    Eddie Olczyk’s Saturday Spot Plays

    October 9, 2020
1/ST and NBC Sports handicapper Eddie Olczyk is back this weekend with a trio of horses he’s tabbing in New York and Kentucky. Edzo is steering clear of the major stakes at Belmont and Keeneland and focusing on blue-collar runners at attractive prices.

    BELMONT PARK

    Race 2 // 12:54PM ET // Allowance // 6 Furlongs (Turf)
#7 SUMMER AT THE SPA (5-1)

On a stakes card that has short fields and big favorites, there aren’t a lot of places to attack in New York. My best bet comes early with a filly adding blinkers and moving route-to-sprint. Even-money morning line favorite Robin Sparkles appears likely to end up in a speed duel, setting the table. Win bet.

    KEENELAND

    Race 3 // 2:12PM ET // Maiden Claiming // 6 Furlongs
    #7 MAJOR WAGER (20-1)

With wet conditions expected in Lexington this weekend, this longshot could be capable of pulling the upset over a wet track. She earned a much bigger number in the slop at Indiana Grand than she did on dirt, and trainer Anna Meah popped a 14-1 winner Wednesday at Keeneland. Win-place bet. Exacta wheel 7-ALL as well as ALL-7. Daily double 7-6 parlaying our picks.

    Race 4 // 2:45PM ET // Claiming // 7 Furlongs
    #6 HOP KAT (5-1)

His experience and win over a sloppy track in April at Gulfstream is expected to come in handy. It’s a wide-open race with a 7-2 morning line favorite who has never been on anything but fast footing. Win bet.

Race of the Week: Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont

      October 8, 2020 | By Jeremy Plonk
$250,000 GRADE 1 JOCKEY CLUB GOLD CUP AT BELMONT PARK
      Saturday, October 10, 2020

      The Lead:
Belmont Park's Super Saturday of Breeders' Cup preps includes the 2-year-olds in the Grade 1 Frizette and Champagne, turf fillies and mares in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl and the Classic division players in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. The 1-1/4 miles Gold Cup goes for its most discounted purse since Affirmed won it 1979, and that's certainly impacted its depth and quality. While it may not be a Gold Cup of Curlin and Cigar, Skip Away or John Henry, what about 2020 is? I was set to pass the race until I handicapped it; vulnerable favorites are like catnip to a horseplayer.

      Field Depth:
TACITUS and MYSTIC GUIDE are Grade 2 winners, the former against all ages, the latter against 3-year-olds only. NAME CHANGER has won at the Grade 3 level. HAPPY SAVER is a listed stakes winner making his graded debut. PRIORITIZE is Grade 1-placed in search of his first stakes win.

      Pace:
With no confirmed front-runners in the field of 5, jockey intent will be key. Given the elbow start midway on the clubhouse turn for 1-1/4 miles races at Belmont, expect Irad Ortiz Jr. on HAPPY SAVER to be aggressive from the gate and utilize the rail advantage this trip creates. TACITUS or NAME CHANGER figure to pursue closest. This race can and should be won on or near the lead.

      Our Eyes:
TACITUS has the resume, winning races in the Big Apple like the 2019 Grade 2 Wood Memorial and July's Grade 2 Suburban. But he's been a relative moneypit. He's won just 1 of his last 9, and is 1-for-5 as the favorite in that span. I didn't see any way he'd lose the Grade 2 Suburban against a substandard field and he delivered his best performance in some time. But then he was back to his old self in the Grade 1 Woodward when decent, but not great, Global Campaign led him on a merry-go-'round. He's 1-for-4 at Belmont, 1-for-4 this year and 1-for-5 at 1-1/4 miles. All of that equals the Suburban. At what figures to be a short price, I'll bet he doesn't have an encore.

Three-year-olds MYSTIC GUIDE and HAPPY SAVER are the alternatives. They get in at 122 pounds (4 less than the elders). And I'm clearly in the camp of one over the other.

MYSTIC GUIDE and his regal pedigree finally delivered in the Jim Dandy when he bested a modest field that included eventual Preakness longshots Liveyourbeastlife and Jesus' Team. While the latter did come back to run third at Pimlico, he was beaten double-digits by the winner and didn't give the Jim Dandy any rousing endorsement. John Velazquez winds up on MYSTIC GUIDE after Jose Ortiz opted to stick with TACITUS. Curiously, it was Velazquez who actually got the most out of TACITUS when he piloted him in the Suburban. MYSTIC GUIDE will have to be kept closer to the pace than he's used to and may be taken out of his best kick. Dam Music Note was stellar here at Belmont.

But I strongly prefer unbeaten HAPPY SAVER. Visually he's looked like a future star in each of his first 3 starts. He traveled to Laurel for a Preakness 'Win & You're In' victory in the Federico Tesio, but I never felt confident he'd wind up in the final jewel of the Triple Crown. Trainer Todd Pletcher loathes to run horses in the Preakness for whatever reason; but you can look at his rampant record in the Derby and Belmont and make that deduction without hesitation. Pletcher saw a short-field JC Gold Cup forming and found a very easy Grade 1 spot, much easier than facing Authentic, Art Collector and eventual winner Swiss Skydiver at Old Hilltop. The 1-1/4 miles should not be a problem with a ground-saving trip, favorable track configuration and fact that his papa Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby over the distance. HAPPY SAVER has BRIS late pace figures of 95, 94 and 99 in his 3 starts, which should be plenty competitive with these late if he's handed the early lead as expected.

Most Certain Exotics Contender: TACITUS hasn't missed a superfecta sans a trip to Saudi Arabia.

Best Longshot Exotics Contender: In a 5-horse field, this isn't really relevant. You're not playing tris and supers when the payout math works this poorly in your favor.

Sending it in ($100 bankroll): $80 win HAPPY SAVER looking for 2-1 odds or more. $20 daily double SUPER SAVER to TAMAHERE in the Race 10 Sands Point. If the price on HAPPY SAVER dips below 2-1, the full amount goes to the daily double.

            Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

            Belmont Park - Race #5
#5 Dayoutoftheoffice The forgotten horse hasn't ben out since a 6-length romp in the Spa G3 in July, but that effort puts her squarely in the mix here, and with some added maturity she's going to be that much tougher, from a perfect attack post too; look out.
#1 Vequist Major player freaked when she broke her maiden in the Spa G1 by 9 1/2 lengths, so she's going to be a real handful here, though this rail draw could prove to be a little troublesome, with plenty of speed to her outside; still, looms very scary.
#2 Cantata ML favorite ran off the screen and to her backing in her Spa debut 10 1/4-length romp, but the top-2 won't be impressed with that, so sure, she gal could be any kind, but the waters are a lot deeper today; willing to make her prove it on top.
Race Summary That 3-1 ML seems like a lot of value on the 5, as she drew better than her two main rivals, and she should trip out beautifully as well, so play her aggressively to win and place, while getting some added value by keying her to end the early Pk5/Pk4 as well, since a win will knock out a lot of tickets that and keying on the 1 and 2.
            Belmont Park - Race #8
#6 Nay Lady Nay Class rise has won two straight stakes and will now get the acid test, though this isn't the toughest G1 you'll ever see, and she could offer a hint of value as well; hat trick time.
#1 Cambier Parc Two-time G1 winner obviously needed her comeback at WO when a distant 2nd in the G2, though while she should improve, her figures are still a bit on the light side; second-best.
#3 Civil Union Shug miss is streaking off three straight, and she stepped up in the G2 last time as well, though the cutback to 1 1/4 miles could prove to be a bit sharp for her; mixed signals here.
Race Summary You should get fair value on the 6, as there are plenty here who will take some play, but she's still got upside off just eight starts, has some big figures too, and will be closing late, so play her in all the slots, and especially in the mandatory payoff Empire 6, late Pk5, and to kick off the late Pk4 as well, since a win would add some value to all three sequences.
            Belmont Park - Race #10
#5 Mystic Guide Regally bred 3yo added blinkers and got over the hump last time, and while this is a ig step up, this isn't your dad's JCGC either; expecting a huge run.
#4 Tacitus The chalk is a G2 track/distance winner, so he'll hit hard, but he's a big underlay too, with very little margin for error, or upside; trying to beat at false odds.
#1 Happy Saver Major underlay is 2-1 on the ML but has never won a graded stakes, so this is a huge step up for a 3yo who has no edge on paper either; just not seeing it.
Race Summary You won't get that 4-1 ML on the pick, but even 3-1 or so seems fair, as his race with blinkers was a solid move forward, this trip will be to his liking, and he's got every reason to move forward again, so play him aggressively to win and place, and especially in the mandatory payoff Empire 6, late Pk5/Pk4 as well, since budget players will be singling the 4, even though he's not nearly as imposing as the toteboard will suggest.

              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

              Laurel Park - Race #2
#4 Magic Mule Stepped up nicely off the debut run with claiming company, and he may still have some room to move forward with just the two starts under his belt.
#1 Joycee Has Pizzaz Looks like the one to beat off the good runner-up finish in his local debut, and he'll return as a gelding for this third start. Capable but overbet?
#5 One Niner Tango Showed a bit better pace out of the blocks last out and stayed on better than he had in the past. His form doesn't seem too far off the top pair at a better price.
Race Summary Magic Mule should offer a better price than the rail-drawn chalk, and they both have seemingly equivalent upside in this spot. 'Mule may have a slight tactical edge by drawing further outside.
              Laurel Park - Race #8
#6 Kisses For Heidi Woke up on the drop last time out at Churchill, and she'll get a positive step up in claiming price for the new connections. Tactical type can get the job done.
#2 Paynterbythenumbers Drops in for the first time and has a right to be tough with these. She'll almost surely get overbet with these and doesn't have to win this.
#1 Bourbon Wildcat Sort of a one-paced debut effort at 24-1 in the Delaware debut, and she brings some upside with her to this second lifetime start. Interesting at a price.
Race Summary Kisses For Heidi looks like the right one in this spot as she steps up a bit for the new team, and she is likely in line for a really good trip from close range.
              Laurel Park - Race #9
#5 Beacon of Truth Has the right kind of tactical pace to sit close to what might be a fairly modest pace here. She ran well in her two-turn debut against a short field at Presque Isle and is worth another look on the lawn.
#1 Lookin Dynamic Finisher might get a somewhat negative race shape, but her recent running lines make her tough with these. That said, I wouldn't be too excited about taking the 5/2 ML offering.
#7 Good Life Cider Not out of the question while adding Lasix for the first time, but she seems more likely to land an underneath piece of this.
Race Summary Beacon of Truth should be able to sit close here and use her tactical edge to get the jump on the deeper finishing threats.

                Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                Hoosier Park - Race #1
#2 DAKOTA ROADSTER Two wins and a troubled trip recently at notch below, enters new barn.
#1 SKYWAY FIREBALL Hit board in 4 of last 5 at this level, three against same winner.
#6 SUPER PAC HANVOER Runs late, finished out of money in last three from post 6 outward.
Race Summary Dakota Roadster, a heavily-raced 8-year-old, steps up off the claim, but he could be a forward factor at a big price in a wide-open race. Play a 1-2-6 exacta box.
                Meadowlands - Race #1
#7 IMAGEOFAROCKER Disappointed in latest, can’t be discounted at better price for new barn.
#2 PAPIAMENTO Seized the moment in same race and ran away from the field.
#1 BANK SEA Plagued by bad posts, finally gets relief, hit board in 8 of 19 this year.
Race Summary Imageofarocker back-pedaled as the favorite from post 8, but he fits the condition well and could re-awaken with off-the-pace tactics that produced good results in September. Play 7-1 and 7-2 exactas.
                Yonkers - Race #9
#4 PAT STANLEY N Strong U.S. debut, couldn’t reach fave, projects ideal trip.
#1 RUNRUNJIMMYDUNN N Re-united with Bartlett, gets plenty of pace to rally into.
#2 BETTOR NOTBITTER A Was 18/5-5-3 as 7yo, returns off year layoff.
Race Summary Pat Stanley N made a good impression in his first U.S. start, chasing the favorite through a :55.1 back half and finishing second. He can stalk and pounce in a speed-laden field. Play 4-1 and 4-2 exactas.

                      # 6 LITTLE MAZZY 6/1
                      # 12 THE WANT OF A NAIL 5/2
                      # 7 SMALL HOPE 9/2
LITTLE MAZZY is my choice. Put up a reliable speed fig in the last race. Can run another good one in this race. Solid average speed figures in turf sprint races make this racer a definite contender. Has been close at the finishing post most every time lately. THE WANT OF A NAIL - This gelding has been consistently running well in his latest outings. Demasi has one of the strongest winning percentages in this group of animals with entries running at this distance and surface. SMALL HOPE - Has decent Equibase Class Figures relative to this group of animals - worth a look. Shows strong Equibase Speed Figs on average overall when compared with the rest of this field.

Keeneland - Race #9 - Post: 5:30pm - Stakes - 9.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $500,000 Class Rating: 116 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. Presented by Dixiana (Grade 1)

                        Rating:

                        #4 MAGIC ATTITUDE (GB) (ML=5/2)
                        #8 CALIFORNIA KOOK (ML=12/1)

MAGIC ATTITUDE (GB) - Castellano comes to ride again after getting to know the filly in the last race. Owns the highest Equibase speed figure on the turf at this distance. Can't help but like the 2nd time addition of Lasix by the trainer today. An indication Delacour thinks she can win. CALIFORNIA KOOK - This rider/trainer duo has been producing a very favorable ROI, right at +32. Just missed hitting the board on Sep 6th at Del Mar. With pretty decent odds today, she has my interest.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #1 HARVEY'S LIL GOIL (ML=3/1), #2 SWEET MELANIA (ML=7/2), #7 MICHELINE (ML=6/1),

HARVEY'S LIL GOIL - The speed fig last out doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class rating of today's event. Mark this thoroughbred as a possibly overvalued contestant. SWEET MELANIA - This filly notched a rating in her last event which likely isn't good enough in today's race. MICHELINE - The speed fig last out doesn't fit very well in this contest when I look at the class figure of today's race. Mark this thoroughbred as a possibly overvalued equine.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #4 MAGIC ATTITUDE (GB) to win. Have to have odds of at least 3/2 or better though

                          # 1 GAMBINI 8/5
I think LUCK IS MY NAME is a very good choice. Rivera has recent return on investment figs which make this entrant a good bet. Could best this field based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 80 - of his last race. EXETER - He has been running quite well and the speed figures are among the best in this group. GAMBINI - He has been running solidly and the speed figs are among the most competitive in this group. Has performed solidly lately in route races, posting a nifty 79 avg Equibase speed fig.

                            #7 STAR OF NIGHT (ML=3/5)
                            #4 COACH RUBE (ML=6/1)

BOUNDTOBEBAD - When a thoroughbred finishes in the top three as often as this filly does, you will usually want to use her in your exotic wagers. The jock/conditioner tandem of Hiraldo and Casey has a strong return on investment together. This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Hiraldo gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. STAR OF NIGHT - This filly is a gem of consistency, almost always in the money. Racing over a familiar track, where she has won multiple times before, I have to put this one at the top of my list of choice plays. Bocachica and Runco have had great success together over the last twelve months. This filly is at the top in earnings per race. Check out this thoroughbred in the paddock. COACH RUBE - Looking at this filly's running lines, I see she's almost always on the board. Have to give this filly a good shot. Ran a good race last time out within the last thirty days. This filly might as well call Charles Town home. Don't overlook how she races well over this track. This thoroughbred absolutely loves this oval. All her trips to the winner's circle have been here at Charles Town.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 NAVY SWORD (ML=8/1),

NAVY SWORD - The speed rating last out doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class rating of today's event. Mark this horse as a likely underlay.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - STAR OF NIGHT - Betting the equine with the best last race speed figure is a good angle. None higher than this filly's last one.
