Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park has a 15-race card scheduled with the first post at 6:00 EST. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11

1-Cougar Bait (7/5)-Was scratched sick on 5-11, then was claimed for $7,000 and now drops in for a $6,000 tag. This is a soft spot and it could be a wake-up call. But there might be some persistent issues attributing to the dull efforts since being scratched. Will use because of the drop and the post draw. The results should be better if gets the top without using much gas.
6-Bourbans Best (4-1)-Drops, fits well with this group plus makes 2nd start for the new barn and Merriman steers tonight. Could win by leaving and getting a pocket ride behind #1 or could come off cover and roll by down the lane.

Race 12

2-Feelin Western (3-1)-The Brown barn is batting over 26% the past 30 days and this 3-year-old was staked last year. The last 2 tries here have been on an-off track and is 0-3 on a wet surface. Should be in the mix if ready, but has been off since 5-9.
4-Imabeachboy (5-1)-Will toss last at this class from the 8-hole. Before that won 2 straight and now gets a positive driver change plus post relief and should offer a solid price.
5-Dubai Seelster (9/2)-Sportswriter 3-year-old races better near the top of the stack and has been stuck with post 7 in the last 2 starts. Draws well and Merriman takes the lines, so will look for an aggressive steer and to be there at the wire.

Race 13

2-Backseat Joker (2-1)-Beaten chalk left from the rail in last but couldn't get the top into a 26.3 opening quarter. Ended up in the 3-hole which made things very difficult. Wrenn got the 3-year-olds attention near the 3/4 pole but needed to go 3-wide around stalled cover. Did finish willingly to cash a 2nd place check. Will single here as the horse with probably the best gate speed starts from the 2nd tier. Should be bet hard again and can make amends with a more efficient trip.

Race 14

1-Downwyn Shark (3-1)-Raced big from post 6 in last and can close well. But this isn't the best post draw for this slow starter. That said, there could be a few leaving and the pace should be honest so will include. Did win 6 of 19 in 2021.
7-Maradona (12-1)-Beat this kind last week by over 6 lengths from the 3-hole going off at 13.80-1. Didn't get any respect at the windows as the program odds were 5-1. Has the gate speed to be well positioned throughout. Grinded it out 1st over and was strong to the wire. Loses Sugg as Myers steers, but is still worth a swing at the morning line price.
9-In Commando (9/5)-Makes the 2nd start for new connections and just missed at this class last week. This will be more difficult because of the post draw but best to not overlook. May need to take the long way around but has won before without having the lead coming into the stretch.

Parx Racing - Race #7

#4 Artistic Endeavor	He only passed some tiring ones in the layoff run last time out, but that was a seemingly useful turf debut and might set him up for something better in this second start off the bench.
#3 Know It Now	He has put together a couple good ones in a row, but now he's going to have to take that show around two turns on the turf. Pedigree says he should handle it, and a good trip from close range should be in store.
#6 Kidnapped	He gets Lasix for the first time while getting back on the grass, and he ran well with stakes company in one of those turf tries. Second off the layoff adds hope for improvement.
Race Summary	Artistic Endeavor is capable of something better this time around after the even run last out, and he may still offer a playable price with this group.

Parx Racing - Race #8

#8 Peyton Elizabeth	Forward player gets a good draw to prompt the splits today, and that was a good first start for the new barn last out. Should be there.
#1 Red Pepper Grill	She steps up off the claim, but she has some finishing ability in a race where several of them might be a bit suspect in the final yards.
#3 Flight to Shanghai	Tactical type should land a great trip, but she does tend to give away a bit of ground late, so she could be a bit dicey in the lane again with these.
Race Summary	Peyton Elizabeth has handled two-turn trips before, and she should get a great race flow to press the speed and move on the far turn.

Parx Racing - Race #9

#1 Caramel Cream	She's going to get a class test today, but she brings reliable form and some really good local one-turn efforts. The 6/1 ML price would seem appealing.
#3 Decoupage	She brings a string of underneath shares with similar, and her midpack style should leave her in the right spot to watch things unfold.
#5 Did I Stutter	Talk about a nibbler breaking through -- this filly was an 0-for-11 maiden who has now rattled off five in a row, and she should be in line for another perfect trip pressing the speed.
Race Summary	Caramel Cream is worth a mid-range price look on the rise, but she will have her work cut out for her with very logical players like Decoupage and Did I Stutter. Demand something like the ML price.

#2 SERIOUS MIKI	Took the money and ran to lifetime best time in local debut.
#4 YER SO BAD	Second to 14-1 upsetter two back under these conditions.
Race Summary	Make My Deo was anxious in the pocket, but got shuffled by the tiring leader and rallied too late on the inside. He is today's Best Bet and the key in a 5 with 2,4 with ALL trifecta.

Northfield Park - Race #1

#2 AWAY GOES ROSIE	Gets new pilot, price shot against vulnerable favorites.
#9 NOSEY NELLIE	One to beat despite second-tier starting spot, will be underlay.
#5 VICTORIOUS	Recovered quickly from break, backed up from good stalking spot.
Race Summary	Nosey Nellie starts from second tier and benefitted last week when the 7-2 pocket sitter broke stride. Victorious worked out a good trip after a troubled start but had no kick. Not much left to choose from, so go with Away Goes Rosie, who earned the best recent speed figure in the field two back, faded while first-over against Nosey Nellie last week and gets a new driver.

Northfield Park - Race #6

#2 WINCHESTER WALLEY	Useful seasonal debut, winless long time, lures Merriman.
#1 HUNTER AM	Rallied second-over to finish third, moves outside in, seeks sixth win of year.
#4 NATURAL GEM	Paced evenly after early break, gets Wrenn, use in gimmicks.
Race Summary	Winchester Walley chased fast middle splits before fading to last in his first start of the year. He is reunited with Merriman and worth a longshot stab to end a long winless drought in a weak field. Play a 1-2-4 exacta box.

#3 El Sobreviviente	Ran a solid second in his first over the strip this year after shipping in from Turfway; was placed first via DQ here last year and fits at the level.
#5 Keepin It Classy	Beat the top one in a gate-to-wire front-end performance last out and has won four of six over this track; always a threat here.
#6 Powell	Held on for second in a good sprint last out and has a good chance to make a strong late run with this pace in from of him.
Race Summary	El Sobreviviente just missed last out and can be expected to show some improvement in his comeback; can be a factor from the start.

Indiana Grand - Race #6

#2 Mr Manning	Ran third vs. similar in his first since August and usually runs very well here, especially vs. Indiana-breds; can be a player from the beginning.
#3 Jova	Was up in time in a good state-bred allowance in his first since November; usually comes up big vs. Indiana-breds.
#5 Chipofftheoldblock	Was an easy winner vs. N4L state-breds after a pair of second-place finishes at Oaklawn.
Race Summary	Mr Manning has the speed to get to the lead from an inside post and can be the one to catch; has dug in many times over this strip.

#3 Speightful Charge	Was runner-up at Keeneland last out and has what it takes to prevail in this spot.

Ought to come out very solid - I have liked the way this gelding has moved speedily to the front end recently. Posted a solid Equibase Speed Figure last time out. MAS MISCHIEF - Could beat this group given the 81 speed fig recorded in his last outing. Have to examine solely on class, with some of the top class figs of this field. BACOLI - Mosqueira will probably be able to get this gelding to break out early in this competition. This gelding obviously likes the distance, going 3 out of 15 in his races recently.

MY LITTLE JEN - This horse has recorded the best recent turf speed rating at the dist-surf. The horse with the top average class figure in turf events is usually a solid play. This horse fits the bill. This thoroughbred ran out of the money at Louisiana Downs in the last race on a muddy track. She should improve in this race on a non-sloppy track. When a campaigner drops at least five pounds (like this one is), you must take notice. It may not seem like much, but should make the difference. Beavin will try adding blinkers today in hopes of an improved performance. RUN NOW ESTELLA - This first time turf runner is going to give these thoroughbreds a run for their money. She came in third in her try on a sluggish track on December 3rd. Should like the turf. The May 21st affair at Evangeline Downs was at a class level of (72). Dropping down in class significantly, so she should be in a good spot. I like this filly. Has the highest EPS (earnings per start) in today's contest. TOP TEN DUCHESS - Has run good races in the first or second starts back off of a layoff. The ROI when Lozada and Thomas partner up is tremendous. Finished fourth at Louisiana Downs last out. Was close at the end and at odds of 4/1 in today's race, she looks like a possible contender.

GUILTY LADY - I think this morning-line favorite needs this race under her belt to start getting back into shape. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this bunch. GAL - Hard to keep following this sort of 'hanger' horse. This mare recorded a speed figure in her last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event.

This horse ranks at the top in this lot. Boasts reliable Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. STAY ALL NIGHT - Looks very strong for the conditions of this outing today, showing solid figs in dirt route races recently. Shows sound speed figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this field.

FICTIONAL - Aguilar should have her moving strong on the turn. The March 20th contest at Golden Gate Fields was at a class level of (74). Dropping down the ladder based on class a significant amount, so she should be in a good spot to take this race. TIME TO BEE QUICK - Really think this race horse is going to be very close at the wire.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 KID CAT (ML=9/5), #7 MS MICHELLE (ML=2/1),

KID CAT - This chalk horse ran on Apr 23rd and hasn't had a drill after that. MS MICHELLE - No picnic to wager on any less than sharp equine in a sprint event if she hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last 60 days. This filly hasn't been showing me anything in the last two outings.
