Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Early Pick 5 Analysis

      June 29, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
The popular 0.20 Early Pick 5 at Woodbine Mohawk Park kicks-off the card and will be my focus. It is a competitive sequence with a $75,000 guaranteed pool and 15% takeout.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 1

1-Heid (15-1)-Not a bad effort in 1st start since 11/23. Now moves in from the 7-hole and should be a price. Roy steers again, he got him off the gate and kept the filly trotting.
4-Chelseas Magic (7/2)-Stayed trotting in qualifier and 1st start of the year. Went 57.3 in the 2nd half of the mile and should be in the hunt in a difficult race.
8-Enchanting Gal (9/2)-Last qualifier was good enough to take notice and raced the back half in 57.4. Should like the company and if gets the right trip it could be graduation time.

      Race 2

3-Betalady (6-1)-Comes off a sharp effort in a quick mile to finish 2nd. Barn has been doing well, likes the track, drew well and could offer a solid price. Might get the 2-hole behind the 7/5 chalk and is a use in gimmicks.
5-Alicorn (7/5)-Tuned up nicely and will be difficult to beat if dialed on high in 1st start of the year. Looks ready and this will be a single on many tickets.
8-Lauras Love (4-1)-This is a good test for this nice looking 3-year-old who has won 5 of 7 in 2020. McClure will have in play but will need a hot pace.

      Race 3

3-Yacht Seelster (7/2)-Raced the back half on 6/20 in .53 to come 2nd. 0-6 this year and McClure needs to work a favorable journey. Looking for a more aggressive start to be in striking range at the top of lane.
      4-Sweet N Fast N (3-1)-Takes a meaningful drop in 3rd race off the re-start. This looks a spot to pick-up a 3rd win in 11 starts this year.
6-Rock N Talkin (8-1)-Filion gets the catch drive on this 4-year-old who had 2 sharp local starts. Closed into some wicked fractions last time. Should be forwardly placed tonight and could add some juice to the Pick 5 payout.

      Race 4

2-Refi (6-1)-Left and got a perfect 2-hole trip and rolled by late. Won't be as easy this time but this is a sharp, handy horse. Offers some value at the ML odds of 6-1 and barn keeps winning.
3-Only Take Cash (5-1)-Raced evenly in 1st race since 11/14. McIntosh trainee has won 4 of 8 starts at Wbsb and fits with this group. this is another tough race and Henry should put in play early. Might be tight enough to take a picture.

      Race 5

2-Iwontdothatagain (7/2)-Loses Roy but gets McNair and more important now gets post relief. Has started from the 9-10 and 8 posts in last 3 and has been flying late. McNair may gun for the engine and steal a quarter in an interesting race.
3-Icy Blue Scooter (4-1)-Drops out of Preferreds into a spot to shine. JMac needs a good steer to capture 1st win in 2020. Looks like a major player and likes to takes pictures, was 16-30 in 2019.
4-Peace Out Posse (5-1)-This is the other Moreau trainee and Roy has some choices. Drops and also gets post relief. Best to not overlook and should offer a square price.

      0.20 Pick 5

      1,4,8/3,5,8/3,4,6/2,3/2,3,4
      Total Bet=$32.40

        Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

        Canterbury Park - Race #5
#2 Row the Boat Tampa invader is back with Van Winkle and has a decent 3rd showing in his last local dirt start, was facing much better this winter, got the run against winners out of the way last time, and could offer a hint of value as well; call in a scramble.
#7 General Miles Deep closer is another who was facing better of late, as those fields at OP and LS would look pretty salty when matched against this crew, so he clearly hits hard, though his lack of early speed is a major concern; may run out of room in the lane.
#5 Notte Oscura Tricky read has the form to play with the top-2 but also hasn't been out since September, and Scherer is 0-for-11 off this type of layoff, so while his best might win this, there's a good chance you have wait for next time to see it; tabbing today.
Race Summary That 5-1 ML seems fair on the 2, who knows the surroundings here, has a tactical edge on the 7, and drew well too, so play him in all the slots, and especially to kick off the 10% takeout Pk5 as well, since a win in the $12 range would add some value to the sequence right off the bat.
        Canterbury Park - Race #6
#4 Blame the Cake Class dropper will like getting away from CD MSW runners, as he was in over his head last time, but his form is solid, and he owns a stalking gear in what looks like a speedy race; look out.
#11 Plane Talk Cutback router found two turns too far at OP last time, and his sprint runs were very solid, which includes a 2nd on debut here, so he's going to hit hard, albeit at underlaid odds; must-use.
#3 Real Grace Tampa runner woke way up in his second start, when flying on the lead at 52-1 and holding 2nd in extremely fast time, but other speed says a bounce could be coming here; tread lightly.
Race Summary There's a lot to like about the 4, especially the expected race flow and the drop in class, not to mention the 4-1 ML seems very fair, so play him aggressively at 3-1 or better, while getting some added value by keying him in the 10% takeout Pk5, and to kick off the late Pk4 as well, since he looks primed to clean up on a group that will be by far the easiest he's seen in his four races.
        Canterbury Park - Race #8
#8 Starring John Wain Dangerous runner woke way up in his local debut last time, when a fast 2nd at the level after being overmatched at OP, and while 20-1-4-6 is tough to take, a lot of those were against groups a lot stiffer than this one; love his chances here.
#4 Most Amusing Router cuts back to what could be a very sharp 5Fs for him today, though he did have some solid sprint form at OP against comfortably better earlier this winter, and this is a solid class drop too, but still, he may get run off his feet; second-best.
#9 Front Office Odd ML favorite was 4th to the pick last time, so he needs to reverse that decision, though he did better to draw outside today, and owns a tactical edge as well, but the pick also seems more likely to improve than this one; not seeing it today.
Race Summary They'll probably hit the 4 hard, so you might sneak out that 4-1 ML on the pick, which would be fair, so play her to win and place, and especially in the 10% takeout Pk5, and late Pk4 as well, since she tipped her hand last time, and should only build off that here.

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Mountaineer - Race #3
#9 J W Ruckus Tactical type doesn't have a huge final gear, but he tends to show up with consistent efforts that stack up well with this bunch.
#6 Our Alibi Makes the turf debut tonight, and the overall form looks very competitive with these. Not 100% sold on the grass here, but his best stuff fits.
#8 Epic Has faced some decent groups on the turf over the course of the last year, and he can be finishing late from off the pace tonight.
Race Summary J W Ruckus brings a string of consistent synthetic efforts with him, and he has run well enough over the turf in the past to suggest he might be able to handle these at a square price.
          Mountaineer - Race #5
#4 Perfect Doll Took a bit of cash in the Mahoning Valley debut run when sent off at 5/1 against nine others, but she never picked her feet up that day. She might have something better to offer this time around.
#7 Inaweofnooneatall Big finishing effort in the debut makes her tough right back with these, but she might benefit from a bit closer trip tonight.
#6 Foot Rub Love Has had 14 chances, so she's out of excuses at this point, but she has some early speed and turned in a good effort in the local debut last time out.
Race Summary Perfect Doll might get a bit overlooked in a spot where Inawofnooneatall and Foot Rub Love might take the lion's share of cash, and she seemed a bit more well meant than her debut running line produced.
          Mountaineer - Race #7
#7 Honor Life Tossed a clunker with allowance company last time out, and the hope is that he'll be able to bounce back in this second start off the claim while getting a change in scenery.
#6 Freedonia Pace rolled a softer group last out, and he'll make a break for the front end in this spot, but he's likely to have a bit of company near the top and could be vulnerable late.
#3 Clickjab Forward player has some ability to relax just off the pace, and that might serve him well in a spot where Freedonia probably needs the front end.
Race Summary Honor Life seems like a good fit here in hopes that he'll bounce back off a dull run last out, but his previous form looks very competitive in this spot at a playable price.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Indiana Grand - Race #2
#6 Field Letters Rallied in her last three at Tampa and can make a run at this distance; capable of winning her 1st here.
#3 Princess Trina Held 2nd vs. better last time and can be a factor from the outset.
#2 Giro Kate Was 2nd and was claimed last out; had been in with much tougher than these before the drop. Fits with these.
Race Summary Field Letters is in top form and has an adjustable running style that makes her a big player here.
            Indiana Grand - Race #5
#8 Comfort Me Now Ran well going long last year and was an even 4th in a short sprint last out; will welcome the distance.
#3 Big Fudge Has won two of four starts and won a N2L allowance last out; makes his 1st try around two turns.
#1 King Justice Steps up in class but is in good form and has a consist late move; could surprise.
Race Summary Comfort Me Now ran well going long last year, had a 5F prep for this and can be close throughout.
            Indiana Grand - Race #7
#2 Jova Just missed last out after being claimed for $25,000 by Johnson in his 1st start of the year; lost a photo in a 5F race, which probably isn't his cup of tea. The additional furlong here will help him out.
#3 Little Kansas Comes in from Churchill, where he was outrun by top company; is back to Indiana breds and is an obvious contender.
#7 Operation Stevie Closed well for 4th last out after running at Oaklawn; has a 12 of 38 record at Indiana Grand.
Race Summary Jova lost a photo in his 1st for owner-trainer Johnson and can dig in going longer this time.

Race 5 - Maiden Special Weight - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $14100 Class Rating: 59

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES THREE YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 118 LBS.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 7 INAWEOFNOONEATALL 6/5
                  # 6 FOOT RUB LOVE 8/5
                  # 5 NANCY KNOWSTHEMATH 5/1
I lean toward INAWEOFNOONEATALL here. Her 60 average has this filly with among the best Equibase speed figs for this event. Change in Lasix (with second time Lasix) may be the recipe to a turnaround. Handler boasts strong win numbers at this distance and surface. FOOT RUB LOVE - Have to bet on this filly with the reliable earnings per start in dirt sprint contests. She has been running solidly and the speed figures are among the top in this field. NANCY KNOWSTHEMATH - The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Godsey running at this distance are the most respectable in this group of horses in this race. She looks formidable in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint.

                    Delaware Park - Race #6 - Post: 3:45pm - SO - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,000 Class Rating: 86

                    Rating:

                    #3 ALL GOOD TIMES (ML=4/1)

ALL GOOD TIMES - Trainer Rigattieri moves this animal down in class ranks to face a less competitive field. Look for a sharp race this time out. The jock/handler tandem of Centeno and Rigattieri has a strong return on investment together. Finished off the board last out at Tampa Bay Downs, but was within 5 lengths of the winner. Opening at 4/1 makes me think she's got a chance.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #5 DR. ANN (ML=7/5), #1 CHECKBOUNCIN BILLY (ML=7/2), #2 CAT GIUMARELLO (ML=8/1),

DR. ANN - I normally try to beat this kind of chalk. Extended vacation and no drop in level of competition. CHECKBOUNCIN BILLY - This horse hasn't been coming close at the finish recently. CAT GIUMARELLO - Hard to wager on a entrant that lays up for a long time then doesn't hit the board off the very long layoff. Finished sixth last time. Would have to move up to land in the top three in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #3 ALL GOOD TIMES on the win end if we get at least 1/1 odds
                    EXACTA WAGERS: 3 with 4

                      # 5 ZOEY RIA 20/1
My choice for this race is PURRSISTENT. Should expect a much better outing with the drop. With a nice Equibase class rating average of 71, has one of the best class advantages in this group. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (64 average) at today's distance and surface recently. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY - The Lasix change (with second time Lasix) may spark a turn around for this filly. Well above average win rate at this distance/surface.

                        #3 SHE'SFIRSTCLASS (ML=12/1)

BUCKY BE LUCKY - Expect better today as this filly gets Lasix for the 2nd time. SHE'SFIRSTCLASS - You always have to be on the patrol for profit making rider/trainer duos; we have an instance right here. Rider hops right back aloft after getting to know the horse by riding in the last race. That's always a good tip. Whylie is giving this one Lasix for the first time. A really smart move.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #2 PHARAOH'S DAUGHTER (ML=8/5), #2X GIRARDI (ML=8/5), #1 BROOKLYN HEIGHTS (ML=7/2),

PHARAOH'S DAUGHTER - Didn't look so good last time out. Probably won't make a winning move today. Should have at least hit the board in the last couple months in a sprint clash to be any kind of value at short odds in a sprint. The fig last race out doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this horse as a likely underpriced equine. GIRARDI - The morning-line favorite is vulnerable here with the lack of works. Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance events lately. Not probable to see her doing it today either. The fig in the last race doesn't fit very well in this clash when I look at the class figure of today's event. Mark this racer as a vulnerable competitor. BROOKLYN HEIGHTS - 7/2 is just not enough of a price to take on most any horse that has run poorly in back to back outings. No picnic to wager on any horse in a short distance affair at 7/2 when she hasn't shown any successful efforts in sprints in the last couple of months.
