Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Woodbine Mohawk Park begins the week with a 10 race card. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 7, and that sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

1-Combs Hanover (3-1)-Left from this same post in last and broke 7th but that was not an issue. Went the long way around and raced wide to score a sharp win in the 1st start off the bench. Best to respect off a top effort and could be better tonight.
5-Toccoa Falls (8-1)-Comes off a nice qualifier with a 55.2 last half and should like the company. This is a camera shy 4-year-old and will need an honest pace. But JMac may find a decent seat from this post and is worth a swing at the morning line price.
8-I got The Looks (4-1)-Is only 1-12 at Wbsb but comes off a big try to cash a 2nd place check as the betting favorite. This post will add to the price and can come off cover like in last when he rolled the back half in 55.4.

Race 8

4-Behavenmyself (3-1)-Dialed it up last week in the 1st start off the bench and took a picture at 10-1. Won't be that price but fits with this crew. Will include and hope winning becomes a habit but is only 2-23 going back to 2020.
7-Vines To Heaven (5/2)-First start after the break was an even try versus better. Fits well with this kind and had success at this level in April. Should be a player at a short price.

Race 9

1-First Class Horse (4-1)-Nine-year old has made only 6 starts since 2020 but has banked over $500,000 in his career. Did race well on 6-15 but faded down the lane after a tough trip. Comes right back here, so will assume all systems are go and could have an even stronger effort tonight.
4-General Lee (7/2)-Makes 2nd start for the Johnson barn and was driven aggressively from the 9-hole after shipping back from Hoosier. It was a strong try and Roy should be able to work a smooth trip with this post draw.
6-Art Of Fire (10-1)-Got a start in at GrVr after the break and now drops into a good level and one of recent success. Has had only 3 Wbsb starts but has hit the board twice with one win.

Race 10

3-O Narutac Perfetto (9/2)-Raced in the Preferred Handicap class in the 1st race back and now drops to a spot to shine. Coulter should be able to work a nice trip and could offer a square price.
4-Only For Justice (7/2)-Won its qualifier on 6-11 and trotted a quick 55.3 back half. Is only 3-33 at Wbsb but usually faces tougher and should be in the mix with a decent trip if minds manners.
8-Memo (3-1)-Beat this kind last week and 4 from this field were part of that race. McNair has some gate speed to work with and looks like a real threat to take another trip to the winner's circle.

Parx Racing - Race #4

#3 Reigning Champion	He gets down to this level for the first time after a sort of modest effort last out, but he seems most likely to take advantage if the big dropper doesn't land this.
#7 Downtown Doc Brown	He may well win this, but he's plunging to the bottom out of maiden special weight company while making his first start since December. Doesn't seem good, right?
#5 Rickie's Melody	He stayed on well enough after chasing the pace last out, and he's in the mix here with a step forward in the second start off the break.
Race Summary	Reigning Champion would be playable at something like the 4/1 ML price, as he brings comparatively good form with him to the first start at this level.

Parx Racing - Race #7

#4 Hollywood Talent	Not many in here bring consistent turf form, but this guy has always been pretty good going short on the grass. He has dark form from a dirt try and a stakes try in his last two, so this spot might suit him well.
#6 Sevier	He brings form that makes him the one to beat, but he's not really bred to love turf and only tried it once to no avail. Overbet?
#1 American Talent	He might be able to line up a nice trip in the pocket, as he has some pace in a spot where there are some players who are definitely faster than he is early. Accept that and try to rate.
Race Summary	Hollywood Talent gets back to a reasonable spot after a couple of races that maybe shouldn't be held against him. Hoping the price stays playable due to the dull form.

Parx Racing - Race #9

#8 Celtic Treasure	Class riser is bred to be better on the grass than his 4:0-1-0 turf record says, but he's now trying the footing for Jamie Ness who has been on an absolute tear in the last month or so. Either surface threat.
#11 Uncle Andrew	He'll have to find a trip from this wide draw, but he might be tactical enough to get into a forward spot that helps him avoid losing too much ground. Seems capable.
#9 Mt Suribachi	His three turf tries have all been very good, and he's pretty interesting to me while bringing good positional pace to this second start off the layoff.
Race Summary	Celtic Treasure should be able to trip out from close range with these, and he's worth a look on the grass while running for the red-hot Ness barn.

Indiana Grand - Race #4

#7 Sunny One	Has just turf starts to her credit and was second in each; was runner-up here two back before winning an off-the-turf race at Belterra. In good form over her last four and has the fight to her.
#5 Choctaw Bingo	Has taken two straight over the Indiana Grand turf and will be favored to take a third; hasn't lost on the grass and will be right there throughout.
#2 Secret Mistress	Helped set the pace in a quick five-furlong turf race at Lone Star and should be on the front end; threat to steal.
Race Summary	Sunny One brings solid form into this one and figured well strategically; has been comfortable just off the pace and can get a good tracking run just off the leader.

Indiana Grand - Race #6

#2 Ekati Peace	Was competitive in strong turf maiden races before running to an easy win at Thistledown last out in her first for Kelly Ackerman; can mix it up from the outset and her class should show in this one.
#7 Fashion Icon	Was second here last out and was claimed by Holthus; bred to stretch out on the turf and can battle from the beginning.
#5 Elke Jaguarete	Has shown late interest in several races and can benefit from a good pace; one to watch in the stretch.
Race Summary	Ekati Peace broke her maiden at Thistledown but had been in tough races at Fair Grounds and Woodbine; serious threat to repeat.

Indiana Grand - Race #7

#1 Truculent	Won two straight at Oaklawn and most recently was fourth there; has performed well in good races and can get it done here.
#2 Beau Luminarie	Was third in the G3 Ben Ali in the slop last time and had six straight seconds before winning an optional claiming race at Turfway two back. Likely favorite and a big player.
#8 Ego	Was up in time in over this track last time out and has been a good claim by Holthus, who haltered him four races back.
Race Summary	Truculent has been in good form and can benefit from a ground-saving trip; can take the lead but also can drop back if the pace is too hot.

This animal earns a lot of cash per race. At the top in this affair. EASTER PRIDE - Shanyfelt has this filly entered in the perfect race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 HIDDEN PRIDE (ML=3/1), #3 GETOUTOFTHEHAREM (ML=5/1), #4 AMADEVIL (ML=6/1),

HIDDEN PRIDE - Hard to play any 1st timer when the sire has a win percent of only 4 pct. I think GINGER RULES is a respectable choice. Is difficult not to look at based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been formidable - 69 avg - of late. Garnered a formidable Equibase speed fig in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this contest. Must be given a shot given the class of races run lately. WHISKEY WEDNESDAY - Could best this group based on the speed figure - 76 - of his last effort. Has solid Equibase speed figs and has to be considered for a wager in this race. ALLEN'S ROCKET - He has a good opportunity for this event as conditioner, Chleborad, has strong win clip with horses going this distance. Earned a very good speed figure last time out.

My selection in this competition is STARBOARD LIST. Shows reliable speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this field. Jockey's recent return on investment figures make this horse a good wager. Will probably come out very strong - I have liked the way this horse has moved quickly to the front end recently. ALL ABOUT TIME - Looks decent to be on the front end at the first call. Had one of the top speed figures of this group in his last race. DUDLEY STUDLEY - Has been moving in the most competitive company of the field lately. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Howey have shown solid results lately.
