Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Pick 5 Analysis

Woodbine Mohawk Park has 10-races scheduled with the popular 0.20 Pick 5 starting in Race 1. The sequence has a $75,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 1

2-Only Take Cash (3-1)-Didn't need to show much speed in both qualifiers as this mare won in hand. This is the best horse if dialed on high. Has beaten tough foes, does well at Wbsb so it's a matter of how fast she will go in 1st start of 2020.
5-Zig Zig (4-1)-Moves up after a sharp score. Raced the back half in 55.4 all on his own. Looks like a player once again.
7-P L Matt (7/2)-Might be a better price than in recent efforts after a miscue in last start. 4-year-old has been very good this year and barn keeps sending out winners. Post makes for a better price and will overlook last break.

Race 2

5-Oceanview Magnum (7/5)-Technically stepping up in class but on 6/13 beat 3 from this field at even money in 151.4 on the engine. Should like the company, beat $30k claimers at Wbsb in February.

Race 3

1-Remember Titans (5/2)-On 6/11 was the 3/2 choice and lost by a neck. 0-9 record isn't inspiring but may catch a pocket trip behind #8.
5-Spartan General (5-1)-Improved in last outing and now tries hopples for the 2nd time. Raced the last half in 57.3 and had a 27.4 final quarter. Looking for continued improvement in 2nd career start at a square price.
8-Hayek (2-1)-Speed has been there in Big M starts and now joins the Baillargeon barn for 1st start of 2020. This is the 1st Wbsb start, should be bet hard and could break maiden in new barn.

Race 4

3-Better Take It (5/2)-Raced well in 1st start of 2020, came 2nd and had a 26.2 last quarter. Seems set for a big try but does show a couple of breaks last year. Looks like a real player if puts in a clean line.
6-Menlo Park (5-1)-Roy sticks after a qualifier on 6/4 and did race the back half in 56.3. 3-year-old has only 4 starts and did hit the board in every race. If the chalk doesn't mind manners, it could be time for a trip to the winner's circle.

Race 5

2-Ideal Perception (5/2)-Big-time effort in 2nd race off the restart from the 9-hole to just miss in 150.4. Should be difficult to beat with the inside post.
9-Night Watchman (5-1)-Won at a big price from the 9-hole, steps-up and is saddled with another bad post draw. But it's best to not overlook versus this crew off that sharp effort and should be a fair price.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #2

#3 Courage de Lion	Price player got to the turf last time and really woke up with a close 4th, meets a modest crew, and will offer plenty of value as well; upset special.
#1 K's Funhouse	Deserving favorite drops slightly in class off a good 4th, and both his turf runs are best here, though value isn't part of his package; second-best.
#6 Analyzeyourvision	Logical sort has several races showing that compete here, and his form is consistent, but he's also stuck in neutral with no upside; underneath only.
Race Summary	The price will be right on the 3, and there's no reason he can't build off what was a very encouraging turf debut, so give him a look in all the slots, an especially the early Pk5, and to kick off the early Pk4 as well, since a lot of people will view that last run as a fluke, even though he's got the right to have a big say against this type of group.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #4

#6 Mor Breeze	Lightly raced runner seems to be improving and still has some upside off just four starts, which is more than most of these can say, and while her two turf races to start her career weren't much, there's little doubt she's a better horse now; can surprise.
#5 Meanasasnake	The expected heavy favorite easily wins this with her best, but after 13 months off and a big trainer switch away from Joseph you're allowed to wonder what's left under the hood, especially at very underlaid odds too; taking a wait and see approach today.
#3 Vuyelwa	Lifetime maiden is 0-for-24 lifetime and 0-for-8 on turf, yet her best races give her a puncher's chance here, which says a lot about who she's facing, though taking this type on top will get you to the poor house quickly in this game; underneath, as always.
Race Summary	The price will be right on the 6, and it needs to be, as her two turf races leave a lot to be desired, but this is as much about who she's facing as it is about what she's done, so give her a look in all the slots, and especially the early Pk5/Pk4, and to kick off the late Pk5 as well, since if the chalk isn't ready off the long break, or is damaged goods, the pick will have that much more of a say than she might already.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #6

#3 Neat Street	Stalker has been running in some good races for the level and holding his own, and that close 3rd three-back puts him in the mix here, plus he drew better than his two main rivals, and will be a better price as well; call to post the mild surprise.
#8 King of Leinster	Deserving favorite is best on paper and drops in class too, which will only help, and any of his last three would win this, but he's also drawn wide, will be an underlaid price, and doesn't have a lot of early speed either; runs out of room in the lane.
#5 Agripino	The speed dueled through crazy splits last time and predictably came to a stop late, so how he responds today is a guess, but if he settles like he has before, and nobody pressures him, there's a chance he forgets to stop; dangerous if he clear.
Race Summary	You'll get fair value on the 3, and he's not far behind the 8 to begin with, and has a few more positives in his corner too, so play him in all the slots, and make sure to use him in the late Pk5/Pk4 as well, since the favorite is no lock, especially off that recent dud, and a win by the third-choice would add plenty of value to both sequences.

Mountaineer - Race #1

#4 Mr. Nobody	Not too thrilled about taking a short kind of number here in his 18th start, but this is a bad field and he can kick off the card with his graduation run tonight.
#6 Bungalow Flash	Even effort last out on the TP synthetic, and he might be able to translate that into something a little bit better around two turns on the grass.
#10 Brisky	Showed some pace before stopping in the only turf try, and that speed at least gives him some chance to try and wire these from the high draw.
Race Summary	Mr. Nobody should get another good trip from close range, and though he's out of excuses, he lands in a soft spot tonight and can finally get over the top.

Mountaineer - Race #2

#2 Beautiful B	Should hit hard here on the drop after getting that comeback race under her belt a couple weeks ago. Think she's tough here.
#7 Diamond Love	Has been in with better groups at Gulfstream, but she's a bit better going short than she is around two turns.
#3 Dynacastle	Brings pretty dull form to this turf debut, but she's out of a Dynaformer mare, so there is some hope the new footing will wake her up.
Race Summary	Beautiful B rolled by six the last time she tried racing for a tag, and she wasn't embarrassed in the comeback run, setting her up for something better today.

Mountaineer - Race #3

#7 Thalia's Song	Faced better in her only local turf try, and she owns some better back turf races elsewhere. Chance to improve at a square price on the drop in a spot where her finishing style should play well.
#8 Abeja Negra	Has not run well in three turf starts, but she figures to get outrun early behind solid splits and may be able to come running late at a big number.
#5 Explosive Package	That last one is really an exception to her form rather than the rule, so I wouldn't be interested in too short a number to find out if she can run back to it on the surface chance.
Race Summary	Thalia's Song meets a few stretchout speed types, and that should set things up nicely for her late run. She will need to fire fresh today, but the race shape flatters her, her best stuff is in line with what it'd take to win here.

#3 Strike	Front-runner from New York has been off since November and has trained well for Drury stable; has the class edge.
#5 Bizzee Channel	Showed speed in stakes and allowance races last year and can be expected to press every step of the way.
#9 Homebred	Broke his maiden in easy fashion two back and lost a three-horse photo in a optional-claiming race, both at Fair Grounds; has the talent to be a strong factor.
Race Summary	Strike was in some very strong races in New York and has resurfaced here after a change in barn; looks capable of scoring in his 1st here.

Indiana Grand - Race #1

#4 Gifted Justice	Has done well over this strip and seeks his first win since being claimed by the Brown stable; capable of getting a perfect trip just off the pace.
#1 Interference	Has two outstanding and easy wins here last year and ended the season in an allowance race; should be a force in his return to a $5,000 tag.
#5 Five Grand	Ended 2019 with two good performances and had a good work recently; could make a strong run vs. these.
Race Summary	Gifted Justice had several good races and can make a move vs. these; can adjust to any pace in this one.

Indiana Grand - Race #2

#4 Devil's Rule	Should benefit from have had a couple of races at Tampa and can be very tough in his return to Indiana Grand; broke his maiden in easy fashion last year.
#3 Will Knows	Closed strongly and just missed last time out; won five races over this strip last year.
#9 White Wolf	Beat bottom maiden-claimers at Churchill Downs; hasn't lived up to the $280K originally spent on him as a 2-year-old as well as the $40,000 through the claim box in his 1st start. Took a big step last time as it is clear he'd been over his head.
Race Summary	Devil's Rule finished mid-pack in a couple of claiming races at Tampa and can make a good run at the leaders in here.

I've got to go with TORNADO BOY. Has run solidly when moving a turf route race. Shows evidence of the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 53 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the most respectable in this group. In the upper half of earnings per start at the distance/surface in this lot. BUNGALOW FLASH - Must be given a chance given the class of races run recently. Has to be given consideration as he drops to compete against this softer lot. MR. NOBODY - Has to be considered against this field displaying solid numbers recently and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 62 under similar conditions. Can't overlook the connections here, a 15 winning percentage, one of the most respectable at getting into the winner's circle.

CHARLIES TICKET - I wouldn't worry too much about the layoff; this gelding is ready to run today. You'll be generating profits left and right by turning your bankroll onto this rider/handler combination. Ran last out against a high class rated field at Delta Downs. The move down in the class scale should suit him well. FRIENDLYPRODUCTION - Nieves and Smith getting together are a horse gambler's friend. I'll bet that this colt even surprised his connections when he made his first start on June 6th and finished first. Jock hops back on board after getting to know the magnificent animal by riding last out. That's always a good to see. Ranked number 1 in earnings per start. Another indication that this horse is classy. Have to give this colt a shot. Ran a good race last time around the track within the last 30 days.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 BOSTON BIND (ML=2/1), #8 SHOT ON WINDY HILL (ML=4/1), #1 BROTHER RICHIE (ML=6/1),

BOSTON BIND - A bit of a less than stellar try when this gelding finished tenth. Has been beaten as the public's choice back to back. A repeat is probably in store. SHOT ON WINDY HILL - This horse hasn't been hitting the board in either of his last couple of outings. BROTHER RICHIE - On a downward spiraling cycle. Speed ratings keep dropping. No value in investing on this runner. Probably won't improve off that Jun 6th affair. Garnered a mediocre speed figure last time out in an Allowance race on June 6th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that fig.
