Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Pick 4 Analysis

    October 15, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
There are 14 races scheduled at Hoosier Park tonight and the 0.50 Pick 4 begins in Race 3. The sequence will have a $10,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 3

1-The Optimist (5/2)-Nine-year-old has been camera shy this year going 1-19. Doesn't have much gate speed but at this class could get sucked around for a rare win. Not a fan of accepting a short price but this is a soft group and last was better.
6-Messi N (9/5)-Ohio invader has been racing on the 5/8's but does show a 150.4 mark at the Big M last year and meets easier.
10-Keystone Magneto (10-1)-Usually starts slowly but did show a 26.4 opening quarter 2 starts back. Will swing for a price and can close well. Miller could leave to get a close-up seat and roll by late at nice odds.

    Race 4

2-Sugar And Spite (5/2)-4-year-old meets easier, likes to race close to the top and can do so with this post draw. Short price and is only 2-25 in 2020 but is hard to leave out versus this crew which includes five 3-year-olds.
3-Jd's Queen Lori (9/2)-Drops out of the same class as #2 and tries Lasix for the 2nd time. Tetrick takes a seat and should be put in play.
5-Eternal Bliss (20-1)-Widger takes a spin and that change might help this filly who has been stuck with outside posts in last 3. Did win one of those starts and may get away in a nice spot to find live cover at a juicy price.

    Race 5

1-Sunfirewindrain (5-1)-Will toss last from the 9-hole, winner of 5 of 15 starts here fits and is having a nice year. Putnam should have 7-time winner this year in the hunt.
3-Shady's Starlight (3-1)-Comes off an easy win versus this bunch and has taken 3 straight pictures. Sooner or later the streak will end but best to respect here. Has gone off at a good price in last 2 but that may not be the case this time.
7-Captain Zamperini (9/2)-Ode claimed for $10k on 7/29 and it turned out to be a very nice purchase. Has hit the board in 6 of 8 since the claim and goes back on Lasix tonight. Gets post relief and should be a square price.

    Rae 6

4-Cajun Lightning (9/2)-Just missed versus the $20k claimers and then beat the $30's handily. Was claimed for $15k and since then has won 2 of 3 and looks like a major player again.
7-Rising To The Top (5-1)-Seven-year-old had had success at HoP winning 15 of 64 starts. Comes off an impressive win from the rail and can still be a threat from post 7.
8-Better Than Some (8-1)-Looking for a more alert start and should offer a solid price. Did race the back half in 54.3 in last. The pace could be lively tonight and the price should be right.

    0.50 Pick 4

    1,6,10/2,3,5/1,3,7/4,7,8

      Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

      Delaware Park - Race #2
#2 Moneyinthebanksey Lightly raced runner got two turns last time and was a strong 2nd behind a runaway winner, drew well, and has a world of upside; look out.
#6 Won the Byng Dropper was going 1 1/2 miles last time, so he's got some foundation, and his figures stack up, though his lack of speed wont help; in the mix.
#3 Fine N Dandy Major underlay was 3rd to the pick last time at 9-10 after being pressured early, which is likely to happen again here; tread very lightly here.
Race Summary You're not seeing that 6-1 ML, but even 7-2 seems fair on a runner going the right way, which is more than you can say for many here, so play him in all the slots, and especially the early Pk4 as well, as this is a crew there for the taking, and if he improves off his last, which is very likely, the rest of these are in deep water.
      Delaware Park - Race #3
#3 Rogue Rage Tactical runner was marooned out wide last time when a distant 5th, so this is a better post, his prior for is very solid, the price will be right, and he drops 7 pounds as well; upset special.
#1 Disturbingthepeace Stiff class dropper was overmatched in the MSW last time, so this move should wake him up, but he didn't run an inch last time, the rail is no bargain, and he'll be overbet; trying to beat.
#5 O'Haire Tricky read had some solid runs against better at Tampa, but they were on the turf, he's never run on the dirt, and isn't exactly bred for it on the top side either; mixed signals in this corner.
Race Summary The price will be right on the 3, even though his runs two and three-back make him a player here, and the favorites are no great shakes either, so play him in all the slots, and especially the early Pk4, and the Pk5 as well, since a win would add plenty of value to both sequences.
      Delaware Park - Race #7
#7 Live and Let Live Speedster dueled and tired at GP last time but now adds Lasix and should like this easier crew, and the debut win was strong, and this attack post is perfect; love her chances here.
#6 Laughin' Place The chalk drops in class and owns the best figures here, but all three were in the slop, and the debut 3rd was timed with a sun dial, so on dry land she needs to prove it; second-best.
#1 Mt Expensive Gift Stalker wasn't far behind the 6 last time and can trip out off the speed, and has been in fine form of late too, so if you don't believe in the top-2, then she's your gal; not the price stab.
Race Summary You won't get rich on the 7 but that 3-1 ML seems very fair against a group like this, especially since was facing better down south, so play her aggressively to win and place, while getting some added value by keying her in the Pk5, and late Pk4 as well, as she looks primed to get back on the beam, especially Lasix being added.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Laurel Park - Race #5
#4 Chelsea Wall Should still offer a pretty fair price after the debut try behind a runaway winner, and she's got some upside with that race under her belt.
#5 Be Sneaky Debuts for a capable barn while bringing some intriguing works along the way. Check the double will pays and tote for clues.
#2 Union Tatters Looks like the one to beat off the Pimlico debut, and while he was no serious threat that day, this group is probably a bit softer top to bottom.
Race Summary Chelsea Wall was 48/1 in the debut run, and she turned in a decent effort that day behind a tough winner. With any move forward in this second start, she's probably good enough to threaten with these at a nice number.
        Laurel Park - Race #6
#3 Al Brown Steps up to try winners after a couple of really nice efforts earlier in the year here, and he should be in line for a great trip from close range.
#2 Plot the Dots Dull turf form is clouding what is otherwise really sharp dirt form right now, and he can get a first-over pressing trip with these.
#7 Miami Mumbles Tactical type proved a good fit at this level last out, and like the top pair, he is another with tactical pace to work out a trip near the top.
Race Summary Al Brown gets the slight edge in what feels like a pretty tough race for the level. Plot the Dots is probably the one to beat, but I'm not sure we've yet seen the best from Al Brown. He has had only two starts -- both very sharp -- and now he returns for what should be a really great tracking trip while trying winners.
        Laurel Park - Race #7
#10 Grand Skylark Should be able to get a decent trip from midpack, and there aren't many imposing players signed on in here once get get past the filly drawn just outside of her.
#11 Epic Idea Her best turf sprint tries would almost surely land this, but the price is probably going to get a bit shorter than it realistically should be.
#12 Factorintheheat Tends to finish with a bit of punch on the turf, and that may be enough to help her land a an underneath share with these.
Race Summary Think this could be a race that ends up on the slow side late, and that might benefit Grand Skylark. Her races tend to be sort of even, but that might play well in a spot where the pace could get quick.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #4
#8 JULA BEAUTY AM Chased fave and faded, takes some catching in third start this year.
#1 BASTION Second in same spot two back, outrun against better in latest.
#4 ROSALIE SWAN Late runner has compiled 9/1-5-1 record as a 3-year-old.
Race Summary Jula Beauty Am chased the 6-to-5 winner through soft middle fractions and was passed by deep closers for the minor awards. She gets Callahan to drive and can make good use of her speed in this spot despite drawing outside. Play 8-1 and 8-4 exactas.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
#7 DR SPENGLER Steady gain while wide, should be tighter for second start off month rest.
#6 TIKI TAKA Repelled bid by pocket sitter and favorite to prevail, enters new barn.
#8 LMC MASS OAK Takes needed class drop, must stay in closer contact early.
Race Summary Dr Spengler couldn’t find a seat from the same starting spot, advanced steadily behind cover and finished well while 4-wide. He can turn the tables on two of the rivals that finished ahead of him with a good trip. Play 7-6 and 7-8 exactas.
          Hoosier Park - Race #7
#8 EEYORE Traffic trouble proved costly, today’s Best Bet despite post.
#7 SAND SNIPER Mild bid from post 10 as the beaten favorite, running in fast races at this level.
#6 BOBCAT BAY Carried speed to three wins in his last five starts.
Race Summary Eeyore was hemmed in while the top pair separated from the field. He found running room too late and closed with a rush to finish second. Play 8-6 and 8-7 exactas.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Gulfstream Park West - Race #3
#2 Free to Fly Has been hard-pressed to get into contention against higher levels and returns to the claiming price at which she last won. In the mix throughout.
#6 Markistan Won three straight and then settled for fourth at a higher level in her latest; can get a good stalking trip and could be difficult to hold off.
#9 Panarea Was an easy winner at a higher level and was claimed by Rodriguez two back, and then followed with a good second. Drops to half the price at which she last appears.
Race Summary Free to Fly won at this level and was then outrun by tougher; back to a comfortable spot and can finish vs. these.
Gulfstream Park West - Race #5
#1 Royal Habibi Lost a photo at this level in just her second start and will welcome the six furlongs; can be much better in this spot.
#3 Miss Italy Dug in for a gate-to-wire score last out, which came over this strip; has a legit chance to repeat.
#6 Patrick's Lass Romped last time in her first over the dirt; has excellent speed and can be a factor from the start.
Race Summary Royal Habibi and has been good at shorter distances but looks like can only get better the more distance she gets.
Gulfstream Park West - Race #7
#7 R U Lucky Won three of his last four and five of his last eight; has been at several different levels and has been a play at all of them.
#6 Rebelde Was up in time after a furious late move and can be a strong factor if she runs back to that effort; was on the board in four of his last five, with wins in two of those.
#1 Prince James Held on for second after being fairly close through the early portion; has been in good races and fits here.
Race Summary R U Lucky has a habit of winning, with seven victories in his 12 races; has won two of three at the distance and is game in any spot.

              Mitchell Newman

Thursday free play will be to play the Under in Game 4 of this Dodgers-Braves N.L. Championship Series.

It would be real easy to simply hop on the Over wagon tonight, especially after the Dodgers scored 11 runs in the top half of the first inning last night en-route to a 15-3 clobbering of the Bravos, but I have a feeling that tonight things are not going to be as blown out of proportion as they were last night.

L.A. is expected to have Clayton Kershaw on the hill after missing the past 2 days with back spasms. Kershaw has gone 2-0 this postseason with an ERA of 1.93. His numbers against Atlanta have been top-shelf, as he is 5-0 is his 11 career starts against the Bravos with a 1.78 ERA.

Atlanta counters with rookie Bryse Wilson who will be making his first career postseason start and just his third start of the season - 7th season appearance this year. Again, it would be easy to say the Dodgers bats once again tee-off on the rookie - and that may well happen - but I think tonight we see enough offense to flirt with the total but not reach it.

Things settle back down to a normal baseball game tonight and the Dodgers-Braves hold Under the total.

              1* L.A. DODGERS-ATLANTA UNDER

                    Woodbine - Race #6 - Post: 5:06pm - Optional Claiming - 7.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $60,300 Class Rating: 90

                    Rating:

                    #4 SILENCE BREAKERS (ML=6/1)
                    #8 YZERMAN (ML=12/1)
                    #6 FINALIST (ML=2/1)

SILENCE BREAKERS - I figure Biamonte is making a good move here. This gelding can only benefit from the shorter trip. Finished off the board last out at Woodbine, but was within 5 lengths of the winner. Opening at 6/1 makes me think he's got a chance. YZERMAN - This gelding is in nice form. Ran first on October 1st. Wired the field on Oct 1st at Woodbine. Quite possible he can do it again right here. FINALIST - Jock jumped on this gelding's back for the first time on Sep 12th. Should be in touch with the animal even better today. I like this gelding. Has the highest earnings per start (EPS) in here today.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 LUCAS N' LORI (ML=3/1), #7 DOCTOR UPTOWN (ML=4/1), #2 TRICKY MAGICIAN (ML=8/1),

LUCAS N' LORI - Nice race on September 24th at Woodbine, but the fact that there are no workouts since has to make one a little worried. This gelding hasn't had any recent accomplishments in sprint events. Not easy to wager on him in this event. DOCTOR UPTOWN - Morning line of 4/1 make this horse a pass by my examination. TRICKY MAGICIAN - Tough to put any cash on this gelding on the win end. Likes to end up on the board though. Won't be easy for this thoroughbred to beat this field off of that last speed figure. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put him on the likely underpriced equines list.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #4 SILENCE BREAKERS on the nose if you can get odds of 7/2 or more

                      # 1 CREST DRIVE 4/1
                      # 6 IRON ROB 5/2
My choice in here is SMOOTHEE LEE. He must be given consideration given the competitive speed figures. Going in a dirt sprint race gives this gelding a very strong shot. Had one of the best speed figures of this group of animals in his last contest. CREST DRIVE - Anaya and Velasquez are a potent pair for dividends. He has a good opportunity for this race as handler, Velasquez, has very strong win clip with horses going this distance. IRON ROB - Has to be carefully examined here on the basis of the figs in the speed realm alone. Has been running in the most competitive company of the field recently.

                        Keeneland - Race #5 - Post: 3:18pm - Maiden Special - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $70,000 Class Rating: 90

                        Rating:

                        #3 CONFESS (ML=10/1)

                        #6 THRILL RIDE (ML=3/1)

CONFESS - Ran a winning race July 27th, but just couldn't beat the winner. If this colt gets out of the gate cleanly, he'll be tough to catch. Got some betting action in only race on July 27th at Monmouth Park, but finished second. Has a shot in today's race. I like this colt. Has the highest earnings per start in here. FASTLY - I am keen on that recent contest on Sep 26th at Churchill Downs where he finished second. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run his best in the 3rd or 4th start back. This colt's last figure notched on September 26th is uppermost in last race speed ratings. THRILL RIDE - Hernandez is back up for another event today after racing atop this horse for the first time on September 5th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 MYSTIC NIGHT (ML=3/1), #8 TOTALLY JIMBO (ML=6/1), #2 READY TO ANSWER (ML=8/1),

MYSTIC NIGHT - I foresee a disappointing effort for this horse in this event. TOTALLY JIMBO - Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some recent success in sprint events in order to bet on him. READY TO ANSWER - If he goes off anywhere near the morning line odds of 8/1, I'll have to pass.

FIFTYFIVE STRONG is tough to overlook as the bet in here. Is difficult not to examine based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been very good - 71 avg - of late. Has to be given a chance based on the formidable Equibase speed fig garnered in the last affair. He has quite good class ratings, averaging 90, and has to be considered in this competition. DODGER - Will probably go to the lead and should never look back. Has posted strong speed figures in dirt route races in the past. DEO VOLENTE - This horse has some longshot angles going for him. The drastic drop in competition can only aid this entrant this time out.

MLB public betting, line movement October 15
                            Patrick Everson

Cody Bellinger and the Dodgers can tie up the NLCS in Game 4 Thursday night against the Astros. Caesars sportsbooks opened the Dodgers -200 favorites and quickly moved to -215.

MLB betting odds once again give us two big games, with the NLCS and ALCS both on the Thursday schedule. The Los Angeles Dodgers aim to tie the NLCS in Game 4 against the Atlanta Braves, while the Tampa Bay Rays get their second crack at ending the ALCS against the Houston Astros.

Multiple oddsmakers provided insights on MLB opening lines and early movement, sharp money and public betting for Thursday’s games.

                            MLB line movement

Los Angeles climbed into the NLCS with a bang, piling up 11 runs in the first inning of Game 3 and coasting to a 15-3 victory Tuesday to pull within 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. Now, the Dodgers plan to have scratched Game 2 starter Clayton Kershaw take the ball in the 8:08 p.m. ET Game 4.

Caesars sportbooks certainly expect Kershaw on the bump, opening the Dodgers -200 favorites late Wednesday night, with the Braves +180. Less than 30 minutes later, the line was up to Dodgers -215/Braves +190.

Houston nabbed its first win of the ALCS, topping Tampa Bay 4-2 in Game 4 Wednesday night, but the Rays still hold a commanding 3-1 lead entering a 5:07 p.m. ET Game 5. With Thursday’s starters not yet set, most sportsbooks didn’t put up a line Wednesday night, so check back for updates.

With the line for NLCS Game 4 coming out late Wednesday night, the consensus sample was very limited. However, Kershaw’s corner was the early leader, with the Dodgers getting 67 percent of picks against the Braves.
