Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

      September 24, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia
Hoosier Park has a loaded 15-race card set to start the weekend. The headliners are 2 and 3 three-year-olds competing in stakes action. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 which includes the Hoosier Park Pacing Derby, and the Caesars Trotting Classic begins in Race 12. The sequence has a $20,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 12

1-Fortify (10-1)-Has only 1 win in 12 starts this year but has been in the hunt except for the last start from post 8 in the Mohawk Gold Cup. Fits with this crew and has the gate speed to race near the top of the stack for Dunn and has 1 win in 3 HoP starts.
5-Shake That House (9/2)-Similar profile as #1, is overdue for a win should like the company and can close like a train. AMac should be able to have in striking range turning for the wire.
6-This Is The Plan (4-1)-Recent form has been dull although last was better than the line looks. Gingras could have the pedal down from the word "go" and if he can get a breather on the engine, it could be picture time.
10-Catch The Fire (7/2)-Has drawn outside in the last 3 starts but has raced well. The last win came here in the Dan Patch on 8-13, and Zeron will be back in the bike tonight.

      Race 13

2-Lindy The Great (5/2)-Comes off an impressive, upset win in the Maple Leaf Trot and has won 4 of 10 at Hoosier. Team Miller doesn't avoid the most difficult foes and gets a bit of class relief tonight.
7-Forbidden Trade (8-1)-Almost wired the field in the Maple Trot and then was a sick scratch in his next start. Qualifier on 9-21 at Mohawk was okay and thinking unless 100% he would have stayed home. Blais trainee is making his 1st HoP start and will be steered by usual pilot Bob McClure.

      Race 14

1-Northern Cadilac (9/2)-Raced well at this class at the end of July and just missed in one of those races when starting from the rail. Dave Miller takes the lines and that shouldn't hurt. This is the home track for this 4-year-old and it's a wide-open race.
3-Crook Boyz (5/2)-This is the morning line choice who hasn't raced since 6-13 and is 1-14 on the year. Qualifier on 9-18 was good, the George barn is batting 27% over the last 30 days and Trace Tetrick takes a seat. Will respect connections but probably won't offer much value.
7-Tulhurstsantanna A (7/2)-East coast invader has been facing tougher but has not seen action since 9-4. Has hit the board in 9 of 17 here and the Virgil Morgan Jr. barn has posted 25% winners over the last 30 days. This 8-year-old has gate speed so Zeron could leave but can also race off cover. Can be a player if ready for a big try in a tough race.
10-Clever Character (3-1)-Winner of 10 races in 37 HoP starts fits at this level but will need some luck starting from the 2nd tier. The #1 may leave to protect the rail and if so, Page might be able to work a trip and be in range at the top of the lane.

      Race 15

3-Sand Sniper (6-1)-Zeron takes a spin as Widger sticks with #5. Comes off an improved effort and this pilot could be aggressive and get a close-up seat. This might be a trip-out candidate at a solid price.
5-El Jako N (3-1)-Cullipher trainee was in too tough in the last 2 starts and this smells like a drop and pop situation. Widger should have this 9-year-old in play and looks like a player versus this crew.

      0.50 Late Pick 4

      1,5,6,10/2,7/1,3,7,10/3,5
      Total Bet=$32

Jeff Siegel's National Prime Plays for 9/24/21

        September 24, 2021
Belmont Park – Race 6. Post time: 3:38 ET
        6 – Judge Davis (9/2)

Ran better than the line will show in his debut last month at Saratoga when winding up fourth behind subsequent stakes winner Major General and seems very likely to improve a bunch with experience and distance for a barn that has strong stats with the second-time starter angle. The son of Distorted Humor retains J. Ortiz, and with a clean break projects to be on or near the lead from the get-go. He’s listed at 9/2 on the morning line and at or near that price Shug’s colt will offer good wagering value in the win pool and in rolling exotic play.

        *

Gulfstream Park – Race 9. Post time: 6:12 ET
        2 – Hot Foot Susie (6-1)

Debuting daughter of the speed sire Chito breezed a visually pleasing 10 1/5 seconds at the OBS June Sale and then brought $40,000 through the ring, a very good price for a Florida-bred filly with a modest female family. She’s continued to impress in recent drills over the local main track, so we’re expecting the J. Orseno-trained juvenile to be a major player in this below average affair that is ripe to be won by a fresh face. At 6-1 on the morning line, she’s worth a small gamble as a win play and rolling exotic single.

                #8
                Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                Charles Town - Race #6
#5 Ski Bunny She figures for a perfect trip while spying the pace from close range, and she looks like a good fit with these after a nice first start for the new team when protected off the claim.
#6 Take Me Home She has a right to be tough while getting back on a course over which she's won six races from nine starts, and the guess is she's going to be able to turn the tables on the one who beat her last time out. The one to beat.
#2 Like Me Or Not She beat Take Me Home when they met at Timonium last time out, but that one might be just a bit more reliable to run back to the good effort. Chance if she brings something similar here.
Race Summary Ski Bunny should land a dreamy trip while in touch throughout, and she may be playable enough as the likely second choice on the board.
                Charles Town - Race #7
#1 My Pretty Eyes It took her 12 tries and the drop into maiden claimers to land her first win, but she came right back with a really good effort against similar when hiked into allowance company off the win against cheaper company. If she can work out a trip from the rail, she looks like she can be the right one.
#7 Juba's House Her form can be hit or miss, but her best stuff keeps her in the mix here. That said, she hasn't been a serious threat to a winner in four starts since landing the maiden win, and she'll probably find one or two of these a bit too tough today.
#4 Carson Castle She's probably capable of at least a small move forward in this second start off the layoff, and it was nice to see her finish with a bit of enthusiasm last out for a runner who tends to give away ground late.
Race Summary My Pretty Eyes has really come forward in a couple of starts so far this summer, and she's fast enough to keep in touch from what might be a pocket spot into the turn.
                Charles Town - Race #8
#3 Cedar Run's Fire She does her best work when able to establish the lead, and it looks like she might be quick enough to find the front with these. There's not much to beat in here, and she might discourage the rest.
#5 Shesauptowngirl She might have just enough speed to keep the top choice in her sights early on, but she's probably not a very appealing price with this group. She can win, but she's not for me.
#5 Corky Cowgirl Not much to look at outside of the top pair, but this one should be a big price and at least owns some back runs from last year that might be good enough to land a piece with these. Second start off the break for a share?
Race Summary Cedar Run's Fire and Shesauptowngirl look tough to get past in the finale, but the former has a likely pace edge and may offer a slightly better number in a bad race.

                  Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                  Meadowlands - Race #9
#4 TREACHEROUS DRAGON Game in defeat as pace quickened, one to beat in here.
#1 FIND HAPPINESS Series of seconds ended from post 8, now draws rail.
#6 CAPTIVA Two wins, two seconds and two thirds in six starts since August.
Race Summary Treacherous Dragon's bid for three wins in a row ended at the hands of a razor sharp favorite, who held the lead through a :26.1 final quarter. He held second in the split race that timed 1-2/5 seconds faster, earning a playback tonight. Play 4-1 and 4-6 exactas.
                  Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #8
#7 MUSTANG BEACH Overcame traffic, caught the favorite, continued strong on gallop out.
#2 STONEBRIDGE REX Good first gear, held on to win in last two sire stakes events.
#5 NO PLAN INTENDED Hit board in three straight from posts 8 and 9.
Race Summary Mustang Beach was better than his photo-finish victory suggests. He was trapped 3-deep behind the favorites, weaved through the stretch and shot the rail to catch the even-money pace setter. Play 7-2 and 7-5 exactas.
                  Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #10
#4 BETTER BE DONNA N Did well to finish second to odds-on choice, often outruns her odds.
#3 PARISIAN BLUE CHIP Plays to a steady beat, first or second in 31 of 79 starts.
#5 WATCH ME NOW Chased torrid pace in repeat attempt in stakes race.
Race Summary Better Be Donna N chased the 1-to-5 favorite and held second after a :54.3 back half. The 7-year-old mare could pick up her 25th victory with a duplicate effort. Play a 4-ALL exacta.

                    Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

                    Remington Park - Race #2
#6 Mesa Moon Hasn't been on turf but his pedigree indicates it shouldn't be a tough switch, especially to five furlongs; Triana will get him close to the lead early on, and this one is game enough to dig in, especially vs. state-breds.
#7 Denver City Has won five of six and has a good chance to add to that; his only career came in his first start, which happened at Oaklawn.
#4 Shannon C. Was runner-up to Denver City in the prep for this and usually gives a good account; he's a five-time winner, but has had a lot of chances to top that as he's been second in 11 of his 25 starts.
Race Summary Mesa Moon probably will be in a stalking position behind a very quick leader in Denver City and can dig in when asked; has won four of nine with eight on-the-board finishes.
                    Remington Park - Race #6
#5 Quality Rocket Had a rare off-the-board finish (fourth place) last out and probably needed the start, as he hadn't been on turf since October; is the class of this group with 10 wins in 34 starts. Can make amends and get to the winner's circle vs. these.
#6 Cowboy Mischief Won the allowance prep for this and has won two of his five Remington turf attempts; good enough to be right there again.
#2 Quarky Was third to Denver City in a sprint last time and will likely carveout the fractions as he goes two turns; definitely a threat.
Race Summary Quality Rocket doesn't run many bad ones and is usually pretty salty when the big money is on the line.
                    Remington Park - Race #9
#5 Country Daisy Found another gear and whisked past some tough fillies and mares -- many of these -- in the allowance prep for this and anything close to that will get her back to the winner's circle.
#3 She's All Wolfe Was second behind Country Daisy last out in her first race in four months; always runs well at Remington and will be a strong player again.
#2 Run Slewpy Run Was second behind Gotta See Red last out and won on turf two races back; in excellent form and wouldn't be a big surprise.
Race Summary Country Daisy had a powerful victory vs. similar and can close strongly for another win.

                          # 5 JESS LIPPY 6/1
TRS AMAZING BONNIE Z looks to be a competitive contender. Her 72 average has this filly with among the strongest Equibase speed figs for this event. Should be given a shot - I like the figures from the last contest. Medina has this filly racing well and is a competitive choice based on the solid Equibase Speed Figs put up in short races lately. LOADED RESUME - Is a sharp contender based on figs put up lately under today's conditions. Should compete soundly in the early pace clash which bodes well with this group of horses. JESS LIPPY - The trainer wheels this one back soon to race again. The average class figure alone makes this horse a solid contender.

                            # 2 BIG BIZ 9/2
                            # 5 ACCOUSTICAL 5/2
DOBY looks very strong to best this field. Overall the speed figures of this racer look solid in this competition. Has very good Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. Overall, has one of the best earnings per start in dirt route events in this lot. BIG BIZ - Has been consistently racing well lately. Ought to compete admirably in the pace battle which bodes well with this field. ACCOUSTICAL - Could provide positive dividends based on solid recent Speed Figures with an average of 71. The speed fig of 83 from his last contest looks very strong in here.

                              Gulfstream Park - Race #2 - Post: 2:28pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 63

                              Rating:

                              #1 RIDE ON BYE (ML=9/5)

RIDE ON BYE - I have to figure Engler is making a good move here. This colt can only profit from the shorter trip. Was in a Maiden Special race at Gulfstream Park last time out. That event had an Equibase class figure of 75 and he is moving down right here. A certain solid contender. This colt is tops in earnings per start. Check out this thoroughbred in the saddling enclosure.

                              Vulnerable Contenders: #2 DAVID'S CUPID (ML=3/1), #6 PO BOY (ML=7/2), #5 SO IN LOVE (ML=6/1),

DAVID'S CUPID - Don't think this steed is worth 3/1 in this race. PO BOY - The speed rating last time out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class rating of today's event. Mark this horse as a possibly overvalued equine. SO IN LOVE - Don't think that this filly has value at 6/1 in today's event.
