1^st race [NY, Md 40000, 6F] – (3) Damilano (B) came off a three-month layoff and appeared eager to run pre-race which caused him to break through the gate. He subsequently finished second ahead of a horse that came back to win his next start. (4) Brew Pub takes blinkers off as he drops back into the maiden claiming ranks with plenty of close calls in recent starts. (6) D’vinicris will move from turf to dirt for trainer David Donk and drops down seeking that first win. (1) Boom Boom Kaboom has run well at this level many times in the past on both turf and dirt for George Weaver.
2^nd race [Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (5) Diamond Collector ran second in her debut for Carlos Martin at odds of 5-1 behind Radio Days who came back and won an allowance at Aqueduct by more than eight lengths. (1) Exxaltress will make her debut for Chad Brown. The $350,000 2-year-old purchase is out of a mare that was stakes-placed and has produced 4 winners from 4 to start. (4) Geometrique is the second foal from a mare that won at first asking. Trainer Bobby Ribaudo does well with 2-year-olds when he gets them. (2) Rosebug will move from turf to dirt and cutback in distance for Bill Mott. She was first in her dirt debut at Saratoga.
3^rd race [NY, Alw 72000 N1X, 1 mi] – (4) Top of the Mint was a clear winner on the front-end for Mark Hennig following a layoff of just more than a year. The third-place runner in that race came back to win his next start. (5) Emperor’s Cause will cut back to sprinting after two solid results at this allowance level. (3) Quickflash was claimed last time after appearing for a tag for the first time at Aqueduct. He has plenty of top three finishes. (6) Kodiak Brown brings an excellent record from Finger Lakes for trainer Chris Englehart who is one of the best shuttling horses from that track to Aqueduct.
6^th race [Clm 25000 N2L, 1 mi] – (5) Rocco Strong makes the big drop from starter allowances to the N2L condition, blinkers come off, and he gets a rider change back to Dylan Davis. Last year, he broke his maiden at the Big A for $50,000. (7) Corkman will make a similar drop in class for Linda Rice who claimed him out of a maiden win for $25,000 two races ago. (3) Air Show was claimed last time for $40,000 by Tom Morley. If he can regain his form from the summer, he will be hard to beat. (1) Make It in Ny was second at this level two races back.

1st race – (1) Prettyaspink rallied for fourth in her debut and adds Saez for this trip. Gets a weak nod in an equally weak field. (7) Uncaptured Faith switches to Lopez and should be the main threat. (6) K Cottee tired in her debut and rates a look here. (2) Forge Ahead has some speed and may hang around for a share. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-7. Exactas: 1-7 over 2-6 and 2-6 over 1-7. Double: 1-2-6-7 over 1-2-6.
2nd race – (1) Charlotte the Brit takes a big class drop and returns to dirt. Can ride the rail to victory. (2) Pretzel debuts for Barboza and fits in with this group. (6) Henni Penny will be a threat in the final furlong. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-6.
4th race – (3) Joe DiBaggio (B) hit a home run with a sharp winning effort last time and can make it two in a row here. (7) Face of Victory has won two straight and should be the top threat. (5) Gangly was first and second in his last two starts and figures to be in the picture once again. (1) Uncork the Bottle can be a factor from the rail. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-7. Exactas: 3-7 over 1-5 and 1-5 over 3-7.
6th race – (3) Nurse Judy (B) rallied nicely to finish third. Makes amends for that setback here with the addition of blinkers. (7) Harper’s in Charge has speed from the outside and should be right there at the finish. (6) War Star should be closing quickly in the final furlong. (8) Baby Mo fits in nicely with this bunch. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-6-7-8. Doubles: 3-6-7-8 with 1-3-5.
7th race – (1) Pearlescent won easily in her last two tries on this surface and can make it a hat trick. (3) Omnia might contend off the Delgado claim. (5) Diamond Play may shine on the Tapeta course. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-5.

Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Rosebug #2, 5/2):

The Bill Mott trainee is a homebred that is by American Pharoah. Mike Rutherford is hoping his filly has what it takes to take the Trail all the way to the Oaks … or somewhere in “G” territory. The last time this one went to the post at Aqueduct, she was 2/1, finishing 6th against MSW Co. That was a complete failure considering her talent, but I think she can get back on track this time. With Jose Ortiz now back @NYRA’s course just adjacent to JFK Airport, the team should be able to make it to the winner’s circle. That would mean that she just broke her maiden … the time is coming.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Kobe’s Legacy #1, 8/1):

Wachtel Stable has a strong sense of what they are about, and this colt by Tourist is looking to make the switch from the turf to the dirt. Chris Englehart can put together some wins at the AQ Meet, and I like the price on this one. In a pair of attempts over the course of November and December, he got his debut out of the way, and then ran against a field of 9. Maybe the turf was just not his bag … the dirt could suit perfectly, and here is the chance to get this one at a great price—8/1. Eric Cancel can toss a win, now and then, so let’s see if he can get this one home!

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #1 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 1/8th, Bay Ridge S., $100k, F&M 3+):

The “Thursday” feature is this race … a nice little “Non-G” for our enjoyment. We have 5 NY Breds that are ready for action! This will be a distance test for sure. The favorite might end up being Danny Gargan’s Ice Princess #5. With 15 starts to her credit, this daughter of Palace Malice was pretty solid in back-to-back “Non-G” contests at Belmont in October. With a solid work tab under her, it is hard to imagine that she will not be competitive once again as Jose Lezcano rides. Opposing this one is an uncoupled entry from Horacio DePaz’s midst. Both Sharp Star #3 (9/5) and Amity Island #4 (15/1) appear to be 2 very different horses. The former looks strong after a 4th place finish last time in the Go for Wand S. (G3). She could not compete with Brad Cox’s Lady Rocket, but the drop down here makes a ton of sense. I think this will be an interesting duel, if this daughter of Munnings gets locked up with Englehart’s entry. As for DePaz’s other half, this filly by Brody’s Cause won the last time she was at Aqueduct back on 10 Dec. She does not have near the class that her barnmate does, but Manny Franco is going to try and scoop this one out from under the favorites. That also includes Robert Falcone’s Maiden Beauty #2 that is not without some class lines. Kendrick Carmouche has this mount, and I think if this one drifts anywhere toward 7/2 or higher, she could be the bet. Let’s structure a ticket that gives us the best chance to win … see below!

Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Basti Blue #6, 3/1):

The barn of Jose Camejo is going well right now, and looking at this entry, it is not hard to see that this gelding could add to his win total at the Meet. Against this lot, his 2-yr-old gelding that is about to turn a year older, should make quick work of those that are drawn in against him. The best news of all is that leading rider, Colby Hernandez gets the call. He should be able to build on this one’s last race, which was a 2nd place finish @FG in MSW Co. This one is logical …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #6

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 8: Vinegar Veggies #2, 12/1):

Trainer Kelly Rubley has a healthy stable, and this filly was claimed from Steve Asmussen’s midst back in September. It seems that in both his starts at Laurel Park this daughter of Violence was up against it (what a track!). The turf for the 1st time, then the mud … I would like to give her another chance because she is well-bred, and could catch a break in this spot. I know Angel Suarez is a rider with a paltry record when it comes to wins, but in a sprint like this … it's anyone’s game. What a price this one will be when it crosses the wire 1st.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #2 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 Mile and 70yds., ALLW46k, 3+ LA Breds):

Looking for a nice race to handicap, I found this tough go on the FG MT. This jockey colony in New Orleans is highly-competitive. Leading rider Colby Hernandez is working hard this winter. He will be aboard Shanghai Ronnie #4, a colt with 5 starts to his credit. The son of Shanghai Bobby has 2 wins, but he is going to have to step up his game in this spot. The Claiming game was one he mastered at Gulfstream, but coming to the Fair Grounds will take some extra effort. I like this runner, but I also want to consider a more experienced runner with more class. Bayou Jim #6 has frequented the LA Circuit all year, and it was last season in the Big Easy when he made the move from the “Claiming” to the “Allowance” level. Recently though, efforts at Delta and before that, Evangeline, were not the greatest. Maybe the George Woolf winner, Deshawn Parker can set things right. When it comes to a top pick, I am intrigued by Karl Broberg’s recent acquisition, Commander Scott #2. Ridden by Reylu Gutierrez, this 4-yr-old gelding was under the care of Sturges Ducoing before Broberg acquired him back in November. The Texas-based conditioner is going to try and send his new acquisition up in company, and it is a tactic that could prove profitable. With a record of 15/2-3-2, Gutierrez is hot as can be in the saddle. The young phenom rode in his 1st BC race in early November, and his time at the Fair Grounds has already yielded some fine results. Broberg’s new charge is going to be bet, but I still like his chances. This one is a bet …

Best Horse Racing Bets for Thursday, December 30, 2021

It was all about underdogs and sleepers at the three tracks I looked at for my Thursday picks—Aqueduct Racetrack, Fair Grounds Race Course, and Turfway Park.

I didn’t find a favorite I liked at either Fair Grounds or Aqueduct, but then I saw two that had the stats to match the morning-line’s favoritism at Turfway. On the other hand, I found two 8/1 sleepers at Aqueduct, which should embiggen our bankrolls a tad.

Thursday Picks for Aqueduct Racetrack

Let’s start on the main track with race three, a one-mile allowance race for New York-bred three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 8/1 sleeper in this six-horse race—Anything Pazible, ridden by Jacqueline A. Davis.

This six-year-old gelding finished in the money 25 of his 47 career starts, winning eight. Sure, that’s not particularly impressive, but in this field, it makes him a star—particularly when you notice that he’s won nearly as many races this year as the other five contenders combined (he’s won three in 2021, they’ve won four). Oh, and his speed figures are consistently high.

Anything Pazible is trained by co-owner Eduardo E. Jones for himself and Luis Gutierrez.

Race four is a six-furlong claiming race on the main track for three-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. My money’s on yet another 8/1 sleeper: Conformist with jockey Eric Cancel in the irons.

This three-year-old gelding moneyed five of his eight career starts, winning two, including the Ontario County Stakes (Black Type) at Finger Lakes in June. He’ll do.

Race seven is the Bay Ridge Stakes, a $100,000 purse, 1-1/8 miles run on the dirt for New York-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the 2/1 third-favored Maiden Beauty, with veteran jockey Kendrick Carmouche aboard.

The oldest horse in a short field of five, this five-year-old mare was aggressively campaigned at the stakes level, starting with her first professional race, the Lynbrook Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont Park in 2018—which she won.

Her overall record is 18 money finishes in 34 career starts, eight of those wins, and her 2021 record—four eight money finishes in nine starts, four of them wins—proves she knows her way to the winner’s circle.

Robert N. Falcone Jr. trains Maiden Beauty for John Grossi’s Racing Corp. Falcone tapped Carmouche to saddle Maiden Beauty for her last three races, resulting in two wins.
My Thursday Picks for Fair Grounds Race Course

We start on the dirt track with race five, a 5-1/2 furlong starter optional claiming race for Louisiana-bred three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on one of the second-favored entries (there are two at 4/1 in this race): Mr. Production piloted by Reylu Gutierrez.

This five-year-old finished 16 of his 25 career starts in the money, seven of them wins. And his 2021 record shows he’s just getting started: Nine money finishes in 13 starts, five of them wins.

Ron Faucheux trains Mr. Production for owner Allen Cassedy.

We move to the turf course for race six, a one-mile grass run for Louisiana-bred three-year-olds and upward. I like the third-favored (at 9/2) Jaci’s Royalty, with Declan Carroll aboard.
This four-year-old gelding finished in the money six of his 12 career starts, winning four. In this ragtag field of eleven, he’ll do.

Relative newcomer Cortland Harrison trains Jaci’s Royalty for Bienvenu Racing.

We’re back on the dirt for race seven, a one-mile and 70 yards allowance race for Louisiana-bred three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on one of the third-favored entries (there are three at 6/1 in this race), Guilty Lover, ridden by Rene Diaz.

Not only does this three-year-old gelding have the advantage of the best record in this eight-horse field (ten money finishes in 14 career starts, three of those wins), but he’s also got Diaz’s apprentice weight allowance to grease his way to the finish line.

Thursday’s Picks for Turfway Park

We’re on the all-weather track for race two, a one-mile claiming race for three-year-olds and upward that have never won two races. I like the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Heat of the Night, with veteran jockey Gerardo Corrales in the irons.

This three-year-old gelding finished in the money three of his nine career starts, winning one—his initial maiden attempt in September of 2020. Later that same month he finished fifth out of seven in the Summer Stakes (Grade I) at Woodbine.
Ranked among the top 100 in earnings and wins for the past four years, Timothy E. Hamm trains Heat of the Night for owners Blazing Meadows Farm LLC and Frederick Hertrich III.

Race six is a one-mile allowance optional claiming run on the all-weather track for three-year-olds and upward. I’m backing one of the fourth-favored entries (there are three at 5/1 in this race), Royne, ridden by Joseph Rocco Jr.

This three-year-old gelding finished three of his five career starts in the money, winning one. He notably finished six out of ten last year in the Central Park Stakes (Black Type) at Aqueduct. In 2021 he moneyed two of his three starts.

Even though this three-year-old gelding didn’t break his maiden until July, he’s still the statistical frontrunner in this lackluster field of eleven. For the record, Eye of the Cat moneyed three of his seven career starts, winning one.

#3 Air Show runs first off the claim for Morey today, while stretching out in distance, and dropping down in class a bit. #1 Make It in Ny also will be dropping down in class for this race, and getting back to his best distance, which should help him show improvement.

Race 7: Bay Ridge Stakes

#3 Sharp Starr drops down in class for this race, while also stretching back out in distance, and getting Jose Ortiz aboard for the third straight start. All those factors should make a difference. #5 Ice Princess has been a consistent runner on the circuit for the last couple of years.

Race 8: Maiden Claiming

#9 Total Effort will take a major drop down in class for this race after a poor effort on debut. This class level will probably suit him better. #4 My Boy Colton will move back to the dirt for this race after several failed efforts over the turf.
