    WASHINGTON @ BUFFALO | 01/14 | 7:00 PM EST
    WASHINGTON -135
ANALYSIS: The last time Buffalo played a game was roughly 10 months ago against these Capitals. The Sabres won 3-2 in a shootout despite getting outshot 35-26 on March 9, 2020. Washington is loaded on offense this season and now on defense with the additions of Zdeno Chara and Justin Schultz. I love Ilya Samsonov in goal full time after going 16-6 with a 2.55 GAA last season. Washington is by far the more talented team and has won 12 of the past 16 vs. Buffalo.

        Last Week Recap

We couldn't carry our 2020 momentum into 2021, losing 2.86 units at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Bryson DeChambeau finished one shot outside the top five, resulting in our tickets finding the bottom of a trash can. The lone bright spot was Sungjae Im earning a top 10 cash at +275.

        Event Preview

The Sony Open is the first full-field event on the PGA Tour in 2021. We will see 32 of the 42 competitors from last week tee it up in Honolulu this week at Waialae Country Club. Waialae features a flat terrain and narrow fairways, which will be a stark contrast coming from the Plantation Course last week.

        Winner - Webb Simpson (+1200) - 0.50 units
        Top 5 - Webb Simpson (-120) - 0.50 units

Simpson played about as poorly as he possibly could have in Maui and still finished T-17. He lost 6.58 strokes off the tee, the worst event for him in my database, so it's unlikely that he hits it that poorly again. Combine that with him finishing fifth in strokes gained approach last week and the fact that he's finished third and T-4 in his last two trips to Waialae, and I'm firing up Simpson in all formats.

        Winner - Abraham Ancer (+2500) - 0.33 units
        Top 10- Abraham Ancer (+250) - 0.33 units

Ancer flew up the leaderboard on Sunday last week, shooting a round of 66 (-7) en route to a T-17 finish. Waialae should be a much better fit for Ancer, who can take advantage of the flat, narrow par-70 layout.

        Winner - Brendon Todd (+5500) - 0.25 units
        Top 10- Brendon Todd (+500) - 0.40 units

Notice a trend here? Waialae is short and requires golfers who can find fairways and roll the rock. That's the blueprint for Todd, who finished T-13 last week at Kapalua. Todd's lack of distance beat him down at the Plantation Course, where he lost 5.15 strokes off the tee. He offset that with a stellar flat stick which is the most effective weapon he has lurking in his bag.

        Winner - Cameron Davis (+13500) - 0.15 units
        Top 10- Cameron Davis (+1100) - 0.25 units

Rarely do I fire outrights on golfers this long, but weird things happen after golfers have taken a long break, and Davis flashed some incredible raw talent last year. He contended at Wyndham and the Sanderson Farms. Waialae should be a happy hunting ground for the young Aussie, who finished T-9 here last season.

        Top 10- Sebastian Munoz (+500) - 0.45 units

Munoz played himself out of the Tournament of Champions on Thursday, opening with a 75 (+2). That didn't stop him from grinding away over the final three days, playing them in 18 under par. That was the second-best aggregate score over the final three rounds, behind only Joaquin Niemann, who lost in a playoff.

        Top 20- Brian Gay (+750) - 0.45 units

Gay has been feast or famine in the last six months, winning in Bermuda among many missed cuts. Gay has teed it up at the Sony Open on nine occasions, making the cut in seven of them. We aren't asking much of him to finish inside the Top 20, and these odds are too juicy to pass up.

Tournament Matchup - Webb Simpson (-118) over Harris English (-106) - 1 unit

These are two golfers I absolutely love, but English's win last week has shortened these odds to untenable levels. It wouldn't be hard to imagine a bit of a hangover for English, who just captured his first win since 2013. Simpson, on the other hand, is hungry and headed to one of the best course fits for him.

          UCF @ TEMPLE | 01/14 | 12:00 PM EST
          OVER 136
ANALYSIS: Temple's last two games have generated 150 and 147 points, and the Owls rank 284th in defensive efficiency. Look for the Over to improve to 7-2 in Temple's last nine games as a home underdog.

          SAN DIEGO ST @ UTAH ST. | 01/14 | 9:00 PM EST
          SAN DIEGO ST +2
ANALYSIS: The Aggies have won eight straight, but who have they beaten? In fact, only one of their nine wins this season has come against a team in KenPom's top 150. San Diego State is a veteran team that's beaten UCLA, Arizona State, Saint Mary's and Colorado State. The Aztecs are a bit undervalued after failing to cover three of its last four. Take the points.

          STANFORD @ UTAH | 01/14 | 5:00 PM EST
          STANFORD -1.5
ANALYSIS: This line is this low because the Cardinal have lost five straight visits to Utah. But right now Stanford is rolling and Utah is reeling. The Utes collapsed down the stretch versus Colorado to drop their fourth straight; they got outrebounded 49-31. All coach Larry Krytowiak could do was bemoan his team's lack of size. Stanford 6-9 forward Oscar da Silva (19.8 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 62.8 percent shooting) has led his team to three straight wins and should have another big game here. Lay it.

            N.Y. ISLANDERS @ N.Y. RANGERS | 01/14 | 7:00 PM EST
            N.Y. RANGERS -110
ANALYSIS: Thursday will be the NHL debut of highly-touted rookie and 2020 No. 1 overall pick Alexis Lafreniere of the Rangers. Lafreniere will make history as the franchise’s only other first overall pick, Andre Veilleux in 1965, never made it to the NHL. With Henrik Lundqvist gone, Igor Shesterkin takes over as the primary Rangers goaltender and was 10-2-0 as a rookie with a 2.52 GAA. He hasn't faced the Islanders, who go with Semyon Varlamov. The Russian wasn't good vs. the Blueshirts a season ago, going 0-2-1 with a 4.64 GAA. The Islanders are 1-4 in the last five meetings.

            CAROLINA @ DETROIT | 01/14 | 7:30 PM EST
            UNDER 6.5
ANALYSIS: Remember when the Red Wings were the marquee franchise in the NHL? Those days are LONG gone. They finished with by far the fewest points in the league last season, also last in goals allowed and in goals scored. I do think Detroit will struggle to score again this year, but the Wings should be much better in net with a 1-2 punch of Jonathan Bernier and Thomas Greiss. Carolina is a decent offensive team, but 6.5 goals seems too high here because Detroit could easily be blanked. The Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Detroit.

ANALYSIS: The Trail Blazers went all in for a 132-126 victory over Sacramento on Wednesday. CJ McCollum logged 42 1/2 minutes in a game that featured 12 lead changes. Over his career with Portland, the team is 0-10 ATS at home after a game as a favorite in which McCollum played more than 40 minutes. The Trail Blazers also are 0-8 ATS (-7.38 ppg) after a game as road favorites in which Damian Lillard made at least five 3-pointers and 0-8 ATS (-9.69 ppg) following a road contest in which they had more than eight times as many field-goal attempts as turnovers.

ANALYSIS: The Hornets are 0-16 OU on the road with less than two days' rest after a loss as underdogs in which they had a shot-per-turnover ratio of better than eight and 0-8 OU with less than two days' rest following a loss in which they never led. Toronto has a strong Under tendency against teams that get back on defense and block shots. The Raptors are 0-11 OU at home with extra rest after a road game versus a team that is getting less than 25 percent of rebounds on the offensive end and 0-11 OU with extra rest following a road contest against a team that's averaging more than five blocks per contest.

The Blazers were down big against the Kings in the third quarter Wednesday but stormed back to pull off a win. The problem is, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum both logged at least 42 minutes in that game, so this quick turnaround might be difficult. Caris LeVert likely won’t be available, and the Pacers lost Victor Oladipo in that trade, but T.J. McConnell is expected to return. He’s not a big name, but he’s a key part of their second unit. Add in the Blazers being 1-4 ATS at home this season and taking the points could be the way to go here.
