Al Cimaglia: Pompano Park Pick 4 Analysis

    November 30, 2020 | By Al Cimaglia
Pompano Park has an 8-race card set to go with the feature kicking off the action, an Open Handicap Trot with an $11,000 purse. The 0.50 Pick 4 begins in Race 5. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Last night, the driver with the hottest hands was John MacDonald with three wins. In turn the leading trainer on the card was Tee Wine who also made three trips to the winner's circle.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 5

2-Stormy Dude (5-1)-This is 3rd start off the bench. Broke stride and then had a big try last week. Camera shy 6-year-old is only 2-22 over the last 2 years but deserves respect in this spot.
3-Bjanthony (20-1)-Took the long way around in last but kept coming. Shouldn't be close to 20-1 but could offer a nice price and old-timer can be in the hunt.
4-Purpose Blue Chip (6/5)-Lightly raced 5-year-old deserves favoritism but is no bargain at this price. Hard to leave out but needs to be better than last start.
5-Katkin And Coke (5/2)-This is one Plano trainee that didn't come off the bench on fire. Does fit with this group and has 4 wins in 17 starts here. Was bet hard in last and might be ready for a better effort.

    Race 6

2-Boli (3/2)-Drops after 2 even tries but 8-year-old was off since 9/12. Hennessey owns, trains, and drives, and might be bet down again. Could be ready for a winning effort and has taken 39 pictures in 88 races at the Pomp.
6-Miss Flora (12-1)-Eight-year-old mare still likes to compete. Took the long way around in both local starts with the trainer aboard. Macomber takes the lines and will use at a price. Has won 9 of 56 at PPk and did bank over $64,000 in 2019.

    Race 7

1-Jack Rules (6-1)-With this post draw it's probably best to not overlook. Does step-up but winning right back could be a reality at a square price.
2-Dragin The Wagon (6-1)-Beaten chalk also steps-up but gets some needed post relief. Should get the top or the 2 hole and 10-year-old could win for the 9th time in 24 tries at PPk.
5-Keegan Ho (5-1)-Plano trainee is looking for 3rd straight. Does also step-up but so do 5 of the 8 in this field. Made it look easy in last and draws the same post here.

    Race 8

3-Stop Resistin (3-1)-Broke in 1st start at the Pomp and then was tightened up nicely at the same class last week and cashed a 3rd place check. Could be sitting on a big try but keep in mind was just claimed for $10k at PcD on 10/18.
6-Bucketlist Hanover (5/2)-Steps-up after a gate to wire win from post 7. Makes 3rd start on Lasix and this guy can stay good for a while. Does like the track, winning 12 of 43 starts in south Florida.
7-Judge Ken (5-1)-The Tee Wine barn was red-hot last night, and this 4-year-old drops to a more comfortable level.

    0.50 Pick 4

    2,3,4,5/2,6/1,2,5/3,6,7

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Mountaineer - Race #4
#5 Maddymax Can bounce back off the flat run last time out, and prior to that she had been in the kind of form that would be competitive with this bunch.
#4 Diva Banker The one to beat, but she's no sure thing to back up that big effort last time out at what will probably be a short kind of price.
#6 Liberty Fire She has won her last two local sprint tries, and she should be in line for a great trip from close range while while cutting back off the fading run last out.
Race Summary Maddymax could be sitting on something better this time around, while likely favorite Diva Banker may be sitting on a step back. The prices won't likely reflect that possibility, and 'Max could get a bit lost on the board.
          Mountaineer - Race #6
#7 Robertos Ticket Can get a good run near the top from this wide draw, and that gives him a tactical edge on the likely chalk who will be rolling late.
#2 Disciple Figures to get bet in this spot, and it's worth noting that while the form makes him the one to beat, he has generally been a two-turn horse and has the sprint question to answer at a short price.
#6 California Onyx Showed only mild late interest when sent to post at 10/1 in the debut run, but he can probably move forward off that run and may improve on dry land.
Race Summary Robertos Ticket seems like the right one to use to try and beat Disciple. He has better positional pace and has been in pretty reliable form in recent starts.
          Mountaineer - Race #8
#3 Three Illusions Would want just about every bit of that 3/1 ML offering to land here after the clunker last time out, but she'll go off the claim for a barn that is striking well with limited starters this meet. Bounce back potential.
#1 Accolades Galore Reliable type was the winner in that same common race as the top choice, but she'll probably take a bit of heat from the inside with a couple of other pace elements signed on.
#5 War Eagle's Love Has faced some tough groups at Kentucky Downs and Keeneland in recent starts, and she has some chance to sit back and hope the pace players go at it early.
Race Summary Three Illusions stopped badly last time out, but she is capable of something better than that and may be able to turn the tables at an improved price.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Mahoning Valley - Race #2
#2 Chromium Tired last time in his first effort here this season; made a big late move for the win two back at Thistledown and should have a similar pace set-up.
#1 Blingitonagain Ran evenly vs. better last time and can move up on this class drop; speed, rail.
#7 Fastest Max Has enough speed to get into the mix early from the outside and can apply pressure throughout.
Race Summary Chromium can get a ground-saving trip behind a quick pace and should have the late kick to be dangerous.
            Mahoning Valley - Race #4
#3 Dancin' Rosie Was a winner in three of her last five and has the speed to take to these early; good enough to stay.
#1 Dream Fever Lost a photo finish last time she was in an extended battle for the final quarter; her best can make her a big factor here.
#4 Sole Factor Has good late energy and will benefit if there's a speed battle; can rally strongly and this group.
Race Summary Dancin' Rose should be strong from the start and can take a toll on others that want the lead; tough to the end of this one.
            Mahoning Valley - Race #6
#1 My Mae Day Was a clear winner last out and has taken three of his last four; in top form and the one to beat.
#8 Gold Shark Got a little third and finished third last time and can improve in his second off the claim for Bernardini.
#2 Forest Chatter Dug in last time and has won three of his last six; firmly in the mix.
Race Summary My Mae Day has good speed, can save the rail and usually digs in; can handle the slight step up in class.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 3 WILLY I AM 3/1
                  # 2 CHROMIUM 8/1
                  # 6 DIMATE 8/1
WILLY I AM is the strongest bet in this race. Could best this field based on the speed rating - 72 - of his last affair. Must be given a chance given the class of races run as of late. Has been racing soundly and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. CHROMIUM - Shows signs of the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 71 speed figure which is one of the most favorable in this field. Has been running soundly and has among the most favorable speed in the race for today's distance. DIMATE - Is a solid contender based on figures recorded recently under today's conditions. This equine has a fantastic win percentage in dirt sprints.

                    Parx Racing - Race #4 - Post: 1:46pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 69

                    Rating:

                    #10 LEAN ON E (ML=6/1)
                    #5 LEFTATTHEALTAR (ML=8/1)
                    #8 PASATIME (ML=4/1)

LEAN ON E - When this rider and handler work together you have to take a look. Silvera and Linder have been great together. LEFTATTHEALTAR - Have to make this filly a serious competitor; she comes off a strong outing on Nov 10th. Aboard this thoroughbred on November 10th and Gonzalez is yet again in the irons this time. Look at this pattern of improvement. 27/45/47 are the last three Equibase speed figures. Already raced against today's M/L choice on November 10th at Parx Racing and finished ahead of that one. Have to believe she can do it again in this race. PASATIME - I like to invest in this angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a solid contest within the last month. This horse isn't the morning line favorite, but finished ahead of today's M/L favorite in her last race (November 10th at Parx Racing).

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #2 MISS JASSER (ML=2/1), #3 WE FIVE (ML=3/1), #1 MUCHA SUERTE (ML=5/1),

MISS JASSER - Recent dropping speed figs of 46/34/15 give a sign that this animal may be going off form. WE FIVE - Doesn't look to be in a strong situation this time around. MUCHA SUERTE - 5/1 is just too low of a value to take on most any horse that has run poorly in back to back efforts. Garnered a substandard fig last race out in a $10,000 Maiden Claiming race on November 10th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #10 LEAN ON E to win if you can get at least 2/1 odds
                    EXACTA WAGERS: 10 with [5,8]

Race 3 - Maiden Claiming - 5.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $22000 Class Rating: 58

FOR ACCREDITED LA BRED MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $20,000.

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 3 C C CROWN'S CHOICE 9/2
                      # 5 NOON'S BABYGIRL 8/1
                      # 6 GUILTY CONFESSION 5/2
C C CROWN'S CHOICE seems to be the bet in here. NOON'S BABYGIRL - Has been running well lately and will almost certainly be up near the lead early on. She has very good class ratings, averaging 67, and has to be given a chance for this event. GUILTY CONFESSION - She looks very good in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point. Looks very good for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid numbers in dirt sprint races recently.

                        Mountaineer Park - Race #6 - Post: 8:50pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,500 Class Rating: 73

                        Rating:

                        #4 YEUDIEL (ML=9/2)

YEUDIEL - He'll be laying in the catbird's seat, right behind the front runners. Forgive the off the board finish on the off track last time out. Under normal track conditions, has a fair chance in this race.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #1 DISCIPLE (ML=7/5), #5 ELUSIVE MOTION (ML=7/2), #7 ROBERTOS TICKET (ML=5/1),

DISCIPLE - This pony showed very liitle last time out of the box finishing fourth. Can't expect improvement in today's event. ELUSIVE MOTION - The Brain cautions me to keep my distance from thoroughbreds in short distance races that haven't hit the board in short distance affairs lately. The eighth place finish position in the last race was not the greatest. ROBERTOS TICKET - The speed figure last out doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class figure of today's race. Mark this thoroughbred as a questionable challenger.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 YEUDIEL to win at post-time odds of 1/1 or better

My numbers project this total to be 161 which is 8.5 points over the line which is good enough for a modest bet. I was afraid the line is skewed because of the 4OT point-fest GSU had with Georgia Tech but even if you take out the OT there were 154 points. A modest value for a modest bet I am betting half a unit. Over 152.5

                            Play: Minnesota -14.0 (-110)
This line is deceiving. These two teams just played each other on Nov 28 which ended Min 88-73. But the game before that Loyola barely got by Southern Utah While Minnesota blew away Green Bay. My numbers say this game is 89-62 so we are taking Minnesota -14. I'll be honest I am not overwhelmingly confident on this one so bet small. I am betting a half unit. If you bet the numbers over time it all works out in the end.
