Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Pick 4 Analysis-$25,000 Guaranteed Pool

    June 27, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Hawthorne Racecourse has a 14 race card ready to roll tonight. The headliners are two and three-year-old Illinois breds taking part in the Night of Champion Series action. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 has a $25,000 guaranteed pool. The sequence will start in Race 11, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11

1-Ryans Ambassador (3-1)-This race is a real taffy pull. The lifetime starts for this field is 288 with a total of only 23 wins. So, a case can be made to stretch out and this guy has 4 of the wins. Ships back from HoP where he was in tough and started in the 2nd tier. Last race here on 6-6 was good, using but should be a short price.
2-Escape (30-1)-Improved in 2nd start at Haw and should be a price. Will take a swing as the driver change to Buford should help and this is the 3rd start back for the Trigg barn.
6-Shark Snare (7/2)-Went off as the betting favorite in last starting from post 10. Todd Warren steers again and he should work a better trip. Raced wide throughout the mile but kept pacing to the wire. Using and hoping the program odds hold true.
8-Beat the Devil (4-1)-Team Leonard 4-year-old comes out of the same race as #6. Also started outside and raced wide but passed horses down the lane. Figures to be in the hunt but like the one above is only 1-20 lifetime.

    Race 12

1-Fox Valley Eliza (9/2)-This is the 1st start for the Husted barn after Erv Miller qualified and raced this 2-year-old once at Haw. The chalk looks like the one to beat but has gait issues. Could get a fair price on this filly and should be forwardly placed throughout.
4-Asah Da Pacea (8-1)-There are reasons to dismiss, 0-13 and now steps-up. But the last start was the best so far, paced home in 57.2 and now Todd Warren takes a spin. Can't completely trust the chalk and this pilot is an improvement over the trainer so that should help.
5-Esther's Delight (9/5)-This looks like a winning spot if minds its manners and gets a decent steer. This is only a 6 horse field but this pilot doesn't drive often. This filly hasn't won in 5 starts, all in Stickney, and doesn't seem to pass foes down the lane. So there is cause for some doubt but has been facing better.

    Race 13

3-Fox Valley Kizzy (3-1)-Tried to get on the engine and not look back in the last start. That strategy worked 2 back but faded down the lane when bumped up to this class. This field doesn't appear as tough, so best to respect tonight.
4-Buffalo Heart (9/2)-Took the long way around from post 10 and couldn't catch the top 3 despite a 26.3 final quarter. Has missed a start but Stewart should have in striking range at the top of the stretch and the fractions could be more lively this time.
10-Illini Loretta (25-1)-This gal is worth a play at long odds and Bender taking the lines shouldn't hurt. There could be 2 or 3 looking to get on the point and if the fractions are lively Loretta should be rolling late.

    Race 14

7-Rock This Town (7/2)-Won twice this year versus top 3-year-olds. Then raced against stakes company at HoP and that was tall cotton. Back to a spot to shine and is 2-2 at Haw.
8-Fox Valley Sampson (6-1)-Went off at 6-1 at HoP in last and was knocked out with an interference break. But fits well with this crew and won 2 in a row here before the Hoosier start. Looks like a solid threat, has won 3 of 4 at Haw and will hope for a solid price. But does start outside for the 1st time and has had breaking issues in the past.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

    1,2,6,8/1,4,5/3,4,10/7,8
    Total Bet=$36

Jeff Siegel's National Prime Plays for 6/27/21

      June 27, 2021
Every Thursday through Sunday handicapper Jeff Siegel offers his best wagering opportunity from a selected North American racetrack. These “Best Plays” can take the form of a win wager, exacta, trifecta, or a daily double, pick-3, pick-4 or pick-6. Selections are listed in chronological order.

      *

Belmont Park Race 3 - Post time: 2:02 ET
      5-Galawai (5/2)

Four-year-old colt from France had just two runs overseas – landing in the frame in both – and makes his U.S. debut for trainer G. Motion in this 10-furlong inner turf maiden affair that came up noticeably light in quality. A good third to a next out winner at Chantilly when last seen more than a year ago, the son of Dubawi shows a steady series of workouts at Fair Hill that hopefully will have him tight enough, and as a first-time Lasix user over a distance he’s shown he can handle the Irish-bred colt seems well-placed for a major effort. At 5/2 on the morning line, he’s a strong play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.
      *
      *
Gulfstream Park Race 10 – Post time: 5:35 ET
      10-Free Data (8-1)

This second-time starter lacked early speed but found her best stride late and then galloped out strongly past the wire in her sprint debut in mid-May and seems certain to move forward with that bit of experience behind her. The daughter of War Front goes for a barn that has strong stats with second-timers and with the sprint-to-route angle, so with this stretch out to a mile following a healthy recent series of workouts the T. Proctor-trained filly may offer good value at 8-1 on the morning. In a soft field of maiden fillies and mares she may be worth a bit of a gamble.

Jerry Shottenkirk: My Late Pick 4 Ticket Sunday at Lone Star Park

        June 27, 2021 | By Jerry Shottenkirk
Lone Star Park’s card on Sunday will lure interest to Texas racing, especially for the Late Pick 4, which is an all-stakes affair.

Starting with the eighth race and ending with the 11th, the sequence has stakes that have drawn a lot of shippers to face locally proven commodities.

The suggested ticket this week totals $72, and here’s a look at the players:

Race 8 (6:21 p.m. ET, Grand Prairie Turf Sprint Stakes)

MY BOANERGES beat SHARE THE UPSIDE in a stakes race last time out and continues a nice surge under trainer Dallas Keen after the New Mexico-bred was off 1.5 years and came back to action in April. The stakes race came off the turf, but this one looks formidable on or off the turf.

SHARE THE UPSIDE was favored in the loss to MY BOANERGES and is perfect in two Lone Star turf attempts. Has been with some of the best sprinters in the vicinity and clearly is a big player.

ARCHIDUST, like Asmussen stablemate SHARE THE UPSIDE, won both Lone Star turf starts and is no stranger to stakes events. He won back-to-back stakes at Monmouth last summer and can apply some late pressure here.

Race 9 (6:53 p.m. ET, Wasted Tears Stakes)

CURLIN’S JOURNEY comes off a well-beaten third in a stakes race that came off the turf. Her last turf appearance produced an easy win.

VALENTINES DAY made an impressive move for second in a stakes race at Sam Houston. A clean trip could produce a victory.

ZAMZAM will probably be a long price but has won a couple over this course and can pick up a lot of pieces if the front runners falter.

TIZAHRA ran against tough company in Kentucky, Florida and New York, and despite not having won since last July is a solid threat in his first Lone Star appearance.

Race 10 (7:25 p.m. ET, Chicken Fried Stakes)

YES IT’S GINGER rarely runs a bad one and is usually there to either take the lead or apply pressure at once. Won two straight on Fair Grounds turf and should be a strong factor in this one.

UPTOWNBLINGITHOME has been impressive in allowance races and is a much better runner on turf, where she is three of five.

RAINTREE STARLET seeks her fourth straight win over her fourth straight different surface. She won two at Oaklawn, took a stakes win at Will Rogers and most recently won an allowance race at Lone Star in a race that was moved to the main track. She was 0-for-4 early on in turf races but can continue to be a solid contender.

A BIT OF BOTH has taken on some strong runners and won a stakes race at Gulfstream Park two races back. That one came off the turf, but she is two of five on grass and fits well.

        Race 11 (7:57 p.m. ET, Singletary Stakes)

ME AND MR. C steadily came down in his last four and his only 1 1-8-mile race produced a stakes win at Tampa. He’s better the farther he runs and gets a nice pace setup here.

DON’TASK DON’TTELL makes his first since November and comes off a year in which he won six straight, including four at Lone Star (three on turf). Won going 1 13-16th miles on the course. Tough to catch when he gets a lead.

ARTIE’S RUMOR was up in time at this distance and was claimed by Moquett at Churchill Downs in his latest. Has kept some good company through the years and has the talent to be in the hunt.

Lone Star Park Late Pick 4 on Sunday:
        8) #3 My Boanerges, #4 Share the Upside, #5 Archidust.
        9) #2 Curlin’s Journey, #3 Valentines Day, #5 Zamzam, #7 Tizahra.
        10) #3 Yes It’s Ginger, #4 Uptownblingithome, #6 Raintree Starlet, #7 A Bit of Both.
        11) #2 Me and Mr. C, #3 Don’task Don’ttell, #4 Artie’s Rumor.
Lone Star Park Late Pick Four (races 8-11): 3-4-5 with 2-3-5-7 with 3-4-6-7 with 2-3-4 ($72).

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Belmont - Race #1
#8 Mr. Vincent He gets Irad up for this comeback run, and he hasn't been on the good end of the race shape game in recent starts. Chance on the drop.
#1 Albie He has a right to be tough with this group while dropping out NY-bred allowance company, and he was a fairly easy winner the last time he tried a similar level.
#3 Auburn Hills He has been turning in improved efforts since running from off the pace a bit again, and he's a good fit at this kind of level while stepping up to his next condition.
Race Summary Mr. Vincent may offer a playable price despite solid connections, and he is capable of something better than he has shown in a couple of his recent tries.
          Belmont - Race #5
#4 Beautiful Lover Finished up with plenty of energy behind a top pair who were 1-2 the entire way, and she can probably sit a bit closer to more modest splits this time around. Look out late. Might be the right one to beat the Browns.
#2 Bacchanalia She has a little bit of positional pace at times and has been tough when racing outside of stakes company. She's probably and underlay for this team.
#6 Miss Teheran Just missed with similar last out, and she's like her stablemate with some pretty good running lines outside of stakes spots.
Race Summary Beautiful Lover would be playable at something like the 5/2 ML offering, and she is a really good alternative to a couple of talented Chad Brown runners.
          Belmont - Race #8
#6 He's No Lemon He has been doing his work going longer than this, but maybe the sharper trip will allow him to finish up a bit better with Rosario up, and he's as good as it gets with finishers. Better race flow at a price today?
#4 Breakpoint He's racing while unbeaten off the bench, and he's making his North American debut for a really tough barn with these kinds of imports.
#1 Olympico He has been a pretty reliable type with tougher stakes groups, so he's a good fit with these and can land a piece of this off the bench.
Race Summary He's No Lemon will get let go a bit on the tote, but he might get a bit fairer race shape today while cutting back, and I'll give him a chance to land this at a price.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Saratoga Harness - Race #8
#2 OH SO PINE Tries to bounce back from mishap in local debut.
#3 POWERSCORT Rallied for two seconds in last three starts at this level.
#7 MIAMI Won twice in May, dull as odds-on fave two back, exits fast heat.
Race Summary Oh So Pine was even money off a win at Northfield, but broke stride early. He fits the condition well and should make amends if he stays flat. Play 2-3 and 2-7 exactas.
            Yonkers - Race #2
#1 DANCE IT OUT Chased sharpies in non-winner of 3 spot, figures tough.
#6 THOR AND DR JONES Stands 8/3-2-1 this year, paced evenly but willingly against better.
#4 SHAKESPEARE Got caught by 28-1 shot after the race fave broke stride.
Race Summary Dance It Out chased the 3-to-5 winner and 7-5 runner-up through a :54.4 back half at Harrah's Philly. He gets a break in conditions and draws the rail, so let's make him today's Best Bet.
            Running Aces - Race #9
#3 SIN MACHQUEEN Regained winning stride in slow heat, taken to repeat on class hike.
#1 LIVINONTHEBEACH Up for third against better, moves inside, but 1-17 this year.
#5 RIDONKULOSO Held off several of same rivals with pocket trip, ran second.
Race Summary Sin Machqueen showed his class last week, brushing to the lead early and staying there through soft fractions for his 30th victory. He can revert to his normal off-the-pace tactics on the class rise and win again at a much better price. Play 3-1, 3-2 and 3-5 exactas.

              #7
              Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

              Gulfstream Park - Race #5
#9 Bonheur Price play in a race that features a lost of class droppers and fillies that want the lead. At 7.5 furlongs, this race is crying out for a late mover and this one looks like she could bring some late heat.
#7 Hot Babe Made a good late run for fourth last out in her first turf attempt; stretches out and can come running a these.
#2 Glitter Bay Takes a huge drop after setting the pace in races much stronger than this; hasn't wanted to finish her races lately, but maybe this change in claiming price will help.
Race Summary Bonheur will get a good pace in front of her and can make up ground on these.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #7
#2 Tony Small Rallied well for second vs. better and should be able to handle this level; ran well after shipping from Tampa and can continue that progress.
#3 Royal Squeeze Should always be considered here (11 of 31 at GP) and has been in tougher races; big player.
#5 High Heater Ran evenly last time and a slight class drop can put him in the mix.
Race Summary Tony Small was a sharp second last time and can get a good pace to chase; one to hold off.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #8
#4 Sunshine City Moves over from the turf course and has run some strong races on dirt; rates the edge here.
#6 La Chica Lateral Unbeaten in two starts, both at Tampa Bay Downs; was claimed last out by Joseph and looks like one to catch.
#7 Patrick's Lass Won three of her last four and took an allowance race last out; has the speed to be a threat throughout.
Race Summary Sunshine City has been with some strong company and should welcome the return to the main track.

                    # 6 ARCH REVENGE 2/1
                    # 11 TALK LESS 3/1
                    # 4 GREAT PLAN 7/2
I think ARCH REVENGE is a formidable choice. Has performed well lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 80 avg speed fig. Reason to like this gelding as he has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Will almost certainly go to the front end and should never look back. TALK LESS - Is a definite contender - given the 91 speed figure from his most recent race. Overall the Equibase speed figs of this equine look decent in this race. GREAT PLAN - Always tough to beat Bernardini and Oliveros working together, winning 25 percent of their races. Looks very good for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid numbers in turf sprint races as of late.

                      Monmouth Park - Race #5 - Post: 2:11pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $17,500 Class Rating: 76

                      Rating:

                      #7 CURLIN'S THRILL (ML=7/2)
                      #6 LE COSTE (ML=6/1)
                      #14 HASTY TOURIST (ML=4/1)

CURLIN'S THRILL - Comparing how the horses in this field have fared under similar conditions, I see this horse has the highest Equibase speed figure for the distance-surface. The October 3rd event at Woodbine was at a class level of (82). Dropping down the class ladder a significant amount, so he should be in a good position to win. The entrant with the top average Equibase class figure in turf events is usually a solid play. This thoroughbred fits the bill. LE COSTE - The May 23rd event at Gulfstream Park was at a class level of (89). Dropping down in class ranks considerably, so he should be in a good spot to take this race. Ran a nice speed rating of 81 on April 12th. Followed it up with another Equibase speed figure of 85. Either effort is good enough to take this race. A repeat performance from any of last 3 efforts, and this one should be in 'victory lane'. This gelding notched a good speed fig of 85 in his last affair. That speed fig should be strong enough to win in today's event. HASTY TOURIST - This trainer brings horses to the turf ready to win, winning over 20 pct of the time under similar conditions. Came home fast last out at Belmont Park. That type of move bodes well for his chances in this event.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #4 DRUM AND DRUMMER (ML=3/1), #3 REALTOR DANNY D (ML=6/1), #10 THE MORMON MAULER (ML=6/1),

DRUM AND DRUMMER - The lack of morning drills has to make one concerned despite the strong effort in the last contest. If today's race shapes up right, all the speed horses will force a ferocious pace battle early. Too bad this horse is one of those front runners. REALTOR DANNY D - It looks like too much early zip is signed up in this race. This speed merchant will probably get baked on the top end. THE MORMON MAULER - This gelding is always in the mix, but just doesn't get the job done. Tough to bet on him on the front end. More than enough efforts at Monmouth Park with no visits to the victory stand.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - HASTY TOURIST - Last time out of the box is deceiving, better than it looked. Will give a nice effort this time.

                        Gulfstream Park - Race #4 - Post: 2:22pm - Maiden Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $28,000 Class Rating: 66

                        Rating:

                        #4 LOVIN LIVIN (ML=8/1)

                        #7 MIZZEN (ML=3/1)

LOVIN LIVIN - I just may give this one a good chance. Should improve off last race where she did run off the board, but was within five lengths at the wire. I do like the fact this filly is back in a race so quickly. Look at this pattern of improvement. 42/50/55 are the last three speed ratings. ELUSIVE UNCAPTURED - This jockey/trainer duo has been producing a very positive ROI, right at +193. Faced tougher last time out at Gulfstream Park. Based on class figures, this is a weaker field, so I will put this animal on my list of top contenders. MIZZEN - Taking a trip to a lower class level; has the ability to make her presence felt. Gets help from Avila with the addition of Lasix.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #2 QUEEN STREET (ML=5/2), #1 CHECK TWICE (ML=4/1), #3 TIZOFADEAL (ML=6/1),

QUEEN STREET - This filly hasn't had any strong efforts in short distance contests in the last sixty days. This filly registered a speed rating in her last race which likely isn't good enough in today's race. CHECK TWICE - Hasn't been doing anything at all recently. TIZOFADEAL - This grass horse hasn't yet proven that she can run on the dirt. Should have at least hit the board in the last 60 days in a sprint event to be worth it at short odds in a sprint.

CORONA KEN has a competitive shot to take this race and is a very good value-based bet given the 10/1 line. Competitive gains have been scored by players following this sire's offspring in their first tries. Recently this conditioner has produced quite good dividends for bettors with this barn's first asking starters. Has to be considered given one of the strongest sires around. TS TRES MY DUST - First time starters out of Tres Seis have a sound ROI of +1. TS IF I WIN ALLFLASH - Expect a speed boost today from this animal going off blinkers. Will probably go to the front end and could never look back.
