Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis-$20,000 Guaranteed Pool

    December 26, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia

Cal Expo has a 12-race card scheduled with the Pick 4 starting in Race 8. The sequence has a $20,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8

2-More More More (4-1)-Took control in last and was on the point for most of the mile before finishing 2nd. That was the 1st start at this level and was in too tough in the previous 2 CalX races. Should be in play from the start and was Lackey's pick over #7.
4-Gene Eugene (6-1)-This classification is for non-winners in 2021, Gene is 0 for the last 2 years and so are a couple of others. Roland will steer, did pace the back in 56.3 and should be closer to the lead turning for home.
5-Native's Best Bet (3-1)-Basically took a tour of the track last week staying inside in a needed start. Should be in the hunt versus this crew and will look for an aggressive try.

    Race 9

3-Northbrook Ron (5-1)-Gets some needed post relief after being used hard from post 7 to get on the point. Cashed a 3rd place check after the trip took its toll. Has been good in all 4 CalX starts and will respect chances tonight.
4-Hay Hay Alright (12-1)-Rolled the back half in 56.2 to rally from 8th place for a picture. Not sure why the morning line is 12-1 and doubt that will be the price. But should offer some value and is racing well.
5-Western Devil (7/2)-Beat 5 from this group last week and started from post 8. Has the gate speed to get a close-up seat again and should be a main player.

    Race 10

2-Brooklyn Moonshine (10-1)-Plano is back between the pipes and will be steering his own. This mare has hit the board in 24 of 45 CalX starts and has taken 9 pictures. Will look for a trip-out win at a juciy price.
5-Shes A Showstopper (3-1)-If minds manners, this 3-year-old filly should be in the mix at the wire. Stewart is steering for the 2nd straight time, and he kept her attention last week.
6-Oneida Blue Chip (5/2)-Not crazy about a short price but should fit well in the 4th local start and this will be the 3rd race after an injured scratch. Plested should have this mare dialed on high and Svendsen could come off cover and rally down the lane.

    Race 11

1-Lickcreek Speedway (5/2)-Team Kennedy entry does well at CalX hitting the board in 28 of 51 starts with 12 pictures. Makes its 3rd local start and should be in line for an efficient trip. Has been trying hard and could get rewarded if the fractions are honest.
5-Go Away N Play (5/2)-Raced well from post 8 in last, was impeded down the lane and now gets a ++ driver change with Plano taking the lines. Plano took a picture on 11-19 with this mare taking charge by the half and not looking back. The same script could be in play here.

    0.20 Pick 4

    2,4,5/3,4,5/2,5,6/1,5
    Total Bet=$10.80

What You Need to Know - December 26, 2021

      December 26, 2021

Jeff Siegel’s “What Your Need to Know”

GULFSTREAM PARK – SIXTH RACE (Post time: 2:28 ET)

Strong Light gets the worst of the draw again – he’ll leave from the extreme outside post position in a middle distance affair with a very short run into the clubhouse turn – but the promising juvenile has a chance to simply outclass this field after finishing a very promising third in his debut at Churchill Downs last month despite losing many more lengths in ground that he was beaten by. The son of Brody’s Cause was fanned extremely wide into the clubhouse turn and into the backstretch, remained far wide when launching his best bid entering the lane, yet kept on coming before simply running out of room. Ignored on the tote at 29-1 in that race, the Dale Romans-trained colt should receive more than his fair share of play today, and with any kind of decent racing luck should be able to produce a winning late bid. He’s a worth a gamble at or near his morning line of 7/2.

      *

FAIR GROUNDS – TENTH RACE (Post time: 4:35 ET)

Either Cocktail Moments was extremely well-hidden in the morning by her connections or she simply ran in on them when the daughter of Uncle Mo – completely untouched in the wagering at 26-1 – annihilated her stunned foes with a devastating late kick that produced a nine length maiden debut score at Churchill Downs last month. The victory was no fluke, as this Ken McPeek-trained two year old won despite a very wide trip from off the pace in a performance that was almost Zenyatta-like. Today we’ll find out what she’s really made when she tackles more seasoned rivals in the Untapable Stakes around two turns. Listed at 3-1 on the morning line, she’ll offer excellent value at that price if she can come close to verifying her initial impression.

Frank Carulli: Laurel Park Late Pick 4 | Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021

        December 26, 2021 | By Frank Carulli

Laurel Park will spread some more holiday cheer on the day after Christmas. The Sunday, Dec. 26, card features six $100,000 races, three as part of a Late Pick 4.

Xpressbet and 1/ST BET will offer up to a $10 money-back special on all win bets Dec. 26 at Laurel Park if your selection finishes second or third. Also, players enjoy 10X Xpressbet Wager Rewards Points on all bets at Laurel Park between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1.

Here's a look at the Pick 4 races and a suggested ticket for the 50-cent wager:

LEG A (6th race, 2:50 EST): With some price plays later in the Pick 4 sequence, going to hit the 'ALL' button in the opening leg. NEWBOMB, a 6F allowance winner at Saratoga and Belmont in the fall, deserves a good look after he jostled with favorite Cost Basis (3-11, $202k) in the stretch and gamely held on to win two starts back. WHERESHETOLDMETOGO is an obvious contender, winning his last four stakes tries at Laurel Park, three in a photo finish.

LEG B (7th race, 3:20 EST): Five horses reunite from the November 13 race won by favored MISS LESLIE, who rallied 5-wide into the stretch on a day when high and wide closers dominated. At 48-1 odds, VILLANELLE might have run the best race of the group. She broke sluggishly, lacked room while saving ground on the final turn and finished with interest for third. SMOOTH WITH A KICK was 12/3-2-3 on the main track for four-time Eclipse Awared-winning trainer Chad Brown, mostly in allowance company. She starts off an 11-month layoff for the high-percentage barn of Brittany Russell and is a must use on the ticket.

LEG C (8th race, 3:50 EST): WORKIN ON A DREAM has come back running after four months away. She romped in a 5-horse allowance, then held second in a $100k stakes race after a hard duel from mid-turn to mid-stretch. CORDMAKER sat the perfect trip off the duel en route to his third stakes route victory this year. PLOT THE DOTS needed his last race and gets plenty of pace to rally into as a longshot play.

LEG D (9th race, 4:20 EST): Using two layoff horses in the final leg. GALLINELLA draws outside and cuts back in distance for her first start in 10 months, but she packs late wallop, worked in 1:01.3 from the Pimlico gate earlier this month and is a good fit in this field. TEQUILA FOG ran second in a $16,000 claiming race at Laurel Park three months ago and the winner, Unrequited Love (5-18, $137k), won a starter allowance in her most recent start.

        Laurel Park Late Pick 4:

        Leg A: ALL
        Leg B: 1,6
        Leg C: 1,8,9
        Leg D: 7,9

        Cost for a 50-cent ticket: $48

Jerry Shottenkirk: Golden Gate Late Pick 4 | Sunday, December 26

          December 26, 2021 | By Jerry Shottenkirk

The holiday spirit continues and racing fires back up Sunday, and the focus this week is on Golden Gate Fields, which has a Late Pick 4 that’s worthy of our attention.

The sequence goes from races 8-11, and the featured 10th is a mile allowance race full of experienced and capable runners.

The suggested Pick 4 tickets amounts to $80, and here’s how I see it playing out:

          8th Race (5:45 p.m. ET, claiming)

ALL MY HOPE has the best form of any of these and came on for third last out. Is a four-time winner that qualifies under these conditions that don’t consider claiming and starter race for $10,000 or less for eligibility.

Has taken three of her last five races and her strength is that she can adapt to any scenario and at most any distance she faces.

This is a tough level, though, and several others are worth a look as well.

Also on the ticket: STAND IN YOUR LOVE, BLACK DROP, SEGURO, CANAM GAL.

9th Race (6:15 p.m. ET, maiden special weight)

GREAT STORY’s only start is a throw out as he was badly beaten on turf at Santa Anita in January. It’s been nearly a year since that only try, and since then, he’s transferred over to the Jonathan Wong stable and has been work very well over the Golden Gate Fields surface.

He’s in a wide-open maiden race that features a lot of speed and he faces several that cannot be a long way from a maiden win.

Also on the ticket: SWIMMINGWITHSHARKS, EXCEED SPEED LIMIT, MURPHYS TIGER.

          10th Race (6:45 p.m. ET, allowance)

TOM’S SURPRISE was an easy starter allowance winner last time and can successfully make the step back up to allowance company.

Was claimed by the Steiner stable three races back and has performed well in several for the Wong barn. Has won six of 10 races over the Golden Gate strip and usually has some late energy. Tough at this mile distance.

Also on the ticket: BURNIN TURF.

          11th Race (7:15 p.m. ET, claiming)

ROBS LUCKY SPIRIT can benefit a class drop and has in his favor a few other factors. He usually shows interest late in one-mile races, can get a good run from the rail, and looks good at this lowest level. You must always wonder about such a drop, and for that, there are plenty of others to consider as well.

Also on the ticket: SINGLE BARREL, LINFIELD, SUNNY SPOT.

Golden Gate Fields 50-cent Late Pick 4:

Race 8) #1 Stand in Your Love, #3 Black Drop, #4 Seguro, #5 All My Hope, #7 Canam Gal.
Race 9) #1 Swimmingwithsharks, #6 Great Story, #7 Exceed Speed Limit, #8 Murphys Tiger.
          Race 10) #8 Tom’s Surprise, #9 Burnin Turf.
Race 11) #1 Robs Lucky Spirit, #4 Single Barrel, #6 Linfield, #7 Sunny Spot.

          The ticket: 1-3-4-5-7 with 1-6-7-9 with 8-9 with 1-4-6-7 ($80).

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

            Fair Grounds - Race #7
            Picks Notes
#8 Manny Wah His only turf start produced a nice finishing score here with stakes company last season, and he would benefit if all the pace showed up to hassle the likely chalk in the early going.
#5 Just Might Can't really argue with this guy's recent form, having landed five in a row outside of graded stakes company. Tons of respect for him and what his team has done with him, but I worry that for as fast as he is, he might still have some company that leaves him softened up late.
#4 The Connector Think he's likely to find one or two of these too tough today, but he might be good enough to land a piece with his best stuff, as his turf sprint form is his best.
Race Summary Manny Wah might get the right setup with a few pretty serious speed players lined up in this one, and it's good to see he fired fresh to land that race last year, giving him a real chance to roll off the layoff today.

            Fair Grounds - Race #9
            Picks Notes
#7 Cavalry Charge Think he's worth a small look at a price in this spot as he has really moved up since heading over to the turf last year. He has excellent positional pace and should be able to land a perfect, first-over kind of trip here.
#11 Pixelate Think he's better than what he showed last time out, and he can turn the tables today on the guy who followed him around the course before punching past in that last try.
#10 Spooky Channel He has some quality to him that several of these lack, but this trip is shorter than his very best, and it's easy to see him coming alive a bit too late with these.
Race Summary Cavalry Charge should trip out from close range, and from there it might be a question of quality. Some of the main players in here want to run from further off the splits, and he may have a chance to open this race up into the lane and try to hold from there.

            Fair Grounds - Race #11
            Picks Notes
#2 Waita Minute Hayes He brings decent form to this including a prep stakes score last out before being DQ'ed to second. He has never been beaten on the dirt, and he'll get tested for class today, but he might be good enough to take this one at a mid-range price.
#1 Epicenter He stayed much better in that second trip to post when score from close range over good going, and he seems likely enough to get around two turns in this spot. Overbet?
#3 Rocket Dawg He moved nicely to sweep into contention and get clear in the debut score, and he has enough pedigree to get around two turns. Let's see what he's made of here.
Race Summary Waita Minute Hayes may offer a bit of price appeal with Epicenter and Rocket Dawg likely to take some cash for top connections off good Kentucky form. 'Hayes ran well against open company last out and seems competitive here.

              #21
              Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

              Santa Anita - Race #5
              Picks Notes
#4 Hit the Road Reuinites with jockey Rispoli, who is three for three on this More Than Ready colt; has had a penchant for finishing well and came up a half-length short in the G2 City of Hope Mile last time. Has enough speed to stay in range and has the closing move to be successful at this distance.
#1 Indian Peak Has been impressive in his rallies in his last two, with a win in the California Flag and a third in the G2 Seabiscuit; should get a favorable pace for his late move.
#2 Friar's Road Has found a true friend in turf and is was a closing third in two straight Grade 2 races; impossible to not take seriously.
Race Summary Hit the Road has some late pop and gets Rispoli, who fits him well and always has him in top stride late.

              Santa Anita - Race #6
              Picks Notes
#2 Express Train Was third in the G1 Awesome Again last out, and gets a change to one of the greatest big-money riders of all-time in Victor Espinoza, who picks up the mount. Looks for his first win since the G2 San Diego Handicap three back and get back to winning ways.
#4 Hot Rod Charlie Makes the last start of his highly successful 3-year-old campaign; gamer will be a factor throughout.
#6 Kiss Today Goodbye Was second in the Native Diver and won this race last year; inconsistent, but he's tough when he brings his best.
Race Summary Express Train ran a bad one two back in the G1 Pacific Classic, but he's been a strong player in seven of his last eight. Likes to be close to the lead throughout and he has a great opportunity for that today.

              Santa Anita - Race #10
              Picks Notes
#4 Dr. Schivel There's not many times a horse that runs second (by a nose) in the Breeders' Cup Sprint comes back as the second choice in a race without that Breeders' Cup Sprint winner (Aloha West). That's the case today, but this one put himself into the upper echelon of all sprinters when he won five straight wins prior to the BC loss. Can keep up here and should be tough to the finish.
#5 Flightline Tremendous in his two races and will be short on the board here; he faces the first real challenge of his career, and it's certainly possible that he answers the call.
#6 Team Merchants Has been trying turf and longer distances and could embrace this turn back in distance; two of his three wins were in sprints.
Race Summary Dr. Schivel won five of eight races, and his first two losses came in his first two starts. Once he caught on to how this game works, he became sensational. Flightline, the winner of his two races by a total of 25 lengths, is the new next best thing in the sport, and he'll have his toughest competition.

Laurel Park picks and ponderings December 26, 2021

by John Piassek | Dec 26, 2021 | Breaking, Handicapping

                  Post time: 12:25 p.m.

                  Carryovers: Rainbow Jackpot Pick 6 — $8,752 Super High 5 — $889 Late Pick 5 — $0
                  ANALYSIS

                  RACE 1: MAIDEN CLAIMING $25,000, 2-YEAR-OLDS, 5 1/2 FURLONGS

                  5-3-4-7
#5 Winston’s Gold (6/1) hasn’t been terribly visually impressive in either of his two starts, but he’s run brisnet figures in the mid-60s both times. Both those numbers should be good enough to beat this bunch. #3 Auction Kingdom (9/2) ran well in his lone try at this level two back, prompting the pace going a mile and hanging in there until late. That was going a mile; now he cuts back to 5 1/2 furlongs. That should be more to his liking. #4 Sloe Gin Biz (3/1) had a tough trip last out at Charles Town, getting caught wide throughout in a 4 1/2-furlong dash. He’s run plenty of competitive figures but is 0-for-7 lifetime. A bit wary of him at low odds.

RACE 2: GIN TALKING STAKES, 2-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES, 7 FURLONGS

                  4-2-6-1

This is the first of six stakes races on the card. Gin Talking won seven stakes races at Laurel Park in her career, including the Maryland Million Lassie in 1999 and the now-defunct Maryland Million Oaks in 2000. It’s no fun picking chalk, but looking past #4 Buy the Best (1/2) would just be contrarian for contrarian’s sake. She won the Smart Halo Stakes impressively last out, running on powerfully in the stretch after rating off the pace. She’s run at least an 87 in each of her last three starts. No one else has run better than an 83 at any point in their lives. #2 Beneath the Stars (3/1) has speed and an inside draw, and cruised to a gate-to-wire win on this track last out. She’s taken big steps forward in her last two starts. #6 My Thoughts (8/1) surged and just missed in the Maryland Million Lassie two back, but was flat at Parx last out. The price will be right if you still believe.

                  RACE 3: HEFT STAKES, 2-YEAR-OLDS, 7 FURLONGS

                  3-5-7-1
This race is named after the late owners Arnold and Sylvia Heft. In contrast to the Gin Talking, this race features a favorite who I think is beatable. #5 Life is Great (6/5) was impressive in victory at Aqueduct last out, and ran a big figure of 92. However, it was a big outlier from his prior races, and he took five tries to break his maiden. He can definitely win this race, but I don’t think I’d bet him to win at such a low number. The only really interesting thing about him is that Manny Franco is coming down just for this mount, with Aqueduct dark. I’ll take a shot with the Jersey-bred #3 Last Romance (4/1), as Cal Lynch will in all likelihood be looking for a sweep of the 2-year-old stakes. He made a strong move to the lead to break his maiden at Delaware Park on debut, and although he was second next out, he improved eleven points, to an 88. He’s had some good workouts since then and will certainly be the value play of the field. #7 Run to Daylight (3/1) was dominant at Charles Town earlier in the year, but was a non-factor in the James Lewis Stakes last out as the favorite. Looks for a rebound for the dream team of Jeff Runco and Arnaldo Bocachica.

                  ANALYSIS

RACE 4: CLAIMING $10,000 (CONDITIONED), 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 6 FURLONGS

                  4-9-3-14
#4 San Antone (9/2) was impressive in victory at this level a few races back, earning a 90 while rating off the pace and drawing away late. He stepped up in class last out, and held on for third after making a mild bid. Drops back in class and goes second off the claim for Kieron Magee. #9 Where U B (4/1) exits the same race that San Antone won in late October. He had won three in a row prior to that race, and set the pace before getting overwhelmed by San Antone. He was claimed out of that race by Anthony Farrior, who’s given him some time off. Will be dangerous on the front end. #3 Little Bold Bandit (15/1) just cleared his n/w2L condition at Charles Town last out and has good stalking speed. Will be a great value for a Jerry Robb/Xavier Perez horse.

RACE 5 – WILLA ON THE MOVE STAKES, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 6 FURLONGS

                  3-5-7-6
There were two stakes-winning Maryland-bred fillies named Willa On the Move: one in the late 1980s, the other in the early 2000s. We’ll consider this race a joint honor. If #3 Princess Kokachin (5/1) goes off anywhere near her morning line, it would be a belated Christmas present. She’s won five races in a row on this track, including a dominant 5 1/2-length win in the Politely Stakes. She’ll have to outrun Dontletsweetfoolya from her inside, but that rival’s early pace figures are not as good. #5 Call On Mischief (9/2) has been very consistent in the back half of the year, and has run in the 90s four times in her last five races. The one time she didn’t, she won the Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Distaff at Mahoning Valley. Kelly Breen has been tough with his shippers to Laurel this meet, with four wins from nine starters. #7 Miss Mosaic (9/2) ships from Kentucky and has been in good form against allowance types out there. She finished second behind Center Aisle last out, who came back to win the Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
RACE 6: DAVE’S FRIEND STAKES, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 6 FURLONGS
                  6-5-4-3
A field of eight lines up to contest this race named after the popular Maryland-bred sprinter of the early 1980s. The top three finishers in the Nov. 27 Howard and Sondra Bender Memorial Stakes are all back here. The winner of that race, #4 Whereshetoldmetogo (2/1), is the likely favorite, as he looks for his fifth stakes win of the year. However, I lean towards the runner-up, #6 Youngest of Five (4/1). He set the pace and hung in gamely in the stretch, and has been getting better with every race. The price will be right. #5 Newbomb (7/2) has been very impressive in allowance company in New York, but struggled in both his recent tries against stakes horses. In both those starts, he couldn’t get to the lead, but here, he should be at least near the lead. That’ll help the cause.

                  ANALYSIS

RACE 7: CAROUSEL STAKES, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 1 1/8 MILES

                  8-5-2-1
Of the three morning line choices, only one of them has raced recently and is proven around two turns. That’s #8 Miss Leslie (3/1), who went off as the favorite in the Thirty Eight Go Go Stakes last out, and rallied to win by half a length. She’s in rapidly improving form and has a strong closing kick. #5 Lookin Dynamic (8/1) was a game second at 33/1 behind Miss Leslie last out, running a career-best mark of 94. She’s much better when she gets more distance. #2 Artful Splatter (6/1) couldn’t get to the lead in the Thirty Eight Go Go and showed little, but was game on the front end in the Twixt Stakes a few races back. Will likely get to the rail and the lead by the first turn.
RACE 8: ROBERT MANFUSO STAKES, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 1/16 MILES
                  1-5-3-7
Manfuso was a longtime owner and breeder who also owned a share of Pimlico and Laurel at one point. #1 Cordmaker (2/1) has won three stakes races against similar company this year, rating on or near the pace each time. He has great middle speed and should get a perfect trip just off the pace on the inside. #5 Shackqueenking (5/2) sat just off the pace in the Richard Small Stakes last out and ran on well, but got outkicked by Cordmaker. This one’s been improving with each start and should hang around late. #3 Everett’s Song (9/2) scratched out of an allowance optional claiming spot a few days ago to race here. He was an impressive winner of the Harrods Creek Stakes a few starts back at Churchill Downs, but didn’t do much in the CIty of Laurel Stakes last out. He’s lightly-raced and is in mostly improving form, so I’m interested in how he does stretching out around two turns for the first time.
RACE 9: CLAIMING $12,500, 3-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 5 1/2 FURLONGS

                  7-4-6-8
#7 Tequila Fog (5/1) makes her first start since October 26, and hasn’t run worse than a 76 in any of her last three races. Recent workouts have been decent. Will be a threat if she can run her best race first off the layoff. #4 Joyful Noise (9/2) has flattened out in her last several starts but always rallies for a minor piece. This’ll be her eighteenth start of the year. #6 Movie Score (3/1) takes a drop in class and also races for the first time since October. She was consistently running in the upper-70s/low-80s before a disastrous last start. She requires a bit of a leap of faith at low odds, but is still worth a look. Her rider, Katie Hindt, is looking for her first career win.

NOTE: With the rain, I have no idea what the track will do with the turf races. I have a feeling the first race will be off and the races 6 1/2 furlongs down the hill are in danger, too. I think the stakes races will stay on the turf, but check changes.

                    FIRST RACE (Turf only): 7-11-12-5

                    SECOND RACE: 3-1-5-6

THIRD RACE: 1-7-6-2You will notice a new trainer’s name in Ruben Alvarado. He has taken over Peter Miller’s barn, or so Miller says, so treat as if Miller is still training, but also watch how this barn goes.

                    FOURTH RACE: 6-1-5-3

                    FIFTH RACE: 6-4-2-1

                    SIXTH RACE: 4-2-5-6 (BEST BET)

                    SEVENTH RACE: 9-7-8-3

                    EIGHTH RACE: 4-3-5-1

                    NINTH RACE: 7-1-3-5

                    10TH RACE: 5-7-4-3

                    11TH RACE: 11-5-4-7
