I know it is odd to say, but Duke is a dead stick. Their best player, Jalen Johnson, just quit to prepare himself for the NBA draft. And sure, Duke had a predictable short-term bump after Johnson's departure, emotionally maxing out and blowing out a young, pretty weak Wake Forest team. But now they are facing a real, big boy opponent and reality is going to come crashing back down on this team. Duke just isn't very good. They have no experience and they just don't have the same caliber of talent that they have in recent years. This team doesn't play team defense at all and they really are not a great shooting team. Virginia does not have a load of physical talent. But they have experience and they have a great system that is set up to exploit Duke's exact weaknesses. Last Saturday we cashed in a 7-Unit Play on Virginia over North Carolina for exactly that reason: it was just a horrible matchup for the Tar Heels. It is the same thing here. Duke is still getting way too much credit from oddsmakers, analysts and bettors. The reality is that this is a 9-8 team that is not going to the NCAA Tournament. Their two best wins have come against Clemson and Notre Dame; hardly a murderer's row. And the only Top 25 team that the Blue Devils team has faced, Illinois back on Dec. 8, ran the Blue Devils off the court 83-68. Without fans Cameron Indoor is just not as intimidating of a place. The referees actually call the game straight and Duke loses all the built-in advantage they have enjoyed for decades. And even though the Blue Devils are having a down year they still have to take everyone's best shot. Opponents still get up for Duke. They still get up for a chance to play in Cameron Indoor. Virginia is coming off its worst game of the year, a 21-point blowout loss against a really good Florida State team. No real shame there. The Cavaliers have not lost back-to-back games all season and they are 15-2 following a loss over the last four years. Over the last eight years they are 39-8 following a loss. They bounce back. Virginia knows how it wants to play. The have a system, they have experienced players, and they know what they want to do. Seventeen games into the season and Duke is still searching for an identity. They aren't going to find it here.
