Game: (913) Toronto Blue Jays at (914) Boston Red Sox
        Date/Time: Apr 20 2021 7:10 PM EDT
        Betting Line Provider: Consensus Line
        Play Rating: 5 units
Play: Toronto Blue Jays -105 H Ryu (LHP), E Rodriguez (LHP) Must Start

Despite a 7-9 start I’m still very high on the Toronto Blue Jays and, since it’s the Jays offense that will make or break them this season, I think we are going to see better results from Toronto facing familiar pitching inside their own division. The Blue Jays went 22-18 against the AL East last season and, in their only divisional action so far of 2021, have taken four of six from the Yankees. The Jays hammered just about everything the Red Sox threw at them last season and have hit extremely well against the Red Sox for a couple years now. Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez sat out last season but had an ERA over 6 against Toronto in 2019. If there’s someone capable of cooling off a hot lineup it’s soft throwing southpaw Hyun-jin Ryu who somehow avoided pitching against the Red Sox last season which means no one in this Boston lineup has really seen him. The Red Sox have played great so far at 11-6 but Boston has played seven games against the Orioles and three against a Rays team that I don’t have highly rated this season. Boston is coming off a grueling four-game weekend series that included a doubleheader and an 11 AM first pitch yesterday, the Jays had a day off to regroup and I think this spot sets up nicely for Toronto to get a win that gets their season jump started with their ace on the mound here.
Toronto sends Hyun-Jin Ryu to the mound for the start here and over the past couple of years, Ryu has become one of my favorite starting pitchers in MLB. Ryu’s career ERA is 2.93 and career WHIP is 1.16, he’s never had a bad season and the reason he keeps getting better year in and year out is MLB hitters are becoming more concerned with hitting fastballs out of the ballpark and it plays right into the hands of what Ryu wants to do as a pitcher. Ryu isn’t a hard thrower but he hits his spots and in today’s MLB, where hitters are gearing up to swing with an uppercut at 99MPH, the fact Ryu takes something off and keeps the ball in a “pitchers” spot is maddening for the modern-day hitter. Ryu has been outstanding to start 2021 with a 1.89 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. Boston saw a bunch of hard throwers over the weekend, they haven’t seen Ryu since 2019 when Ryu tossed a seven-inning gem on this mound and I expect Ryu to have Red Sox hitters way off balance here.
Boston counters with Eduardo Rodriguez, he’s become the “ace” of this Red Sox pitching staff and is off to a solid start in 2021 but he’s yet to last more than five innings in a start and I don’t think he makes it past five against the Blue Jays here. Rodriguez missed the shortened 2020 season due to his battle with COVID, but the Jays saw him twice in 2019 and knocked him around for eight runs on nine hits in 11.1 innings pitched. The Jays hit a whopping five home runs off Rodriguez in those 11.1 innings and three of the four runs E-Rod has given up this year have come via the longball. Rodriguez is 2-0 in his first two starts but he’s done the bare minimum to get those wins so I think he’s a bit overrated entering play tonight. This Blue Jays lineup is built to hammer left-handed pitching and I’m going to back the Toronto offense to break out after a sluggish weekend in Kansas City here.

The Jays bullpen has been outstanding so far this season so once the offense catches up, I think we are going to see this Toronto team go on a tear and get to where they should be this far into the season. The Red Sox are absolutely better than advertised, but right now the Sox leads the league in batting average and runs scored and are second in OBP and Slugging and I just can’t see THIS Red Sox lineup keeping up that pace going forward. The Red Sox are 10th in the majors in team ERA and I know for a fact this Boston pitching staff won’t finish in the top half of the league in pitching this season. I think we are going to see some regression toward the mean on both sides with the Jays heating up to get back to and above .500 while the Red Sox likely struggle to play .500 baseball. It’s a good “sell” spot on the Red Sox and an incredible “buy low” spot on the Jays with Ryu and at slight plus money this has everything I look for to add the extra unit and step this up to a 5*.

NBA Top Play / 31-11 Hot Streak
Game: (519) Orlando Magic at (520) Atlanta Hawks

          PLAY: ORLANDO MAGIC +12.5
We're taking the Orlando Magic tonight plus the points to keep things tight against the Atlanta Hawks on the road.

          Breakdown
The Atlanta Hawks are in streak mode right now since interim coach Nate McMillan took over back in March, reeling off eight wins from their last ten games, and are well in the hunt for the Playoffs this year. But this is about line value and despite their recent success and Orlando's own issues since the Vucevic trade, getting double digits on the Magic here presents some compelling value tonight.
The Hawks are vastly over-performing right now, with Bogdanovic shooting 51.5% from outside the arc and Clint Capela on a nine-game run of doubles. That's simply unsustainable. Their three-point percentage as a team has jumped up by 4.2% also over their season average recently, and their fastbreak efficiency has jumped from a season average 25th in the league, to now 4th, which is a vast over-reach of where this team are normally at.
They were somewhat fortunate last time out too against the Pacers. They let a 20 point lead slip late in that one before recovering, and their overall metrics in that game were poor, giving up 33 assists to the Pacers (highest in the league), but masked that with solid three-point shooting to see out the game. Their other issue, or lack of, was turnovers in that game. Atlanta is giving up an average of 13.8 turnovers per game at home this season, 10th in the league, but against the Pacers, shaved that to just 10, 3rd best in the league. Everything is going right for the Hawks right now, but I don't believe that carries over to tonight.
Atlanta has New York on deck tomorrow night and Miami immediately after, two Playoff teams looking to move up on Atlanta sitting just ahead of them, so the Hawks have to prioritize those games over a struggling divisional rival in Orlando. But Orlando certainly won't, and we expect the best effort from the Magic tonight against their old rivals, and would not be at all surprised if they manage to win this one outright.
Take the Orlando Magic tonight plus the points against the Atlanta Hawks.
