It's rare that you'll get the opportunity to back Max Scherzer as an underdog. We'll take advantage today and take him as a dog to the Philadelphia Phillies, who are just 5-11 in their last 16 games overall and banged up in their lineup right now.
Scherzer is 4-4 with a 2.34 ERA and 0.822 WHIP in 11 starts this season. He owns the Phillies, going 11-4 with a 2.50 ERA and 0.995 WHIP in 21 career starts against them.
He'll be opposed by Zack Wheeler, who is getting way too much respect from oddsmakers after his impressive start to the season. But Wheeler is 6-11 with a 4.41 ERA and 1.439 WHIP in 21 career starts against Washington. Bet the Nationals Friday.

Keep an eye on emerging superstar Juan Soto. He's coming on.
Soto is a factor, but there are other reasons why I like the Nationals as an underdog to the Phillies. The pitching matchup is Max Scherzer versus Zack Wheeler. I like Wheeler, who is 4-2 with a 2.52 ERA. But I like Scherzer better. The future Hall of Famer still is very good with a 2.34 ERA. He shouldn't have to deal with Bryce Harper and Didi Gregorius, both of whom are expected to be out due to injuries. Scherzer is 5-1 with a 2.63 ERA in eight career starts with the Nationals at Philadelphia. The Phillies blasted the Reds, 17-3, in their last game. That was back on Tuesday, though. The Phillies have been idle since so they could be a little rusty. Prior to that massacre of the Reds, the Phillies were averaging a puny 2.1 runs in their past six games.

This is a free play on MTL.
The Habs dominated Game 1 of this series, and much of the credit will go to Carey Price who stopped 27-of-30 shots. Price is the best goaltender in the world, and he did steal a few games in the series versus Toronto. A convincing win for Montreal was overshadowed by an injury to rookie Jake Evans, which resulted in a suspension for Mark Scheifele. The Jets could have a hard time replacing their leading scorer. The Jets are 0-6 in their last six playoff games as a favorite, while the Habs have won four straight as an underdog. I think the bookmakers have the wrong team favored here in Game 2.

The Set up
In hockey, rest is a good thing except when it is too much of a good thing. For Connor Hellebuyck, nine days rest became rust in the first period of the Habs/Jets series. Hellebuyck had a save percentage of .875 on Wednesday night. Average for the season was .916. Average for the playoffs to date, including Wednesday’s loss, was 921.
Here is a question. Is Carey Price at age 32 still the game-changer of past years? I would argue ‘not’. His save percentage for the season was .901. Save percentage last night was .900. Watching the highlights, he was very good, but there were pucks he would have got to in his prime.
As noted, the Jets are well rested. The Habs went a full seven game series with the Leafs, then straight into this series. The Jets scored three in a losing cause. Winnipeg is a very physical team; their big forwards are hard to play against and will wear Montreal down.

I see value with the UNDER 8 in Friday's series opener between the Rays and Rangers. Two impressive starters will take the mound in this one with Texas' Kyle Gibson and Tampa Bay's Josh Flemming.
The 33-year-old Gibson is having a career year, as he brings a 2.24 ERA and 1.011 WHIP thru 10 starts. You have to like him even more at home, where he's got a 0.69 ERA and 0.885 WHIP in 4 starts. Rays did just score 9 in their series finale at Yankees, but had scored 3 or fewer in each of their previous 3.
Flemming is a 25-year-old that has posted a 2.98 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 9 appearances (4 starts). He's been even better as a starter, posting a 1.69 ERA and 0.797 WHIP. He faces a Rangers offense that is in a major funk. Texas is averaging just 2.4 rungs/game in their last 7 and are hitting a pathetic .174 during this stretch. Give me the UNDER 8!

We won with the White Sox last night and I won't hesitate to go right back to the well with the same play here. Detroit will hand the ball to Spencer Turnbull, who already has a no-hitter to his credit this season. Turnbull could be in tough here, however, as he faces the White Sox for the third time since last August, having allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits and five walks over just seven innings in those previous two starts - both Tigers losses by a combined 14-2 margin. With Turnbull averaging less than six innings per start we should see plenty of a Tigers bullpen that while solid lately, has generally struggled on the road this season, posting a collective 6.22 ERA and 1.60 WHIP (entering last night's action). Veteran lefty Dallas Keuchel will counter for Chicago. His overall numbers aren't great. However, here he'll be facing a Tigers club that has struggled against southpaw starters to the tune of a collective .233 batting average, putting up just 3.6 runs per game. Note that Detroit is just 10-19 against A.L. Central opponents this season, entering last night's game hitting just .216 and averaging a paltry 3.2 runs per game against division opponents this season. The White Sox crown jewel has been their bullpen - which didn't allow a single run in three innings last night, and entered that game having posted a collective 0.50 ERA and 0.39 WHIP over their last seven games. The White Sox 'pen has thrived against division opponents this season, entering last night's action having recorded a 2.78 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with seven saves converted and only four blown on the season. Take Chicago (8*).

Jon Gray has struggled at 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in his last three starts for the Rockies. Colorado is 13-42 in its last 55 games against a team with a winning record. The A's are 49-22 in their last 71 games against a team with wins less than 40% of their games. Oakland is 6-0 in its last six games following an off day. Give me the A's.
