Turfway Park, owned by Churchill Downs Inc., is back for more winter racing on its Tapeta track. Full fields and a tough handicapping nut to crack are in order for each race they card! Have a go ...

At Horseracing.net/us we have you covered, including all of the action! It is a good time for some of the best that North American racing has to offer. Stay tuned!

If you're looking for picks elsewhere around the country this Thursday be sure to check out our free Horse Racing Picks via the gold button below.

Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Junior Bug #3, 3/1):

I have been espousing the abilities of former jockey-turned-trainer Brittany Vanden Berg for some time. At Arlington, she always had well-backed runners at the window, and she earned the respect of her fellow conditioners. Those folks are not a cadre that is easily impressed. I like the record, and form of this gelding by Tapiture. He can add to his 2 wins in 13 career starts by relying on speed and stamina late in the game. He already has a win over the track, and a nice speed gig to boot. Since 2020, this one has shipped from Delaware to Laurel to the Fair Grounds to Canterbury to Arlington to Hawthrone, and then he landed at Turfway. I feel like Howard Dean … I think a win is coming as Chris Landeros, a superb rider, gets the call.

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #3

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Betterlookout #10, 15/1):

The day’s value play is this 2-yr-old filly that is destined to be a 3-yr-old filly very soon. This is her 1st time out, and for that reason many will shy away. I am after a different angle though. She has 3 points in her favor … John Ortiz … Rey Gutierrez … Distorted Humor. The trainer-jockey team has worked well in the past, and with Oaklawn/Fair Grounds dark, it gives Gutierrez a place to hone his trade. He is aggressive, and Ortiz, when he is not wowing the crowds in Hot Springs, is an accomplished conditioner elsewhere. I like Distorted Humor as a sire, and this one has some good blood running through her veins. The price will be more than adequate, especially considering this field. I think there could be some major upside. Let’s roll …

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #10 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: AW, 1 Mile, ALLW63k, F&M 3+):

The Kentucky-based trainers are out in force for this ALLW Co. contest (only 3-yr-old fillies are drawn). It looks like a good bunch, and includes Kenny McPeek, Brad Cox, and Dale Romans. Plus, we also have Ben Colebrook, Mark Casse (HOF-er), and Paulo Lobo ready to play. With a 12-horse field, this is a Turfway constant … betting options aplenty. Let’s break it down … My sense is that Brad Cox has the inside track with a pair of very different runners. Dreamful #5 is brand new to his stable (joined in Oct.), but Cox is strong when it comes to finding the right spot, 1st out. He must see this as a race to put her in because she has “turf” lines through Kitten’s Joy (AW is similar), and her class rating looks promising. She came to the US for Michael Dubb from running on the AW in Ireland, so that could be a plus. The able-bodied Gerardo Corrales is up (leading jock). As for the other half of the uncoupled entry, Color of Dawn #11, this filly by Exaggerator was just out of her league last time at Churchill Downs. She is way more talented than the result—7th, 16-lengths back. Dropping in class, and switching surfaces to Turfway’s rubberized road, could do the trick with Rey Gutierrez in the irons. As for those that will oppose this Cox pair, I would not count out McPeek’s Surrelist #4, who although did not paint much of a picture back at Churchill, was certainly competitive in MSW Co. dating back to Sept-Oct (i.e KEE/CD/KD). Ferrin Peterson has not had a very good start, but this one might be a game-changer. As for Romans’ entry, Temper Time #6 looks formidable, especially after she won impressively in Louisville by a whopping 13-lengths going a 1 Mile on the MT. If she can switch to this ground, and run like that with Joe Talmo back aboard, then she wins easily. The class hike will not be easy, and she is facing a tougher field here. One other router that looks inviting is from the Dickinson Barn … how about the lightly-raced Belle Belisa #1? Out of super turf sire Lope De Vega, I like her trainer’s numbers in a spot like this one. She is 3rd off-the-bench, and she was up against some tough AQU turfers in Evie Jets and Sport Model last time. Her show placement in that race was promising. In the end, she is going to be my “key” horse, with Joe Rocco in the saddle, and then I am going to roll the rest that I already mentioned (including Colebrook’s Ice Queen #7, Casse’s Alydiva #9, and Lobo’s Poca Mucha #10) underneath for a tasty Superfecta. That should get the job done, and cash us a great ticket!

            Wagering Recommendation: .10 Superfecta Wheel, 1 w 4/5/6/7/9/10/11 w 4/5/6/7/9/10/11 w 4/5/6/7/9/10/11

Daily Horse Racing Tips – Gulfstream Park – 23rd December 2021

NAP Holding Court (7:58 Gulfstream Park)
Next Best Creative Cloud (8:28 Gulfstream Park)
Other Susans Novela (8:59 Gulfstream Park)
              Court to break maiden

The Will Take Charge filly Holding Court looks capable of getting off the mark at the second time of asking in the sixth race on the Gulfstream Park card, a six furlong claiming contest for Florida-bred two-year-old fillies on the main track.

The selection showed plenty of ability when racing from off the pace prior to delivering a three-quarters-of-a-length second place finish in a maiden claimer over this distance at Churchill Downs when debuting last month.

The form of that contest looks decent enough with the fourth home Practice Squad scoring in a maiden special weight at Fair Grounds subsequently.

The switch to racing against her own sex here is a positive, while she has demonstrated her wellbeing with a couple of solid works at Palm Meadows Training Centre this month, including a 1:02 five furlong work on the 12th.

Trainer Brian Lynch boasts a good 22% strike-rate (2/9) with a further three on the board finishers at this meeting so far and his representative here looks the pick.

              Cloud in claimer

All seven of Creative Cloud’s previous starts have come at this venue with the last five of those coming on the main track here.

The only victory in those five outings came when pulling four lengths clear of his rivals in a maiden claimer over six furlongs back in April, while since then he has been asked to tackle longer distances, including when third over seven furlongs in an allowance contest next time out.

Edwin Gonzalez’s mount gets a welcome drop back to six furlongs here following three starts over a mile, with the most recent of those resulting in a fourth place finish when beaten eight-and-a-quarter-lengths in a starter optional claimer here in October.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr heads into this contest with an impressive 21% strike-rate (12/56) at this meeting and, following a number of works here in the last month, the selection can return from a short break with a victory on his first start over this distance since breaking his maiden in April.

              Novela can complete double

Scratched when set to tackle a five furlong claimer here earlier this month, Susans Novela looks capable of completing a double having followed up a sixth place finish over five-and-one-half-furlongs here on debut in September with a neck victory over the same course and distance in a $16,000 maiden claiming race last month.

The daughter of Constitution tackles a stronger contest here but it’s notable that she raced just behind the speed last time out and looks capable of employing similar tactics here with Miracle Drug and Rock Along, both drawn inside the selection and likely to want to race from the front.

Steve Klesaris’ charge has the services of Paco Lopez for this contest and the selection here can help the pair improve on their 25% strike-rate when teaming up together.

Lia Marina (right) wins the Wait a While Stakes at Gulfstream Park
Ryan Thompson/Coglianese PhotosFirst post for Gulfstream racing is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:30 GP 1st Are we gonna get some value for WE'VE HAD ENOUGH (#8, 9-2)? She has synth experience and goes second time locally. Considering the slow start, wasn't her most recent better than it looks? A jock switch for a horse that often breaks poorly is a good thing as at this point we want anything different. Drawing outside might help also. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:19 TAM 3rd RIPLEY EFFECT (#2, 8-1) is by a 6% debut sire (2YO's only). Her dam went 11-3-0-2 and banked 28K. Lone sib is 9-2-0-3 and earned 43K. October 3rd work at Monmouth which was 2nd best of 38 tips hand. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:59 GP 8th SUSANS NOVELA (#8, 6-1) has tactical speed, draws better, and goes second time this surface. Just putting races together is a plus. This barn is 24% with their 2YO's and 32% on the synth. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:28 TUP 5th DOUGS PAL (#4, 8-1) comes in fresh and with sharp works. Canadian invader loves a shortened sprint at 5-2-2-0. This gelding should be fully acclimated to here. Others may be quicker but this gelding won't be that far off the early pace. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:32 GP 9th HEADLINE HUNTER (#3, 8-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Scott Ehlers). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:05 GP 10th CINDY'S SONG (#8, 9-2) will try and steal this on the drop down. Distance breeding says she has a good shot and we like Sutherland up. -Scott Ehlers | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs for December 23, 2021

Christmas week racing continues today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Tampa Bay Downs again, which has another great card. We will be covering Tampa Bay Downs and Gulfstream Park all week long leading up to Christmas for the paid rockets. Happy Holidays everyone!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Tampa Bay Downs:

                  Tampa Bay December 23, 2021

                  Race 6: Maiden Claiming

#1 Shes Astylish Katz keeps getting closer and closer to breaking her maiden at this level. The slight cut back in distance should help today. #7 Lovin My Sweet T is a first time starter for a barn that does well with debut runners. Diaz jumping aboard is also a good sign.

                  Race 7: Allowance

#9 American dOro has been facing tougher leading up to this race. This trainer and jockey combination has great numbers when they hook up. #2 Fly Like an Eagle runs off a long layoff in this spot; however, he showed talent in both of his previous efforts. We will see if he has improved since his last start.

                  Race 8: Maiden Special Weight

#6 Provocateur moves to Tampa Bay today after a fourth place effort at Belmont Park today. He has plenty of early speed, so look for him to go to the front and try to take them gate to wire today. #5 Dubrovnik is a first time starter with solid workouts leading up to this race. Thomas is also very good with first time starters.

                  Race 9: Claiming

#9 Donyas Magic nearly won last time out, setting the pace, before losing late by less than a length. She looks to be the lone speed in todays race as well. #6 Zerenia will look to make it two in a row today after a nice victory last time out at this level and over this race track.

                  THE TICKET

                  $.50 Pick 4 (Races 6-9) 1,2,5,7 / 2,9 / 5,6,10 / 2,6,7,9 – $48

Al Cimaglia: Mohawk Late Pick 4 Analysis & Hi-5 Strategy

                      December 23, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia

Tonight, at Woodbine Mohawk Park, there will be a mandatory Holiday Jackpot Hi-5 payout in Race 12. There is a $489,248 carryover and the 0.20 Hi-5 has a 15% takeout for new money bet into the pool.

My strategy for the Hi-5 will be to fade the morning line chalk 6-Swift Ally (3-1) and use 3-Woodmere Skyroller (4-1) and 5-Lady Rocknrolla A (5-1) at the top of the ticket. My two price shots to use underneath will be the 1-Nectar (15-1) and #12-Tuggingoncredit (15-1).

If the morning line choice catches fire on the drop and reverts to the form of 2-years ago my ticket will be toast. But 0-33 over the last 2 years and not being involved in a betting race since 7-16 prevents me from keying this filly in the top slot despite winning her qualifier. There are endless possibilities in the 12-horse field and your bet size will be determined by your bankroll.

The 0.20 Late Pick 4 begins in Race 9, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                      0.20 Late Pick 4

                      Race 9

2-Addictivebehaviour (5/2)-This filly was all business in her 3rd lifetime start, got on the point and didn't look back. Should be in line for a good trip and looks like a major threat for an encore.
3-Windy Report (3-1)-Although finishing 2nd to the one above last week, my guess is the connections were very pleased. Raced from the back and was 10 lengths behind. Paced the 2nd half in 57.1 and passed some down the lane. Should be closer to the top throughout.

                      Race 10

2-Catch An Ace (5/2)-Went off at 31-1 and left alertly in last but was caught inside behind a horse with no pace. Did finish well with a .56 back half. Looking for a better trip and should be a player if that happens.
4-Amas Arion (7/2)-Started slowly in the Pop Up Final and fell 3/4 of a length short although pacing the 2nd half in .55 flat. Left from post 9 last time, this post draw should help and gets a positive driver change as McNair takes the lines.
6-Shes A Sassy Beach (9/2)-This year's 1-24 record is cause for pause but has been facing tough company. Jamieson is between the pipes, and he should be aggressive versus this kind. Looking for a big try at a solid price.

                      Race 11

5-Blonde Onthe Beach (5/2)-There have been gaps in this gal's schedule going back to October and now comes back in sequence. This 3-year-old was purchased for $87k on 11-12 and will be making the 3rd start for the Ben B barn. Last week's trip wasn't the best and Henry should put her in play. This is also the 2nd time for Lasix and could be sitting on a big try.
7-Best Keepsake (7/2)-Came 2nd as a beaten chalk last week at the NW4 level and should make the most of this drop. Got on the engine in last which isn't the usual plan and now comes back in sequence. Sorrie has options, could look to get the point or come off cover, either plan could lead to a picture.

                      Race 12-Jackpot Hi-5

3-Woodmere Skyroller (4-1)-This mare is a high percentage winner taking pictures in over 33% of lifetime starts. Raced well in last but did fade down the lane. But will excuse as was used hard to sweep to the top into quick fractions. The post draw should help and could be rounding back into sharp form.
5-Lady Rocknrolla A (5-1)-Blasted out last week from post 9 and got the top in a 26.4 opening quarter. Raced evenly after that to finish 4th but did post a .28 last quarter. If Drury wants to get on the point, there isn't much gate speed inside. Fits with this crew and this race could set-up nicely for the Auciello trainee.

                      $1.00 Pick 4
                      2,3/2,4,6/5,7/3,5

                      Total Bet=$24.00

GULFSTREAM PARK – FOURTH RACE (Post time: 1:58 ET)

The first-timer Firenspice was quite impressive breezing a furlong in 10 1/5 seconds at the OBS June sale – she was green but displayed quick action and a nice stride – before bringing $60,000 through the ring and also looked quite good in a team drill around dogs over the local lawn earlier this month when she drew clear from her workmate without being asked. The daughter of Uncaptured debuts in a maiden ($50,000) optional claimer (she’s a Florida-bred so she can’t be claimed) over the Tapeta surface in a six-runner field in which the known element doesn’t impress. Listed at 4-1 on the morning line but almost certain to go lower, she’s a win play at a reasonable price and logical rolling exotic single for a barn that has strong stats with debut runners.

GULFSTREAM PARK – NINTH RACE (Post time: 4:32 ET)

The main concern with Mamba Wamba is that five furlongs around tight turns on turf might be a tad sharp for her U.S. debut, but if she can stay within range to the head of the lane the English import should be able to outclass this first-level allowance turf group of fillies and mares. Beaten just a half-length in a valuable handicap when last seen at Ascot in August, she arrives with a resume that shows a couple of listed stakes placings against infinitely tougher competition and a career top Timeform Rating of 98 that makes her the one to beat. A sharp recent grass drill around dogs (:59b) should have her cranked up and as a first-time Lasix user the B. Lynch-trained 3-year-old appears extremely well meant. There is wagering value to be had at or near her morning line of 5-1 if you can get it.

                          Delta Downs - Race #5
                          Picks Notes
#8 In For a Penny Several career maidens are signed up tonight, and this one at least has some upside on the move around two turns in her sixth lifetime start -- pretty fresh by this race's standards. She should be able to handle the added ground, and she brings a bit of tactical ability with her.
#5 Palm Court She steps up into special weight company, but she's coming out of a couple of okay maiden claimers at Churchill, and her best stuff stacks up favorably here. Underlay?
#6 Turf Dancer Her dirt tries have both been solid, and she's quick enough to get in the mix early at this kind of trip. She already proved she could handle this two-turn run here when third two starts back, and she doesn't feel impossible here.
Race Summary In For a Penny has shown some ability to pass horses and brings enough pedigree with her to get this short two-turn trip. Could see her landing a really nice trip just spying the pace from close range.

                          Delta Downs - Race #8
                          Picks Notes
#3 Extirpator Think he might have a claim on this at a decent price, as he has some back form that fits, and he's capable of something better than he showed last time out. Forward player fits with his best.
#8 Gotta Go He's a 10-time winner with room to come forward in this second start off a bit of a break, and he should be able to land a first-over trip that gives him every chance into the far turn.
#9 Sarcastic Tone He moved up nicely on the front end when sent two turns here last out, and he knows how to pass horses, too. Versatile type might have another step forward in him with the right trip.
Race Summary Extirpator should be a decent price after a couple tries that were a bit underwhelming compared to his overall form, but he has historically done some pretty good work here, so maybe he comes alive at a mid-range number.

                          Delta Downs - Race #9
                          Picks Notes
#5 Paralissfrmanalyss He has some room to move forward in this first start off the claim, and his form at this kind of trip and level has been pretty solid in the last couple starts. Thinking his baseline makes him the right one.
#7 Smoky Topaz Tactical player is a main threat in here, but this is his 14th lifetime start, so he's thin on excuses at this point in time. There's a real chance he gets his first win today, but I wouldn't want to sign up for too short a price.
#3 Lone Star Express He steps up a bit from that plunge to $5,000 last time out, but he has slowly been heading in the right direction through three starts and may be able to build on an improved effort last out.
Race Summary Paralissfrmanalyss may be able to improve for the new barn, and he's a threat based on his existing form. Think he'll be able to get the best of Smoky Topaz, and I'd want to have Lone Star Express on my tickets at a price, too.

#7 DOT DOT DOT DASH Quick move to lead, second best, steps up in class.
#5 ANGRY EYES Piling up the checks at this level, driver's choice of two.
#2 TOP FLIGHT ANGEL Hit board twice at Meadowlands before post 9 assignment.
Race Summary Dot Dot Dot Dash is worth a longshot stab, or at least a use on all gimmick wagers. He made a quick brush to the lead, picked up the pace in the third quarter and held second at a notch below. Play a 2-5-7 exacta box.

                            Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #10
                            Picks Notes
#4 AMASA ARION Trapped most of way, close with a rush between.
#1 MISS ROCKADALI Can control pace a long way from the rail.
#2 CATCH AN ACE First or second in 38 of 97 starts, projects ideal trip.
Race Summary Amasa Arion took back off the gate, was trapped 4-deep on the rail, finished full of run to join a blanket finish. She led on the gallop out but went off stride. Play 4-1 and 4-2 exactas.

                            The Meadows - Race #1
                            Picks Notes
#5 MY FRISKIE BOY Figures close-up, could spring upset off the claim.
#1 DREAMS ARE TRUE First or second in last five starts, re-claimed.
#4 SOUTHERN FLIGHT No factor in latest, won the last time Merriman drove.
Race Summary My Friskie Boy chased the 2-to-5 favorite before fading in the stretch. The raced timed two seconds faster than the other division, so he's worth a bet. Play 5-1 and 5-4 exactas.

#1 Kissing Frogs Just missed last out at Aqueduct and can get the candy if she runs back to that one; can benefit from the ground-saving trip and from slightly off the lead.
#5 Whimsical Muse Ran on for third in a starter stkes last out and has the class to be a strong player again.
#2 Mirabell Mei Has been in some tough races and was a closing fourth in her latest; late threat.
Race Summary Kissing Frogs ran on well last time and could get the jump on the closers.
