Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Pick 5 Analysis

    June 8, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia

Woodbine Mohawk has 10-race card on tap for this evening. The popular 0.20 Pick 5 starts in Race 1 and will be my focus. The sequence has a $75,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 1

1-Mack (6-1)-Left in its qualifier on a "good" track and stayed inside in a quick 153.3 mile with a 26.3 last panel. This colt can get a similar trip here. If Filion protects his position and starts aggressively Mack could surprise at a price.
4-Indictable Hanover (2-1)-Coleman trainee won its qualifier and rolled away in a 56.2 back half. Should be ready for a big debut and will likely be bet hard.
6-Better Take It (5-1)-Betters Delight colt had multiple issues in his freshman campaign, so there are reasons to hesitate. But it's better to respect chances here as qualifier was really solid. Posted a 54.2 back half and a 26.3 last 1/4.

    Race 2

1-Sky Spirit (6-1)-Has had issues and is a breaking risk. But qualifier was good and now tries hopples for only the 2nd time. Seemed to like the bigger oval, can hang around if minds manners and should offer a fair price.
3-Heat Wave Hanover (3-1)-Has only hit the board once in seven starts. But now comes off a nice qualifier and finds a more comfortable spot. Best to respect, should like the company.
10-Windsong Patriot (3-1)-Has been off since last June and drops into a softer spot. The 2nd tier is a challenge but could follow #1 and get a decent seat. Might get sucked around if minds manners and roll by near the wire.

    Race 3

4-Smart Hill (6-1)-Four-year-old has earned over $215K at Wbsb and has the speed to go with this bunch. MacDonell can make the most of a good post draw and surprise at a square price.
8-Pikachu Hanover (3-1)-The shutdown may have come at a good time for this McNair trainee as his form was slipping. Has the gate speed to get on the engine or could grind his way around. Looks like a big threat if dialed on high.

    Race 4

1-White Hair Rocks (3-1)-Has only 1 win in 14 starts at Mohawk but draws the rail and this is a soft spot. McNair could get on the engine and not look back.
3-PL Jackson (5/2)-Similar to #1, could leave and be tough to collar. Should also like the company but lost the winning punch last year and has only 1-win in the last 40 starts.
10-Black Smile (8-1)-Price shot has made a living at ScD and other smaller ovals. Makes 1st start for the Budd barn and Henry can work a trip from the 2nd tier. Shows 151.1 speed at ScD, could be dangerous if put in striking range.

    Race 5

3-Captivate Hanover (6-1)-Went the short way around to pick-up a win in 5/28 qualifier. Did go the 2nd half in 55.1 and faced tough foes last year.
7-Beaumond Hanover (5/2)-Makes season debut after winning 4 of 5 starts in 2019. Tuned-up with a .55 back half to win qualifier and program chalk looks set for a big try.
9-Ideal Perception (9/2)-East coast invader makes 2020 debut for the Coleman barn. McClure may blast out and get the top. American Ideal 3-year-old could be tough to collar if takes to the track.

    0.20 Pick 5

    1,4,6/1,3,10/4,8/1,3,10/3,7,9
    Total Bet=$32.40

      Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

      Laurel Park - Race #1
      Picks Notes
#2 Bourbon Gal MSW speedster hasn't been out since dueling and finishing a close 4th on debut at Cnl, in a race that saw the top-2 win their next start, now adds Lasix, catches a crew filled with dirt runners, and has several works showing for this; imposing.
#1 Stylish Ninetynine Lightly raced filly tries turf off the Smith claim and herself comes out of a key race here last time, and this veteran barn doesn't claim a lot, so he must have saw something he liked, and the Lasix added should help as well; exotics appeal.
#6 Mable's Fable Experienced miss has plenty of turf form, and those runs last summer and fall would make her a player here with added maturity, so if she's ready off the Nov break, and there are six works showing, she can get a piece; rallies for a share.
Race Summary You certainly won't get rich on the 2, but that 9-5 ML seems fair and would be worth an aggressive win and place bet, though you can get some added value by singling her to kick off the early Pk5, as that's not a move the betting public likes to make in the opening leg of a horizontal sequence, and therefore you'll get more out of a filly that looks like she's found a crew she's supposed to dominate.

      Laurel Park - Race #4
      Picks Notes
#4 Jebologist Pace player chased some ridiculously hot splits sprinting against MSW foes on debut at Penn yet held remarkably well to be a close 2nd, could shake out as a Lone F on the 2-furlong stretchout, now moves into Lake's barn (17% with newcomers), and could offer a hint of value as well; look out.
#5 Silent Malice Stiff ML favorite just bombed at 3-5 in an MSW here in March and now takes the biggest drop in racing, which isn't a great sign, and while the two that beat him last time both came back to win, and he races as a first-time gelding too, he's tough to trust at or near this 9-5 number; trying to beat on top.
#8 Welling Major player actually just beat MSW runners last time only to be disqualified and placed 2nd due to a bumping issue in deep stretch, and he has experience going longer too, which will help here, but he's also got no upside, and he's another who is a bit tough to trust on the class drop; tread lightly here.
Race Summary That 9-2 ML on the pick sure seems like plenty of value, especially since he's got more upside than the two favorites combined and could have a race flow edge too, so platy him in all the slots, and especially the early Pk5/Pk4 as well, since he could get overlooked a bit, which means a win would knock out a lot of budget players who are siding with the two potentially vulnerable MSW droppers.

      Laurel Park - Race #6
      Picks Notes
#6 Aiken On Tap DePaz firster goes for a barn that is just 2-for-20 this year, but this is an outfit that has enjoyed major success in the past, is 5-for-15 in the MCL ranks, and was once potent with firsters, so with slew of works on display, in a race there for the taking, with main man Carasco named too, the thinking here is this one is very live; call in a real scramble.
#3 Boss Onthe Horizon Expected stiff ML favorite added blinks and Lasix and dueled through hot splits on the GP turf in his return and predictably tired against MSW foes, now takes the stiff drop, moves from Lynch to Ness, and should shake out on the lead off that try, which means he's going to be tough to reel in with that tightener behind him; the one to catch and beat.
#9 Dr. Rusty Raymond Stalker was a well-beaten 3rd at the level here when last seen in February, so he needs to hurry, but the run three-back might win this, and it's easy to excuse the sloppy run two-back, so if he's cycling back around to his best race then you could surmise today is the day, and that means he'll toss down an effort that would put him in the mix; price appeal.
Race Summary Tab the tote on the 6, as he's supposed to be taking money if he's live and ready to roll, and if that's the case then he can be played in all the slots, though you'll get some guaranteed value by using him in the late Pk5, and to kick off the late Pk4 as well, since he goes for a very clever barn, and won't need to be a freak to be able to play with a group like this at first-asking.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Mountaineer - Race #2
        Picks Notes
#8 Bring It On Home Ran well at Laurel on the lawn last fall, and perhaps the dull comeback race at Will Rogers can be forgiven with a surface switch looming today.
#9 Walkin Princess Dangerous speed should be rolling early, even at this shorter trip, and she has fired big shots off the bench in the past.
#3 Dewyalovemenow Turf sprint tries all stack up nicely here, and she wouldn't be a total surprise on top at a fair price. Include.
Race Summary Bring It On Home has an 0-for-5 turf record, but that last turf try at Laurel in October would almost surely handle these if she's able to get back to it.

        Mountaineer - Race #3
        Picks Notes
#3 Beautiful B Might not be quick enough, but she's the most reasonable alternative to the chalk in here, and her turf record has been solid with three exacta finishes from as many starts.
#5 Twice Golden Probably wins this at a short price, but this is a long layoff and not a serious power move to run here after a couple of really solid efforts in Southern California last year.
#8 Sweet Belen Rolled home at a short price for the new team last time out, and she's got enough pace to be a forward factor in this spot. Not impossible.
Race Summary Beautiful B is the most likely winner outside of Twice Golden, and I'm standing against that one on principle here at what figures to be a short price with some questions to answer.

        Mountaineer - Race #7
        Picks Notes
#7 Mesmerizing Pegasus Might be quick enough out of those CT races to make a dent at this abbreviated 2f trip. Price should be right, too.
#2 Bebopaleon Wouldn't want too short of a price here given the many underneath shares at this trip last year, but those came in better spots and he's the one to beat.
#5 Roskilde Prefer him underneath with these, and he might get a bit overbet here compared to his realistic chances of winning this.
Race Summary Mesmerizing Pegasus is worth a look as he cuts back off the short Charles Town runs as this quick dash might serve him well at a square price.

          Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

          Thistledown - Race #3
          Picks Notes
#1 Hickory Hill Was outrun in an allowance last time and was 2nd for this price two back at Will Rogers Downs; has a good closing move and looks good enough to get past this group.
#8 Creative Courage Hit the board in three of his last six and drops to his lowest level; should be very tough on class alone.
#2 City Storm Was 4th in an allowance race to end 2019 and was effective at this claiming price.
Race Summary Hickory Hill is a closer that will be set up by a decent pace here; several will want the lead, and that will play into his hand.

          Thistledown - Race #5
          Picks Notes
#2 Exclusive Donald Was an clear winner in his only start, which came at Tampa Bay Downs; steps up in class but looks like he could be strong on the front end of his return.
#8 Scared Warior Has been a regular in allowance races and can be close to the pace; capable of a big effort.
#6 Danefield Has been in much classier spots than this but has won been out in nearly a year; has stakes experience and fits here.
Race Summary Exclusive Donald was impressive in his only start and is quick enough to battle throughout this five-furlong test.

          Thistledown - Race #7
          Picks Notes
#12 Wicked Warrior Just missed in an optional claiming race at Tampa and is fast enough to overcome his outside post.
#6 Ohio Player Pressed the pace and finished 3rd in his last and has been in some good sprints; quick enough to be battle throughout.
#1 Serve Revenge Cold Was an allowance winner here last year, probably isn't fast enough to get to the lead and that might work in his favor; has a chance to carve out a good trip just off the leader.
Race Summary Wicked Warrior just missed in a good race at Tampa Bay and doesn't have to improve much off that one to get it done here.

                PURCHASE

                Lone Star Park - Race #10 - Post: 6:15pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,500 Class Rating: 83

                Rating:

                #11 MEME JO (ML=20/1)
                #9 KISSTHATBABYGOODBY (ML=5/1)
                #8 THE GINJA NINJA (ML=30/1)

MEME JO - Duhon drops him down to this class. You don't need too much more from the pp lines to think this one should run well at this level. Gelding's last race was against tougher open company. He's in with easier 'state breds' today. Finished out of the money last out at Sam Houston, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 20/1 makes me think he's got a chance. KISSTHATBABYGOODBY - Strong winning percentage this jock and handler pair have been putting together. Jockey jumped on this gelding's back for the 1st ride on Mar 17th. Should 'know' the animal even better this time. I think the shorter trip will help this gelding stay the trip. THE GINJA NINJA - I like to play horses that faced open company in their last race and drop into state bred races. This gelding fits the bill.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #12 GRAND BLING (ML=3/1), #10 DONTBEFOOLISH (ML=4/1), #13 SINGING ACES (ML=9/2),

GRAND BLING - No accomplishments for this less than sharp equine in a short distance contest over the last couple of months tells me that this colt is in a formidable circumstance DONTBEFOOLISH - I don't see this steed doing too much off of the extended time off. He probably needs a race or two to get back into good shape. Unlikely for this entrant to make a winning move with no success lately in a sprint event. The speed fig last race out doesn't fit very well in this clash when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this mount as a likely underpriced contender. SINGING ACES - This gelding hasn't had any in the money efforts in sprint events in the last sixty days. I'd like to see more preferred recent showings with M/L odds of 9/2.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #11 MEME JO to win. Have to have odds of at least 3/1 or better though
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [8,9,11]

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 122 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE MAY 8 ALLOWED 2 LBS. A RACE SINCE APRIL 8 ALLOWED 4 LBS.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 1A FLATTER ME PLEASE 5/2
                  # 8 SCARED WARIOR 7/2
                  # 4 FRITTONS GOLD 10/1
FLATTER ME PLEASE looks very good to best this field. Is difficult not to consider based on Speed Figures which have been competitive - 77 avg - of late. Earned a quite good speed figure last time out. With a nice class figure average of 82, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group. SCARED WARIOR - Look for a solid pace improvement from this equine who enters on Lasix today. Has to be given consideration based on the quite good Equibase Speed Fig earned in the last competition. FRITTONS GOLD - Has to be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last contest. He has been running admirably and the Speed Figures are among the best in this group.

Race 1 - Maiden Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $9000 Class Rating: 38

FOR ACCREDITED LA BRED MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 7 TWN PALMYSDESTINY 3/1
                    # 2 TAKILLA SHOTZ 5/1
                    # 3 ST TERESA 7/2
My pick in this race is TWN PALMYSDESTINY. Last time out, this filly ran against a much tougher crew. TAKILLA SHOTZ - A solid 61 avg class fig may give this filly a distinct class edge versus this group. Last time out, this filly faced a rougher bunch. ST TERESA - Will more than likely be one of the front-runners of the bunch going into the midpoint of the race. Her earnings per start in dirt sprint events alone makes you take a look at her.

                      Mountaineer Park - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $8,900 Class Rating: 84

                      Rating:

                      #5 TIZWAY'S WILD SON (ML=4/1)
                      #10 CLUTCH CATCH (ML=10/1)

TIZWAY'S WILD SON - This horse is racing on the turf for the first time. He should be tough, coming off a second place finish in his race on November 20th on a sluggish track. Looking at today's Equibase class figure, this horse is up against an easier group than in the last race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. Earnings per race is something that I think can be a very valuable factor. This horse is ranked numero uno in this group. CLUTCH CATCH - Bland has this gelding signed up for the right race.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #6 FEE WAIVER (ML=3/1), #4 SUPER ECHELON (ML=7/2), #9 BAKU DANCER (ML=9/2),

FEE WAIVER - Generally I need a sprinter to have some success lately in sprint races in order to support him. Hasn't been on the Mountaineer Park oval in the last three weeks. Cause for some concern. SUPER ECHELON - When you keep going back through the TrackMaster pps and don't see a victory recently, you have to say to yourself, 'Not worth it on this equine'. BAKU DANCER - Hard to bet on at 9/2 odds after the last two outings.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #5 TIZWAY'S WILD SON to win if you can get odds of 3/2 or more
