Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Late Pick 4 Analysis

The 0.50 Late Pick 4 at the Big M starts in Race 10. The sequence will have a $40,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Last night in East Rutherford the driver with the hottest hands was Dave Miller with 4 wins. All 13 races were won by different trainers.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 10

2-US Captain (3/1)-Dunn sticks and last start was good but the pace was quick and couldn't close the deal. Comes back a week later instead of missing a start and could be sitting on a big try.
5-De Los Cielos Deo (7/2)-Comes off a break at PcD and this guy often disappoints. That said, has faced tough company and banked >$248K last year. Using because this is a comfortable spot and can down this crew with a top effort.
6-Closing Statement (10-1)-Has chased tough winners in last two starts. Fits well with this group and had a sharp effort last week. Big shot at a nice price if Sears can work a smooth trip.

Race 11

1-Heavenly Sound (3-1)-Took the long way around from the 8-hole and came 2nd on 7/11 versus better. Has only won 3 of 38 here but should be put in play and stay in the hunt to the wire.
5-Unloaded N (7/2)-Has made a couple of U.S. starts and has shown enough to be a player versus this crew. Berry has choices from this post and could end up in the pocket behind #1

Race 12

3-Ideal Son (10-1)-Will toss last from the 10-hole after being off for 20 days. Gets needed post relief and could get sucked around and use one big brush to sweep by at nice odds.
4-Davids Coming Home (7/2)-Raced well off the restart but last was dull. Will excuse recent effort on a good track, is 0-6 when racing on an off-track. Gingras can be aggressive to get the top and not look back.
5-Let's Foal Around (9/2)-Raced the 2nd half in 55.3 but couldn't make up much ground. This looks like a better spot for Zeron to find a live cover flow and roll by at a square price.
9-Dashboard (3-1)-Post is an issue and being over bet might be a bigger concern after drawing off in last start versus similar. Best to respect but others present better value.

Race 13

1-Sutton Seelster (5-1)-Dube gunned for the lead from the 8-hole on a sloppy track and rolled home by over 3 lengths at this same class. Hasn't raced since 7/10 like 3 others in this field, should be a major player if dialed on high.
9-Dramatic Point (2-1)-Only 1 for the last 17 and 1-19 at the Big M but that win came last week from the 9-hole at this level. Will add points for a recent win and could grind around again for another picture if upswing continues.

Saratoga - Race #1

#3 Elegant Zip	Tactical miss was a good 2nd going longer off the break last time, has some speed in a race where it's lacking, and should be a juicy price as well; upset special.
#1 Speightstown Gal	Lightly raced runner came off the break for a solid win in fast time and now rises in class, but she has a ton of upside in a race there for the taking; the gal to beat.
#5 The Important One	Fellow N1X winner is a lot like the 1, in that she too just won and is moving forward, though her come from the clouds style puts her up against it; runs out of room.
Race Summary	The price will be right and then some on the 3, and while she's not as good as the ones to beat on paper, her running style might help bridge the gap a bit, so give her a look in all the slots, and especially to kick off the early Pk5 as well, since she has a chance here, and a win would blow things up right off the bat.

Saratoga - Race #4

#4 Gone Glimmering	CD invder was a solid 2nd last time, looks like the controlling speed in a paceless race, and may not even be favored; lots to like from the pick.
#7 Spanish Point	Heavy hitter has some speed, so she should be close to the 4 early, though the steep drop after being vanned off last time is a worry; second-best.
#3 Lady C	The pick's stablemate was a slow 3rd last time but her runs before fit on figures, though losing at Tdn at odds-on isn't a great sign; mixed signals.
Race Summary	That 7-2 ML seems very fair on the 4, especially since she lures Jose Ortiz and seemingly a race flow edge too, on a track where it's been tough to pass, so play her aggressively to win and place, while getting some added value by keying her in the early Pk5/Pk4 as well, since she looks primed in a race where the public might be spreading.

Saratoga - Race #8

#8 Locally Owned	CD N1X winner rises in class and doesn't break from an ideal post, but that's offset by his strong win at the trip last time, and his price, which will be an overlaid one; call right back.
#6 Prioritize	Tricky read was a very fast 2nd last time for Bond, who is always dangerous here, but it was at one-turn an he could regress, as it was by far his best of late; trying to beat on top.
#1a Money Moves	Undefeated 3yo has some hurdles, as he tries older, hasn't run since March, and tries two turns as well, and will be part of a favored entry, so he's got his work cut out; tabbing today.
Race Summary	The price will be right on the 8, and that negates some of the worries about the rise in class and especially the post, so give him a look in all the slots, and especially the late Pk5/Pk4 as well, since he's on the improve, likes the trip, and won't have to improve much off that win last time to double up.

Laurel Park - Race #3

#4 Surprise Twist	Would be attractive enough if offering something like the 5/2 ML price as the second choice in here, as he's making his second start off the bench and has been in with some really good groups over the past year.
#2 Outofthepark	To heavy race between this one and the top choice, and while this guy is in good form and loves the local footing, his ceiling may not be quite as high as the top choice.
#5 Gunnison	He has been in with some tough groups at Gulfstream over the past several months, but he'd probably need at least one misfire from the top pair if he's going to land this one.
Race Summary	Surprise Twist and Outofthepark are tough in this spot, but the former has been facing better company and has some upside in this second start off the bench.

Laurel Park - Race #6

#7 To the Front	Has yet to face this kind of group, and he has some forward ability that should keep him in the mix from the start.
#8 Tappin Honor	Another dropper with some early hoof, but he's probably going to get a bit overbet in this spot. Could be vulnerable late.
#6 Allthewrongreasons	Has some ability from off the pace, and that may serve him well in a spot where there are a handful of horses who figure to be moving the wrong way late.
Race Summary	To the Front has a mild rating gear that may serve him well in this spot, and he has never faced a $5,000 group like this.

Laurel Park - Race #8

#7 Threes Over Deuces	Ultra reliable type tends to run the same race over and over, and that consistency might be enough to get him home with this group from close range.
#2 Laki	A repeat of that last one would surely do the trick here, but that was a huge effort off the layoff, and I'm not sold that he'll run right back to it in three weeks.
#4 Cordmaker	Finisher will sit near the tail and hope for the pace to come back to him, and he has done all of his best work over the local footing.
Race Summary	Threes Over Deuces is a consistent type with some tactical pace to sit close early, and he should have every chance inside the final sixteenth. 4/1 ML price is fair.

Race Summary	Taking a longshot stab on Goodnight Irene, who just missed last week and gets plenty of pace to rally into tonight. The 4-year-old mare could make a run at $100k in earnings. Play a 3-ALL exacta.

#3 WINDSUN RICKY	Didn’t lose ground in fast heat, worth a price shot.
#5 REVOLVER N	Disappointed in local debut but can’t be discounted off prior Meadowlands efforts.

Race Summary	Windsun Ricky paced evenly through a :54.1 back half in a race won by the 2-to-5 favorite. He could factor at a generous price with tonight’s favorite starting from post 10.

#9 DRAMATIC POINT	Been there, done that last week from post 9, taken to repeat.
#5 MAKE IT BIG	Beat 2 lengths in 1:52.4, can snap in-the-money drought.
#7 LYON’S IMAGE	Speed mission from post 10 came up short as the favorite.
Race Summary	Dramatic Point sustained a first-over rally from the same starting spot last week and won going away. No reason to think he can’t do it again under same conditions. Play 9-1, 9-5 and 9-7 exactas.

Gulfstream Park - Race #4

#2 Turn On the Magic	Has trained very well leading up to his first since last September; logged a bullet work last week and has a steady list of drills. Likely to press throughout.
#3 Tons of Gold	Was on the board in his last three and has turned into a decent claimer; capable of a big effort in this upward step in class.
#1 Rebelde	Ran well in races that came off the turf in his last two; likes the one-turn mile and factors into this one.
Race Summary	Tired in stakes races last year and and comes back in a spot that isn't as good as what he's seen. Gets hot-riding Vazquez and can be troublesome to any others with designs on setting the pace.

Gulfstream Park - Race #10

#1 Sailing Solo	Loves it on the front end and can take immediate command from the rail; beat a good group last time and will be the one to catch under Hall of Famer Prado.
#5 Galleon Mast	Held second in a stakes race last time and has been in a regular in some strong races; will be rolling late.
#11 Battle of Blenheim	Won three of his last four and was claimed by the Braddy barn last out; challenged class-wise but his good form cannot be denied.
Race Summary	Sailing Solo will have no option but to go for the lead from the inside and is generally tough when he gets the lead; if others are bent on getting to the front he can probably be positioned from just off.

Gulfstream Park - Race #11

#2 Buxom Beast	Moves over to the turf for a two-turn test; faded vs. much better and can be close from the start.
#10 Sunday Scheming	Was third on the turf in his second start and has been running with a higher level; in the mix here.
#11 All American Jewel	Consistent closer and will get a good enough pace for him; can be rolling in the final furlong.
Race Summary	Buxom Beast hasn't done a lot yet but is well connected and takes a class drop; capable of a big effort in his first on grass.

Whenever you see the Yankees it's easy to expect fireworks from their offense but they'll struggle in this one against one of the best pitchers in baseball. I look for Strasburg to continue where he left off from his dominating 2019 postseason as he knows he has to be great in every start in this shortened season and doesn't want the team to start 0-2. I'm expecting a quality start over 6 innings in his first ever start against the Yanks.
On the other side the Yankees are looking for a big couple months from Paxton. His job will be a lot easier against this shell of a Nationals lineup. Their number 3 hitter from last years World Series victory, Anthony Rendon plays in Anaheim, their cleanup hitter Juan Soto tested positive for Covid, and their captain Ryan Zimmerman has opted out of playing because of the virus. The Nationals will have to win low scoring games for awhile.
I'm betting the UNDER in this one. The Pick: TAKE THE UNDER

MLB Opening weekend and on Saturday night at 9:10ET we get the Diamondbacks squaring off against the Padres in NL West action.
On the mounds we get Robby Ray for the D-Backs squaring off against Dinelson Lamet for the Padres.
For the DBacks Ray was outstanding in Spring Training and carried that over into Camp. A free agent at the end of the season, Ray dropped weight this offseason due to a change in diet and new workout routine. He hopes an adjustment to his pitching mechanics will pay dividends in 2020's shortened season.
Ray’s issue for the past few seasons is that he runs his pitch count too high by issuing too many walks, I'm banking on that changing. In 2019 Ray made 33 starts, with a 12-8 record a 4.34 ERA, a 1.342 WHIP, 84 walks and 235 strikeouts over the course of 174.1 innings of work.
For the Padres we get we get Dinelson Lamet, a popular pick for a breakout 2020 season, and there's plenty of evidence to support that. He was dominant in Spring Training and Summer Camp and has harnessed a nice slider and curveball.
Some trends to consider. Diamondbacks are 5-0 in their last 5 overall, 5-0 in their last 5 Saturday games, 5-0 in their last 5 games on grass, and 4-0 in their last 4 games vs. a right-handed starter. Padres are 7-19 in their last 26 vs. National League West, and 6-20 in their last 26 overall.
Arizona had 4 hits and 0 ER in 6.0 IP vs. Chris Paddack on Friday, and I'm looking for that to change on Saturday. Look for this game to go Arizona's way on Saturday night in what should be a low scoring affair.
