Wednesday CBB Free play. My selection is on the 'under' between Cal-State Bakersfield vs. Abilene Christian at 8:30 pm et on Wednesday.
This game features two teams that are built on the strength of their defenses and I'm anticipating a relatively low-scoring affair. CSUB has scored 64 points or less in four of its seven games so far this season. However, it has managed to win five of those seven games thanks to limiting opponents to under 40% shooting. The Roadrunners are a team that likes to run their offense in the halfcourt rather than simply hoisting up threes. In fact, they average just four made threes per game. They're also averaging only 11 made free throws per contest. They were forced to go small in their last game against Idaho and managed only 59 points on 41% shooting. They should be in a similar situation against the Wildcats here and I expect them to struggle to find easy baskets once again. Abilene Christian of course gained national attention by beating number three seed Texas in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament last March. The Wildcats lost some of their scoring punch from that team but remain a terrific defensive squad giving up just under 64 points per game on 40% shooting while forcing a whopping 23 turnovers per game on their way to a 6-2 start to the season. While they are averaging north of 80 points per game that's largely been on the strength of a number of games against much weaker defensive opponents. They're actually shooting 46% against teams that allow an average of 47% shooting this season. Take the under.

The Portland Pilots entered this season enduring six straight seasons of losing basketball. The Pilots did something about that after last season hiring Shantay Legans, who coached Eastern Washington to the NCAA Tournament last season while establishing himself as one of the up-and-coming coaches.
Legans is making a huge difference so far at Portland as the Pilots are 8-3.
Despite this it's doubtful Oregon gets too excited about this West Coast Conference opponent. Not after the Ducks just played their first two Pac-12 games and host top-ranked Baylor on Saturday. It's a major lookahead spot for Oregon, who have failed to cover seven of its last eight games.
Portland has covered in all five of its road/neutral site games this season.
The Ducks are not built to cover huge spreads because of the slow pace they play at. They also rank 319th in defensive two-point percentage.
The Pilots are the fourth-best free throw shooting team in the nation knocking down 81 percent of their free throws.
The combination of Oregon's slow tempo, Portland's outstanding free throw shooting ability and excellent coaching plus the Ducks' look-ahead matchup to Baylor leads me to believe the Pilots can stay within this large point spread.

The Sacramento Kings are playing at a breakneck pace of late. The OVER is 7-3 in their last 10 games overall with seven of those games seeing 225 or more combined points. I fully expect the Kings and Wizards to top this 225-point total tonight.
The OVER is 6-1 in Wizards last seven games overall, so they will have no problem obliging the Kings in an up-tempo game. Sacramento ranks 3rd in the NBA in pace this season and will control the tempo playing at home. The Kings are 26th in defensive efficiency, while the Wizards rank 19th in this category.
Five of the last six meetings between the Kings and Wizards have seen 228 or more combined points with none going to overtime. They have averaged 236 combined points per game in those six meetings, which is 11 points more than tonight's posted total of 225. Bet the OVER in this game Wednesday.
