Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

                November 29, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia

Northfield Park has a 14-race card scheduled with the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                Race 11

2-Tump That (5-1)-Won and then faced tougher than this crew and had an even effort. Could make the most of the drop and there isn't a true standout in this group.
5-Beauty Desires (5/2)-Trip dependent 5-year-old can take a picture but needs to be put in play early. Should be tough to catch if Davis can get on the lead before turning for the wire.
6-Midnight Matt (6-1)-Made every call a winning one when dropped to this level last week. Having a recent win at this class is something no one else in this field can claim.

                Race 12

1-Rose Run Wassup (9/5)-Raced on Wednesday night and broke stride at the start at 1/9. Trainer takes the lines here and the short price is hard to swallow but should be a player versus this group if minds manners.
2-Lady Fireworks (5-1)-Lost as 8/5 chalk in last and that was on 11-15. Now makes the 1st start for the Kreiser barn and has hit the board in 4 of 8 here with 1 win. Will look for improvement in a race without much form.
8-From Now On (20-1)-Price shot had a nice effort versus this kind and then bumped up and broke stride. Had a big try in the last start from the 2nd tier and did stay trotting. Can challenge if Lems provides a sharp steer.

                Race 13

2-Dragon Ruler (8/5)-Drops to the level of the last picture which came on 10-3 from the rail. Merriman has the gate speed to get on the engine and could steal a quarter. No excuses allowed, this should be go-time.

                Race 14

2-Priceless Shadow (3-1)-One of 2 from the Clegg barn with Merriman steering #6. This post helps the cause, should be on the point or sitting right behind the morning line choice #5.
5-Feverslastcruise (9/5)-Camera shy filly is only 1-25 this year but comes off a win. Wrenn should be looking to get on the point again and to not look back.
6-The Kings Queen (9-1)-Ontario bred makes the 2nd local start and tries Lasix for the 2nd time. Comes back at the same level and some money showed in the last start from the 8-hole. Could offer a nice return here and it's best to respect.
7-Sunshine Queen (6-1)-Has been 1st or 2nd in all 5 starts since going on Lasix. Moves-up, Merriman takes a seat and has good gate speed. Will look for an aggressive steer and should offer a solid price.

                $1.00 Late Pick 4

                2,5,6/1,2,8/2/2,5,6,7
                Total Bet=$36

                  Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                  Parx Racing - Race #3
                  Picks Notes
#2 Liam's Lady She woke up a bit when sent around two turns again last time out, and she can probably land another good trip tracking the pace here. Interesting with anything near her best.
#7 Shirley Greene She rolled in her local debut, landing the maiden win by more than six, and this is a really logical spot for her to return to try winners. Probably overbet on the hike to face winners.
#4 Artie's Rose She can be a bit dicey in the final stages, but she's probably a good fit with the locals while racing from close range. Something like her last keeps her in the mix.
Race Summary Liam's Lady found some better form last time out, and she may be competitive with these at a mid-range price if she has another small move forward in her today.

                  Parx Racing - Race #8
                  Picks Notes
#3 La Waun He is not meeting much other pace in here, and he looks quickest early here. He didn't show much when racing at this level a couple times earlier this year, but he might get a bit cozier trip up top today.
#7 The Sicarii He's a reliable finisher with running lines that make him tough here, but he doesn't have a bunch of early speed, and that might be a liability given today's race shape.
#2 Seanow He's capable of something better than he showed last time out, and he's quick enough to stay close to the top choice early. Best stuff would probably do.
Race Summary La Waun should be quick enough to find the front in here, and that may give him a chance to show something better than he did in previous tries at this level. He'll probably offer a decent number with a real chance up top.

                  Parx Racing - Race #10
                  Picks Notes
#7 Spikes Shirl He has a little bit of appeal in the finale while dropping in class out of some tougher starter spots. That last one was a bit better, and that kind of form should transfer well in this easier spot.
#2 American Talent He didn't bring his best last time out after a long string of good tries, so the drop does seem a bit less than ideal after that dull run. Capable with his baseline run.
#10 Naughty Prince He's another tough dropper in here, and his reliable finishing ability should have him charging late. Worry that he's a bit overbet in here.
Race Summary Spikes Shirl is one of a couple of tough droppers in here, and he probably gets overlooked a bit in favor of the others. Wonder if he can wake up a bit more today with this kind.

                    Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

                    Remington Park - Race #1
                    Picks Notes
#1 Rosie's Outlaw Was third in a stakes race in his last and ran well on the turf in his last two; an improving sort who's well placed today.
#4 Rockport Kat Came up empty in his last two but those can against decent rivals; can return to good form.
#5 Daaher's Success Was an easy winner as he dropped to the bottom level last out and can still be a factor on this step up in class.
Race Summary Rosie's Outlaw is running at his best, and continued improvement can get him to the winner's circle here.

                    Remington Park - Race #5
                    Picks Notes
#3 Guinnessey Has enjoyed his two starts in Oklahoma after shipping in from southern California; after a 17-length maiden win on dirt, he beat claiming runners in stylish fashion on turf and now moves back to the main track. Capable of a third straight win.
#6 Sports Fan Ran on well for second last out and has been on the board in his last three; fits well at this level.
#1 Flexati Has been in good allowance races and can improve with this class drop.
Race Summary Guinnessey has rolled in both local races and can be tough as he takes another step up in class.

                    Remington Park - Race #7
                    Picks Notes
#6 Turquesa Third in her last two and the Gun Runner filly is primed to win this one; can take it with a late move.
#1 Austin City Girl Moves over from the turf and can get a good inside run; capable of running well in switching back to the main track.
#4 Brodie Baby Was third in all three starts, including her last two going two turns; should be very tough on the front end.
Race Summary Turquesa will get enough pace in from her this time and should be able to close a lot of ground vs. these.

The horse racing card at BetOnline has four thoroughbred tracks, with some afternoon and evening racing available. The stakes scene doesn’t pick up again until December 3. Oaklawn Park opens their winter meet this week, which includes the $150,000 Advent Stakes on Friday.

Turf Paradise has four small stakes races, and Gulfstream Park has a couple of $75,000 stakes races on Friday as well. The Saturday card is going to turn attention to Aqueduct Racetrack for the running of the $750,000 Cigar Mile Handicap (Gr. 1). It’s the second straight weekend that we’ve had a $750,000 race.

Our first look at TheSportsGeek on Monday is going to be at Turf Paradise in the desert. Turf Paradise has eight races worth $111,410 in prize money on Monday in Arizona. Head below for our free Turf Paradise picks for November 29, 2021.

Race 2 covers 7 ½ furlongs for a $22,100 purse on the turf. Club Mesquite and Heir should have a big presence in the stretch for the top prize.

Club Mesquite gets a favorable post position and likely has a good run in this one. He has finished 5th, 8th, 11th, 4th, 6th in his previous five attempts.

Club Mesquite most recently finished 6th on October 29 for a $22,000 purse. This was after going 4th in a $35,000 assignment on October 11.

Heir is going on Monday looking for his first win. He has finished 11st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 2nd. In his last attempt, Heir came on to place 2nd behind My Indy by 3 lengths in a $20,600 assignment.

That was encouraging after going 6th on October 10 at Santa Anita Park in a $22,000 race. Against this competition, Heir should have another encouraging run.

Race 4 is a $10,660 event covering 6 furlongs on the dirt. This looks like a good one between Diem Now and Laugharoo in the stretch run.

Diem Now is 4 for 9 in her career, and has finished 1st, 1st, 5th in her last three outings. She won back-to-back attempts on September 11 and September 25.

In her latest win, Diem Now beat A Filly Can Dream by 4 ¾ lengths in a $9,960 event on September 25. It was a good race for Diem Now, though she dropped off in her last go.

Diem Now finished 5th on November 11 in a $13,160 race. That was too tough higher in class, but she’s back down.

Laugharoo is 5 for 20 in her career, with the filly finishing 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 5th, 5th, 2nd in her last seven outings. In her last win, Laugharoo defeated Red Noon Rising by ¾ lengths in a $12,000 race on April 2.

She was able to get back on track after finishing 5th in back-to-back outings. Laugharoo placed 2nd behind Naughty Swagger for a $11,360 purse on November 6. Down further in grade to $10,660, this doesn’t look too tough.

Race 7 is another $10,6660 event at Turf Paradise Park on Monday afternoon. Guarding Elk Camp and Dance Fighter should be in touch at the wire.

Guarding Elk Camp is 3 for 13 in her career, and has finished 1st, 5th, 1st in her previous three attempts. She is coming off a solid bid to beat Red Nova by 5 ¾ lengths for a $10,400 purse on November 5.

Guarding Elk Camp got the win after finishing 5th in a $6,710 race on September 26 at Emerald Downs. The transfer to Turf Paradise appeared to do her well.

Dance Fighter is 3 for 7 in her career and sizing up a hat-trick on Monday. She had a ¾ length win for a $6,300 purse on October 17, and then followed up again.

In her latest attempt, Dance Fighter defeated Don’t Rub It by 2 lengths in a $6,600 assignment. Edging up in class, this should be tougher. However, based on her recent form and this price, she has to be worth considering.

BetOnline has four thoroughbred racecourses scheduled for Monday. There isn’t any stakes racing to be entertaining on the card, but next weekend has some good racing with the $750,000 Cigar Handicap (Gr. 1) at Aqueduct Racetrack.

                        Industry Leading 9% Cashback!

Aqueduct also has three $250,000 graded races on the schedule on Saturday. The wealthiest race outside of Aqueduct is at Los Alamitos Race Course with the running of the $300,000 Starlet Stakes (Gr. 1). It’s a big event for Los Alamitos on the west coast.

Gulfstream Park has the most stakes races with nine scheduled next Saturday. They will be hosting the Pegasus in late January as the biggest event since the Breeders’ Cup. We’re at Turf Paradise and Mountaineer Park on Monday.

Mountaineer Park has eight races on the dirt for $85,200 in prize money available. Head below for our free Mountaineer Park picks for November 29, 2021.

We’ll get started on Monday night with Race 3, a mile and 70-yarder for a $8,100 purse. Look for Carry On and Untapped Energy to have a big say in this one.

Carry On will have to fight from the outside to get there, but should have a big chance. She’s been consistent with finishes of 3rd, 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 1st in her previous five attempts.

In her most recent outing, Carry On beat Showstomper by 3 ¼ lengths for a $9,000 purse. That was an impressive go after placing 2nd behind Fangirl by 4 ½ lengths in the same grade.

Untapped Energy should be tough from the No. 2 hole. She is 6 for 23 in her career, and has finished 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd in her last five attempts.

Most recently, Untapped Energy placed 2nd behind Lady Kaza by 3 lengths for a $11,000 purse. This was after a 5 ¾ length win for a $7,900 purse on October 24.

I’m going to give the nod to Carry On at a better price after a solid showing in a $9,000 event in what should be between the No. 8 and No. 2.

Race 4 covers 6 furlongs for a $8,500 purse. Yes Darlin and Springmeier should have the best chance of going in tonight.

Yes Darlin is 6 for 59 in his career and is looking for a hat-trick on Monday. She has finished 3rd, 8th, 1st, 1st in her previous four attempts.

Yes Darlin was a 3 ½ length winner over Late Act Jones for a $7,900 purse on Halloween. Then followed up for a confident 4 ¼ length win in a $8,300 event on November 15.

Springmeier is 14 for 49 in his career, and should have a big chance to get this one done on Monday night. He has gone 2nd, 4th, 1st in his previous three attempts.

Springmeier most recently looked good by 3 ½ lengths for a $8,300 win on November 2. He finished 4th on September 21 at Fort Erie in a $15,435 race.

The class drop immediately helped put Springmeier back at the top. Another promising run can be expected from Springmeier in this class on Monday night.

Race 6 is a 5 ½ furlong event for a $18,800 purse tonight. Love’s Tavito and Lucky Tuesday should be there at the wire after 5 ½ furlongs.

                        Love’s Tavito is a one-time winner in 15 attempts, with a winning run on October 24 for a $16,500 purse. That was a quality 3 ½ length win for a $16,500 purse.

Following that attempt, Love’s Tavito showed 3rd on November 7 for a $18,800 purse. It was a solid try in a slightly higher class.

Lucky Tuesday is 1 for 8, finishing 3rd, 1st, 5th in her previous three attempts. Two races back, she struck for a neck win for a $13,400 purse.

However, fell off to finish 5th most recently in a $18,800 event. She pressured early and then weakened towards the back. I prefer Love’s Tavito at better value.

                          # 7 LAZARETTO 8/1
                          # 8 MISSION WRAPITUP 5/1
MONDAY'S WITH MIKE looks to be a formidable contender and is a competitive value bet given the line at 8/1. Could beat this field given the 76 Equibase Speed Figure earned in his last outing. LAZARETTO - Profitable jock and conditioner team, with a +69 return on investment. Dominguez has a very solid win percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. MISSION WRAPITUP - Had one of the most favorable Equibase Speed Figs of this group in his last race. Has to be given consideration here on the basis of the figs in the speed section alone.

                            # 1 SAN RULER 10/1
I've got to go with EXPLOSIVE HUMOUR especially at a such a nice price. I think having Reyes ride this gelding is a smart move. Ought to compete solidly in the early pace contest which bodes well with this group of horses in this race. Ought to be given a chance for this event if only for the decent speed figure posted in the last outing. INTENTIONAL WALK - Earnings per start in dirt route races is formidable for this animal. Like the finish positions in the last several contests. SAN RULER - Has respectable speed figures and has to be considered for a wager in this contest. Has performed soundly as of late in route races, posting a nifty 65 avg speed rating.

                              Zia Park - Race #7 - Post: 2:42pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,500 Class Rating: 35

                              Rating:

                              #1 SUPER HUNK (ML=4/1)

SUPER HUNK - Eliott drops him down to this class level. You don't need too much more handicapping info to figure that this animal is in a good spot at this level. Gelding took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 FORT STANTON SCOUT (ML=7/5), #5 DIRT BIKE SLADE (ML=7/2), #7 STORM THE FIRE (ML=6/1),

FORT STANTON SCOUT - Doesn't appear to have enough positive qualities to warrant the reward. DIRT BIKE SLADE - Awfully tough to bet on this runner when he hasn't been showing any fighting spirit recently. Usually I need a sprinter to have some recent success in sprint events in order to play him. This horse ran a mediocre speed fig last time around the track. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably lose in today's event running that number. STORM THE FIRE - If he goes off close to the oddsmaker's morning line of 6/1, I'll have to pass.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - SUPER HUNK - Earnings per start is a sign of class. I often play horses like this one that are utmost in the group in earnings per start.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 SUPER HUNK is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better
