    MLB All-Star Game

    Matt Severance

One of the more unusual current streaks in Major League Baseball is the American League having won seven straight All-Star Games. However, William Hill Sportsbook has opened the National League as the slight -111 favorite for Tuesday's game. That's probably only because the Senior Circuit will bat last at Colorado's Coors Field. The over-under is set at 10.5 runs. That's an unusually high total, but it's due to the thin air in Denver. Other books have it at 11.

Some of the sport's biggest stars will not be playing in the game due to injury, having pitched on Sunday or via personal choice. The NHL suspends players for one regular-season game when they decline to participate in its All-Star Game, but MLB does no such thing.

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom, the NL MVP and Cy Young Award betting favorite, would be a lock to start for the NL, but he's skipping it – his spot went to teammate Taijuan Walker. Arguably the two best everyday players in the sport, the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout and Atlanta's Ronald Acuna Jr. are hurt.

The Houston Astros had four players named to the game - second baseman Jose Altuve, shortstop Carlos Correa, outfielder Michael Brantley and reliever Ryan Pressly - but they are all sitting out. So even though each team is supposed to have at least one All-Star representative, Houston now will have none. For what it's worth, this is the first All-Star Game since Houston's cheating scandal came to light. There wasn't a Midsummer Classic in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The previous time Coors Field hosted the contest was in 1998, when the American League won 13-8. Baltimore Orioles second baseman Roberto Alomar was the MVP. The National League's last victory was an 8-0 triumph in 2012 at Kansas City.

The managers for the teams are the managers of the clubs that reached the World Series the previous season. That means Tampa Bay's Kevin Cash leads the AL and Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers guides the NL.

    Pick: National League (-111)

Not a huge rhyme or reason to this pick, but the Senior Circuit is simply overdue – plus, it does get to bat last. Even without the likes of deGrom, Acuna, Mookie Betts and others, it looks like it has a deeper roster overall. There's also the fact that every NL player is familiar with Coors Field, while some AL players may not be. Sometimes, it's the little things. My early pick for MVP: San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Naming the MVP for the All-Star Game is a popularity contest, and he's one of the faces of MLB.

    Pick: Under 10.5

Even with the altitude, that's a really high total when one considers that pitchers will only go an inning or two. The NL can trot out the likes of Walker Buehler, Max Scherzer, Craig Kimbrel and Josh Hader. Good luck scoring against that quartet. The AL has Gerrit Cole, Aroldis Chapman, Shohei Ohtani (who also is the starting DH) and Carlos Rodon. Since 2010, only one All-Star Game has had more than 10.5 runs scored.
