Chelsea should cruise to a comfortable victory over Newcastle when the teams clash at Stamford Bridge on Monday.
The Blues look rejuvenated after firing manager Frank Lampard and bringing in former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel to replace him. Chelsea has won three Premier League games in a row and defeated Barnsley in the FA Cup during the week.
It is back up to fifth place in the Premier League standings and has a great chance of securing Champions League qualification next season. Tuchel was able to rest several key players during that victory against Barnsley, and his team should be fresh for the Newcastle game.
An Injury Crisis for Bruce
The same cannot be said for the Magpies. Star striker Callum Wilson has been ruled out until mid-April after suffering a hamstring injury. Fabian Schar has damaged ligaments in his knee, Jamaal Lascelles is nursing a hamstring injury and Javier Manquillo has an ankle ligament issue, while Federico Fernandez still is recovering from COVID-19, plunging Newcastle into a defensive crisis. Meanwhile, midfielder Jeff Hendrick is suspended.
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce may have just 16 outfield players from which to choose. He said Fernandez and Lascelles are "touch and go," so if they do start, they will not be fully fit.
That is a pretty dire situation when preparing to face a very strong Chelsea team that has been swatting opponents aside with casual disdain in recent weeks.
Chelsea Likes to Dominate Possession
Newcastle lost 2-0 to Chelsea when the teams met at St James' Park earlier this season. Fernandez scored an own-goal in the first half and Tammy Abraham doubled Chelsea's advantage by firing in a second-half penalty shot.
Chelsea enjoyed 71 percent of the possession time and restricted Newcastle to just one shot on target in the entire match. The Blues have been even more dominant in possession since Tuchel took the reins. They had 72 percent against Burnley two weeks ago, and the Clarets recorded just one shot on goal - none on target - in that game.
Chelsea has secured dominant, if low-scoring, victories over Tottenham, Sheffield United and Barnsley since then, and it is highly likely to beat Newcastle on Monday.
The goals market is difficult to predict in this game. Chelsea has the attacking quality to score four or more against Newcastle's depleted defense. However, since Tuchel took over as manager, the Blues regularly have grabbed a narrow lead in their games and then simply controlled the match, without showing too much ambition to add to the advantage.
Chelsea has scored just 1.2 goals per game since Tuchel took over and conceded 0.2, so it seems risky to back Over 2.5 or 3.5 goals in this game. Chelsea to win to nil might be a better option, as Newcastle could be toothless in attack without Wilson up front.Comment
