Jeff Siegel's National Prime Plays for 6/11/21

    June 11, 2021
Every Friday and Saturday handicapper Jeff Siegel offers his best wagering opportunity from a selected North American racetrack. These “Best Plays” can take the form of a win wager, exacta, trifecta, or a daily double, pick-3, pick-4 or pick-6. Selections are listed in chronological order.

    *

Belmont Park Race 6 - Post time: 3:34 ET
    6-Acushla (4-1)

Makes just her third career start in this state-bred maiden turf miler and it should be her best effort after a couple of troubled outings to begin her career. In her most recent race, the daughter of Tiznow failed to gain a favorable early position after breaking slowly and then raced wide throughout when looming a threat but losing her punch in the closing stages, eventually winding up fourth, beaten just two lengths. The J. Abreu-trained sophomore should be fitter and sharper today, and makes a pivotal jockey switch to J. Rosario, so at 4-1 on the morning line we’ll make her a play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.
    *

Santa Anita Race 2 - Post time: 1:37 PT
    4-Honor Among Men (5/2)

Showing up in a claimer after failing at 4/5 in a maiden special weight sprint up north in his first start since the summer of 2019, the 4-year-old son of Bayern obviously has issues but against this group the S. Callaghan-trained gelding should be capable of dominating from gate to wire. We like the blinkers off angle and the switch to F. Prat, so in a field without much speed the lightly-raced gelding he should have every chance to wire the field. There’s value in the win pool and in rolling exotic play at or near his morning line of 5/2.

      Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis/Wagering Strategies - 6/11/21

      June 11, 2021
Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “Daily Analysis and Wagering Strategies” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
      *
The selections are posted at 6:00 a.m. and updated later in the morning to reflect late scratches and changes (approximately 10:30 a.m.). For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

      RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B-
Use: 1-Flash of Genius; 6-Runningoutoflove; 7-Bet On Mookie

Forecast: Two-year-olds sprint five furlongs on turf in the Friday opener in a race that requires a spread in rolling exotic play. Bet On Mookie has the benefit of a prior run, a decent runner-up effort on dirt last month in what was a respectable race for the level. With War Front on the bottom side of his pedigree, the son of Uncaptured should have no issues with grass, so with any kind of forward move the P. Miller-trained colt should be tough to beat. The “other” Miller in the field, the debuting Flash of Genius, breezed a furlong in a rapid 10 seconds flat before bringing $67,000 through the ring at the OBS March Sale and shows a series of solid recent workouts at San Luis Rey Downs that should have him fit and ready. If he breaks running from the rail, the son of Flashback projects to be a major player every step of the way. Also worth including in rolling exotic play is the first-timer Runningoutoflove, a son of Acclamation and therefore bred to excel on grass. The B. Koriner-trained colt has done some good work in the a.m. and looks like a live item under top grass rider U. Rispoli.

      RACE 2: Post: 1:37 PT Grade: B
Use: 2-Silver Moon Road; 4-Honor Among Men

Forecast: Honor Among Men shows up in a claimer after failing at 4/5 in a maiden special weight sprint up north in his first start since the summer of 2019 and just his second overall outing. The 4-year-old son of Bayern obviously has issues but against this group the S. Callaghan-trained gelding should be capable of dominating from gate to wire. We like the blinkers off angle and the switch to F. Prat, so in a field without much speed he should have every chance to wire the field. Silver Moon Road, also vanning down from Golden Gate Fields, hit the board in both of his two prior outings and on pure numbers is strictly the one to beat. The T. Yakteen-trained 3-year-old has as good stalking style that works well at this extended sprint distance. Both should be used in rolling exotic play with the main push going to Honor Among Me.
      *
      *
      RACE 3: Post: 2:09 PT Grade: B-
Use: 1-Navy Queen; 6-Best of Show; 7-Maggie’s Magic

Forecast: This restricted (nw-2) $25,000 claiming turf sprint for fillies and mares is a treacherous affair in which nothing would surprise. We’ll use three and hope to survive and advance. Although she just broke her maiden in a two-turn main track miler, Best of Show might actually prove most effective as a late-running turf sprinter and gets a chance to verify that impression today. In a field loaded with suspect speed, the daughter of Honor Code figures to have every chance from the quarter pole to the wire to produce a winning late kick. She’s in light, shows improving speed figures, and likely has further improvement in her, so at 5-1 on the morning line we’ll put her on top. Navy Queen was overmatched when unplaced in a state-bred first-level allowance race last time out but is realistically spotted today and seems likely to bounce back with a good performance. She has a prior win over the local lawn and is reunited with J. Pyfer, who got good run out of her when second over the local lawn two races back. She’s the likely choice and one to beat. Maggie’s Magic, first off the claim for R. Hess, Jr., is a consistent type with steadily rising speed figures. If she can transfer her dirt form to grass, she’ll have a legitimate look.
      *
      *
      RACE 4: Post: 2:41 PT Grade: B
      Use: 1-Sir Flatter; 7-Gerlach’s

Forecast: Gerlach’s drops to his lowest level ever while stretching out for the first time and seems a solid top pick in this modest bottom-rung maiden claiming main track miler. The Grazen gelding is a fit on numbers, retains K. Desormeaux, and projects to draft into a comfortable second flight position outside and take control when ready. Sir Flatter lands the rail and seems certain to enjoy an ideal ground-saving, stalking trip. The P. Miller-trained gelding plummets in class to where his best makes him the one to fear most. These are the two we’ll be including in rolling exotic play with preference on top to Gerlach’s.
      *
      *
      RACE 5: Post: 3:17 PT Grade: X
      Use: 6-Storm the Bastille

Forecast: Storm the Bastille has little to beat in this $25,000 claiming turf miler and is listed as the 4/5 morning line favorite. The French-bred 5-year-old removes blinkers (one of our favorite angles) for new trainer P. Miller and makes a monumental jockey switch to F. Prat while dropping to his lowest level ever. Though winless in nine prior outings over the Santa Anita turf course, the French-bred veteran should be along in time in a race with enough early speed signed on to compliment his late-running style. You can use him as a no-value rolling exotic single or simply pass the race.
      *
      *
      RACE 6: Post: 3:50 PT Grade: B
      Single: 8-Nobu

Forecast: Nobu drops into a soft maiden claimer after failing to deliver the goods at 4/5 in a maiden special weight sprint at Golden Gate Fields in late April. Clearly, this former $140,000 2-year-old in training purchase is being culled from the stable but against this group she should be able to dominate from gate to wire with anything close to her best. We’re hoping J. Pyfer, who rides speed horses as well as anybody, can keep her together late because the daughter of Uncaptured must be considered somewhat suspect in the final furlong, even against this group. However, at or near her morning line of 5/2 the S. Callaghan-trained filly is worth a play in the win pool and as a rolling exotic single.
      *
      *
      RACE 7: Post: 4:24 PT Grade: B-
      Use: 2-Wyfire; 3-Swiss Swoo; 6-Harbored Memories

Forecast: Harbored Memories just graduated over this course and distance in good style with a strong speed figure, has trained well since, and can dictate his trip from his comfortable outside draw. He’s the logical morning line favorite at 9/5 and clearly the one to beat, but in a stronger than par first level allowance event we’ll include a couple of other major players in rolling exotic play. Wyfire adds Lasix while making his first start since narrowly missing in the Speakeasy S. over the local lawn last September. The talented 3-year-old shows a healthy series of workouts at San Luis Rey Downs top have him fit and ready off the bench, and with F. Prat taking the call for P. Miller, this first-time gelding appears the one to fear most. Swiss Swoo has done some useful work in the morning for a barn that always does well with European shippers. A winner of a maiden race over the all-weather surface at Dundalk during the winner, the Irish-bred gelding is bred for turf, gets Lasix, and projects to be forwardly placed throughout and have every chance to spring a mild surprise.
      *
      *
      RACE 8: Post: 4:54 PT Grade: B-
Use: 1-Head for Business; 4-Hello Handsome

Forecast: The morning line favorite at 9/5 in this maiden $50,000 claiming sprint for California-bred older horses is Active Account, a first-time starter with okay but not great workouts on his resume. At that price, he’s worth trying to beat with two others that may offer better wagering value. Head for Business makes the critical class drop from straight maiden to maiden claiming for a barn that has good stats with this angle, switches to the main track, removes blinkers, and should have enough early speed to take advantage of his inside draw. Hello Handsome does the same after just one start and he, too, should greatly appreciate the softer assignment. He’s trained fairly well on dirt, so at least in his case we’re not too concerned with the switch to the main track.

AI Longshots for Pimlico's $974K Rainbow 6 Carryover

          June 10, 2021 | By Jeremy Plonk
The single-ticket jackpot Rainbow 6 carryover has blossomed to $974,464 into Friday’s weekly return to racing at Pimlico. The largest carryover in Maryland racing history will eclipse seven figures when it’s unveiled on Races 3-8 on the card.

To take down the entire pool, you'll need some longshots to separate you from the pack. The 1/ST BET app's artificial intelligence selections for today's Rainbow 6 have pin-pointed some price players to consider.

          Race 4

#1 Backwoods Boogie // 12-1 morning line (30% top win projection in race)

Big step up in class after second-place finish over course and distance.

          #9 It’s Sizzling Time // 15-1 morning line (20% second-best win projection in race)
Speedster tries turf for the first time.

          Race 5

#5 Justice of War // 10-1 morning line (12% fourth-best win projection in race)

Obviously didn’t handle Charles Town oval in last, but back on track where was decent April 29.

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Evangeline Downs - Race #7
#2 Warriors Gem Willing to forgive the turf try last out, as he has never run well on the footing, and now he's getting some significant class relief while getting back on the main track. Danger to the entry.
#1/1A Broberg Entry Both halves of the entry bring competitive form, so respect this entry whether one or both of them head to post. Overbet.
#4 Park Ridge Benny That last one wasn't all bad for twice this price, and he is capable of the kind of race it might take to win this if he brings his best stuff.
Race Summary Warriors Gem might be the right one to try to beat the tough entry in here. His dirt form is competitive, and he should be able to bounce back on the drop after that dull turf try.
            Evangeline Downs - Race #8
#5 Commander Scott He has never tried the turf, but he's meeting a bunch that does not bring a whole lot of turf success to the table. There is a little bit of green in the pedigree, and he should appreciate the class relief.
#6 Venn He owns a little bit of pace and has run a couple of decent races on the turf, but he's almost always giving away some ground late in his races. Likely underlay may be vulnerable late.
#3 Unfathomed His only turf try was a no-show debut effort, but he's a much better fit with claiming company and is worth another look on the lawn.
Race Summary Commander Scott gets on the grass for the first time in a group that is 3-for-32 combined on the turf, and he might be able to wake up on the surface switch while getting out of allowance company.
            Evangeline Downs - Race #9
#2 Clever Arch There isn't much finishing ability signed on in here, and I wonder if this filly can hustle from this draw near the fence to find the front while dropping to this level for the first time.
#4 Audacious Girl She has had 11 chances and was no serious threat at 0.70-1 when dropping to this level for the first time, but her overall form still makes her the one to beat with this bad bunch.
#5 Rare One She was 3/2 on the board when losing the rider last out, and she's probably worth another look at this basement level before writing her off.
Race Summary Clever Arch and Rare One are the horses I'd use to try and beat Audacious Girl who might be overbet while getting short on excuses. Clever Arch drops for this and might have a go for the front at this short trip, while Rare One probably offers a better number than she did when dumping the rider last out.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #1
#8 POLAK A Speed offsets impost, enters 23 percent barn, seeks 58th win.
#7 SKYWAY BILLY Sat pocket trip, shuffled on turn, finished evenly as fave.
#1 ACE OF CLUBS Usually makes middle move, usually switches drivers.
Race Summary Polak A led to the stretch in his last four starts, winning twice in a photo finish and tiring twice as the odds-on favorite. He enters a sharp claim barn and has enough zip to overcome post 8. Play 8-1 and 8-7 exactas.
              The Meadows - Race #10
#2 PRIEST MAN Longshot stab off final turn rally, could return quick claim dividend.
#1 SARAH GATOR Mare controlled pace, came up short in bid for three wins in a row.
#6 COUNTRY PROPHET Rallied for a win, a second and a third in May.
Race Summary Priest Man re-unites with several familiar rivals from last week, when he rallied 3-wide on the final turn after the pace slowed. He finished a willing fourth and is worth a price shot off the claim. Play a 1-2-6 exacta box.
              Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #2
#2 DOING IT ALL Tries to pick up where she left off in her first season of racing.
#1 OH LINA Speed figures stack up well, rail helps, price attached.
#5 HARRY Held off the favorite with ease when he won last fall at Woodbine-Mohawk Park.
Race Summary Doing It All showed promise as a 2-year old (8/2-1-2, $48k) and shows a pair of decent qualifiers as racing returns to Canada. The filly held her own in fall sire stakes action and gets the call in here. Play a 1-2-5 exacta box.

                Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

                Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#1 Lahinch Always gives a solid effort when there's a fast pace in front of him; didn't get that last time but was closing well at the end of four previous starts this year.
#3 Til the End Stepped up in class and was outrun last time and is back to the level at which he won two back; can carve out a good trip.
#5 Kroy Loves to be on the front end and will do what he can to get in that spot early; just doesn't run many bad ones and it's always good to include him in the exotics.
Race Summary Kahinch packs a late punch and will get an ideal pace setup; one to hold off.
                Gulfstream Park - Race #5
#8 Eighty Seven North Ran an even third last time out and showed significant improvement in doing so; heading the right direction.
                # Courted Was on the board in four of his last five and was a maiden winner three back; can get a perfect trip here.
#4 First Gold Finished very well and was up in plenty of time in her first over this course; can be a factor in her first vs. winners.
Race Summary Eighty Seven North has enough speed to be in the mix and can dig in when challenged in this one.
                Gulfstream Park - Race #8
#6 Diamonds Enjoy Took command and was impressive for early stride of a 7 3-4-length win last out; takes a step up in class, but his fractions and final time last time were indictive of a horse that was well under his proper level. Can be a strong factor again.
#3 Karen's Cove Was an easy winner last out and can be close from the beginning; serious player.
#1 Honolulu Express Drops out of good races and makes his second off the claim by Zerpa; a factor from the get-go.
Race Summary Diamonds Enjoy might get overlooked on the board since he's in with some formidable class droppers and others that have run well at this level, but his last start was very strong and he's taken two of his last four. Should be taken very seriously.

                      # 4 TEXAS CROSSBOW 5/1
My choice in here is BLING'S BELLWETHER. Has performed strongly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 73 avg Equibase Speed Figure. Reason to like this gelding as he has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last 30 days. This conditioner has done solidly recently with entries racing at this distance and surface. HULEN - He has been running well and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this group of animals. Earning some good money in dirt sprint races. TEXAS CROSSBOW - Broberg has him trained admirably to break quickly out of the starting gate. He has a good opportunity in here as conditioner, Broberg, has solid win rate with horses going this distance.

                        Belmont Park - Race #9 - Post: 5:12pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $45,000 Class Rating: 74

                        Rating:

                        #9 TANNERS NECK LANE (ML=6/1)
                        #13 PORTFOLIO HEDGE (ML=8/5)

TANNERS NECK LANE - I know he'll be way back, but he's got a terrific move at the top of the stretch. With a big class drop in Equibase class figure points from his December 18th race at Aqueduct. Based on that key piece of info, I will give this horse the edge. Great average class rating on this horse. Should have the class to run well on the turf. A great handicapping angle is the addition of Lasix for the 1st time. Nevin gives it to this one for this event. PORTFOLIO HEDGE - Was in a Maiden Special race at Aqueduct last time around the track. That contest had a class figure of 87 and he is moving down in today's race. A certain contender. Brown has a very strong win pct in turf routes. This gelding should be in shape and ready to win. He has the topmost earnings per start (EPS). Check out this one.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #4 MASKED MARAUDER (ML=3/1), #14 REUNION TOUR (ML=4/1), #7 MAJESTIC SKY (ML=4/1),

MASKED MARAUDER - Just can't play any runner right back after he doesn't land in the money after any extended time off. REUNION TOUR - Hasn't been close at all of late. MAJESTIC SKY - Oddsmaker's morning line of 4/1 make this horse a pass by my approach.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - PORTFOLIO HEDGE - Put your stake on this horse. His last turf race figure is the best of the bunch.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #9 TANNERS NECK LANE is going to be the play if we are getting 7/5 or better

#2 Caumsett (9-2)-came off a 4 month layoff last out, fought for the lead but had to settle for third beaten just 2 lengths by a repeat winner. She needed that one and will be tough to catch today.

#6 Acushla (4-1)-rallied in her debut to finish 4th beaten just 3 ½ lengths then came off a 5 month layoff for her second start and rallied to again finish 4th this time beaten only 2 lengths. She gets a rider upgrade to 21% winning Rosario and that will help her chances.

#10 Kreesa La Wrote (3-1)-rallied to finish a neck in front of our second pick last out and should be right there again today.

#9 Epona’s Dream (6-1) came off a 2 month layoff last out and rallied to miss by less than a length. She needed that one and could help our payoffs.

                            Pimlico - Race #4 - Post: 2:09pm - Allowance - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $42,000 Class Rating: 91

                            Rating:

                            #8 FAIR CATCH (ML=6/1)
                            #9 IT'S SIZZLING TIME (ML=15/1)

FAIR CATCH - This horse may have too much power on the grass for the rest of the field. As they turn for home, he could put these away. I like the fact that this colt's last speed figure, 93, is tops in this field. IT'S SIZZLING TIME - I think Smith is making a good move here. This gelding can only profit from the shorter distance. A turf race, so bloodline is key. This one has one of the best grass sire stats in the field. This animal brings in a lot of cash per race. I believe he will boost the lifetime total right here.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #7 FORCED (ML=5/2), #3 BATTLEBUS (ML=7/2), #5 NOTHING BETTER (ML=7/2),

FORCED - I can't play this frequent non-winner. Gets the assignment completed from time to time. Hasn't been winning lately when made the morning-line favorite. Take a look at his record. BATTLEBUS - The speed rating last time out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class figure of today's contest. Mark this racer as a questionable contender. NOTHING BETTER - The fourth place finish in the last race coming after the long vacation is certainly not a positive signal. This gelding hasn't had any promising efforts in short distance events in the last couple of months.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #8 FAIR CATCH to win if you can get at least 3/2 odds

I think ARGUMENTATIVE is a very good choice. Is hard not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been solid - 69 avg - of late. Could beat this group of animals given the 80 Equibase Speed Fig earned in his last outing. Has run well when running a short race. SECRETLY LOVE - Looks to have a quite good class edge based on the recent company kept. She has been running admirably lately while recording very strong Equibase Speed Figs. SUITE ENCOUNTER - Looks very strong versus this group of horses and should be one of the leaders. Garnered a sound Equibase Speed Fig in the latest race. Can run another good one in this race.
