Ottawa closed out last season winning nine of its last 12 games. The Senators are an improved team. They are 2-1 this season with home victories against the Maple Leafs and Stars. The Senators are 7-0 in their last seven home games. Brady Tkachuk is set for his season debut after signing a big contract. That gives the Senators two very respectable lines with Tkachuk joining Josh Norris and Drake Botherson for a top line and promising Tim Stutzle moving to the second line with Chris Tierney and Alex Formenton. San Jose also is off to a nice start going 2-0 with a one-goal home win against the Jets and an impressive, 5-0, road shutout of the Canadiens two days ago. I don't see the Sharks being much better this season, however. I'm far from sold on their goaltending. Their defensemen have big names, but their play has sharply declined with age. Until upsetting Montreal, the Sharks had lost their previous six away contests. San Jose is 1-5 in its last six visits to Ottawa.

After a season opening win over Chicago, Colorado has lost two straight games, allowing 11 goals in those two losses. The Avalanche led the NHL in scoring with 3.52 gpg and while they are not far off of that through three games, it is that defense that is a concern. They were third in the league with 2.36 goals per game allowed so that needs to shored up and it starts with goalie Darcy Kuemper. The Avalanche are 13-3 in their last 16 games following a loss of three or more goals. Florida expects to make some noise in the Eastern Conference this season and it is off to a great start as it is 3-0, scoring 14 goals in the process. The Panthers are averaging 4.67 gpg which is third in the NHL and this obviously is not sustainable. A road win over Tampa Bay last time out was a big one but they should see a strong defensive effort from Colorado knowing they have to improve to get back on track. Here, we play on road teams when the money line is -100 to -150 getting outscored by 0.2 or more gpg in third period, after allowing six goals or more. This situation is 47-17 (73.4 percent) since 1996. Play (69) Colorado Avalanche

The SMU Mustangs are 6-0 this season and outscoring opponents by 18.5 points per game. They are coming off their bye week and will be ready for Tulane tonight. Tulane is just 1-5 on the season with losses to Ole Miss by 40, ECU by 23 and Houston by 18. The Green Wave also lost to UAB by 7 outright as favorites. Tulane is 0-5 ATS in its last five road games against a team with a winning record. SMU is 4-0 ATS in its last four home games. Give me SMU.

Thursday CFB Free play. My selection is on SMU minus the points over Tulane at 7:30 pm et on Thursday.
We unsuccessfully backed Tulane two weeks ago as the Green Wave got rolled once again, suffering a 40-22 home loss against Houston. That loss effectively dashed any hopes Tulane had of reaching a Bowl game this season. There was so much optimism entering the season and certainly after the Green Wave gave Oklahoma all it could handle back in Week 1 but it's been virtually all downhill since then. I count only one or two more winnable games on the rest of Tulane's schedule and this isn't one of them. SMU has quietly jumped out to a perfect 6-0 start, scoring 30+ points in all six games while going 4-2 ATS. Tulane hasn't had a lick of success defensively this season and now has to face a high-octane Mustangs offense that already has a 350-yard rushing performance and 395-yard passing effort to its credit this season. After turning in a bit of a shaky overall effort against Navy last time out, this is a big ramp up spot for SMU before it heads out on the road for games against Houston and Memphis over the next two weeks. Now with a national ranking in tow, it's also an opportunity for the Mustangs to show out in a spotlight weeknight game on ESPN. Tulane had a similar opportunity at home against Houston two weeks ago and fell flat. I don't see the Green Wave picking themselves up off the mat here. Take SMU.
