Villanova head coach Jay Wright owns two national titles (2016 and 2018) and coming off a Sweet 16 appearance last season with four starters coming back, opened the year as the AP's 4th-ranked team. Xavier's Travis Steele enters the 2021-22 season badly in need of a 20-win season. He took over from Chris Mack (23.9 wins per season with NINE straight Big Dance bids), who took over from Sean Miller (24 wins per season and NCAA bids in his last four seasons of his five-year stint). The Musketeers entered the season having won just 51 games (17 per) in Steele's first three seasons, without an NCAA bid.


Tonight's meeting at Villanoza features a 7-4 Wildcat team looking to avoid a THIRD straight loss! The 'Cats somehow remained in the AP top-25 (at No. 23) this past Monday but will need a win tonight over a Xavier team that has jumped out to an 11-1 start and will be looking for an EIGHTH straight win. The Musketeers' lone loss came back on Nov 24 to an Iowa St team that's 11-0 and ranked No. 9. Xavier is currently ranked 18th in the latest poll.


Guard Scruggs (10.8-4.3-4.2) is only back because COVID gave him an extra year of eligibility but fellow guard Jones has been a HUGE surprise, averaging 12.4 & 8.2, after chipping in a modest 7.7 & 4.8 last year. Nate Johnson averages a team-high 13.3 points. The team's top frontcourt players are the 7-0 Nunge (13.0 & 7.8), the 6-9 Freemantle (8.7 & 4.7) and the 6-8 Hunter (5.8 & 6.7).


Wright is going with a basic six-man rotation so far this season. Collin Gillespie has fully recovered from an MCL injury that ended his 2020-21 campaign early. He leads the Wildcats in scoring with 16.4 PPG. Fellow guard Justin Moore adds 14.7 &5.0) and Daniels chips in 8.9 & 3.9. Up front, it's the 6-7 Slater (11.2 & 3.7), the 6-7 Samuels (11.0 & 6.4) and the 6-8 Dixon (7.9 & 5.9).


Yes, Wright gave his team a tough schedule early on but losing FOUR games through 11 starts is NOT representative of a team ranked No. 4 at the start of the season. Is Xavier as good as its 11-1 start? We will find out tonight. I'll admit to a little 'chasing' with Villanova but will give them one more chance here to finally have a breakout game. Lay the points.

This is just too many points to pass up with Davidson, as the number here should be closer to 6. This Wildcats team has the playmakers offensively to hang with Alabama and if they get hot from deep, they could definitely pull off the upset here. I'll lay the 15.5-points with the Tar Heels at home against Appalachian State. The Mountaineers just played at Duke last Thursday and lost 67-92 and that was after the game was basically tied with 10 minutes to go in the 1st half.
I don't see it going any better against North Carolina, especially with a pissed off Tar Heels team taking the floor for the first time following Saturday's ugly 69-98 loss to Kentucky on a neutral court. It's also the last game for UNC before a week off leading up to the start of ACC play.
I see this being a game the Tar Heels want to show out and I just don't think there's anything Appalachian State can do to prevent his from being a blowout. Give me the Tar Heels -15.5!

Iona has played the MUCH tougher schedule with 8 of their 11 opponents to date landing inside the top 200 and 3 sitting inside the top 55. With that in mind, their 9-2 record is quite impressive. They have a win over Alabama and their 2 losses have come vs Kansas & Belmont. The Gaels have 6 wins over teams ranked inside the top 175. Delaware has faced ONE team this year ranked inside the top 100 and only 3 teams sitting inside the top 150. They are 0-3 in those games. Since losing @ Temple back on November 27th, the Blue Hens have played teams ranked 357, 301, 255, and 236 (and a . Their average winning margin in those games vs poor competition was just +9 PPG. They are 9-3 in the season, so a worse record than Iona despite playing one of the easiest schedules in the nation. Iona has the much better defensive team (74th in efficiency compared to 211th) and the better rebounding team. They defend the 3 point line as well as anyone ranking 17th nationally in that category. Big coaching advantage here as well with Rick Pitino running the show for Iona. We like the Gaels to cover here.

My “Cutting Room Floor” plays are the situations I considered the closest to being worthy of investment but did not make the “final cut” for my official plays today for subscribers. The last play I cut for Tuesday was with Under the Total in the game between the San Diego State Aztecs and the UTSA Roadrunners in the Frisco Bowl. UTSA (12-1) won the Conference USA Championship Game with a 49-41 upset win against Western Kentucky as a 3.5-point underdog on December 3rd. The Under is 12-3-1 in the Roadrunners last 16 games after a point spread win. The Under is 5-2-1 in UTSA’s last 8 games after scoring at least 40 points in their last game. San Diego State (11-2) had their four-game winning streak end in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game with a 46-13 upset loss to Utah State as a 6.5-point favorite. The Aztecs have played 22 of their last 29 games Under the Total after failing to score more than 20 points in their last game. I'm not sure how the New York Knicks can be this big of a favorite against anyone with how poorly they are playing right now due to all they are missing. The Knicks are just 2-8 SU in their last 10 games overall. They are going to be without Obi Toppin, RJ Barrett, Kevin Knox, Immanuel Quickley, Quentin Grimes and possibly Derrick Rose tonight. The Pistons are coming off a 10-point upset win over the Miami Heat and can hang with the depleted Knicks tonight.
