Best Horse Racing Bets for Wednesday, December 8, 2021
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

Charles Town Races, Delta Downs, and Gulfstream Park gave some good underdog opportunities for my Wednesday picks.

Gulfstream was the most generous, giving us two fourth-favored picks and a second-favored pick, while Delta Dawn gave up a couple of second-favored entries along with a morning-line favorite I couldn’t ignore. And be sure not to miss the 6/1 sleeper I found at Charles Town.

You can always review the full race cards for all three tracks at our recommended online racing sites.

        Good luck!
Wednesday Picks for Charles Town Races

We’re starting with race five, a seven-furlong allowance optional claiming run on the main track for fillies and mares three years old and upward.

My money’s on the 6/1 sleeper, Take Me Home, piloted by veteran jockey Angel Cruz.

This five-year-old mare’s stats put her firmly in the driver’s seat of this nine-horse field, with 26 money finishes in 42 career starts, 16 of them wins. Not impressive enough? In 2021, she’s posted eleven money finishes in 15 starts, with eight of those wins. She’s not getting older, she’s getting better.
Ranked among the top 100 for both wins and earnings in 2020, Anthony Farrior trains Take Me Home for Bush Racing Stable.

Race six is a 6-1/2 furlong claiming run for three-year-olds and upward that have never won two races (West Virginia races not considered for eligibility). I’m banking on the third-favored (at 9/2) Never Compromise, with Arnaldo Bocachica in the irons.

This four-year-old gelding finished six of his 12 career starts in the money, winning four. In this unimpressive ten-horse field, he’s a stand-out.

Anthony Farrior trains Never Compromise for owner James C. Wolf. Farrior has tapped Bocachica to saddle Never Compromise frequently in the past year, including his most recent victory at Charles Town in early November.

Race seven is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming run on the main track for three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Ohio Class, ridden by veteran jockey Reshawn Latchman.
This four-year-old colt moneyed four of his five career starts, winning two, which puts him statistically well ahead of the rest of this eight-horse field.

Forty-year racing veteran Benjamin W. Perkins Jr. trains Ohio Class for owner Jeremiah Kane. Incidentally, jockey Reshawn Latchman is having the best year of his career.
        Wednesday’s Picks for Delta Downs

Let’s start on the main track for race two, a one-mile allowance run for Louisiana-bred three-year-olds and upward. I’m calling this one for the 7/2 second-favored Wise Guy, saddled by Joe Stokes.

This three-year-old gelding finished four of his eight career starts in the money, winning two. In this lackluster field of eight, he’s the most likely to succeed.

Allen Landry trains Wise Guy for owner Craig Drago. Jockey Stokes is currently experiencing the winningest year of his more than two decades in the irons.

Race five is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race on the main track for fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won three races. I agree with the morning line here, so I’m buying a win ticket on Russian Roulette, ridden by veteran jockey Timothy Thornton.
This five-year-old mare finished in the money 17 of her 27 career starts, winning nine, which gives her a significant head-start versus the rest of this eleven-horse field.

The top-ranked Karl Broberg trains Russian Roulette for owner Kenneth M. White.

Race eight is a seven-furlong allowance race on the main track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. If the also-eligible Misty Veil enters the starting gate, bet her and her jockey, Ty Kennedy, to win. The morning line has her at 3/1.

This three-year-old filly moneyed eight of her 12 career starts, winning two. In this 12-horse field, that makes her a superstar.

Thomas M. Amoss trains Misty Veil for owner Maggi Moss.

If Misty Veil isn’t in the running, buy a win ticket on the 9/2 underdog, Enduring Peace, with Timothy Thornton in the irons.

This three-year-old filly finished in the money five of her 13 career starts, winning three—with most of her money action occurring this year. In a more competitive race, she wouldn’t be viable, but in this one, she could make it happen.

Karl Broberg trains Enduring Peace for End Zone Athletics, Inc.
My Wednesday Picks for Gulfstream Park

We’ll start off at Gulfstream with race two, a seven-furlong claiming race on the main track for three-year-olds and upward.

The heavy favorite in this race—Life In Shambles—was regularly posting triple-digit speed figures when he was being campaigned at the stakes level back in 2018, but in 2021, not so much.

That’s why I’m skeptical he’s still got what it takes to make the morning-line’s 6/5 faith in him justifiable. Me, I’m betting on the 3/1 underdog Awesome Beach, with top jockey Paco Lopez aboard.

This three-year-old gelding moneyed five of his 16 career starts, winning three—all three of which were in 2021.

Longtime racing veteran Robert B. Hess Jr. trains Awesome Beach for owners David A Bernsen LLC and Jeffrey Lambert.

We move to the turf course for race five, a one-mile claiming race for three-year-olds and upward that have never won two races. I’m betting both of my dollars on the fourth-favored (at 5/1) Bohemian Boy, with Edwin Gonzalez aboard.
I like a horse that graduates the maiden class his first (and only) start, and that’s just what this three-year-old gelding did back in January. He hasn’t raced since then, probably waiting for the rest of this eleven-horse field to catch up.

The favorite, for example, took eight attempts to break out of the maiden class. That certainly says something, but I don’t think it’s “winning.”

Hall of Famer Mark E. Casse trains Bohemian Boy for Ironhorse Racing Stable LLC.

We’re back on the main track for race six, a one-mile allowance optional claiming race for Florida-bred three-year-olds and upward. I’m calling this one for the 4/1 underdog, Man of Vision, ridden by Corey J. Lanerie.

This four-year-old colt finished eleven of his 15 career starts in the money, winning five. More pertinently, he’s won nearly as many races this year than the rest of this short field of six combined (Man of Vision: 3, the other five: 4).

Longtime racing veteran Peter R. Walder trains Man of Vision for EKB Stables.

                          NBA | Wizards vs Pistons
Play on: Wizards -5 -110 at Caesars

My free play is on the Was Wizards at 7:10 ET.
The Detroit Pistons began the season coming off a two-year record of 40-98 (.290) AND Cade Cunningham, the top pick in the 2021 draft. The Pistons welcome the Wizards to Detroit tonight, owners of the NBA worst record (4-19), as well as the league's longest active losing streak (NINE in a row). The Wizards check in at 14-11 but a closer look reveals that after a 10-3 start, the Wizards enter having gone just 4-8 in their last 12 games.
Washington enters on a three-game slide, after losing 116-110 at Indiana on Monday despite 34 points from Bradley Beal. The All-Star guard had not reached the 20-point mark in his previous four games. Guards Beal (22.5-4.7-5.9) and Dinwiddie (13.4-4.9-5.2) are the 'heart' of the team but a trio I like to call "Lakers-East," have been MAJOR additions. PF Harrell (15.6 & 8.2), SF Kuzma (12,4 & 8.4) and swingman Caldwell-Pope (11,4) have really found a home on the East Coast. Undersized center, the 6-9 Gafford, is averaging 9.0 & 6.0.
Detroit's starting lineup is composed of 2021 No. 1 draft pick Cade Cunningham, three second-year players, and forward Jerami Grant. The Pistons looked like they'd end their losing streak against Oklahoma City in their last outing, after they scored 37 points in the first quarter and led by 18 in the second. However, the Thunder rallied in the final quarter, taking the lead with a 13-0 outburst, pulling away from a 114-103 win. Cunningham posted his best statistical night of the season with 28 points, 11 rebounds and five assists but also committed six turnovers. PF Grant (20.1 & 4.8) is the team's leading scorer, with Cunningham checking with a line of 14.9-6.6-4.6 SF Bey (12.4 & 6.1) plus center Olynyk (12.5 & 5.3) join Cunningham and Grant in double digits but Olynyk is sidelined for at least six weeks with a MCL sprain.
The point spread tends to be the "great equalizer" and in Detroit's case it is, as despite the team's 4-19 SU record, the Pistons are 11-12 ATS. However, this is NOT a spot to play Detroit, coming off a blown opportunity for a win, while the much more talented Wizards are looking to break a three game skid. Lay the points with the road fave!
                          Good luck...Larry

                            NBA | Bulls vs Cavs
Play on: Cavs -2½ -104 at pinnacle

The Bulls and Cavaliers have been two of the major success stories at the quarter mark of this NBA season. Chicago leads the Central Division at 17-8. Cleveland has the second-best spread mark in the NBA behind only Golden State at 18-7 ATS.
So why get involved with a side in this matchup of two play-on teams?
Two major reasons. The Cavaliers are in a good situational spot and the Bulls' rotation is down key contributors greatly stretching their depth.
Chicago enters this matchup fat and happy having won four in a row with the latest being a satisfying, 109-97, home win against the Nuggets this past Monday. The Bulls accomplished that minus their leading scorer, DeMar DeRozan. He's going to miss this game, too, because of COVID-19 safety protocols. The Bulls also are down guards Coby White (illness) and Alex Caruso (hamstring).
That leaves the Bulls with a starting lineup of Nikola Vucevic, Zach LaVine, Lonzo Ball, Derrick Jones Jr. and rookie Ayo Dosunmu, while elevating the minutes of Troy Brown Jr., Tony Bradley and formerly seldom-used Matt Thomas.
This is not a strong rotation. The Cavaliers have improved to the point where they can exploit that especially being back home. Cleveland is on a two-game losing streak. Note, though, those defeats occurred to the Jazz by one point and to the Bucks. Previously, the Cavaliers had won four in a row with the last three of those victories coming on the road against Wizards, Heat and Mavericks.
The Cavaliers can hurt the Bulls inside with their underrated front line of Jarrett Allen, former Bull Lauri Markkanen and good-looking roobie Evan Mobley. Darius Garland has played great stepping up for injured Collin Sexton in the backcourt.
Cleveland gives up the second-fewest points per game in the NBA at 102.4. The Bulls are going to have problems denting this defense without DeRozan and his 26.4 points per game. I don't see where the Bulls make up for that. I also see the Cavaliers, especially Markkanen, being the more motivated team.
The oddsmaker agrees, opening Cleveland a short favorite despite the Bulls having the superior record and being on a four-game win streak. The oddsmaker has it right.
