    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Parx Racing - Race #1
#7 Go Huskies He has been bringing some better form since adding blinkers, and he might like sitting close to a more leisurely route pace. Pedigree says yes, and it might be graduation day.
#5 Field Officer He's got a small bit of finishing ability in a race that doesn't have much of it, but this is his 33rd lifetime start, so he's pretty tough to trust on principle.
#4 Just Grande He was never really involved in the debut when going long on the turf, but he's bred to like the main track and can move forward on the class drop with a conditioning route race under his belt.
Race Summary Go Huskies and Field Officer look like the pair here, but the former has only had five chances and might like the way this route race unfolds, while the latter is out of excuses at what will likely be an unappealing price.
    Parx Racing - Race #7
#9 Grandpa Dominick He gets some class relief while making this second start off the layoff, and there is a chance the even comeback effort sets him up for something competitive at a square price.
#3 Couch Dreams His form has been somewhat hit or miss, but his best efforts have come with this kind of company. I get the feeling his price won't really be fair compared to his realistic chances of winning this race, but he's a win candidate either way.
#6 Duquesne He seems pretty realistically placed for this, and a fresh face goes a long way in a spot with multiple horses with more than 20 losses. Pedigree says the turf route will be fine.
Race Summary Grandpa Dominick should offer a fair price, but he has some room to move forward off what might have been a useful effort off the bench. A small step in the right direction would make him a player.
    Parx Racing - Race #9
#3 Valerie First She doesn't bring a very encouraging turf record with her to this, but she's one of the few finishers in this bunch and may be able to get past this bunch late.
#9 Boomerang Miss Her best game comes on the engine, and but there are a couple other players signed on in here who might want to be involved early, too. Vulnerable late?
#6 Midnight Sky She has never tried the turf, but this group is not full of horses with an overwhelming turf presence, so maybe this short route suits at a decent price.
Race Summary Valerie First has some finishing ability in a race that lacks it, and it has been some time since she was last on the turf, so maybe her solid recent form will transfer over today.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Hoosier Park - Race #1
#5 SHALL I FEAR ALL Should be in contention throughout if she stays on stride.
#7 SWANFUL GRACE Holds tactical advantage in pace-less race, but she's 0-11 this year.
#3 SPICE IT UP Second in last two tries at this level when she stayed flat.
Race Summary Shall I Fear All owns the best recent speed figure despite going off stride, followed by a useful try in a series finale. She is handled by a low-percentage provisional driver, but still believe she can handle this group.
      Hoosier Park - Race #7
#3 DRY CREEK STALKER Can run past these with favorable post switch.
#2 MEADOWBROOK NATE Unhurried in third, found rail opening in stretch, repeated by a nose.
#5 ALLOUTAFLIGHT Filly controlled easy pace, came up short at odds-on two starts ago.
Race Summary Dry Creek Stalker followed the rally of the winning favorite when second three starts ago, then made up 10 lengths in the final half mile in a series final last week when finishing out of the money. Play 3-2 and 3-5 exactas.
      Yonkers - Race #3
#2 ITALIA SEELSTER Can carry speed farther with better post and Brennan in bike.
#8 VIVA LA DEO Ran 1-2-3 the last three times she stayed flat, moves outside.
#4 NORTH COUNTRY Returns from Saratoga, should revert to close-up tactics.
Race Summary Italia Seelster worked to clear to the lead from post 9 on a sloppy track at Pocono Downs and offered no resistance when the winner swept by at the 3/4-mile mark. The 3-year-old can make better use of her speed in this spot with Brennan summoned to drive. Play a 2-4-8 exacta box.

        Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

        Indiana Grand - Race #2
#2 Purple Shirt Ran well late for third last out and can get a good pace in front of him; can score with a clean trip.
#1 Starspangledxpress Drew off to an easy score last time and steps up a notch; speed makes him a big player.
#3 Unbridled Victor Seeks his third straight win and is perfect for 2021; makes his first try around two turns.
Race Summary Purple Shirt will stalk plenty of speed horses that likely will come back to him; look for a big late move.
        Indiana Grand - Race #5
#3 Stop Hammertime Was along for fourth in the William Henry Harrison Stakes and it looks like he's ready to stretch out.
#4 S S Trooper Has good early energy and has been in some tough spots lately; fits well here.
#7 A Little Irradic Dug in and held on for the win last time and can probably carve out a good trip just off the lead.
Race Summary Stop Hammertime has acted like he's wanting more distance and gets his chance; has the talent to get it done.
        Indiana Grand - Race #6
#7 Moonshine Now Took command turning for home and drew off to a maiden score last time at Gulfstream; has the tactical speed to be wherever needed and can fight it out late.
#2 Jolting Joe Was along for second in his first attempt here; gets back on turf and can run on well vs. these.
#5 Amended Ran on well for second here last time has competed well in good races; should not be ignored.
Race Summary Moonshine Now broke his maiden at Gulfstream and should be able to excel in his first local start.

              Belterra Park - Race #1 - Post: 12:35pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,200 Class Rating: 80

              Rating:

              #2 DIXIE HIGHWAY (ML=5/2)

DIXIE HIGHWAY - A wise man taught me to wager on the lone speed horse. Take a look at this thoroughbred. Gelding has shown some pace. This shorter trip should be better for him. He has the top (EPS) earnings per start. Take a good look at this horse.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #3 PULL ME BACK (ML=2/1), #1 GREENSPAN (ML=7/2), #5 ATTHEPEARLYGATES (ML=4/1),

PULL ME BACK - This gelding finished off the board on March 19th and wasn't close to victory last out either. GREENSPAN - The finish of seventh in the last race shows me that this equine may be going off form. Don't believe this runner will make a winning move in today's event. That last rating was run-of-the-mill when compared with today's class figure. ATTHEPEARLYGATES - Generally I need a sprinter to have some recent success in short distance affairs in order to wager on him. Just cannot play this horse. Didn't show me anything last out or on Apr 12th. Should be difficult for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed fig. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class rating, so put him on the possibly overvalued equines list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - DIXIE HIGHWAY - One can deduce, given he finished out of the top three at Belterra Park last out, that this horse did not like the off track. I expect an improvement with better footing today.

                # 4 LOOK OUT JAYCE 15/1
SON OF DARKNESS looks very strong to best this field. Strong choice to take this race going in a dirt sprint. FORWARD MOTION - He looks respectable in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint. This gelding has been consistently running well in his latest outings. LOOK OUT JAYCE - The trainer wheels this entrant back soon to race again.

                  Race 2 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $9400 Class Rating: 74

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE DECEMBER 16. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $2,500

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 5 VALID THOR 9/5
                  # 1 VENDING MACHINE 4/1
                  # 2 LIPAN 5/1
I think VALID THOR is a very strong choice. He has solid class ratings, averaging 85, and has to be given consideration for this event. With one of the most respectable jockeys in terms of gains at the window, don't count this gelding out. Carreno has one of the strongest jockey ROI's on the grounds, returning to gamblers +23 percent. VENDING MACHINE - Looks quite good against this field and will probably be one of the early speedsters. Ought to be given consideration based on the solid Equibase Speed Figure recorded in the last competition. LIPAN - Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding. Will probably go to the front end and may never look back.

                    Mountaineer Park - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Maiden Special - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $16,500 Class Rating: 48

                    Rating:

                    #5 CROSSTHEBAY (ML=5/1)
#9 FOOL FOR THE CITY (ML=3/1)

CROSSTHEBAY - This front-runner should profit from today's shorter distance. The rider and handler combination have a beneficial return on investment when they partner up. The May 28th race at Charles Town was at a class level of (67). Dropping down the ladder based on class rating points drastically, so he should be in a good spot. FOOL FOR THE CITY - A racer coming back this promptly after a strong race is a good sign. Another way to identify class is earnings per race. This thoroughbred has the uppermost in the group. I think he'll be close at the finish line. Got some betting action in 1st race on May 19th at Mountaineer Park, but finished second. Has a shot in this race. This horse has to be one of the key horses in your betting. His trainer Baird excels in prepping horses to race on turf from the dirt.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 OUR GOLDEN BOY (ML=2/1), #7 BRAVE STRANGER (ML=9/2), #3 COCKY WINCHILL (ML=8/1),

OUR GOLDEN BOY - Should have at least hit the board in the last two months in a sprint contest to be worth the chance at low odds in a sprint. BRAVE STRANGER - Can't play this vulnerable equine in today's sprint of 5 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a sprint clash of late. This gelding hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last two efforts. COCKY WINCHILL - Had to show me lots more last time out. Never made much of an impact.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - FOOL FOR THE CITY - Horses trained by Baird have an excellent chance of winning in sprints on the turf. Look for this mount to make a good showing versus these ponies in this race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #5 CROSSTHEBAY on the win end if we get at least 7/5 odds
                    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [5,9]
