The Boston Red Sox won the World Series in 2018 but missed the postseason in 2019 and then in 2020's pandemic-shortened season, went 24-36 to finished last in the AL East. Not much was expected of Boston entering 2021 and when the Red Sox opened the current season by getting swept in a three-game series at Fenway (outscored 18-5) by the sad-sack Orioles, Boston fans we thinking, "the season is already over." However, Boston immediately won NIINE in a row and the Red Sox have been in a 'fight' the entire first half with the defending AL Champs (TB Rays) for first-place in the AL East. The Red Sox ripped off 10 wins in 11 games from June 25 through July 5th but do enter this series off back-to-back losses to the LA Angels. However, the 54-34 Red Sox are currently tied with the Astros for the AL's best record and sit 2 1/2-games up on the Rays in the division.
The Philadelphia Phillies came into the current season having missed the playoffs the last NINE seasons, without a SINGLE winning season in that span. The Phils are a modest 42-43 as they open this three-game series at Fenway (All Star break begins Monday) but fortunately, they play in MLB's weakest division, the NL East. The 45-38 Mets are the ONLY team in the division with a winning record, so Philadelphia's sub-.500 still has them within four games of first place. There we be NO wild card berths coming out of the NL East this season (back to just two wild cards in the NL for 2021), so it's "first place or bust" for the Phillies in 2021.
The starting pitchers for Friday's series opener are Vince Velasquez (3-3, 4.50 ERA) of Philadelphia and Garrett Richards (4-5, 4.88 ERA) of Boston. This marks Velasquez's seventh season, the last six with the Phillies. He's made 148 career appearances (119 starts), going 31-38 with a 4.70 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. That pretty much mirrors what he's done in 2021, as he's made 17 appearances (13 starts) in going 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.34 WHIP. This marks his NINTH consecutive start but he's coming of one of his worst starts of the season. He surrendered five ERs, his second most in any start this season, while allowing a season-high nine hits, with three walks and four strikeouts over six innings of an 11-1 loss at San Diego last Sunday.
Garrett Richards spent his first eight season with the Angels, 2019 and 2020 with the Padres and 2021 is his first with Boston His 13-4 (2.61 ERA) season of 2014 is a long-forgotten occurrence. He's made 204 career appearances (145 starts) going 51-46 with a 3.75 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. It's been an up and down season for Richards, although after a stretch of four straight starts in which he allowed four or more runs, he lasted five-plus innings in allowing just two runs (Boston lost 7-6 in 12 innings but he kept them competitive).
Boston is sure hoping to close the first half of the season on a winning note and the Red Sox are 27-17 at Fenway, while the Phillies come to town 18-27 on the road. Then there is the fact that if these teams were in the same division, Boston would lead Philadelphia by 10 1/2-games. Neither starter can be counted on but Boston is clearly the better and is at home at a MORE than reasonable price. Enough said!

The Cincinnati Reds are 6-2 in their last eight games overall. They should not be underdogs to the Milwaukee Brewers tonight considering the Reds have the advantage on the mound and are playing well coming in.
Wade Miley is 6-4 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.155 WHIP in 15 starts this season for the Reds. He has been at his best on the road, going 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in seven starts away from home.
He'll be opposed by Eric Lauer, who is 3-3 with a 3.92 ERA and 1.331 WHIP in eight starts this season, including 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.375 WHIP in five home starts. Lauer is 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA in his last two starts against the Reds, allowing 10 earned runs in 8 innings.

I'll take my chances here with Cincinnati at basically even money in Friday's road game at Milwaukee. I just think with the way the Brewers are struggling offensively right now and how well the Reds are playing (won 6 of 7 going into Thursday), Cincinnati is in prime position to secure a win in this one.
Wade Miley will get the ball for the Reds and he's had a great 2021 season. While he's only 6-4, he has a very strong 3.06 ERA and 1.155 WHIP in 15 starts. Eric Lauer will start for the Brewers. He's pitched great in his last two outings, but both of those were great matchups for him (Rockies at home and at Pirates). I think we see him revert more to what we saw in his previous 6 starts. Even with that great outing against Colorado, he has a very poor 4.50 ERA and 1.375 WHIP in 5 home starts. Give me the Reds -104!
