The buy sign is back on Michigan State after the Spartans won their second straight game beating 15th-ranked Rutgers, 68-45, at home this past Tuesday. It wasn't just the Spartans winning, but how they won. This probably was Michigan State's best defensive game of the season. The Spartans held the Scarlet Knights to 30.5 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded them, 45-25.
It has been an up-and-down season for Michigan State. Just three weeks ago, they were unbeaten and ranked fourth in the nation. Then came three straight defeats to open Big Ten Conference action. Now it's safe again to back the Spartans especially in this matchup being at home against Purdue. The Boilermakers are 0-3 SU, 0-2-1 ATS on the road in the Big Ten with losses to Iowa by 15 points, to Rutgers by five and to Illinois by eight. Purdue is 1-4-1 ATS in its last six overall away contests and has yet to cover against a foe with a winning record this season. I expect those trends to hold up here. Aaron Henry is playing at a high level for the Spartans and they have the depth and defensive savvy to bother Purdue star big man Trevion Williams, who is shooting 60 percent from the field in the Boilermakers' Big Ten road matchups. The rest of the Boilermakers are shooting only 37.6 percent from the field in Big Ten road contests.

Not many people will be looking to back Detroit tonight, but I see some decent value here with the Pistons as a 7.5-point home dog against the Suns. Detroit comes in having lost 3 straight, but the last two were both on the road against the Bucks and the game before was against the Celtics. They had covered 3 straight prior to losing by 15 as a 11.5-point dog to Milwaukee in their last game.
Two key pieces that missed that last game will be available tonight, as Josh Jackson and Derrick Rose are both set to return from injury. Jackson is 2nd on the team in scoring at 15.5 ppg and Rose is 3rd at 15.3 ppg. Rose also leads the team with 5.4 apg.
The other key thing here is this is not an ideal spot for Phoenix, who will head east for the first time this season and will be playing in the first of a back-to-back before a much bigger game at Indiana tomorrow. Wouldn't be surprised at all if the Suns came out flat and maybe even rested a guy or two.
Detroit is 5-1 ATS last 6 off a SU loss by 10 or more and 4-1 ATS last 5 as a home dog. We also see that road favorites who have beat the spread by 36 or more points or their last 5 games, who have won 75% or more of their games and are playing a team that has won 25% or fewer are a mere 6-27 (18%) ATS dating back to 1996! Give me the Pistons +7.5!

This looks like a spot where we are going to get a big effort out of the New Orleans Pelicans tonight. They are coming off two straight tough losses by a combined 3 points. They will be highly motivated to get back in the win column here and should get the cover against the lowly Charlotte Hornets.
Charlotte is getting some respect off an upset road win over the Atlanta Hawks last time out. Gordon Hayward had a career-high 44 points in the win. But the Hornets had lost three in a row prior with all three losses by 15 points or more.
The Pelicans are 6-1 SU & 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings with the Hornets. New Orleans is 11-4 ATS in its last 15 home meetings with Charlotte. Bet the Pelicans Friday.

While the Hornets aren't going to impress anyone offensively, this is a team that plays quality defense. Ranking 12th in points per possession, and 5th in defensive turnover percentage. This squad has four players ranking in the Top 78 percentile in offensive assist percentage. So they are making quality passes and getting solid shots.
New Orleans is a bit overpriced here in our eyes. The Pelicans do one thing better than anyone in the league, grab offensive rebounds and keeping opponents from doing the same. Leading the league in both categories. But overall this team really struggles shooting from the floor. Can't trust this offense to lay this type of number against a good defensive squad.

The Memphis Grizzlies have been competitive even without JA Morant. They lost by 2 to the Lakers and by 4 to the Cavaliers in their last two games. And they are more than capable of taking down the Brooklyn Nets, who will be without both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant tonight. It's a letdown spot for the Nets off their upset win over the 76ers on TNT last night. That followed up their upset home win over the Jazz as well. I think the Grizzlies are favored for good reason given the tough spot for the Nets. The Nets are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 games playing on zero rest. The Grizzlies are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games playing on zero rest. Memphis is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings. Give me the Grizzlies.

Is there a team prime a bounce back here? The jazz have lost two ugly games in a row to a short handed Nets team and to the Knicks. I think they respond here with a big effort. Bucks beating the Bulls and Pistons twice the last 3 games doesn't impress me. I think Utah matches up very well against them and love the Western vs Eastern Conference as dogs.

Milwaukee is coming off a couple of blowout wins over Detroit, but the Jazz are a far tougher team to beat than the Pistons.
Sure, Utah is coming off back-to-back losses as road favorites at Brooklyn and New York, but this team is at its best when catching points on the road (Jazz are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 games as a road underdog).
Milwaukee averages more points per game than any other team in the NBA, but I think regression is coming and Utah is not a team known for giving up easy buckets.

We will back Sacramento as a 5-point home dog against the Raptors tonight. Toronto was a really good team the last two years, but this is not the same caliber a team. They really miss Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol.
The books just have been extremely slow to adjust the number on this team and it's resulted in the Raptors repeatedly being overvalued. Toronto is 1-6 SU and 1-6 ATS with their only win coming at home against the Knicks. Raptors are 0-4 SU and 0-4 ATS on the road, where they are getting outscored by 6 ppg.
Kings could be without Fox for this game, but rookie Tyrese Haliburton is more than capable of shouldering the load at the point. Haliburton came off the bench in their last game after Fox got hurt and played 35 minutes, scoring 17 points with 7 rebounds, 6 assist and 3 steals. No way should the Raptors be this big of a favorite here. Bet the Kings +5!

The Los Angeles Lakers had their four-game winning streak snapped with a 118-109 loss to San Antonio at Staples Center floor tonight against the Chicago Bulls. The Bulls dropped a 128-124 decision at Sacramento to the Kings on Wednesday to fall to 4-5.
Coby White scored a career-high 36 points with seven assists and Zach LaVine contributed 32 points in the Wednesday loss. Wendell Carter Jr. grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds to go along with 11 points. What those three players all have in common is that they are each first round draft picks. Guards LaVine (24.7-4.9-4.2) was a 2014 first-round pick) and White (18.6-5.1-5.6) was a 2019 first-round pick. The 6-10 Carter (11.8 & 8.2) was a 2018 first-rounder. Let's NOT stop there. The 7-0 Markkanen (17.3 & 6.8) was a 2017 first-round pick, the 6-8 Porter (14.0 & 6.9) was a 2013 first-rounder and SF Williams (10.0) was picked in the first round in 2020. If this team can't make the postseason, what's the excuse?
The Lakers never led last night vs the Spurs. They tied the score late in the third quarter before the Spurs took command in the final period. Los Angeles outshot San Antonio 50 percent to 46.7 percent from the floor but fell victim to the Spurs' three-point shooting. San Antonio converted 16 of 35 three-pointer attempts to 10 of 30 for the Lakers. Of course, as LBJ (24.2-8.6-7.9) and A.D. (22.4 & 9.1) go, so go the Lakers. However, the addition of guard PG Schroder (17.7-4.1-4.7) and PF Harrell (12.1 & 7.3) make this season's team BETTER than the one that won the NBA title. Lay the points.

The set-up: Chicago upset Portland, then lost a close one in Sacramento. Chicago will be without Lauri Markkanen, Tomas Satoransky, Chandler Hutchison and Ryan Arcidiacono will all miss the game due to the NBA’s health and safety protocols (all have missed the last five games as well.) Zach LaVine is a great player, but after losing badly at home to the Spurs last night, I expect the Lakers to lay the hammer down here as they look to avoid dropping two in a row at home.
