Al Cimaglia: Scioto Downs Pick 5 Analysis

    June 30, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
Starting today, Scioto Downs drops Tuesday matinees for night racing and that could help grow the handle. The 0.50 Pick 5 begins in Race 5. The sequence has a $7,500 guaranteed pool with a low 14% takeout and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 5

3-Tivo Hanover (9/2)-Steps-up in 3rd local start after two sharp efforts from the 9-hole. Kaufman takes the lines and should be in the hunt at a fair price.
4-Mister Virgin (6-1)-Burke trainee is looking for 1st ScD win and Page took this 10-year-old over the 6,7 and 8. This isn't an easy race to read as no one in the field has won at this class.
7-Music Is Art (6-1)-Makes 1st start since 3/6 at YR. The 6/8 qualifier at ScD was solid and will take a swing with a fresh face who has been racing versus better. Leaving Burke's other pupil #6 out who is the program chalk and is 0-13 here.

    Race 6

1-Don't Fire (7-1)-1st time Lasix and will use at this price from the rail. Fits with this group and could be posing if Lasix kicks-in right away.
3-Exhibit Class (4-1)-This is a soft spot so will overlook break in last from post 9. Winner of >$116k in 2019 can bounce back in a big way tonight.
7-Team Jesse (5/2)-Will respect winner of 2 straight, one at Nfld and one here. Should be in the mix and doesn't have to get on the engine. Lightly raced 3-year-old can race off cover.

    Race 7

4-I M Mccited (4-1)-Suspecting Miller will make an early move to get the top to take command and not look back.
8-I Got The Diamonds (8-1)-Drops to a spot to cash the biggest check after making 2 starts coming off the bench versus better. Although 0-8 at ScD, can beat this field with a good trip.

    Race 8

8-Cambassador (2-1)-Did fade in last but will give a 2nd chance versus this group. 13-year-old likes to win, and connections have been rolling. Will single and look for a top effort.

    Race 9

3-Hunchie (3-1)-Winner of 9 starts in 46 races at ScD drops to the lowest level in quite a while. Should be ready for a big try but is best on a fast track.
5-Tiffany Marie (5/2)-This is actually a gelding who doesn't usually race at Scioto. Burke trainee does have 1 win in 3 starts at ScD. Similar to #3, should like the company and will likely be put in play early.

    0.50 Pick 5

    3,4,7/1,3,7/4,8/8/3,5
    Total Bet=$18

      #3
      Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

      Canterbury Park - Race #4
#8 Min Freya Lightly raced miss blitzed MSW foes off the break last time in what was a breakthrough effort, and while she now rises in class, and taking on winners is never easy, it's clear she has plenty of upside, and will offer a price as well; call right back.
#5 Rosie's Flower Heavy hitter blew up off the break last time, when a very fast 2nd at the level in what was by far a lifetime best, so a bounce could be in play here, though she could also move forward second-off, for a hot Rengstorf barn; plenty scary.
#7 Mrs. D's Concerto Pace player dueled then tired when well behind 'Flower in 3rd last time, so she needs a reversal, but the outside attack post helps, and she too is second-off the long break, and with just five lifetime starts, she has reason to move forward; using.
Race Summary The risk-reward on the 8 should be there, as she no doubt is looking up at the 5 and 7 on figures, but she tipped her hand last time and said she may be ready to do a lot better, so give her a look in all the slots, and especially to kick off the 10% takeout Pk5 as well, since a win over those two gals will knock a lot of tickets out right off the bat.
      Canterbury Park - Race #6
#10 Gone Crusing WRD invader has been facing better this year and really improved last time behind a rousing winner and second-place runner who came back to win, and now he drops back in with Mn-breds, for the first time for a tag; look out.
#11 Circle Me Bert Fellow returnee has also been facing open foes of late out of town and has plenty of tactical speed, so he'll get first run on the pick, though at 0-for-9 on the track and 3-1 on the ML, there's no value in this corner; second-best.
#1 Serry The trickiest of reads would win this by about 7 with his normal effort, but the problem said normal effort was last seen in 9/18, so there's a lot of rush to shake off, for a 1-for-30 barn, while breaking from the rail too; tabbing today.
Race Summary You're going to get fair value on the 10, since he was beaten a furlong and a half last time, but the figure stacks up with these, and it was a very good race for the level, and now this is a seismic drop in class, while he faces no one to fear either, so play him in all the slots, and especially in the 10% takeout Pk5, as well as the late Pk4, since a win would add value to both sequences, and he likely only needs to reproduce his last to get it done.
      Canterbury Park - Race #8
#6 Neverblink Midwest invader has been facing eons better in his three starts, while holding his own too, now faces a most local crew, and one with a ton of speed to set him up as well; imposing.
#1 Twirlincottoncandy Closer ran well in his last at San Houston, when he rallied nicely to be 2nd in what was his second lifetime run, and he's another who will like all the speed up front; the main danger.
#2 Mrs. Cougar The best of the locals was just a well-beaten 3rd at the level, and a repeat would put him in the mix for a slice, though beating the pick seems like a real reach; using underneath only.
Race Summary Swing as hard as you can if you sniff that 2-1 ML on the pick, as he looks more like 4-5, though you can get some value by singling him to end the 10% takeout Pk5, and late Pk4 as well, since he looks to have this field over a barrel, and singling will allow for more coverage in the deeper preceding races.

        #4
        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Mountaineer - Race #1
#9 Loopy Handled the turf very nicely last time out, and the early route pace should keep her in touch early on the cutback.
#7 Creative Credit Has shown little in two starts, but both of those came against much better groups than she's going to find here. Pace player.
#4 La Perla Can get the right kind of trip near the top in this one, and there's some chance that the move to the grass will wake her up a bit.
Race Summary Loopy can be tough here after showing that she could handle the turf in that route run last time out. She ran well sprinting in her debut, so the short turf run might be just what she needs.
        Mountaineer - Race #2
#10 Aktabantay Has been in with better company throughout his career, and though he's not what he once was, he can probably handle this softer group on the move back to the turf.
#5 King of New York Finished with some good energy last out in that comeback run, and if he moves forward off that run at all, he's right in the mix with these.
#6 Starling's Law Speed will try to mix it up early and stay on as long as he can. He won a couple of races locally at this level last year, and getting back to this kind of company should serve him well.
Race Summary Aktabantay has to prove that he still has enough to handle horses like King of New York and Starling's Law, but the price might be right to find out, and he has never seen a group this easy.
        Mountaineer - Race #3
#9 April Entry Big effort last out when trying the local turf for the first time, and something similar to that would make her a big danger from close range.
#7 Beautiful B Can improve here off the sprint comeback run, and she was a two-time winner over the local footing last year. One of the ones.
#2 Friday Can get a forward trip in her turf debut, and she appears to be working forwardly for this comeback run. Wouldn't surprise.
Race Summary April Entry steps up to face winners off a speedy score last time out, and she should be involved out of the gate again today.

          #5
          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          The Meadows - Race #2
#3 RED SNAPPER Race two back was okay, moves outside in, worth a flyer.
#7 AS SEELY PROMISED Skipped a week after she bore out in deep stretch and got caught by the fave.
#4 ASHLEE’S FINE LADY Carried speed to the stretch against repeat winner, third start of cycle.
Race Summary With knocks on several of the favorites, try to knock down the door with longshot Red Snapper (20-1). She rallied widest and galloped out strongly two starts back against similar foes, then didn’t factor from post 8 last week. Play a 3-4-7 exacta box.
          Tioga Downs - Race #1
#4 GIBBS Backed off duel, desperately held second, could hold tactical edge.
#2 RUNHAPPY TEN Solid 41/7-8-9 record, won going away two back, good fit in here.
#1 KOTARE YAEL N Pulled pocket midway on final turn en route to repeat victory.
Race Summary Gibbs got caught 3-wide off the gate, took back to follow pocket sitter Kotare N and settled for second at notch below. Thinking he could be the target if Hennessey sends again. Play 4-1 and 4-2 exactas.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #6
#7 STRAVINSKY Visually impressive in both wins to start career, can’t go beyond.
#9 ALEXA BLUE CHIP Filly earned her top speed figure while no threat in her latest start.
#10 – SAVINI Finished in the money the last four times he stayed flat.
Race Summary Stravinsky has been most impressive in two starts for sizzling hot trainer-driver tandem. He benefitted when his nearest pursuer drifted wide in the stretch, but he won with something left. Play 7-9 and 7-10 exactas.

            #6
            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Gulfstream Park - Race #5
#6 Say Adios Has the speed to take command and the turn back from six to 5.5 furlongs make him all the more imposing vs. these.
#9 Harper Go Lucky Has a good closing move and will have to get going earlier; comes out of fast races and that could work in his favor here.
#2 Hero Tiger Makes his 1st start of the year and takes a huge class drop; was in stakes and allowance races last year and the Rivelli charge shows up for $10,000 in his 1st back.
Race Summary Say Adios is in good form, has the speed to be there from the start and hold off his rivals.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #7
#7 Remaster Was up in time for a claiming price, but it was a fast race and he's been on the board in all five starts. Dibona barn doing well (21 percent).
#1 Zaino Boyz Stakes winner has exceptional early speed and can lead the way in this one; can hold off for a major slice.
#8 Legendary Prince Was an easy winner in both turf attempts and can make a run from the start; would not be a surprise.
Race Summary Remaster closed well for the win last out and takes on tougher company in this one; hasn't run a bad one yet, and there's no reason he'll have a bad performance in this one easier.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#3 Allgorilla Was claimed off a 3rd-place finish for $12,500 by Sanchez, looks in the midst of a form reversal and is ready for the step up in class. He has worked well since the claim.
#6 Sun Squall Was on the board in all three of his turf attempts and has shown an interest in two-turn races; will be right there again.
#8 St Joe Viper Has the speed to be in the hunt from the outset and can complete well in this step up in class.
Race Summary Allgorilla woke up with a good 3rd last out and has worked well for his new barn; expect a top effort either close-up or from off the pace.

Race 2 - Maiden Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $7000 Class Rating: 49

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $4,000.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 6 GUSANO 3/1
                  # 5 BE AN INSPIRATION 5/2
                  # 9 SQUIRRELY MIKE 6/1
GUSANO looks to be the bet in here. Will probably be one of the leaders of the pack going into the halfway point of the contest. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Meraz have shown solid results as of late. BE AN INSPIRATION - Has to be carefully examined against this field displaying decent figs lately and an average speed figure of 57 under similar conditions. He has respectable class ratings, averaging 70, and has to be carefully examined in this race. SQUIRRELY MIKE - Jockey's recent return on investment numbers make this horse a very good bet.

                    Gulfstream Park - Race #4 - Post: 1:34pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $19,000 Class Rating: 61

                    Rating:

                    #3 SHEZ STUCK UP (ML=5/2)
                    #1 QUEEN LETIZIA (ML=5/1)
                    #7 STRAND DE ORO (ML=30/1)

SHEZ STUCK UP - This filly is a gem of consistency, almost always in the top three. This horse coming off a sharp performance in the last month or so is a strong challenger in my book. I think this filly is ready to run a good one. She's had enough outings since the vacation and should be fit. Using this jockey/handler combination is a good choice. QUEEN LETIZIA - Ran last out against much better company at Gulfstream Park. The move down the ladder based on class rating points should suit her well. When the real racing starts, this filly should be flying down the lane. This filly is obviously on the improve with Equibase speed figures of 4, 53, 60 last three out. STRAND DE ORO - Filly has shown some pace. This shorter distance should be better for her.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 DINNER AT FIVE (ML=2/1), #5 AUNT IRENE (ML=9/2),

DINNER AT FIVE - You should normally wager against chalks that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last three weeks. This filly is always hitting the board, but just doesn't finish first. Difficult to wager on her on the top end. AUNT IRENE - This vulnerable equine ran a common speed figure last out. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably lose in today's race running that number.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 SHEZ STUCK UP is going to be the play if we are getting 5/2 or better

Race 7 - Maiden Claiming - 5.0f on the Turf. Purse: $8500 Class Rating: 61

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 10 CHAN MAN 15/1
                      # 7 ROCKINTHERED 3/1
                      # 3 PREACHER 7/2
CHAN MAN looks solid to best this group of horses particularly if the morning line of 15/1 holds. Wagerers should feel comfortable with this selection given Nieves's recent returns at the window. Could beat this group of horses given the 53 Equibase Speed Figure garnered in his last outing. Has run soundly when travelling a turf sprint race. ROCKINTHERED - Tough to pass on this gelding with Lozada in the irons. Ran a sharp last race. PREACHER - Well above average win clip at this distance/surface. Has been running solidly lately and will almost certainly be up on the lead early on.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #5 - Post: 2:28pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $11,500 Class Rating: 66

                        Rating:

                        #5 ELLA'S ISLAND (ML=3/1)
                        #4 DONNAMEUP (ML=5/1)

ELLA'S ISLAND - This filly likes to be near the lead. Today's event is a shorter distance and should enhance her winning probability. This rider/trainer duo has been producing a very positive ROI, right at +34. Hernandez was aboard this filly last race out and was impressed enough to take the equine right back. DONNAMEUP - Had a solid closing move last race out, running the last quarter in less than 25 seconds. A similar race today, and it's straight to the winner's circle.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #8 NOSTALGIA (ML=5/2), #9 BUSINESSINDUBAI (ML=7/2), #2 FIDDLERSHOTPLEASUR (ML=8/1),

NOSTALGIA - I don't normally play a morning-line choice that hasn't been to the track in the last 3 weeks. BUSINESSINDUBAI - This filly finished outside the top 3 on May 28th and wasn't close last race out either. This mount ran a common speed fig last time out. She shouldn't improve and will probably lose in today's race running that rating. FIDDLERSHOTPLEASUR - This sire, Drill, doesn't do well with horse's on the grass.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - ELLA'S ISLAND - In this route on turf this racer has the extreme advantage on this field. This filly has the top speed number for this distance and surface.

Tuesday Serie A Soccer Power Play

The SERIE A Power Play is on Juventus -1 at 3:45 eastern. Juventus Sits at the top of Serie A with 69 points and has scored 56 goals this season while conceding just 24 as they play superior defense. Ronaldo is Juventus’ top goal scorer with 23 goals. They cant let up as Lazio is right on their tale so we will continue to see then play hard. Genoa has allowed 6 goals in 2 games since the restart and will not pose a threat here in their current form. Genoa is in 16th place in the standings, just one point away from the relegation zone. They struggle on defense even against mid level teams. Juventus won the only meeting this year and they stand at 21-3-3 while Genoa has 6 wins and 13 losses with 7 draws. The champions have kept clean sheets in four of their last 5 league matches. Lay it with Juventus. . RV- GC Sports

With the fiscal year ending at midnight, everything must go in the Rainbow Pick 6 jackpot carryover at Gulfstream Park on a special, 9-race Tuesday card. The mandatory payout pick six has a $407,675 carryover that will be on the line in Races 4-9. First post is slated for noon ET and Race 4 has a scheduled off time in the neighborhood of 1:34 pm ET.

Let’s take a look at the Rainbow Pick 6 races with a handicapper’s eye and the help of the 1/ST BET app’s artificial intelligence selections.

                              Race 4
Jeremy’s tip: Since the end of the Championship Meet in April, only 1 of 22 maiden claiming turf sprints has been won by a horse over 9-1, and 18 of the 22 winners were 5-1 or less. Keep it close to the vest.

                              Race 5
Jeremy’s tip: Since the start of April, favorites are only 2-for-13 in Gulfstream dirt dashes at 5-1/2 furlongs, and more than half of the winners were not among the top-3 post-time wagering choices. Feel free to spread your tickets a bit in a race where no less than 3 massive class droppers clash.

                              Race 6
Jeremy’s tip: Favorites are a rock-solid 42% winners in 6-furlong claimers at Gulfstream since April 1, and nearly 80% of the winners have been top-3 post-time wagering choices. This could be a leg in which to narrow.

                              Race 7
Jeremy’s tip: Turf sprints for claiming/allowance horses since April 1 at Gulfstream have provided rather mixed results. Favorites have won a plain-Jane 35% overall, but that increases to 40% in fields of 8 or fewer like this. Still, 28% of winners were not among the top-3 post-time choices even in those smaller fields. Don’t be shy about shopping.

                              Race 8
Jeremy’s tip: Favorites are only 4-for-21 in 7-furlong dirt sprints at Gulfstream since April 1. But the average winning odds has been 4-1 and only 1 winner has been more than 8-1. A little coverage in this may not hurt, while settling for 8-5 morning line favorite Panarea does not appear to be a requirement.

                              Race 9
Jeremy’s tip: The top-2 post-time wagering choices have accounted for 58% of the Gulfstream turf sprint claiming races since the start of April. Notably here are the same timespan’s leading turf sprint jockey, Emisael Jaramillo (21%), and red-hot turf sprint trainer, Carlos David (6-for-7 in exacta), showing up with the top-2 morning line choices -- #12 Cookie Cove and #2 I’m Prayingforthat.
