Frank Carulli: Stronach 5 Analysis: Friday, November 19, 2021

          November 18, 2021 | By Frank Carulli

Fueled by 45-1 winner Shanghai Mist at Golden Gate, one bettor correctly picked all five winners in last week's Stronach 5, taking home $99,519. Will history repeat itself in this Friday's Stronach 5 that spans five races at three tracks in less than an hour? Join the excitement for as little as a $1 wager, or play multiple combinations to increase your chances. Here's an early look at this week's sequence, with an update to follow Saturday after scratches:

LEG A (Laurel Park, 7th race, 3:34 EST): GALE WINDS gained after a bumpy start two back in allowance company but raced evenly in a fast-paced follow-up try on the grass. MUTAKAAMIL plunged to the bottom level and defeated four rivals at 1-to-9 odds for his first win in 20 attempts, now he starts for high-percentage new connections. DREAMING OF CARATS showed good zip in his last two starts, a point magnified in a field that is a combined 5-for-89 on the main track. The connections see something they like in DAPER'S DRINK, a lightly-raced 5-year-old with a 1-23 record this year, so use him at 12-1 off the claim.

LEG B (Gulfstream Park, 8th race, 3:53 EST): GITANA, first or second in 9 of 17 starts, chased odds-on repeater Bramble Berry (8-22, $216k) through a :45.2 half mile on a day when the track played very slow. He bid 3-wide at the top of the stretch but settled for second best in the long sprint. He is today's solo play on the cutback to 6F.

LEG C (Laurel Park, 8th race, 4:02 EST): POWERFUL ALLY summoned his back class and blazed through the claiming ranks at Parx after a 14-month layoff, winning three times by a combined 12-1/2 lengths and holding second in a long sprint two back. AMEN CORNER packs late kick, should get a lively pace flow and offers good value at 8-1. HIS NAME IS SUE is a model of ultra consistency for a barn that keeps them sharp, but he offers little value, having been dismissed as a prohibitive favorite in 8 of his last 10 starts.

LEG D (Golden Gate, 2nd race, 4:18 EST): Battle of Memphis broke slowly and rallied 4-wide to win off a seven-month layoff, but he has raced exclusively on turf, caught a 3-for-49 rival and is 7-to-5 on the morning line. HARBOR KITTY rallied 4-wide and came up a neck short in his bid for three consecutive photo-finish victories on the Golden Gate main track. FLICFLAT is usable at 8-1 after he rallied for third as the favorite and second in a race dominated by closers the last two times at 6 furlongs.

LEG E (Gulfstream Park, 9th race, 4:23 EST): Good recent form abounds in this route race as 8 of 9 fillies go postward with $44,000-plus in earnings. We'll go six deep in Leg E on the ticket in hopes that it is still alive.

          Stronach 5 Ticket
          Leg A: 1, 2, 7, 9
          Leg B: 5
          Leg C: 1, 5
          Leg D: 1, 3, 7
          Leg E: 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9

Best Horse Racing Bets for Friday, November 19, 2021
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

Charles Town Races, Del Mar Racing, and Turf Paradise all delivered plenty of underdogs and even a couple of sleepers for my Friday racing picks.

In fact, I only found one wager-worthy morning-line favorite in the nine races I assessed.

Remember that you can check out the entire Friday race-card of each of the three tracks by visiting our recommended online race books.

            Good luck!
Friday Picks for Charles Town Races

We’ll start on the main track with race five, a 4-1/2-furlong allowance run for two-year-old’s that have never won two races. My money’s on the second-favored (at 7/2) Golden Hughes, ridden by Arnaldo Bocachica.

This colt finished all five of his career starts in the money, winning his third maiden attempt in August, then finishing second in an allowance race in October. I’m convinced he’s got what it takes to best this eight-horse field.

Anthony Farrior—who’s having the best year of his career—trains Golden Hughes for Conroy Thoroughbreds LLC.

Race six is a 4-1/2-furlong allowance optional claiming race on the main track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 4/1 underdog, Exact, with veteran jockey J.D. Acosta in the irons.
This three-year-old filly has the best stats in this eight-horse field: Nine money finishes in 14 career starts, four of those wins. More to the point, all four of her wins have been this year.

The morning-line favorite, on the other hand, hasn’t finished in the money once in her six 2021 races.

Michael M. Moore trains Exact for owner Michael R. Day.

Race seven is a 6-1/2-furlong allowance race for West Virginia-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won two races. I’m backing the 9/5 morning-line favorite, Love to Zoom, with top jockey Jose Montano aboard.

This three-year-old filly moneyed three of her four career starts, winning one—solid stats in comparison to those of the other seven competitors in this race.

Love to Zoom is trained by co-owner Ronney W. Brown for himself and Nicole Brown. Jose Montano has been in the irons for Love to Zoom’s last three races.
Friday’s Picks for Del Mar Racing

Let’s begin on the main track with race two, a one-mile allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward.

Despite being aggressively campaigned at the graded stakes level, the morning-line favorite’s erratic record doesn’t convince me that she can win this race, so I’m putting my money on the third-favored (at 7/2) Velvet Slippers, piloted by Juan J. Hernandez.

This three-year-old filly finished three of her four career starts in the money, winning her third attempt in the maiden class and following up with a second-place finish in the Dark Mirage Stakes (Black Type) at Los Alamitos in September.

Hall of Famer Bob Baffert trains Velvet Slippers for owner Sarah Kelly.

Let’s move to the turf course for race four, a five-furlong claiming race for three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting both of my dollars on the 5/1 sleeper, Bedrock, with Abel Cedillo in the irons.
This four-year-old gelding has a good statistical record that looks even better in comparison to the rest of this lackluster eight-horse field: Eleven money finishes in 18 career starts, with five wins.

Robert B. Hess, Jr. trains Bedrock for owners David A. Bernsen LLC, Todd Cady, Thomas Kilgore, Jeffrey Lambert, David Medina, and William F. Moore.

We’re back on the main track for race seven, a 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race for California-bred or sired fillies and mares three years old and upward. I like the second-favored (at 7/2) Kristi’s Tiger, ridden by veteran jockey Mike E. Smith.

This four-year-old filly moneyed eleven of her 16 career starts, winning four—which gives her a better statistical record than that of the morning-line favorite. She’ll do.

With more than four decades in the business, Thomas Ray Bell, II trains Kristi’s Tiger for owners Richard A. Bell and Clark O. Brewster.
My Friday Picks for Turf Paradise

We’ll start on the turf with race two, a five-furlong allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward. My money’s on the second-favored (at 7/2) My Crafty Gal, with veteran jockey Leslie Mawing aboard.

This six-year-old mare finished 21 of her 32 career starts in the money, winning eleven of them. In 2021, she’s moneyed six out of eight starts, with three wins. Her stats say she can do it. My bankroll says she better.

Twenty-year racing veteran Priscilla Leon trains My Crafty Gal for owner Alberto Flores.

Let’s switch to the main track for race four, a 6-1/2-furlong allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 9/2 underdog Smooth Papa, piloted by jockey Keivan Serrano.
In this six-horse field, this three-year-old gelding is a stand-out with four money finishes in seven career starts, three of those wins, including the Arizona Breeders’ Stakes in March and the Gene Fleming Breeders’ Derby in April.

Smooth Papa is trained by co-owner and longtime racing veteran Kevin Eikleberry for Reunion Racing Stables LLC and himself.

And we’re back on the turf course for race five, a 7-1/2-furlong allowance race for three-year-olds and upward that have never won four races or have never won on turf. I’m buying a win ticket on the 6/1 sleeper Avalon King, ridden by veteran jockey Daniel P. Vergara.

This five-year-old gelding finished in the money for 18 of his 27 career starts, winning seven. His 2021 record is even better: Five wins and five other money finishes in 13 starts. That makes him the star of this eight-horse field.

Longtime racing veteran Debbie O’Brien trains Avalon King for owner Larry O’Brien. She has tapped Vergara to saddle Avalon King for his last five races, resulting in one second-place finish and four visits to the winner’s circle.

              Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 19th November 2021
By: Racing and Sports Time published 2021-11-19 at 10:55 AM (GMT +11:00)

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Moonee Valley, Orange, Ipswich, Naracoorte and Terang.

              MOONEE VALLEY: RACE 4 @ 7:45 PM

BRILLIANT VENTURE (2) has been in career-best form of late with two wins and four placings from his past six outings. Goes well for Thornton who has two wins and three placings from nine steers and has placed over this track and trip. Will be very hard to run down. CHAINS OF HONOUR (1) has been handy in both runs for the new stable and gets 3kg off with the claim. Best form puts him right in this. INTHELAPOFTHEGODS (9) is racing in fine fashion with a win and three seconds from his past four starts. Has to be included. ANGELIC SCENT (8) has only missed the top four once in seven starts and is a must for the multiples. GUNS ABLAZING (3) has a win and a placing from two starts over this course and distance and could sneak into the finish.
              SELECTIONS: Brilliant Venture to win.

              ORANGE: RACE 6 @ 4:09 PM

DANISH PRINCE (4) was a winner two back before sticking on gamely for fourth at the latest, beaten 1.4L. Is 2/4 in the placings at the distance - including a win. Sure to run well. BLAZING (2) was unlucky not to finish in the minors last time at Hawkesbury, beaten 1.6L. Going in the right direction and can make his presence felt. TOUGH CASE (10) has been going well this time in. Draws to get the gun run and winning jockey is back in the saddle. Top three prospect. HIDDEN ACE (14) put in a good performance two back before going amiss last start. Is 1/1 at the track and is worth some thought.
              SELECTIONS: Going with Danish Prince.

              IPSWICH: RACE 9 @ 5:40 PM

ATOMIC BOMB (8) does find it hard to win but has racked up nine placings to go alongside his lone win. He is third up here and is up to his best distance. The wet track will be to his advantage and top jockey Robbie Fradd is sticking with him and so are we. GINJA (4) was quite unlucky not to have won last start after losing some ground at the start. He is racing in good heart and again should give a good account of himself. Hard to beat. GOLDSCHLAGER (7) is another that did not get all favours last time out. She is being tested at a longer distance and her racing pattern suggests that it should be right up her alley. A win would come as no surprise. LOBURN LASS (3) has been in great form this season and her only miss came two starts back when being trapped wide. She has a great draw and will make full use of top apprentice Zac Lloyd's 2kg allowance. Watch closely.
SELECTIONS: Value bet of the day Atomic Bomb each way.

              NARACOORTE: RACE 4 @ 3:55 PM

THANASI (6) has had one blip in a string of strong efforts. Led placing at Penola the latest bet 4-5. Gets plenty of weight relief at this level and can take the race out with average luck from the sticky gate. RHYTHMATIC (2) is a veteran stablemate busting to win. Found one better in stronger the latest and should get a soft run from the rail. JUSTA JILLAROO (8) is also racing like an early winner. Was lipped out in the Penola second-up and won't have to improve much to be a threat. CRYPTO CURRENCY (3) resumes with the premier hoop booked and owns an Oakbank trial win. Is 2/2 this track and 2/4 fresh and will run along from the low barrier. Keep very safe.
              SELECTIONS: Backing Thanasi.

              TERANG: RACE 1 @ 12:55 PM

TALLANDOON (5) built on the good debut when just nudged out at Pakenham at the mile. He can control the race again and fitter the extra 250m shouldn't bother. The one to beat. COASTABLE (9) is tracking well despite being thumped the latest by Launch Pad. Covered the others and she should go close. YOUNG LUCAS (7) is running out of chances but has been threatening at Warrnambool and gets another chance. DANDY CLASSIC (10) was better the latest and can't be ruled out over the longer journey.
              SELECTIONS: Going with Tallandoon.

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily “Workout Report, Analysis, and Wagering Strategies” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

The selections are posted at 6:00 a.m. and updated later in the morning to reflect late scratches and changes (approximately 10:30 a.m.). For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

                  Single: 3-Map to My Heart

Forecast: Map to My Heart has been away for more than a year but the daughter of Liam’s Map shows a work tab at Los Alamitos that should have her fit enough and based on the ability she displayed over this course and distance as a 2-year-old she appears to have landed in a winnable spot. This maiden special weight turf sprint came up softer than par, so at 3-1 on the morning line let’s go with the B. Koriner-trained filly as a win play and rolling exotic single.

                  Use: 2-California Kook; 4-Velvet Slippers

Forecast: California Kook was out of her element in the Zenyatta S.-G1 at Santa Anita last month but returns to her favorite dirt surface while dropping back into the first-level allowance ranks so we’re expecting the daughter of Boisterous to regain her winning form. She does her best running from off the pace and should get the patient ride she requires with the switch to U. Rispoli. Velvet Slippers is lightly-raced with rapidly rising Beyer speed figures, continues to impress in the morning, and is a “must use” in rolling exotic play. In a field that should produce a modest early pace, she could inherit the role as the controlling speed and be very tough to catch given that type of trip. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with a very slight edge on top to California Kook.

                  Notable Workouts:

Velvet Slippers (Nov. 7, Santa Anita, 4f, :48.3h). Grade: B+
Always going the better of the two inside Enbarr (same time) while finishing a long neck in front at the wire without every really being asked, final quarter mile in :24 flat. On the upgrade for B. Baffert and has all of her conditions.

                  Use: 6-Hay Juan; 7-Tizlightning

Forecast: Tizlightning won at first asking in clever fashion with a solid speed figure at Los Alamitos in September. He returns protected in a starter optional claimer, lands the cozy outside post, and will be tough to beat if he duplicates his maiden performance. Hay Juan is the quickest in the field and will take them as far as he can for new trainer D. O’Neill. The Danzing Candy colt was straight as a string to hang on when beating maiden $50,000 foes over this track and distance in early September and shows a bullet local workout (5f, 1:00h) seven days ago to indicate that further improvement is probable. We’re expecting the winner to be one or the other, so we’ll include both in our rolling exotics with a very slight edge on top to Tizlightning.

                  Notable Workouts:

Tizlightning (November 13, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02.3h TT). Grade: B
Easy move, just galloping along looking fine, final three furlongs in a breezing :12.1 and :37.4. Freshened since good maiden claiming debut win and should be quite competitive with starter’s allowance foes.

Use: 3-Barristan The Bold; 4-Mr Vargas; 7-First Prez

Forecast: We’ll spread the fourth race, a $25,000 claiming turf sprint for older horses. Barristan The Bold made the running but faded late in a similar affair down the Hillside Course at Santa Anita last month in what was a fairly strong race for the level. This shortening in trip should help, and a repeat of his troubled third over this course and distance three runs back probably would be good enough to win. At 4-1 on the morning line, he’s worth a play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics Mr Vargas finished a good third in an allowance $40,000 optional seller sprinting on this turf course in late August. The layoff is concerning and so is the drop in class, so we have to wonder what kind of condition he’s in. Clearly, on best day he can win against this group but it’s entirely possible he’s seen better days. First Prez has a prior win over the local lawn and could snap to life in his first-off-the claim for J. Mullins. The First Dude gelding projects to enjoy a nice pace-stalking trip outside and then have every chance from the quarter pole home to take control. At 6-1 on the morning line, you have to include him somewhere.

                  Use: 4-Riviera Champ; 7-Town Boy

Forecast: Town Boy seems fairly solid in this maiden $32,000 claiming sprint for juveniles. Runner-up in his last pair with rising speed figures that are stronger than par for the level, the son of Speightstown returns to the level at which he was claimed, switches to A. Cedillo, and should be on or near the lead throughout from a comfortable outside draw. Riviera Champ, a $50,000 M. Maker claim at Santa Anita, has two-turned on grass in all three of his career starts and today shortens to a sprint, switches to dirt, and reappears in a softer $32,000 affair. If he can run, this would be a good spot to show it. Two very sharp workouts over the local main track since joining this barn are quite encouraging. We’ll give Town Boy top billing but include both in our rolling exotics.

Use: 2-Fly to Mars; 8-Absolute Unit

Forecast: Fly to Mars draws a much better post today and should draft into an ideal stalking, ground-saving position and then have every chance to regain his winning form when the pressure is turned on. The veteran gelding always has run well over Del Mar turf course but has failed as the favorite in each of his last four starts, though not running badly at all. Today looks like his day. Absolute Unit, drops below his claim level in his second start since joining the M. Maker barn, has a prior win over the local turf course and is a strong fit based on his clever win two races back. He looks better on form than his 8-1 morning line, so we’ll toss him in on a few tickets as a back-up or a saver.

                  Single: 4-Delta Wind

Forecast: Not sure what happened to Delta Wind when she flopped badly at 60 cents on the dollar in a similar spot for first-level allowance fillies and mares at Santa Anita last month. She appeared hot and bothered in the post parade and then seemed totally disinterested while earning a Beyer speed figure 26 points lower than her maiden win over the Del Mar main track two runs back. She was very impressive in that 11 length romp while turning in a performance that would bury this group, so let’s give her a chance to make amends and hope she shows up with her best stuff today. At 5/2 on the morning line. she’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

                  Notable Workouts:

Delta Wind (November 11, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.1h). Grade: B+
Appeared to lose focus a bit and was a tad green through the lane but still turned in solid five furlong main track drill without being asked, splits of :23.3, :35.1 and 1:00.1 for J. Sadler. A bit quirky but has plenty of ability and will be tough to beat vs. non-winners of two types if she performs up to potential.

Use: 5-Bonnie Brae; 10-La Deuxieme Etoile

Forecast: Bonnie Brae was quite unlucky when well-backed (5/2) on the tote and then winding up fourth in her debut sprinting on dirt last month at Santa Anita. She broke slowly, fell far back, then took hold and finished with good energy but too late. Yes, her late kick was race-shape aided and may have flattered her performance, but the daughter of Grazen should benefit greatly from the outside and has the pedigree to handle grass and move up over a distance of ground. A bullet recent five furlong workout (:59 1/5) is another positive factor. La Deuxieme Etoile was overmatched in the Zuma Beach S. last month at Santa Anita but isn’t today and is strictly the one to beat. The D. O’Neill-trained filly adds blinkers for the first time and has previous form over this course and distance at this level that makes her strictly the one to beat.

                      Charles Town - Race #6
                      Picks Notes
#6 Exact She'll make her local debut here after a decent effort from close range at Parx. She is probably quick enough to keep up at this abbreviated trip, and she might get the right kind of chase-and-take-control trip.
#8 Sweetonthegents She should be able to get a similar trip to the top choice while prompting the pace from the outside, but she doesn't always see out this trip in the final yards. Think she'll settle underneath tonight.
#3 Barbsgray Lion She should be a nice price while stepping up off the easy score with a cheap bunch last time out, and she might be able to hang around for a piece of this.
Race Summary Exact probably gets bet a bit below the 4/1 ML price, but she has a right to be a handful in here after a good sprint effort last time out. Her dirt form has been pretty good despite the fact that she has done most of her work on the lawn.

                      Charles Town - Race #7
                      Picks Notes
#1 River Rewards Rvf She steps up off the claim after scoring nicely at the $12,500 level in her debut run. She moves into a capable barn and has the right kind of style to sit a good trip right up near the top with these while stretching out.
#8 Cedars Bulls Eye She's capable of something better than she showed last time out, but I worry she's overbet again in this spot. She's already had a handful of chances at this level and might land another share tonight.
#2 Love to Zoom She has some form that makes her tough, but she doesn't always finish off her races, and she is going to take cash again tonight. Inclined to try and beat her tonight.
Race Summary River Rewards Rvf might offer a fair price while stepping up into allowance company off a fairly cheap maiden claiming win, but she might get the right kind of trip to track the pace on the inside.

                      Charles Town - Race #8
                      Picks Notes
#4 Kyle He has a little bit of tactical pace and can adapt to whatever happens out of the gate, and he has only missed the exacta once from seven local tries. Dangerous here, and I'd be happy to sign up at anything like the 5/1 ML price.
#6 G Daddy He'll get bet for a tough barn, and his form with similar in a couple of local starts stacks up really well here. Can't argue with anyone landing here.
#5 Sacco and Vanzetti He has some claim on this one, but he can be a bit bashful when confronted in the stretch of his races, so his best chance comes from blowing this open off the turn.
Race Summary Kyle has some intrigue here from close range, and he's better than what he showed last out at Mountaineer. His local record has been really reliable, and he seems as likely as any of these.

                        Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #1
                        Picks Notes
#6 DA MAGICIAN Late runner lacked room until stretch, taken to upset.
#4 IM A DIRECTOR N Battling serious recent bout with seconditis, Napolitano's choice of two.
#8 DARK HORSE Doesn't shy from photo-finish camera, has post 8 to contend with.
Race Summary Da Magician was trapped on the rail and lacked running room until the stretch. He finished willingly once free, should get a livlier pace flow against similar rivals today and offers good value. Play 6-4 and 6-8 exactas.

                        Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #1
                        Picks Notes
#1 MUSICAL SPELL Controlled slow pace for first win of year, starts for new barn.
#6 SOMBRE Gets needed class relief, last won at a notch above this level.
#4 MEADOWBRANCH NOBLE Some late gain from post 8 on the class drop last week.
Race Summary With several contenders battling a breaking habit, we'll take a longshot stab on Musical Spell, who was claimed out of a win at half-mile Flamboro Downs with an 0-for-22 record this year. The connections liked something about the 10-year-old and he lands in an ideal condition from the rail. Play a 1-4-6 exacta box.

                        Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #5
                        Picks Notes
#5 CONTROL HEAVEN Got away easy in repeat score but responded when asked.
#4 TAKE A GAMBLE Upstaged series of in-money finishes with back-to-back series romps.
#6 FLASH CUBE Chased but couldn't stay with Take A Gamble in last pair.
Race Summary Control Heaven controlled the pace through a :59.3 middle half in a slower division of the Fall Harvest Series last week, but he looked good doing it and found another gear when needed. He seeks his third consecutive win in the $52,300 final. Play 5-4 and 5-6 exactas.

                          Del Mar - Race #2
                          Picks Notes
#5 Trouville Has a finishing touch on occasion, especially when she gets a lively pace ahead of her; was an easy winner the last time she was on dirt.
#3 Ginja Was third in the Lucky Spell last out and is well placed in this two-turn run; speed makes her dangerous.
#2 California Kook Has had her share of appearances in graded stakes races but has done much better when faced with company similar to what she faces today. Has class and looks like a strong player.
Race Summary Trouville has a good closing move and has a lot of speedsters in front of her today; came on well for fourth on the turf last out and should enjoy the return to the main track.

                          Del Mar - Race #6
                          Picks Notes
#1 Dr. Troutman Set a lively pace and wound up third last out; likes to be on the front end and that's where he'll be today. One to catch.
#2 Fly the Mars Forced the issue last time, but his closing second two back would make him very tough here.
#5 French Getaway Has the late move that will make him a player in the closing yards; didn't fire last time but takes a slight drop for this one.
Race Summary Dr. Troutman has speed and the rail and should be able to control this one; can show the energy to hang on.

                          Del Mar - Race #7
                          Picks Notes
#2 Kristi's Tiger Held on for second last out and gets Hall of Famer Smith aboard for the sprint; can carve out a good trip.
#4 Delta Wind Ran fourth vs. similar last out after an 11-length maiden win two back; does her best on the front end and will probably give that a go.
#5 Big Summer Last for a maiden win last out and has been on the board in all five of her races; game and a contender.
Race Summary Kristi's Tiger turns back from a mile and is in a good spot to show a decent late run; one to look for in the stretch.
