Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Pick 4 Analysis-$25,000 Guaranteed Pool

    May 23, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Hawthorne Racecourse wraps-up the weekend with a 13-race card. The headliner from a betting standpoint is the 0.50 Late Pick 4 which begins in Race 10. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 10

1-Hillcrest Dynamite (5-1)-Should relish the company and was in deep water in its debut. Plus, that race was on a sloppy track and has never won on a wet surface (0-7). That said, the 0-17 record in '20-'21 is an issue but could get sucked around here.
3-Not Me Gram (9/2)-Stewart trains and he is usually the regular pilot but tonight Todd Warren takes the lines. Six-year-old is no stranger to Haw but like the rest of the field is camera shy. Spreading out in this race because the morning chalk doesn't seem trustworthy.
6-Ryans Ambassador (8/5)-Took the long way around in 1st local start of the year and didn't fold. This will be the 2nd start on Lasix and that might be a reason to use but will likely offer no value and is 0-18 in Stickney.
8-Hello Rooster (10-1)-Needed last and was also impeded. This 4-year-old is not as camera shy as the rest of this field and should offer a solid price in the 3rd start off the bench.

    Race 11

5-Ricky the Flash (12-1)-The 5-15 qualifier at Haw was better than it looked for what Ricky has shown in the past, banked barely $4,000 in 2020. Looking for a price, using and hoping Patton will put in play early on.
8-Mudville (5/2)-Three-year-old has looked really good in both starts this year. But now moves outside and has to deal with some older foes. Should be a player, will likely be bet and will also look to others with more value.
10-Peter Moe (7/2)-Leonard qualified this 4-year-old on 5-8 and is his choice over #6. This is the 1st start since 12-1 and should like the company. Has the gate speed to get a decent seat and has won 1 of 2 Haw starts.

    Race 12

7-Rollinwitdaponyzzz (2-1)-Won last versus this kind and now moves outside a few slots. Won't be 8-1 tonight but did show some heart in last. Difficult to look away as this is a suspect group. But this 3-year-old does show a couple of breaks.
8-Big Bobby Drock (7-1)-Miami Valley invader doesn't have an issue staying on stride there but broke at the start in
1st local start. Husted takes over tonight, that's a positive driver change and this is a softer spot. Will take a stab local connections have Bobby ready for a big try.

    Race 13

3-Frontier New Moon (5/2)-Leonard's choice over #6 makes 2nd Haw start after cashing a 3rd place check last week. The effort was better than the line reads, rolled the back half in 55.1. Looks like a major player and should be bet hard.
6-Peavine Delight (3-1)-Started slowly in last and came a big 2nd half to win in 1st lifetime start. If #3 leaves there could be an honest pace as some starting inside have a bit of gate speed. Could win right back if the trip is smooth and the fractions aren't soft.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

    1,3,6,8/5,8,10/7,8/3,6
    Total Bet=$24

      Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis/Wagering Strategies - 5/23/21

      May 23, 2021
Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “Daily Analysis and Wagering Strategies” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
      *
The selections are posted at 6:00 a.m. and updated later in the morning to reflect late scratches and changes (approximately 10:30 a.m.). For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

      *
Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

Click Here to View Today’s Santa Anita Workout Report

      RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B+
      Use: 1-Notre Dame; 2-Ian Glass

Forecast: Notre Dame looks like the controlling speed again and if he can duplicate his dirt form on grass he’ll probably win again. His one prior turf race was a disaster but he’s obviously a much better type since being gelded. Ian Glass is genuine, consistent, a two-time winner over the local lawn and quite popular at the claim box, most recently having been haltered by the Bay Area-based A. Mathis. He’s a fit on numbers and projects to draft in behind Notre Dame and then have dead aim and every chance from the top of the lane to the wire. We’ll prefer Notre Dame on top but include both in our rolling exotics.
      *
      *
RACE 2: Post: 1:35 PT Grade:
      Use: 2-Ikigai; 5-Bet On Mookie

Forecast: Ikigai is a precocious son of Bayern and can score at first asking based on his brief but noteworthy work pattern. The S. Callaghan-trained colt flashed good speed in a recent gate drill that should have him fit and ready. Bet On Mookie breezed a quarter mile in a quick 21 2/5 seconds at the OBS March sale and then brought $125,000 through the ring, a nice price for a son of the Florida-based stallion Uncaptured. His work tab at San Luis Rey Downs for P. Miller (solid with first-timers) looks promising, so we’re expecting a good effort from him first time out. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with preference on top to Ikigai.
      *
      *
      RACE 3: Post: 2:09 PT Grade: X
      Use: 3-Dancing Dana; 5-Agreetodisagree

Forecast: Agreetodisagree is a perfect one-for-one over the local turf course and just earned a career top speed figure when second while more than four lengths clear of the rest in a similar allowance sprint on dirt last month. She prefers to settle early and turn it on late and seems likely to produce the last run under F. Prat, who rides her back. Dancing Dana has the route-to-sprint angle that we like and should inherit a good stalking position and then have her chance to seal the deal. We’ll have tickets including both in our rolling exotics with preference on top to the logical favorite, Agreetodisagree.
      *
      *
      RACE 4: Post: 2:42 PT Grade: X
      Single: 3-Chollima

Forecast: Chollima rates top billing by default in a race that appears to be on loan from Los Alamitos. First or second in five of eight starts with a prior win over the local main track, she’s a first-off-the-claim play for an outfit that has poor stats with this angle but if she fires her best shot she should win. We can use her as a rolling exotic single, buy the race, or better yet simply sit it out.
      *
      *
      RACE 5: Post: 3:18 PT Grade: B
      Use: 3-Gregdar; 5-Rip City

Forecast: Gregdar finished second at this level last time out but may have found the 10-furlong trip slightly out of his reach. He shortens to as mile today and projects to enjoy an ideal pace-stalking trip in this five-runner affair that should be free of trouble. The P. D’Amato-trained colt also is reunited with “win” rider U. Rispoli and holds the edge in the speed figure department over main rival Rip City, a three-time winner over the Santa Anita turf course and listed as the 6/5 morning line favorite. The M. Puype-trained gelding is thoroughly genuine and consistent but is facing a tougher assignment today.
      *
      *
      RACE 6: Post: 3:50 PT Grade: B
      Use: 2-Next Revolt; 4-Leprino

Forecast: Next Revolt returns to his claim level and is reunited with “win rider” F. Prat, so there should be no excuses for the R. Hess, Jr.-trained gelding, who is exiting an infinitely tougher starter’s allowance sprint. In a shallow race for the level, the son of Revolutionary is listed as the 9/5 morning line favorite, but we suspect he’ll go lower. Leprino has won his last pair in good style but moves up another notch on the class ladder following a $12,500 claim by V. Brinkerhoff. A perfect two-for-two at this one mile trip, the lightly-raced former $750,000 yearling purchase should be on or near the lead throughout. Preference on top goes to Next Revolt but we’ll have tickets using both in our rolling exotics.
      *
      *
      RACE 7: Post: 4:20 PT Grade: B
      Use: 4-Hubris; 5-Hudson Ridge

Forecast: Hudson Ridge is a maiden but has improving speed figures, continues to train well, and should enjoy today’s nine furlong trip. The son of American Pharaoh lacks a true turn of foot but with an extra furlong to work with today we’re expecting the B. Baffert-trained colt to leave his previous form behind. Hubris couldn’t cope with subsequent stakes winner Du Jour when second in a hot allowance race in late March but he, too, should enjoy today’s mile and one-eighth journey while most likely stalking a modest early pace. He makes a major jockey switch to F. Prat and is rightly listed as the 9/5 morning line favorite. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with preference on top to Hudson Ridge.
      *
      *
      RACE 8: Post: 4:52 PT Grade: B
      Use: 2-Esagarare; 5-Reem

Forecast: Reem is the 8/5 favorite and based on pure form deserves to be, though she’s never been one to trust and has a history of waving the white flag under pressure from the furlong pole to the wire. Maybe today she’s finally found a field she can handle, but at 8/5 on the morning line there’s no real value to be found. A viable alternative – and one that should be included with Reem on your rolling exotic tickets – is Esagerare, a non-threatening fourth in a maiden claimer at Keeneland last fall in her only outing and making her California debut for a low profile but capable trainer. The daughter of Exaggerator has trained quite well since arriving in the West and could be a whole lot better than her debut indicates. At 12-1 on the morning line, she’s a “must use.”
      *
      *
      RACE 9: Post: 5:24 PT Grade: B+
      Single: 1-In Vronsky Style

Forecast: This Cal-bred maiden turf sprint actually came up stronger than par with the first-timers Patriot Missile (a filly) and Really Big News both showing enough in the morning to be considered contenders. Additionally, Minister Shane just missed by a head in a similar turf sprint last month and has worked very well since. That said, the 8/5 morning line favorite In Vronsky Style will be difficult to beat. The P. D’Amato-trained gelding couldn’t quite see out the mile when worn down late to wind up third last time out but has looked especially sharp in the morning since and turns back to a sprint, his preferred trip. With a clean break from the rail, the lightly-raced sophomore seems likely to capitalize on his role as the controlling speed. You may find the need to use the other contenders somewhere on your ticket, but the main push should go to In Vronsky Style.

Jerry Shottenkirk: My Late Pick 4 Ticket at Golden Gate

        May 23, 2021 | By Jerry Shottenkirk
The Late Pick 4 Sunday at Golden Gate Fields includes the $75,000 Alcatraz Stakes on the turf, and the mile race is a free-for-all.

The Alcatraz is the third leg of the Late Pick 4 and is carded as the eighth race on the nine-race card and is the biggest spread race in the sequence. The suggested Pick 4 ticket amounts to $72 this week.
Here’s a look at the those included on the ticket:

        Race 6 (6:50 p.m. ET, claiming)

GENTLEMAN’S SECRET was competitive at this level under his latest when he tired going a bit longer. Is back to a preferred distance and is a playable long shot.

HOT SOCKS was denied a third straight win last out but came up just a neck short. In good form and a big player.

SILVER CLAIM has been off for a year. Was second in a maiden special at Santa Anita and then won two 1,000-yard races at Los Alamitos. Class drop and layoff raise questions, but his good form cannot be overlooked.

JUNGLE BOY has won two straight and was claimed by Howey last out. Can press from the outside and figures well here.

        Race 7 (7:20 p.m. ET, maidens)

LESSONS OF AUTISM improved since moving up from Santa Anita. Finished well for second in his first one here and then was fourth going shorter. Can make a run vs. these.

ELUSIVE VIRTUE was close to the leader and faltered late in his debut. Eligible to improve in his second career start.

MR. STANG closed well for second in his only start and gets more ground here. Son of crack sprinter Atta Boy Roy can run on well here.

        Race 8 (7:50 p.m. ET, Alcatraz Stakes)

SEATTLE BOLD stepped up to stakes company last time and responded with a second. Gets blinkers and can be close throughout.

TOP EXECUTIVE won half of his four starts, including the King County at Emerald Downs. Was a sharp and emphatic winner in his first local start and can be a factor from the start.

IDA CLAIRE was a winner on turf two back and was fifth in the Cal Oaks. Takes on male rivals here but looks like she can get a good pace setup.

NONE ABOVE THE LAW beat state-breds in the Sllky Sullivan Stakes on the main track and ran against to company at southern California tracks. Big chance here.

STALKING SHADOW has put together three straight wins and four in his last six, including his latest in the Cal Derby last time out. Moves to turf and fits well.

TOP HARBOR was a stakes winner at Pleasanton last summer and more recently third in the Silky Sullivan. Capable of a solid closing move.

        Race 9 (8:20 p.m. ET, allowance)

CLEM LABINE was claimed by Tamayo last time and can handle this step up in class. Five-time winner usually runs well over the strip and can rally well in this spot.

APPRECIATED can secure a stalking trip just off a fast time, and a well-timed move and put him firmly in the hunt when it counts the most.

Golden Gate Fields Late Pick 4 on Sunday:
        6) #2 Gentleman’s Secret, #3 Hot Socks, #5 Silver Claim, #7 Jungle Boy.
        7) #1 Lessons of Autism, #4 Elusive Virtue, #8 Mr. Stang.
        8) #1 Seattle Bold, #5 Top Executive, #7 Ida Claire, #8 None Above the Law, #9 Stalking Shadow, #10 Top Harbor.
        9) #4 Clem Labine, #5 Appreciated.
        50-cent Golden Gate Fields Late Pick 4 (races 6-9): 2-3-5-7 with 1-4-8 with 1-5-7-8-9-10 with 4-5 ($72).

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Pimlico - Race #5
#5 Jammin Still He has some intriguing back turf form, and jock Karamanos so much better going long on the turf than his poor record at the meet suggests. Upset chance.
#7 Mr. d'Angelo Late runner has a claim on this one, but he leaves himself so much work to do late, and the price probably won't reflect the risk that he gets a tough trip while racing off the bench.
#6 You Are Awesome He might get the right kind of trip here, but he has more appeal underneath while meeting some horses who just seem better.
Race Summary Jammin Still was hit or miss on the lawn in the past, but he has a couple of turf wins, and he's probably overlooked from close range here.
          Pimlico - Race #7
#5 In a Hurry Meets a couple of players who want to be closer to the top, and she should be able to find a nice kind of spot in midpack to watch what unfolds ahead of him.
#4 Cat's Pajamas Graded stakes dropper has a right to be tough with these, and the layoff isn't a huge concern given her easy maiden win off the bench last year.
#8 War Canoe Versatile type should be in range throughout, and the hope here is that she'll improve off that dull run off the bench last out.
Race Summary In a Hurry might be able to score as the likely second choice in here, as her style should leave her in a great spot, and she is definitely capable of something better than she showed last out.
          Pimlico - Race #8
#6 Whiskey and You His ceiling may not be high enough to win this, but I can see him getting a dreamy trip while pressing a couple of speed players drawn further inside. Anything double digits would make this guy worth a swing in hopes the two speed horses knock heads and he gets the first-over trip.
#1 Always Sunshine He's pretty sharp when he's on his game, and he has a little bit of back class to him compared to the rest in here. Good to see that he still has some high-level form in him after the long layoff.
#4 Nottoway Speed will have a go for it and likely battle with the rail runner in the early stages, but this guy's form is typically all or nothing. If they let him get away early, look out.
Race Summary Whiskey and You is fast enough to stay in touch with Nottoway and maybe Always Sunshine in the early going, and his last two have been significantly better since adding blinkers. Big chance.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Santa Anita - Race #3
#4 Ensleys Dream Was a clear winner in her latest and has the speed to be in good position throughout; moving to the turf should not be a problem.
#5 Agreetodisagree Got a good trip last time and just missed from a length or two off the pace; was a big closing winner in her only turf start.
#2 Saturday Heist Cruised to an easy maiden win in her only start despite having only one opponent behind her early on; made a nice recovery and was a eye-catching finisher.
Race Summary Ensleys Dream has been on the improve and will be set up for a good closing move.
            Santa Anita - Race #5
#1 Proud Pedro Makes his first of the year after finishing in three Grade 2 races last year; was a winner the last time he was at this level.
#5 Rip City Was up in time in his latest and has won 5 of 11 starts; likely to be close from the beginning.
#3 Gregdar Was second throughout his latest and turns back from 1 1-4 miles; has won 3 of 7 and can mix it up with these.
Race Summary Proud Pedro makes his first since November and has been in much tougher spots than this; has a steady work pattern and looks ready for his return.
            Santa Anita - Race #7
#1 Airman Was up in time for a maiden win and has closed ground in most of his races; stretches out to 1 1-8 miles and should be tough to hold off.
#2 Sword Zorro Was up in time in the Singletary Stakes and is getting better with more distance.
#3 Jimmy Irish Just missed in the California Derby at Golden Gate and looks like he'll have the target on his back in this one; tough if he can back up the pace.
Race Summary Airman has the chance to improve in his first opportunity to race behind a mile; has a solid closing move.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 4 INTER MIAMI 6/1
                  # 5 COOL ARROW 10/1
                  # 2 WENT WEST 3/1
INTER MIAMI has a formidable shot to take this race. Overall, has one of the best earnings per start in dirt sprint contests in this bunch. Make a note that this horse runs with second time Lasix today. With a reliable ROI of +16 this trainer has shown formidable results with entries running at this distance and surface. COOL ARROW - The Lasix change (with second time Lasix) may spark a turnaround for this gelding. Ought to compete well in the early pace battle which bodes well with this group. WENT WEST - Sound average Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this racer a definite contender. Has been racing quite well in races of this distance, going 3 out of 7 under similar conditions.

                    Prairie Meadows - Race #6 - Post: 6:15pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 78

                    Rating:

                    #1 FOR THE HUSTLE (ML=8/1)
                    #6 THEBOYFROMJERSEY (ML=5/1)
                    #7 ONE STOP SHOP (ML=6/1)

FOR THE HUSTLE - I like the way this gelding's finish positions have gotten better with each start recently. A sign of a racer coming into top form. The rest of the field may trail this horse all the way around the track. Recent speed ratings show strong pattern of improvement. This gelding should be at the fitness peak, this far into his form cycle. THEBOYFROMJERSEY - Was in a $5,000 Claiming race at Prairie Meadows in the last race. That clash had a class rating of 83 and he is moving down in this race. A certain solid contender. This gelding should be at the peak of fitness, this far into his form cycle. ONE STOP SHOP - Looking at today's class figure, this racer is encountering an easier field than last out at Prairie Meadows. Traditional handicapping theory - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. Should run a big one here.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 MONDAY CONFESSION (ML=5/2), #2 WILLS DEFENCE (ML=3/1), #8 A J SAMURAI (ML=8/1),

MONDAY CONFESSION - Can't wager on this steed in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a short distance affair recently. Unlikely that this animal will finish better than he did last time when finishing fourth. Tough to bet on any thoroughbred like this that didn't finish in the money after the long turnout and comes right back. WILLS DEFENCE - The Equibase speed figures continue to fall, 72/50/26. Not a positive sign. A J SAMURAI - Finished sixth on May 14th after the very long layoff. Doubtful if there will be a reversal of fortune in this event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 FOR THE HUSTLE to win at post-time odds of 5/2 or better
                    EXACTA WAGERS: 1 with [6,7]

                    TRIFECTA WAGERS:
