Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    September 17, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
The headliners on the 14-race card at Hoosier Park are two-and three-year-old colts and geldings battling in Indiana Sires Stakes action. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and that sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11

3-Brookview Bullet (6-1)-Burke trainee gets the services of Widger tonight and he has taken 2 pictures this year with this 3-year-old. Faded after being used hard from the 8 hole in last but was off 2 weeks before that start.
7-Rogers Image (2-1)-Rogers 4 race win streak came to a halt in last but the trip wasn't the best and only missed by a little more than a length. Winner of 6 of 23 at HoP and 5 of 15 this year should be in the hunt. Has won 4 of 6 since starting Lasix.
10-T's Raider II (4-1)-Has shown the ability to win from post 10 but needs a big try to take a picture at this level. The price should be fair, plus #1 and #2 do have some gate speed so Tetrick could work a trip and get a decent seat off the gate.

    Race 12

3-Big Law (8/5)-Two race win streak was snapped in last when this gelding ran into a 149.2 winner and finished 2nd. Still raced in 150.3 with a 26.4 last quarter and will be tough to beat if dialed on high.
8-The Longest Yard (8-1)-Broke very slowly in last and had no chance being 16 lengths behind at the half. With an alert start Oosting should have this Erv Miller pupil close to the lead turning for the wire. Was beaten by #3 on 8-27 by only 1 1/4 lengths over a sloppy track. This barn has posted 23% winners over the past 30 days and the price should be right to use.

    Race 13

3-Family Recipe (8/5)-Team Miller entry has been cashing checks versus better and now drops to a spot to shine. This will be the 2nd start off the bench and could wire this crew with a top effort.

    Race 14

2-Nick's Monster (5-1)-With this post draw Nick has a punchers chance and did roll home in 53.4 in last. Krueger could get a close-up seat and be in striking range down the lane. Might be a trip out winner at a solid price.
4-Ike's Panther (8/5)-Come off a rough trip and the last 2 starts have been versus tough foes. Tetrick will be in the bike and that's a plus. Should enjoy the company and looks like the main player.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

Jeff Siegel's National Prime Plays for 9/17/21

      September 17, 2021

Belmont Park – Race 4. Post time: 2:34 ET
      1 – Miss You Ella (3-1)

The known element doesn’t inspire in this maiden turf mile for juveniles so let’s go with a nicely-bred first-timer with a series of solid works for a high percentage trainer-jockey team. This daughter of Declaration of War has trained like she’s plenty fit for a major effort first crack out of the box, and this C. Brown-trained filly should have every chance from her favorable rail draw to show her best stuff. With I. Ortiz, Jr. in the saddle, she looks like a live item at 3-1 on the morning line.

Belmont Park – Race 7. Post time: 4:12 ET
      6 – Big Everest (7/2)

Lightly-raced sophomore is Improving with each outing and was quite sharp in victory when graduating over a mile on turf at Saratoga last time out. The English-bred colt displayed an exciting late turn of foot to win going away, and though stepping into stakes company today seems likely to settle early and blast home late over a sprint distance that should complement his style. Regular pilot J. Rosario stays aboard, so at 7/2 on the morning line the C. Clement-trained colt should offer excellent wagering value.

Belmont Park – Race 8. Post time: 4:44 ET
      5 - Caldee (4-1)

Three-year-old daughter of More Than Ready ran quite well in a pair of out-of-town stakes races, finishing second in the Christiana S. at Delaware Park in July and then most recently winding up a close second in the in the Preview Dueling Grounds Oaks S. at Ellis Park last month. The B. Cox-trained filly has been routing most of her career but should greatly appreciate this shortening to six furlongs, especially in a field that lacks her kind of early speed. With aggressive handling from M. Franco, she could take control early and never look back, so at 4-1 on the morning line we’ll make her a win play and rolling exotic single.

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Charles Town - Race #6
#5 Test Me I Dare U She's a logical alternative to the likely chalk drawn outside of her, and she has some back races that would be competitive here if she were able to take a nice step forward in this third start off the break. Price should be better tonight.
#6 Eye of the Needle She is listed at 1/5 on the morning line, and she's almost certain to take a ton of cash in a bad race. That said, she has come up short with fading efforts in her two local tries -- one at even money, and last out at 1/5 in a race where she earned just a 60 BRIS Late Pace figure. Vulnerable late?
#1 Taptap She was only a neck behind Eye of the Needle when they met last time out, so we know she's a decent enough fit with her best stuff. Still, this will be her 15th career start, so there isn't any real upside here.
Race Summary Test Me I Dare U has come back with two really dull races to start her 3yo campaign, but she'll go third off the layoff in a race without much serious quality.
        Charles Town - Race #7
#7 Tweet This I don't fully trust him to class up with these on the hike, but he has been super sharp since moving back around two turns, and he figures for a great trip tracking a couple of speedier types.
#5 Remys Showtime He's the one to beat in this spot, but he's kind of all or nothing on the engine and doesn't have any real heart when he gets passed. Wouldn't want to be here at any kind of short price.
#1 Morgan County He owns a couple of two-turn races that stack up well with this group, but he's stretching out with just enough pace to make for a potentially tricky trip from the fence.
Race Summary Tweet This steps up off a couple of serious scores at similar trips, and he should be able to land a perfect spy and pounce trip from the wide draw. Something like the 5/2 ML price would seem fair.
        Charles Town - Race #8
#3 Ferocious Storm He has a bit of sprint pace while dropping to the lowest level of his career in this 10th start, and there's a real chance he gets brave with the locals.
#2 Appeal to Respond He's probably good enough to win this while dropping hard from a Tampa MSW spot to this basement maiden claimer while adding Lasix, but it feels like he's going to get overbet compared to his realistic win chances.
#1 Richie's B L He's had 16 chances, but he turned in a pretty decent effort in the first start for the Pickett barn, and something similar should keep him in the mix for a piece of this.
Race Summary Ferocious Storm and Appeal to Respond both bring decent class drops to this cheap spot, but the hope is Appeal to Respond will get a bit overbet and leave Ferocious Storm at small, but playable, price.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Freehold - Race #2
#5 TOUGH LITTLE BEACH No factor against top two faves at Harrah's Philadelphia and Pocono, fits better with these.
#3 SKYLINE HANOVER Ginsburg's choice of three favorites despite horse's 1-31 record.
#4 NEVER NOT DANCING Hit board in three straight, including an odds-on appearance locally.
Race Summary Tough Little Beach looms a forward factor at a good price. He raced in a tougher condition three starts ago, was passed by the two favorites in his follow-up try and couldn't keep pace with the odds-on winner last out. Play 5-3 and 5-4 exactas.
          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #5
#5 WESTBEACH Exits fast race, gets class relief, changes pilots.
#1 THIS DRAGON ROCKS Good fit at this level, post switch could make winning difference.
#7 JIMBELINA Drops, starts fresh, looks to get back on the winning track.
Race Summary Westbeach paced evenly through a :54.1 back half last week. She was in good form prior, has good tactical speed and takes a magnified class drop against mostly unproven rivals at this level. Play a 5-ALL exacta.
          Meadowlands - Race #5
#4 SIMON Took money, sent hard, went off stride, some recovery.
#1 ROBERTSIN Ran second in fast division of Kindergarten series.
#2 SLAVE LABOUR Steady improvement, favorable post, good price.
Race Summary Simon broke stride while clearing to the lead into the first turn, recovered to be within striking distance at the top of the stretch and faded. He deserves another chance with a better starting spot. Play 4/1,2/ALL trifecta.

            Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

            Gulfstream Park - Race #5
#3 Glory of Florida Ran a perfect race from off the pace and was moving off at the end; does his best when he lets other do the hard work early.
#1 Cool Arrow Ran a solid second last time and the veteran has a lot of races on his form that would make him very tough here.
#4 Eye of a Jedi Won the G3 Ghostzapper here in March and has been off since then; has a big class advantage but the time off could be the equalizer.
Race Summary Glory of Florida comes off his best race in quite some time and relaxed nicely last out; can save ground from just off the pace and can steadily make up ground.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #8
#2 Nacho Papa Ran to a two-length win last out and was claimed by Avila; has changed back in each of his last five races and continues well run well from wherever he's stabled.
#5 Trappezoid Won three of his last five and was second in the other two; will be in close attendance from the start and will put up a fight.
#7 Brasstown Loves being on the front end and he goes for his third straight win; beat some of the same horses last time.
Race Summary Nacho Papa has the tactical speed and will carve out a good trip just off a solid pace; will be tough to hold off late.
            Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#2 Hot Babe Moves back to the main track and drops out of stronger races; won two straight at this level in early summer.
#6 Pretty Rachel Goes for her fifth straight win and was claimed last out by De La Cerda; keeps rider Meneses.
#1 I'm a Coco Pebbles Has won three of her last six and was second in her last two; does well at this level.
Race Summary Hot Babe has done very well at this level and is back after running in tougher spots; can be in the mix from the outset and her class can help her wear down her rivals.

                  Race 3 - Maiden - 3.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $3800 Class Rating: 63

QUARTER HORSE 3F, FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 5 TEEWISTED (T) 9/5
                  # 2 SECRET AGENT GAL (T) 5/2
                  # 4 CHEROKEES RETURN 2/1
I've got to go with TEEWISTED (T). Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a good angle. This one ranks at the top in this bunch. SECRET AGENT GAL (T) - Very good try today now going off Lasix. CHEROKEES RETURN - Has been running soundly lately and will most likely be on the front end early on.

                    # 8 DF FABULOUS ACE 4/1
                    # 7 EAGLES DRAGON 9/2
                    # 11 DONT GET NO BETTA 15/1
I've got to go with DF FABULOUS ACE. Will almost certainly compete soundly in the early speed clash which bodes well with this field. Posted a reliable speed rating in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this affair. If you look closely, this one has some longshot possibilities. EAGLES DRAGON - With a solid 75 average Equibase speed fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. DONT GET NO BETTA - Looks very good to be on the front end at the first call. With a very good 83 Equibase speed fig last time out, will definitely be a factor in this contest.

                      Prairie Meadows - Race #5 - Post: 7:42pm - Maiden Special - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $30,500 Class Rating: 70

                      Rating:

                      #2 WHEREVER HE IS (ML=7/2)

WHEREVER HE IS - Jock jumped on this colt's back for the first time on Sep 4th. Should be in tune with the horse even better this time. I like to bet on this angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a solid race within the last 30 days.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #1 BEER CHASER (ML=8/5), #4 BUBBA'S QUEST (ML=3/1), #5 CHICAGO CHROME (ML=4/1),

BEER CHASER - This pony didn't do much for me last time out of the box finishing third. No reason to expect improvement today. BUBBA'S QUEST - Doesn't look to be worth 3/1 in today's event. Pass on him this time. CHICAGO CHROME - Should have at least finished in the money in the last two months in a short distance race to be worth the chance at short odds in a sprint. This horse just hasn't looked sharp of late. Notched a common fig last time out in a Maiden Special race on September 4th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that figure.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #2 WHEREVER HE IS is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better

Possible N.L. Wild Card preview tonight in the Queen City as the L.A. Dodgers head to Cincinnati for a weekend against the Reds.

Look for this one to have a playoff-type feel as Walker Buehler and Luis Castillo square off.

The Dodgers were idle on Thursday and come to town having gone 6-2-2 Under the total for their last 10 road games this season.

Los Angeles sends Buehler and his season ERA of 2.32 to the hill. Buehler has allowed more than 2 runs to be scored on him only once over his last 13 starts, so don't think the Reds are going to be crossing the dish very many times on Friday.

Cincinnati comes into this weekend set off a 1-0 win in Pittsburgh on Thursday as they are now 7-2-1 Under the total for their last 10 games played.

Luis Castillo's home ERA is a respectable 3.43 this season and while he will not outpitch Buehler, I think he can limit the damage the Dodgers can incur.

                          Dodgers-Reds in a low-scoring contest.

                          2* L.A. DODGERS-CINCINNATI UNDER
