Memorial Day Monday and the Yankees are back home absolutely reeling right now as they get set to host the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Tampa comes into this set in the Bronx having won their last 4 and a whopping 15 of their last 16. It is a streak that started when Rich Hill and Jameson Taillon matched pitches back on May 13th and the Rays walked away with a 9-1 win over the Yanks.

The Yankees meanwhile are losers of 3 in a row and 5 of their last 6 as they have been held to just 2 runs or less in 5 of those 6 games. The Yankees are also just 2-7 this year in the season series against the Rays and I have a feeling the way they are hitting - or should I say NOT hitting - is going to have them in a heap of trouble in this series, especially in today's series opener.

Go ahead and back the Rays to keep the Yanks cold spell going on Monday

    4* TAMPA BAY

My complimentary winner is this monstrous Game 7 in Canada to go over the posted 5 1/2 goals.

The Montreal Canadiens have shocked the Toronto Maple Leafs by winning Games 5 and 6, and have a chance to knock the much-higher seed from the postseason. This is an Original 6 rivalry, and what I can tell you is the Canadiens have one shot at winning this - a fast start.

The Leafs have dominated the series in the second and third periods. But Montreal has outscored Toronto, 4-1, in the first period. If the Canadiens want to take the crowd and Leafs out of the game early, and build their own energy, it starts at the opening puck.

Toronto has outscored Montreal 9-2 in the second period, so I expect many of the Leafs' goals to come in the middle stanza.

I know these teams have scored just 28 goals in the entire series, but one of two things will take place in this decisive game.

Either Montreal comes out strong and takes an early couple-goal lead, and forces Toronto to play catch up on offense. Or, the Leafs blow this thing up and take the total over by themselves.

Don't be surprised if it's 3-3 at the horn, and we see a third-straight overtime game.

      1* OVER Canadiens-Maple Leafs

NAVY ARMED GUARD could be the bet in here. Is a strong contender based on figures recorded recently under today's conditions. Solid try today now going off Lasix. Has very strong front speed and should fare very well against this group of animals. ZESTFUL - With a sound 101 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. Players ought to feel comfortable with this selection given Maldonado's recent profits at the window. HARMON - This gelding has been consistently running well in his latest outings. Should be given a shot in here if only for the very good speed figure put up in the last affair.

              Energy Downs 307 Racing - Race #2 - Post: 2:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $4,800 Class Rating: 45

              Rating:

              #4 TOP HAT HUSTLE (ML=8/1)
              #2 GRANDPA JACK (ML=7/2)

TOP HAT HUSTLE - This horse's last race was out at Arapahoe Park in a race with a class figure of 62. Dropping considerably in class figure today puts him in a solid position in this field. GRANDPA JACK - Lone speed horses can be tough to run down. Here's a lone speed freak facing sluggish sorts today. Ran in the last race against better company at Turf Paradise. The move down the class scale should suit him well.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #5 TOMBI (ML=2/1), #1 SHEZA MACHIAVELLI (ML=3/1), #6 CLEVER FRED (ML=4/1),

TOMBI - This morning-line favorite ran on Apr 30th and hasn't had a workout since then. SHEZA MACHIAVELLI - I find it hard to bet on any thoroughbred in a sprint contest at 3/1 when she hasn't shown any successful endeavors in sprints in the last couple of months. CLEVER FRED - The long vacation since August 2nd is somewhat alarming. Awfully hard to play this steed when he hasn't been showing any fighting spirit of late. When checking today's class rating, he will have to record a much better speed rating than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt sprint.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 TOP HAT HUSTLE is the play if we get odds of 5/2 or better

I've got to go with WHO'S THE DIVA NOW. Overall the speed figures of this horse look strong in this contest. This lot is much softer than the last one she was up against. ALEX'S BOURBON - Is a strong contender based on figures posted recently under today's conditions. Is tough not to consider based on speed figures which have been quite good - 70 avg - of late.

                    #4 CATES SWOOSH (ML=5/2)

SAMSON LEE - I think this gelding is very ready right now. I like the fact that Ballard brings him back to a race so quickly. I think that this race's shorter trip should help this gelding. CATES SWOOSH - Have to like the early speed on this one. No one else may even be close. After the contest aboard this horse on May 19th, the jockey is going to know the gelding much better. This gelding should be in fine condition, this far into his form cycle. Gelding has shown some pace. This shorter distance should be better for him.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 JOVIAL JOHN (ML=2/1), #7 TURNER ASHBY (ML=8/1), #2 GRITO DE PABLITO (ML=8/1),

JOVIAL JOHN - Earned his best speed fig last out, but the track conditions may have played a major role in the outcome. You should normally gamble against chalks that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last three weeks. The speed rating last out doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this thoroughbred as a questionable challenger. TURNER ASHBY - This gelding hasn't had any recent good results in sprint contests. I find it hard to invest in him in this race. GRITO DE PABLITO - Somewhat easily forgotten speed fig in the last race at Mountaineer Park at 5 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this less than sharp equine will improve too much in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #8 SAMSON LEE on the win end if we get at least 3/1 odds
                    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [4,8]

Jack's Free Pick Monday: Milwaukee Brewers -1.5 (-120)
We'll take the Brewers from a -280 favorite down to -120 here and back them on the Run Line today against the Detroit Tigers. The Brewers have won four straight coming in and have their ace on the mound this afternoon.
Corbin Burnes has been outstanding this season with a 2.33 ERA and 0.648 WHIP in eight starts with a whopping 74 K's and only two homers allowed in 46 1/3 innings. He'll be opposed by Tyler Alexander, who will be making his first start of the season for the Tigers.
Alexander is 3-7 with a 4.47 ERA and 1.364 WHIP in his three seasons in the big leagues. I just think this is a tough spot for the Tigers, who will be in letdown mode after a shocking sweep of the New York Yankees over the weekend.
The Brewers are 5-0 in their last five games vs. a team with a losing record. Milwaukee is 4-0 in its last four games vs. a left-handed starter. The Brewers are 5-1 in their last six home meetings with the Tigers. Bet the Brewers on the Run Line Monday.

I will take my chances with the Brewers on the -1.5 run line in Monday's home game against the Tigers. Milwaukee comes into this game fresh off a 3-game sweep of the Nationals. The Brewers have won 4 straight overall and are 7-2 in their last 9 games.
Today's game against Detroit has blowout written all over it. Tigers are sending out Tyler Alexander for his first start of 2021. He's been primarily used out of the bullpen and doesn't figure to pitch more than an inning or two before turning it over to an awful Detroit bullpen. Tigers' relievers own a 6.78 ERA and 1.718 WHIP on the road this season.
Milwaukee will send out Corbin Burnes, who is just 2-4, but owns a sensational 2.33 ERA and 0.648 WHIP in 8 starts this season. Burnes only start against Detroit came last September and he held the Tigers to 1 hit with 11 Ks in 7 shutout innings. Give me the Brewers -1.5 (-109)!

The Philadelphia Phillies are just 4-10 in their last 14 games overall. They are struggling to score runs as they have been held to 3 runs or fewer in nine of their last 11 games overall. They are without their best hitter in Bryce Harper right now which is a big reason for their struggles at the plate. Wade Miley is 2-1 with a 3.46 ERA in four previous starts against the Phillies. Miley is 2-2 with a 3.05 ERA in four home starts this season. Give me the Reds.
