CAPITAL REEF looks to be a very good contender particularly if the morning line of 10/1 holds. Has been running solidly and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. Recently Wales has been hot which may give the edge to this gelding. Will more than likely be one of the front-runners of the pack going into the halfway point of the contest.

ALPHASTEST - The fact that this gelding is entered right back into a race so quickly means he's fit and ready. Lone speed horses can be tough to run down. Here's a lone front-runner facing sluggish sorts today. Vigil was aboard this gelding in the last race and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. Last time this gelding ran today's distance he got a speed fig that would probably win today's contest. I think this gelding is ready to run a good one. He's had enough efforts since the layoff and should be fit. Took a big class drop last out, and I think he may have needed it. Comi enters him at a similar class today. I'd expect an improved performance. I like that latest contest on August 16th at Mountaineer Park where he ended up second. GRAN GREYFROST - It looks like Ortiz had to come to know this colt on Jun 16th when riding him for the first time. Back aloft again today. The June 16th race at Mountaineer Park was at a class level of (87). Dropping down in class drastically, so he should be in a good position to win. He has the topmost earnings per start (EPS). Check out this thoroughbred. IM A PATRIOT - Looking at today's class rating, this thoroughbred is meeting an easier field than in the last race at Mountaineer Park. This jock and trainer have a fantastic winning pct when they combine forces. This thoroughbred has a lot of class. A good sign in a turf race like we have today. OCEANOGRAPHER - The jock/handler duet of Rodriguez and Morris has a strong return on investment together. This fine animal is racing on the turf for the first time. He should be tough, coming off a second place finish in his race on January 16th on a sluggish track. You have to really like that most recent race speed figure, 79, which is the highest last race speed fig of this field.

AUTOGRAPH - Should have at least finished in the money in the last two months in a short distance event to be any kind of value at modest odds in a sprint.

I've got to go with COMFORTABLE CAT particularly if the morning line of 10/1 holds. Conway has her trained admirably to break promptly out of the gate. Over time, this trainer has a very good ROI at this distance/surface. Conway has one of the best winning percentages in this group of animals with entries running at this distance and surface. GRASSARLA - Has solid front-end speed and will almost certainly fare soundly against this group. This mare obviously likes the distance, going 9 - 27 in her races lately. TREATHERLIKESTAR - She has been moving solidly as of late while recording very solid speed figures. Earnings per start in dirt sprint races is reliable for this racer.

RULES - Gelding has shown some pace. This shorter distance should be better for him. He has the top earnings per start. Take a good look at this animal. WEST FORK - This jock/handler duo has been producing a high win percentage, right around 33. A repeat of that last performance on August 3rd where he registered a speed rating of 57 looks high enough to score in this contest. Bravo-Estrada will try adding the 'hood' today in hopes of an improved performance. When a thoroughbred drops at least 5 lbs (like this one is), you must take notice. It may not seem like much, but this could make a difference.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 WAR OF THE NORTH (ML=3/1), #6 ACERE (ML=7/2), #2 GAME CHANGER (ML=9/2),

WAR OF THE NORTH - Just can't invest in any vulnerable equine right back after he doesn't hit the board after any extended rest time. No picnic to wager on any racer in a sprint race if he hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last two months. ACERE - Tough to wager on any horse in a sprint event at 7/2 when he hasn't shown any successful efforts in sprints in the last couple of months. When checking today's class rating, he will have to garner a much better speed figure than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt sprint. GAME CHANGER - This racer hasn't won at this venue.

Reason: The KC Royals are in dead last in the AL Central division. They have lost two straight games and six of their last 10. The good news is that they start one of their bright spots so far this season in Brad Keller. Keller is 3-0 in his three starts with a 0.00 ERA and 0.905 WHIP. That's right, he has not allowed a run to go with his eight total hits over 17 2/3 innings. The Royals will be a big dog here on Monday despite Keller starting. The Cardinals are in 2nd place in the AL Central but are just one game over .500 at 9-8. Jack Flaherty will start for the Redbirds. He is 1-0 in his two starts with a 3.11 ERA.
