRE) - Look at this pattern of improvement. 67/76/78 are the last three Equibase speed figs.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #2 WELLING (ML=3/1), #13 CHAMPAGNE DIET (ML=3/1), #5 KENDAMA (ML=7/2),

WELLING - Displayed hints of physical problems in the race on March 6th at Laurel. Unlikely that the rating he notched on Mar 6th will be good enough in this affair. CHAMPAGNE DIET - This filly didn't do much for me last time out. This probable favorite probably needs at least one race to get back into shape. Skip her today. KENDAMA - Don't think this horse is worth 7/2 in this race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #16 WALK UP MUSIC on the win end if we get at least 8/5 odds
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [15,16]

                TRIFECTA WAGERS:

                  Race 5 - Claiming - 5.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $6200 Class Rating: 52

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE MAY 1 ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $4,000

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 8 KATEANDLILLIAN 5/1
                  # 10 BRADY TO GRONK 8/1
                  # 1 BAYTOWN MILLI 6/1
My choice here is KATEANDLILLIAN. Will almost certainly compete well in the early speed clash which bodes well with this group. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Clouston have shown very solid results recently. Looks very good for the conditions of this competition today, showing solid figs in dirt sprint races recently. BRADY TO GRONK - Has to be given consideration based on the competitive Equibase speed fig recorded in the last competition. This filly looks very good for this event since Clouston has a sharp win percentage with horses going this distance. BAYTOWN MILLI - McEntee has her trained quite well to break quickly out of the gate.

Lone Star Park - Race #2 - Post: 2:07pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 70

                    Rating:

                    #7 MR. SCISSORS (ML=5/1)
                    #13 LEBRON J (ML=6/1)

MR. SCISSORS - Horses out of the barn of Broberg have been great on the turf. I'd expect a strong performance. Taking a trip to a lower class rank; has the ability to make his presence felt. LEBRON J - Elliott and Asmussen have had wonderful success together over the last 12 months. Looking at today's class rating, this thoroughbred is meeting an easier field than last time out at Sam Houston.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #8 PURE SPECULATION (ML=2/1), #10 BEE BRIDGE (ML=4/1), #12 ROYAL BERTRANDO (ML=9/2),

PURE SPECULATION - This gelding hasn't had any recent good results in short distance affairs. Not easy to play him in this race. Recent dropping Equibase speed figures of 82/69/65 give an indication that this animal may be going off form. BEE BRIDGE - This horse hasn't shown very much in the last two affairs. ROYAL BERTRANDO - Unlikely for this racer to do much in today's event. The extended vacation is a troublesome sign. Can't wager on this vulnerable equine in today's sprint of 5 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint race recently. Won't be easy for this mount to beat this group off of that last fig. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put him on the questionable contenders list.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #7 MR. SCISSORS is going to be the play if we are getting 5/2 or better

                      # 6 VENDING MACHINE 4/1
HOOCHIECOOCHIE SAM supports the bet in here especially at such a decent 8/1. Handler has very strong win rate (15 percent) at this distance and surface. The big drop in class can only aid this entrant today. Posted a reliable Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest. TIZ FUNNY - Ought to go to the front end and may never look back. Expect this racer to be close at the finish versus these mounts. VENDING MACHINE - Could beat this group given the 80 speed figure posted in his last outing.
