Seems very easy to want to just back Chelsea here. They have had a good preseason with wins over Bournemouth and Arsenal along with a a 2-2 draw against Tottenham while Villarreal are winless in six preseason games including losses to Valencia, Marseille and Leicester.
Villarreal are without defender Pau Torres in this match who represented Spain in the Olympics and their winger Samuel Chukwueze remains sidelined with a hip injury, while apparently there was also a COVID scare in the clubhouse which seems like a big factor.
Villarreal asked for the Super Cup to be moved back to allow for proper training but were not granted their request. Emery has barely been able to run a regular practice with the entire team being able to participate.
Chelsea won’t be at full strength for this game either with Mason Mount, Thiago Silva, Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Jorginho all unlikely to play as none of they have played in any of their friendlies so far.
There apparently is still hope that Romelu Lukaku could play in this game if he is able to get signed onto Chelsea by 11pm ET on Tuesday night.
Regardless, Chelsea proved last year just how deep they are as they had to navigate the UCL schedule along with trying to secure a Top 4 spot in the EPL and being able to field squads in both competitions as they couldn’t afford to rest anyone. I think that depth will prove too much here and see Chelsea as the play in this game while the Under 2.25 also looks appealing.
