This East Carolina team is one that I will be looking to back often this season, especially once conference play starts. The Pirates went just 11-20 overall and 5-13 in the AAC a year ago, but ECU was one of the most inexperienced teams in the country. That's not the case in 2020, as the Pirates bring back all 5 starters and should be poised for their best showing in the AAC since joining back in 2014-15.
Pirates are already 3-0, which is an accomplishment, given it took them 10 games a season ago to hit the 3-win mark. I've really been impressed with ball security. Last year they ranked 211 in turnover percentage (19.3%). They are 44th early on at just 15.7%. They are also shooting 48% from the field and 74% from the free throw line.
UNC-Wilmington is 2-1 off back-to-back wins, but have not played in more than a week, as they last took the floor on Nov. 28th. Their two wins are also against teams that rank 225 or worse at KenPom in UNC-Asheville and Troy. Seahawks are only shooting 44% from the field and in their only game vs a top 200 team (Western Carolina) they gave up 98 points. Give me the Pirates -7.5!

The set-up: Antonio Gibson has been a bright spot for Washington this year, as the rookie has run the ball 139 times for 645 yards and 11 touchdowns. Pittsburgh is good vs. the run though, allowing the eighth-fewest yards per game on the ground.
The pick: Washington's secondary is its strength, but Ben Roethlisberger and ocmpany are 5-1 ATS in their last six following an ATS win. Washington on the other hand is 0-5 ATS in its last five following a 14-plus points victory in its last outing (hammered Dallas 41-16.) After a sub-par performance in the win over Baltimore last time out, I think that Pittsburgh has something to prove on the national stage tonight. Consider laying the points in the early game Monday.

The Florida Atlantic Owls and North Florida Ospreys meet Monday at the UNF Arena in Jacksonville. Dusty May is in his third season at FAU and began the season 34-31 in his first two seasons. The Owls opened the season 0-2 but have rebounded with back-to-back wins and go for a THIRD straight against the Ospreys, who have opened 0-5. Matthew Driscoll is in his 12th season at North Florida and he's had three 20-win seasons, including a trip to the NCAA Tourney in 2015 and a 21-9 record last year, before the season was canceled. However, with North Florida's 0-5 start this season, his career record at the school sits at 184-184!
FAU was 17-17 last season but is deeper and more experienced this year. The 6-7 Ingram led the team in scoring last season and is tops again through four games this season, averaging 15.0 PPG while adding 6.0 RPG. Guard Forrest (9.3) and swingman Winchester (6.3- & 3.8) plus 6-6 forward Blackshear (6.8 & 4.7) and the 6-11 Silins (6.8 & 4.8) round out the major returning contributors, while Minnesota transfer Greenlee is averaging 10.8 PPG. North Florida's problem is that FOUR double digit scorers are gone from last seasons 21-win team. The 6-8 Hendricksen is back and playing well, averaging 17.3 & 5.3. He's joined up front by the 6-8 Endicott (9.3 & 7.8) plus a trio of guards combining to average 24 PPG.
A look at FAU averaging 81.8 PPG does not tell the whole story, as the Owls averaged just 63.0 PPG in starting 0-2 but 105.5 PPG in going 2-0 against very weak opposition. However, what is relevant is the team allowing just 58.3 PPG. That's because North Florida is scoring just 61.8 PPG and allowing 82.8 PPG in going 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS (lone cover was at plus-24 in a 77-59 loss). FAU was just 2-12 SU on the road last season but this is a VERY winnable road contest and I'm willing to lay the points.

Monday CBB Free play. My selection is on the 'under' between Chattanooga and Middle Tennessee State at 7 pm et on Monday.
I think this is a case of early season pace numbers factoring a little too heavily into the total. Note that while Middle Tennessee State ranks T65th in pace rating it hasn't done much with that tempo, shooting a miserable 36% from the field. Neither team has shown the ability to knock down threes with any consistency, averaging an identical 6.7 made per game. MTSU recorded an impressive win over Murray State last time out and was active at the defensive end of the floor, posting four blocks and eight steals. That was Murray State's first loss of the season. Meanwhile, Chattanooga is a perfect 3-0, sitting tied for 51st in the country in defensive rating. A big part of Chattanooga's offensive success has been its ability to grab offensive boards and produce second chance points. I look for the Blue Raiders to do a better job of cleaning up on the glass than the Mocs previous opponents, however. Take the under (8*).

UC-Santa Barbara (-3.5) is worth a look as a slim home favorite against Loyola Marymount in Monday's college basketball action. Loyola is simply getting too much love in this spot. This is a very good Santa Barbara team. It might be the best in the Big West and it's going to be motivated to get a win here, as these two are playing a home-and-home with Saturday's meeting set for Loyola-Marymount. I wouldn't be shocked at all if the Gauchos ran away with this one. Play UC-Santa Barbara -3.5!

They are the better team at 8-3 this season while the 49ers have done a good job of getting to 5-6 with all the injuries they’ve had. But this game is essentially on a neutral field with the 49ers having to move their home games from Santa Clara to Arizona due to COVID. And the Bills haven’t forgotten about losing on a Hail Mary to the Cardinals in Arizona the last time they were here. They want to erase that taste from their mouths. The Bills have one of the best offenses in the NFL at 27.2 PPG this year. And now their defense is starting to play like it did last season now that they have gotten several key players back from injury recently. The 49ers are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games against teams that give up 24 PPG or more. The Bills are 24-9 ATS in their last 33 against NFC West teams. Buffalo is 6-1-2 ATS in its last 9 games as a road dog. San Francisco is 7-21-1 ATS in its last 29 games as a home favorite. Take Buffalo.

Shane Burcar took over as interim coach at Northern Arizona last year and led the Lumberjacks to a surprising 16-14 season. He has now earned the full-time gig after the program had four straight seasons of 10 or fewer wins prior to him taking now. Junior Cameron Shelton is back after averaging 14.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game last year. But this is more of a play against Arizona than anything. The Wildcats lost all five starters from last year and seven of their top eight scorers. Plus they are missing three of their top players in Kerr Kriisa, Daniel Batch and Ira Lee. The lack of experience and talent has shown in the early going. Arizona only beat Gramblng 74-55 as a 30-point favorite and Eastern Washington 70-67 as a 13-point favorite in a shaky 2-0 start. The Lumberjacks can hang around for 40 minutes tonight. Give me Northern Arizona.
