Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Late Pick 4 Analysis

    August 23, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
Hawthorne Racecourse has a 16-race card set for this evening. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 13. The sequence will have a $25,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus.

The driver with the hottest hands on Saturday was Casey Leonard with three wins. The top conditioner on the card was Mike Brink with 4 winners.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 13

1-Premier Desirey (4-1)-This barn has been going well and can send them out ready to fire hot off the bench.
4-Brownielicious (9/2)-Tough race to figure, Leonard steers and will use. May have found a field to beat and break maiden.
6-Sherri's Babe (7/2)-Not sure how much is the horse and how much has to do with the driver but this filly never seems to do it the easy way. Seems to have enough speed but pilot needs to use it at the right time.

    Race 14

2-Lacarmeliliana (30-1)-Was racing well in 2 starts before a sick scratch on 8/15 and should be a large price. Fits if ready and could be forwardly placed from this spot.
4-Bad Medicine (4-1)-Ran off versus $6k claimers and now steps up and loses Wilfong to #10. Should fit with this group and Petrelli barn has been going well.
5-Unbroken Circle (4-1)-8-year-old mare has held her own versus 10k claimers having outside post draws. Has won 6 of 23 at Haw and should be in the hunt tonight.
10-Barley Nation (3-1)-Had an even effort at the Red Mile versus $12,500 claimers and now drops to level of previous 2nd place finish before shipping to Lexington. Post is an issue as may have to work hard to get on the engine and could be over bet.

    Race 15

4-Double A Cash Hall (6-1)-Won last by 5 lengths and steps up like most in this field. Looks like a threat for top honors if within striking range at the top of the lane.
5-Pine Dream (2-1)-Drops out of Opens where there were mixed results. Should like the company and has had success here winning in 8 of 23 starts, but will need a good steer.

    Race 16

4-Cassie Marie's T T (3-1)-Has finished 2nd in all 3 local starts and in last 2 has been the odds on favorite. First 2 tries were on an off track and last effort was a good one from the 8-hole. Looks like a player versus this crew.
6-Metaxas (10-1)-Will swing for a price and this filly has had an excuse in last 3 starts. Likes to come off of cover and Franco can make noise late if the trip is smooth.
8-Flirtnwithtrouble (5-1)-Warren's choice over #7 was off almost a month before racing on 8/16. Last line was better than it looked and did pace the last half in .55. This will be the 3rd start on Lasix and should be in the mix at a fair price.

    .50 Late Pick 4

    1,4,6/2,4,5,10/4,5/4,6,8
    Total Bet=$36

Jerry Shottenkirk: My Late Pick 4 Ticket Sunday at Saratoga

      August 23, 2020 | By Jerry Shottenkirk
You’d have to go to Breeders’ Cup Day to see a more compelling race than Saratoga’s Grade 1 Diana Stakes on Sunday. In fact, this is a good fillies and mares turf preview.

The 1 1-8th-mile turf race for fillies and mares has only six entrants, but the quality is off the charts. The Chad Brown-trained royalty of Rushing Fall and Sistercharlie will show up, but they will certainly have to work for it. in addition to having to outrun a stablemate, they’ll have to face the likes of the Kevin Attard-trained rags-to-riches success Starship Jubilee, the Graham Motion-trained pairing of Secret Message and up-and-comer Mean Mary, and the Christophe Clement-trained Call Me Love, who lost a photo to Starship Jubilee in her latest attempt.

The Diana is the third leg of an interesting Late Pick 4, and while the headliner has a short field, it’ll take a few numbers on the ticket to get that one. This week’s suggested play has four runners from the Diana: Rushing Fall, Starship Jubilee, Sistercharlie and Mean Mary and the cost is $54 with a 3x3x4x3 approach.

Here’s a look at the Late Pick 4 races:

      Race 6 (4:09 p.m. ET, maiden claiming)
TOWERING GAZE showed a good closing move in two of three and is usable because of the interest in the stretch. There could be a speed collapse and he could benefit.
HIGH SCHOOL CRUSH has had nine changes but comes in off her best performance. He closed well and lost by a head. Don’t think this one is a career maiden; she’s been in some fast races and her day will come. Maybe today’s the day.
SILENT EMPRESS has just one start and while she didn’t make an impact, she actually was a length closer at the end than she was at first call. This is not a great spot, so significant improvement is likely.

Race 7 (4:43 p.m. ET, allowance optional claiming)
LONE ROCK was rolling at the end of her last one and just missed against PETE’S PLAY CALL. LONE ROCK’s performance was a big wakeup call and she was claimed by Robertino Diodoro. Continued improvement is very possible with this barn.
PETE’S PLAY CALL’s performance in his last start was tremendous and opened up 3.5 lengths and lasted by a half-length in 1:15 2-5. His races all down the line were very quick and he was a strong player in many of them.
MOUNT TRAVERS makes his third start off an 11-month layoff and can put up a fight. He was in stakes races last year and fits here.

      Race 8 (5:18 p.m. ET, Gr. 1 Diana Stakes)
RUSHING FALL is back to a two-race winning streak after doing the unthinkable for her: Losing two consecutive races, ending 2019 on a rare note. She’s back to doing what she does best and had a repeat victory in the G1 Jenny Wiley in her latest.
STARSHIP JUBILEE has won straight and went over $1 million in earnings when she won the G2 Ballston Spa. She continues to improve and should always be taken seriously. Her beginnings were humble, but she looks as good as they come.
SISTER CHARLIE was third to STARSHIP JUBILEE in the Ballston Spa and had won six straight until losing her last two. She was 2-to-5 in the Ballston Spa and hasn’t been above even-money since her win in last year’s Diana. It’s impossible not to know her capabilities.
MEAN MARY is the new kid in town and she’s has earned this shot at the best turf distaffers. She enjoys the front end and will attempt to back up the pace. That will be a best test, especially if RUSHING FALL goes with her.

      Race 9 (5:51 p.m. ET, maiden claiming)
ALLIED INVASION was a closing third in his only start and can be expected to improve.
RINGGOOD has spent all of his time in maiden special weights races and takes his first drop to maiden claiming. He was close-up in his last one and will probably last much longer in this spot. Legit threat.
NERO’S FIDDLE was fourth in both of his races and with a rider change to Luis Saez can be closer to the action early, and that makes her a contender.

      Saratoga Late Pick 4:
      6) #1 Towering Gaze, #2 High School Crush, #5 Silent Empress.
      7) #2 Lone Rock, #6 Pete’s Play Call, #7 Mount Travers.
      8) #3 Rushing Fall, #4 Starship Jubilee, #5 Sister Charlie, #6 Mean Mary.
      9) #2 Ringgood, #3 Allied Invasion, #5 Nero’s Fiddle.
      50-cent Late Pick 4: 1-2-5 with 2-6-7 with 3-4-5-6 with 2-3-5 ($54).

        Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

        Saratoga - Race #1
#5 Uptown Flirt Mott miss was a good 3rd on debut, which gives her an important edge here, as several here have not started; look out.
#6 Black Sand Expected chalk will be bet hard for Brown, and she's by all-world sire Dubawi, but the works here are light; trying to beat.
#3 Brynbella Pletcher miss is by Flintshire, so she figures to have some talent, though this is only a 13% first-turf barn; tabbing today.
Race Summary The experience edge the 5 has is a big one, as both the 6 and 3 are just getting acclimated to this game, so play her to win and place, and especially to kick off the early Pk5 as well, since she tipped her hand in her debut, and should only be that much tighter today.
        Saratoga - Race #5
#5 Six Percent Jerkens runner moved forward in his last, now makes the often pivotal third start of his form cycle, and could offer a hint of value as well; look out.
#1 Quiet Out East Turf-to-dirt runner goes for a Bruce Brown barn having a strong meet, drops in class, and drew perfectly to save all the ground inside; huge chance.
#7 Cold Hard Cash Rice runner got the job done in the MCL ranks off the break on Opening Day, so he figures, but the stretchout and bad post aren't ideal; mixed signals.
Race Summary You should get fair value on the 5, and quite possibly a bit better than that 3-1 ML, which would make him playable in the win and place pools, though you can get some added value by keying him to end the early Pk5/Pk4, in the mandatory payout Empire 6, and to kick off the late Pk5 as well, since this is a wide open race, and he looks poised for a big run now that he's shakes the rust off in his last two.
        Saratoga - Race #8
#1 Call Me Love Clement miss stepped up and was a big 2nd in the local GII last time, drew perfectly, is reportedly training lights out, and will be a price too; can surprise.
#4 Starship Jubilee Rock solid mare beat the pick last time, is 4-for-6 at the dsitance, and should trip out perfectly just off the speed, at a square price too; could double up.
#5 Sistercharlie Two-time defending champ was short when 3rd to the top pair last time, so she'll move forward, though at 6 she could be a bit over the top; mixed signals.
Race Summary There's a lot to like about the 1, most notably her price, post, and current form, so play her in all the slots, and especially in the mandatory payout Empire 6, late Pk5/Pk4 as well, since she may fall through the wagering cracks, which means a win would add plenty of value to all three sequences, especially since it would be over a pair of Brown runners who will be bet hard (including the #3 Rushing Fall).

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Mountaineer - Race #1
#3 Mistie Royale Proved last out that she's still got something in those 11yo legs, and with any step forward in this second start off the break, she's right there.
#7 Secret or Not Should appreciate the move back to the grass after that dull run last out, as she was an easy winner with similar two starts back and can work out a great trip.
#2 Seeing'n'believing Tactical type is a decent fit here, but she hasn't won in quite some time and seems best used underneath tonight.
Race Summary Mistie Royale is still knocking at age 11, and she's got some ability to sit in a good midpack spot. The class drop may be enough to get her home.
          Mountaineer - Race #4
#6 Out Ona Limb Should offer a fair price for a cold barn, and it's encouraging that she has been slowly heading in the right direction. Why not in a soft race?
#7 Ultra Diva Gets Lasix for this second trip to post after showing little in the debut after a bad break, but off that effort at nearly 6-1, I wouldn't be champing at the bit to take 5-2 on this guy today in hopes that Lasix fixes everything.
#2 S S Alternate Another adding Lasix for the first time, but this one brings some decent form into this and looks like the type who might be able to move up enough to score here.
Race Summary Class hiker Out Ona Limb was slowly moving the right way earlier this year and is worth a look against the local company in a spot where the two ML chalks don't inspire a ton of fear.
          Mountaineer - Race #7
#7 Miz Machen Has a little bit of versatility and can get a really nice trip near the top here. She's facing a handful of class-rising types who may not offer fair value.
#3 Shezagoldgetter Has always been fairly reliable, but she has really putting things together in recent starts and proved she could hang with winners right back off the maiden win.
#4 Power Forward Owns some running lines that would surely win this, but it's tough to get that excited thinking about taking a 5-2 morning line offering on this one off a couple of no-show efforts.
Race Summary Miz Machen should be in the mix from the start, and she stepped up nicely to factor with similar last time out. Thinking the 5/1 ML price is fair.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#3 Thunder Ride Gave way late in the Mecke Stakes and returns to a better level for him, one in which he lost his last try for the price by a head. Solid chance on the front end.
#4 Louder Than Bombs Was third in the G3 Canadian Turf two back and then ran up the track in the G3 Appleton. Classiest of this group but, needs to get back to good form and may have found his spot here.
#6 Noble Indy Set the pace and tired last time in a race at Saratoga; he didn't pan out in New York but won his last Gulfstream appearance in March.
Race Summary Thunder Ride has a good chance to get on the front end and has a chance to repel his rivals and hold on. Tried tougher last time and fits here.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #10
#5 Charge Account Gets a good pace set up and will come rolling if he runs back to her last one; Panici is a good fit aboard.
#1 Panarea Took a clear lead in the stretch and was caught last; has been good in five of his last six.
#3 Moon Pistol Ran on for third last out and turns back in distance; should be able to make up some ground again.
Race Summary Charge Account will get a decent trip off the pace and likely will be moving the fastest of all at the end.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #9
#1 Battle of Blenheim Went into the big fade in the Mecke Stakes in his first off the claim for Braddy and returns to that level; had won three of four just prior to failed in that stakes encounter.
#2 Projected Was up in time last out and has taken two of his last three. Could get the perfect trip just behind the early leaders.
#8 Over the Channel Is in good form and comes off a sharp win vs. state-bred company; capable of another big effort vs. open company.
Race Summary Battle of Blenheim is back to a more familiar level and has a good chance to return to winning ways.

MLB public betting, line movement for August 23
                Patrick Everson

Manny Machado and the Padres go for a three-game sweep of the Astros on Sunday. San Diego is on a six-game winning streak, but it could be tough to get to seven against Houston's Zack Greinke.

MLB betting odds are on the board for a 14-game Sunday slate to wrap up the weekend. Interleague play highlights the day, with Zack Greinke and the Houston Astros taking on the San Diego Padres, and the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs wrapping up a three-game set.

Caesars sportsbooks provided insights on MLB opening lines and early line movement, sharp money and public betting for Sunday’s games.

                MLB line movement

The Padres put the brakes on the Astros’ nine-game winning streak, as San Diego won the first two games of this three-game set, including a 13-2 wipeout Saturday. The Padres are on a 6-0 spree, but will face a tough chore to make it seven against Greinke. Although the right-hander is only 1-0 through five starts, Greinke has a sterling 1.84 ERA heading into this 4:10 p.m. ET contest.

Most sportsbooks didn’t post a line Saturday night for Astros-Padres, awaiting word on who would start for San Diego.

The White Sox beat the host Cubs on Friday and Saturday, compiling 17 total runs in the process, and go for the sweep at Wrigley Field on Sunday. Despite the White Sox riding a seven-game win streak, Caesars sportsbooks pegged Yu Darvish and the Cubs a -181 favorite and ticked to -179 late Saturday night, with the White Sox at +164. First pitch is at 2:20 p.m. ET.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves play the 7:08 p.m. ET nightcap, with the host Braves going for a three-game sweep. Atlanta opened -123 favorite at Caesars and went to -121 late Saturday, with Philadelphia +111.

                MLB public betting

The Consensus is a good gauge of where public betting is, and for Saturday’s games, it’s with the Dodgers. Los Angeles was landing 74 percent of early picks against the Rockies. Meanwhile, the Braves were taking 60 percent of early Consensus picks against the Phillies.

Utah will take a commanding 3-1 in this series on Sunday with a victory in Game 4. The Jazz have too many weapons for the Nuggets to contain as Mike Conley has returned and the point guard led Utah in scoring in Game 3. LA Clippers vs Dallas Mavericks 8/23/20 - NBA

The LA Clippers look to take a commanding lead in their best of seven NBA Western Conference quarterfinal series on Sunday when playing the Dallas Mavericks in Game 4. The Clippers defeated the Mavericks 130-122 in Game 3 on Friday to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Kawhi Leonard was the leading scorer for the Clippers with 36 points and pulled down nine rebounds and handed out eight assists.

                              Celtics vs 76ers 8/23/20 - NBA

The Boston Celtics will go for the sweep when they take on the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday afternoon from the Walt Disney World Resort. The third-seeded Celtics have done it with defense, holding the 76ers to an average of 98.7 points through the first three games of this series. On Friday, Boston used a game-ending 10-0 run to score a 102-94 victory.

Boston G Kemba Walker tallied a game-high 24 points on 10-for-20 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds. Jaylen Brown contributed 21 points and seven rebounds for the Celtics.

The Philadelphia 76ers are playing without All-Star G Ben Simmons (knee) and are looking at an offseason that should bring changes. In Game Three, Philadelphia missed 30 of their 39 three-point attempts and shot a woeful 30 percent from the field overall. The 76ers won the battle on the boards by a 57-45 margin and turned the ball over 12 times in defeat.

All-Star C Joel Embiid led all scorers with 30 points and converted 14 of his 16 free-throw attempts. Tobias Harris added 15 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort for the 76ers.
