Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Early Pick 4 Analysis

      June 9, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
Tonight, Woodbine Mohawk Park has a competitive card scheduled with the Early 0.20 Pick 4 starting as usual in Race 4. The sequence should have a healthy pool, last night over $45,000 was bet on the Early Pick 4.

The driver with the hottest hands on Monday was Sylvain Filion with four wins. The top conditioner was Benoit Baillargeon who had three trips to the winner's circle.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 4

2-Solsbury Hill (5/2)-Comes off a decent 6/1 qualifier and Zeron should work a trip from this post. Makes Wbsb debut and looks like a player.
3-Massive Flirt (3-1)-Also qualified with a nice effort on 6/1. Going off past performances, this is the one to beat. Comes in with a perfect 2-2 record and has faced some tough company.
7-Nylander (6-1)-Will use after a sharp qualifier from the 8-hole on 6/2. Here is the price shot and could surprise with a decent pace and a live cover flow.

      Race 5

1-Crocadile Canyon (5/2)-Will bank on connections having this 10-year-old dialed on high for 1st start off the bench. Fits well with this crew and should take full advantage of the post draw.
7-EL Wild Spirit (15-1)-Will need to get a trip but knows how to win here. Post helps the price, has won 8 of 42 starts at Wbsb and Johnson should have 9-year-old ready to roll.
8-Tomy Terror (5-1)-Here's another veteran who shows up with this type of company. May leave and hope for the best. Makes 2nd start for Goddard barn off a claim and first race on 3/16 ended with a picture.

      Race 6

5-Spartan General (8-1)-Owned, driven, trained, and bred by Team Christoforou and qualified well. Trotted the back half in 57.3 and will use at a price if chalk stumbles.
8-Hot Wheelz (2-1)-Comes off a sharp qualifier and that was the 1st time without hopples. 3-year-old Team Jamieson trainee might be ready for a big try and should like the company.

      Race 7

1-LA Always Amartini (8-1)-Only 3 for the last 48 but this is a nice spot to improve on that record. Drury should have in striking range and could offer a square price.
4-Jan (4-1)-This mare is an on and off type but at this level it could be "go" time. Jamieson may look to get on the engine and stay in control throughout.
7-Twin B Tipster (6-1)-Qualified in winning fashion on 6/4 but has had trouble winning at this class. Looking for a solid effort coming off the bench and trying Lasix for the 1st time. Filion can work a trip and pop at a solid price.
10-Lovely Donna (5/2)-If this mare drew better, she might go off as an odds-on choice. Should relish the company but Saftic needs to provide a good steer. If #1 blasts out this race could set up nicely for Donna.

      0.20 Pick 4

      2,3,7/1,7,8/5,8/1,4,7,10
      Total Bet=$14.40

        Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

        Belterra Park - Race #5
#2 How's My Bud Kentucky invader has been facing better, especially last time at CD, so this drop could be a big wakeup, over a track he owns a win over too; look out.
#1 At Guard The chalk is 4-for-7 here, so you know he feels right at home, and the slight drop off the Martinez claim says they are shopping for a win; plenty scary.
#5 Stately Oak Pace presser drew well for his style, enters off a sharp TP win, and is another with success here in the past, and he will be a price as well; very playable.
Race Summary That 7-2 ML on the pick seems like fair value, especially with his new barn hitting at 23% on the year, and a drop in class off eons tougher at CD, so play him to win and place, and especially use his number to kick off the late Pk4, since a win over what could be a heavy favorite in the 1 will knock out plenty of budget tickets right off the bat.
        Belterra Park - Race #8
#4 Morgan's David Versatile sort was too far back at WRD last time yet closed well to be 4th, was facing better at Hou before that and ore than holding her own, and should trip off what looks like an abundance of speed; call to post the mild surprise.
#9 My Dark Secret ML longshot would offer a ton of value if she's 12-1, as not only has she been running well on the Poly at TP, but her dirt form seems best of these, and she's 8-3-3-1 over the local oval, so she may move up a lot here; do not ignore.
#7 Archie's Girl Streaking miss enters off three straight at TP but is another with plenty of solid dirt form to fall back on, is another who should benefit from the potential aggressive pace, and will roll late, albeit at a lost less than this 10-1 ML; using.
Race Summary There's a lot to like about the 4 in what is a deep and competitive race, most notably he's the one who has been running on the dirt all along, and against good groups in the Midwest as well, so play him in all the slots, and especially the late Pk4 as well, since a win in the 4-1 range, in a race where the betting public might have trouble, would add plenty of value to the sequence.
        Belterra Park - Race #1
#1 Sister's Creed Class dropper was in too tough against allowance foes off an MCL win, so this group will be more to her liking, and she also appears as the controlling speed too; looks long gone.
#6 Treasure Willburnya Fellow ALW dropper doesn't have the speed to be involved early but that might help late, as there are a few who will be chasing the pick, and might get starched; will be closing.
#5 Canustaytonight Logical sort just missed on the lead at the level, and this outside attack post helps, but she's not fast enough for the 1 early, and therefore may get leg weary late; tread lightly.
Race Summary You certainly won't get rich on the 1 but if she's near that 5-2 ML make an aggressive win and place bet, though you can get some added value by singling her to kick off the early Pk4, as that will maximize her value, and allow for more coverage in the deeper ensuing three legs, as she looks to have this modest field over a barrel.

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Lone Star - Race #2
#9 Bandy's Map Finished up well in that last one at Sam Houston, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him go favored here over the slight ML favorite....
#7 Majestic Day Tough to get past his 0-for-15 record, even if his running lines and performance figures stack up well with these, and he's likely to have plenty to do late.
#2 Just Ask Joel Has never been in this easy and can probably bounce back off the flat run last time out in special weight company at Will Rogers.
Race Summary Bandy's Map woke up when dropped to a similar level last time out at Sam Houston, and should be able to get first run on his deeper-finishing competition Majestic Day.
          Lone Star - Race #7
#8 Flatout Winner Taking a little shot against the very tough Diodoro entry as this guy owns a handful of really fast races. If he's able to bring his very best stuff, he can be a player at a nice number.
#1/1A Diodoro Entry Either half is capable of winning this race, but the price probably won't be much, especially if both go.
#5 Vice Versa Should be a significant forward player on the move around two turns, and he stayed on well in his only try at a mile around one turn at Churchill. Might get a bit lost on the board?
Race Summary Flatout Winner doesn't always fire, but his A-game seems competitive with the entry in here, and the price is going to be much more appealing.
          Lone Star - Race #9
#8 Tigerbeach Nothing creative here -- this guy should handle these. His turf form from California just looks better than what the rest in here can offer.
#1 Tumbling Sky Looked legit off the Saratoga debut win, but he floundered when stopping badly in both Oaklawn starts. Suppose you could give him excuses for tracks labeled 'good' and 'muddy' and hope he finds a home on the turf, but I'd want better than the 3/1 ML price to find out.
#5 Beta Lake Dangerous speed ran very well in a couple of tries at this trip at Sam Houston, and he can bounce back on the move back to the grass.
Race Summary Tigerbeach owns running lines that should prove tough for most of these to compete with, and the most interesting alternative, Tumbling Sky, probably won't offer a fair price given his terrible recent form.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Northfield Park - Race #4
#3 PARNELL Slowed by pace in return, price attached with Merriman.
#5 CHIP OR DON Earned $50k as 6yo, one to beat on drop for third start this year.
#1 SEAL SNIPER Burned money at this level, deserves another chance from rail.
Race Summary Parnell got up for third behind the pace-controlling favorite in his comeback race. He met several short-priced winners at the Meadows earlier in the year and lures Merriman to drivel. Play a 1-3-5 exacta box.
            Scioto Downs - Race #5
#8 RIGGLE WEALTH Appealing price play off big effort against lesser foes.
#5 OMEGA CAT Just missed under these conditions two starts back with pocket trip.
#9 STORMY WEST Held safe as odds-on winner, will be gunning for position early.
Race Summary Riggle Wealth waited on cover that never developed and still managed to blow past the odds-on favorite. He steps up in class but was Page’s choice on a triple call despite drawing post 8. Play 8-5 and 8-9 exactas.
            Scioto Downs - Race #12
#1 LIGHTNING ONMYFEET Classy 6-year-old benefits from duel in return race.
#3 CAPTAIN CULLY Discount latest, ran in fast heats at Miami Valley in spring.
#4 NVESTMENT BLUECHIP Question of readiness for 6-time winner last year, no Lasix today.
Race Summary Lightning Onmyfeet ranged up on the odds-on winner and dueled on the final turn before fading in the stretch. The $300k earner figures tough from the rail with that race under his belt. Play 1-3 and 1-4 exactas.

              Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

              Thistledown - Race #1
#1 Fancy Pants Was up in time vs. N4L company and is a legit threat to repeat; can stay in range and likely will make a strong late run.
#7 Tiger Lisa Was a clear winner last out and has been in vs. a higher level much of the time; serious contender.
#2 Anita Marie Usually battles for the lead and can be a strong player early on; can stick around for a major slice.
Race Summary Fancy Pants should be able to keep good inside position and can benefit from a good pace; one to hold off.
              Thistledown - Race #7
#3 Liberate Faded in a tough optional claimer at Tampa last time and had taken four of his first five start; he won his three races vs. Ohio-breds by a total of 23 lengths and is clearly the one to beat here.
#4 Jack Be Fast Was a clear winner in his last two and is troublesome when he gets to the front end.
#6 Candy Exchange Won three of his last six and has been in good state-bred races; does his best just off the pace.
Race Summary Liberate has a class advantage and tries to remain unbeaten in Ohio-bred races; stands out in this one.
              Thistledown - Race #8
#6 Cipherin' Sue Was up in time at Oaklawn and takes a step up in price, although she probably beat better than what she faces today; will have to rev up earlier than normal.
#7 Ryoan Was 2nd in her last two and should be in good position from the start; chance for big piece.
#5 Backsplash Has spent much of her time against stronger company than this; late threat.
Race Summary Cipherin' Sue goes for his second straight; spent the spring season at Oaklawn and can benefit from having run vs. good company.

                    Belterra Park - Race #2 - Post: 1:05pm - Allowance - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,400 Class Rating: 79

                    Rating:

                    #1 DANCENSING (ML=2/1)

DANCENSING - Taking a trip down the ladder based on class rating points; has the class to make her presence felt. This is the only real presser in the race.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 CHANNEL PRINCESS (ML=3/1), #5 ITSALLABOUTMEMEME (ML=7/2), #2 CENTERFOLD ANGEL (ML=5/1),

CHANNEL PRINCESS - You always believe this animal has a shot to win, but she just misses often. This questionable contender ran a common speed fig last out. She shouldn't improve and will probably lose today running that fig. ITSALLABOUTMEMEME - A bit of a less than stellar effort when this filly finished fourth. CENTERFOLD ANGEL - Would have to improve off that sixth place finish last time out of the box to make an impact here.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - DANCENSING - Put a wager on this filly. Number one in earnings per start and has a lot more to offer as well.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #1 DANCENSING to win if you can get odds of 1/1 or more

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 9 MORHAWK 8/5
                      # 3 SOURNOIS 10/1
                      # 7 JEGGYJEGGY 12/1
MORHAWK has a strong shot to take this race. Has performed strongly as of late in sprint races, posting a nifty 82 avg Equibase Speed Fig. Earned a very good Equibase Speed Fig last time out. He has been running strongly and the Equibase speed figs are among the strongest in this group of horses. SOURNOIS - He has a good opportunity for this event as conditioner, Caldwell, has solid win rate with horses going this distance. Caldwell has shown excellent profits (+122 ROI ) with horses in turf sprint events. JEGGYJEGGY - Looks decent for the conditions of this race today, showing solid numbers in turf sprint races recently.

                        # 3 PLASKA 12/1
                        # 1 DISCO CAT 3/1
                        # 5 LEGENDARY LARRY 5/1
PLASKA is my choice especially at 12/1. His 82 average has this gelding with among the most favorable Speed Figures in this event. With a nice class rating average of 93, has one of the most respectable class advantages in this field. Has performed well recently in sprint races, posting a nifty 82 avg Equibase speed fig. DISCO CAT - Looks very strong to be up on the front end at the first call. Could best this group of horses in this race based on the speed figure - 77 - of his last outing. LEGENDARY LARRY - This gelding has some longshot angles I like to bet on. Overall, has one of the best earnings per start in dirt sprint events in this field of horses.

                          Mountaineer Park - Race #4 - Post: 8:15pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $6,600 Class Rating: 84

                          Rating:

                          #5 VINNY BOY (ML=4/1)
                          #6 MUNTIJ (ML=6/1)

VINNY BOY - That 87 fig this gelding garnered in his last event tells me he's a major player this time. MUNTIJ - You always have to be on the lookout for profit making jockey/conditioner tandems; we have an instance right here.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #9 BIG GAME BOB (ML=5/2), #4 BINDER (ML=5/1), #8 SILENT STING (ML=6/1),

BIG GAME BOB - 5/2 is just too low of a reward to take on most any thoroughbred that has run poorly in back to back races. BINDER - The Brain always cautions me to stay away from ponies in sprint events that haven't hit the board in short distance events recently. SILENT STING - 6/1 odds isn't enough for this thoroughbred when looking at the most recent efforts. Finished seventh in his most recent race with a most unsatisfactory speed fig. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #5 VINNY BOY on the nose if you can get odds of 3/2 or more
