Most Likely Winner: (Race 8: Matareya #4, 5/2):

When Brad Cox and Florent Geroux team-up, they can form a fearsome twosome. How about 77x? That is how many times they have worked together this year. Winning 25% of the time is not too shabby … This Godolphin homebred by Pioneerof the Nile gets Lasix for the 1st time, and though she failed last time out at Churchill in a 200k, she can easily rebound today. Geroux rode this won in her debut at Ellis, winning on the engine. Expect great things from this runner … the next great Cox runner? We shall see …

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #4

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Fire Coral #8, 5/1):

Trainer Steve Asmussen’s reach is strong, especially when it comes to Oaklawn. Looking over this field, I think he has a good one entered in this OC contest. The last time we saw this 4-yr-old, she was up against a tough field of 4 others in an OC62.5k route on the dirt at Keeneland. She just missed by a neck—Microcap outlasted her. Her back class is strong, and I like the addition of Ramon Vasquez. He has a good OP Meet going right now, and that should continue. Owned by Susan Moulton, the Curlin filly is 5/2-0-1 in Hot Springs. Sounds like a bet to me … anything above 5/1 is an overlay in my estimation.

      Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #8 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

      Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Dirt, 6F, ALLW100k, F&M 3+):

Here is a “spotlight” that will really kick-off the New Year’s Eve party! With a dozen entered, it is sure to offer some value, especially if you are willing to take on a price. I am sure that Brad Cox’s Palm Cottage #2 and/or Chris Hartman’s Code Name Kate #5 will end up at the top of the tote board. Either is capable, and since they faced each other last time in a similar, it stands to reason that they will be well-bet again. The other alum of that race is here too (finished 3rd), and that is Scott Becker’s Miz Blue #8. I like her price much better than the other 2, and even though she lost the lead coming down the lane, that doesn’t mean she cannot rebound here. Her style is all out on the frontend, so that is a weapon, if the pace can roll in her favor. Let’s use all 3 of these runners on a Trifecta ticket, but as for my top selection, I particularly like Ernie Witt’s OP specialist, Kaboom Baby #6. In 5 career races (all @OP), the Tracy Selby homebred has always hit-the-board. With a pair of wins on the track, the filly is just getting started. By Hightail, this one gets “Luis Q,” and he has the know-how to get this one across the wire first. Let’s use her on top, and reap the benefits of what could be a great score.

      Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Wheel, 6 w 2/5/8 w 2/5/8

Below is a table for each race of the day. The table is ordered by our algorythmically calculated expected order of finish. Our program takes into account past performances, workout times, speed ratings, recency, and breeder/jockey data amoung other data points.

Using the “Expected” column, the lower number is better. When there is a clear lowest value, we like that horse best to win. In situations where many horses share low numbers, we like those horses equally well. If no horse is under 3, the results are less clear to us and bettors should examine the race more closely.

Using the “Value” column, we present the minimum payout we would recommend betting the particular horse. Look for higher-paying odds than those listed if you like that horse.

Scratches are notated and will be updated as available.

          RACE 1: EVERESTING (#2)

Castle Chaos looks pretty formidable at first glance, having paired up solid speed figures in his two starts. Claimed for $75k out of his career debut, in which he ran quite well to be 2nd behind repeat winner Boldish, he backed up that form at Belmont for the new connections. He was obviously no match for the talented Happy Medium, but he stayed on gamely for second in a race that has produced four next-out winners. The layoff since then is of minor concern, especially considering that he’s going to be a very short price. That said, Falcone’s horses have been firing lately and stretching back out to 7F figures to help. Main rival Mandatory is clearly good enough to beat this field when he’s at his best. He ran well in a couple of maiden events here last winter, checking in third behind the talented Mystic Night on Jan. 30 before splitting Hometown and Happy Medium in a strong maiden event on March 14. He owns the best speed figures in this field, but he does need to move forward off his return race last time. Both favorites can obviously win, but I’m more interested in another rival at an enticing price. Everesting put forth a career-best effort off the claim for the new connections last time, opening up a sizable early advantage before tiring. It looked like he was going to get swallowed up in mid-stretch, but he battled on gamely to come back for third at odds of 36-1. That was obviously on the turf and he has made most of his starts on that surface. However, his lone dirt performance back in March wasn’t that bad, as he got involved in a fast pace that day against a solid field. Perhaps he's just improved for these low-profile connections, and he’s going to be a square price.

          RACE 7: DANNY CALIFORNIA (#2)

Speedy 6-year-old Sea Foam is always dangerous in these races, especially when he looks like the controlling front-runner, as appears to be the case this time. He’s held his form well since the claim by his current connections. He did have a speed-favoring track working in his favor when he won the Evan Shipman over the summer, but he still won decisively. I won’t fault him for failing to handle 1 1/2 miles at Parx, and he bounced back nicely in the Empire Classic. While he was no match for the very good Americanrevolution, he was probably second best despite getting nipped at the wire for place. I’m not against him, though he could receive some early pressure from the likes of Our Last Buck and Chowda. Rudy Rodriguez has a pair of entrants in this race and they’re both strong contenders. Tiergan owns the better recent form. He’s been a fantastic $16k claim for these connections. He hadn’t finished out of the exacta in any of his 2021 starts until trying the Empire Classic two back. He didn’t run well that day, but bounced back in a big way last time, staying on gamely behind a pair of talented open company rivals. Horses exiting that Nov. 28 optional claimer have fared well in subsequent starts. He’s a major player based on that performance, but it’s a little hard to trust this rider, who has to work out a trip from the outside post. I prefer Danny California of the Rudy pair. Some may be deterred by the recent string of defeats, but it’s worth digging a little deeper into this guy’s PPs. He’s always been best over longer distances, so 1 1/8 miles is right up his alley. He won going this distance at Saratoga on Aug. 7 with a career-best 119 TimeformUS Speed Figure. A repeat of that performance would put him in the winner’s circle here. He regressed subsequently, but he had excuses (quick turnaround on Aug. 11 and speed-favoring track on Sept. 5). He didn’t run well last time but was steadied early in a race dominated on the front end. Now he picks up Jose Ortiz and is drawn well inside.

          RACE 8: SALTY HEIR (#3)

I’m not thrilled with any of the likely short prices in this finale. The two horses who could vie for favoritism are both switching from turf to dirt. Curlin’s Wisdom and Excursionniste had both previously run well on the dirt, but it’s not like their prior form suggests they’re all that formidable here. I prefer the early speed of Curlin’s Wisdom, who was forwardly placed sprinting in his debut. He faded that day, but was racing wide against a rail bias. I don’t know why his connections tried turf in his second start, but he’s probably getting a chance to do what he prefers this time – route on dirt – since he’s by Curlin out of a half-sister to Connect. Excursionniste ran a respectable speed figure on the dirt two back in the Sleepy Hollow, but he wasn’t really competitive there and he just hasn’t moved forward as much as one might have expected following his second start. I want to get a little more creative. Salty Heir should get somewhat overlooked after losing his two starts by a combined 30 lengths. However, I think this horse may have more ability than his running lines indicate. He never had a chance against an unusually strong field in his debut, and he took a subtle step forward second time out. He was ridden to chase the pace after a poor start but dropped back on the turn while racing extremely wide. He looked hopelessly beaten in upper stretch but stayed on well through the lane and was actually gaining at the end. He ran like a horse that needs more ground, and his pedigree supports that notion. He’s a half-brother to Lobsta and Chowda, both of whom improved going longer. Whereas they’re both by Emcee, this colt is by established route sire Micromanage, so the distance really figures to work in his favor.

            Today’s Racing Tips – December 31st

There are 4 race meetings on Friday in Britain and Ireland, with the year ending on a high over jumps at Punchestown, Warwick and Uttoxeter. The ground is sure to be very testing at all three tracks, and big fields are likely with some very competitive handicaps on the cards. All-weather followers have the Lingfield card to attack, with seven races
            scheduled starting at 12.10pm.

VALUE ANGLE Warwick 2:15PM Militarian 4.0

Best odds available as at 4pm December 30th 2021. Odds may now differ.
            Today’s Daily Nap

            Sandy Brook

            Warwick 1:05 PM

Chris Gordon’s maiden was an expensive failure last time out at Plumpton, but there were excuses for that and he will relish a step up in trip now handicapping at Warwick on Friday. He remains open to plenty of improvement after just three runs over hurdles, and the expected soft ground should suit ideally.
            Today’s Value Angle

            Militarian

            Warwick 2:15 PM

This four time winning chaser has been shaping better than the bare result this winter, and a return to more positive tactics can see him win again under the handy 3lb claimer James Martin. He ran really well when second at Huntingdon one run back, and perhaps was ill at ease on the track when disappointing at Sedgefield last time out.

Best Horse Racing Bets for Friday, December 31, 2021
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

Delta Downs, Golden Gate Fields, and Oaklawn Park are where I found my Friday horseracing picks.

While my picks at Delta Downs were mostly the morning-line’s favorites, I found 8/1 sleepers at both Golden Gate Fields and Oaklawn Park, which always makes for some tense but entertaining races.

You can check my math with a visit to one of our best online racebooks.

                Good luck!
My Friday Picks for Delta Downs

We’re on the dirt track for race four, a 6-1/2 furlong allowance race for Louisiana-bred three-year-olds and upward. I’m backing the 4/1 second-favored Wise Anchor, ridden by veteran jockey Timothy Thornton.

This three-year-old gelding moneyed 12 of his 17 career starts, winning two. Notably, he finished second in the Louisiana Legacy Stakes (Black Type) here at Delta Downs last January.

Ranked #1 for wins in six of the last seven years, Karl Broberg trains Wise Anchor for owner Kenneth M. White.

Race six is a 7-1/2 furlong allowance race on the dirt track for Louisiana-bred three-year-olds and upward that have never won two races. My money’s on the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Seehoss, piloted by Joe Stokes.

This three-year-old gelding finished eight of his nine career starts in the money, winning one. In this inexperienced field of eight, he’ll do.
Allen Landry trains Seehoss for owners Maximo Lamarche and Federico Deltoro. Incidentally, Landry is having a very winning 2021. He has tapped Stokes to saddle Seehoss for multiple rides, including his maiden victory.

Race eight is the Lookout Stakes, a $70,000 purse, 7-1/2 furlong race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won a stakes race. I’m betting my two dollars on the second-favored (at 3/1) Strummer, with veteran jockey Gerard Melancon aboard.

In this evenly matched eight-horse field, Strummer is the statistical standout.

The three-year-old filly moneyed five of her eight career starts, winning three—her most recent three, in fact. While still in the maiden class, she finished fifth in a nine-horse field in the Louisiana Champions Day Lassie Stakes (Black Type) at Fair Grounds last December.

Longtime racing veteran Scott Gelner trains Strummer for Oak Tree Stables LLC (Powell and O’Brien). Jockey Melancon was in the irons for two of Strummer’s three wins.
Friday’s Picks for Golden Gate Fields

Let’s start on the all-weather track for race five, a 5-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race for two-year-olds. I like the third-favored (at 3/1) Stanford Bay, with Brayan Pena aboard.

This colt moneyed five of his six career starts, winning two. He notably finished second in the Golden Nugget Stakes (Black Type) here at Golden Gate in November. It doesn’t hurt that jockey Brayan Pena is having the winningest year of his career.

Jonathan Wong trains Stanford Bay for owner-breeder Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC.

Race seven is a one-mile starter allowance race on the all-weather track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the 8/1 sleeper, Torquay, ridden by veteran jockey Alejandro Gomez.
This four-year-old filly finished in the money six of her ten career starts, winning two, which actually puts her in the statistical lead of this eight-horse field.

Jose Bautista, who’s setting new records for himself in both wins and earnings this year, trains Torquay for owner-breeders Edward DeNike and Theresa DeNike.

Race eight is a 1-1/16 miles allowance optional claiming race on the all-weather track for three-year-olds and upward. While the morning-line favorite has posted some impressive speed figures lately, I still like the second-favored (at 4/1) entry for this race—Tesoro, with Francisco Monroy in the irons.

This three-year-old colt finished in the money for four of his seven career starts, winning two. Most recently, Tesoro finished third in the Bull Dog Stakes (Black Type) at Fresno in October, and second in the Zia Park Derby (Listed) in November.

Racing veteran O.J. Jauregui trains Tesoro for owners Glen Road Racing, LLC, Highland Yard LLC, Ben Raygoza, and Arthur Spencer.
                Friday Picks for Oaklawn Park

We’re on the main track for race five, a 1-1/16 miles allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m following the morning line’s advice here and betting on the 5/2 favorite, Sun Path, ridden by Florent Geroux.

This three-year-old filly finished in the money for five of her six career starts, winning two. She also finished third in the Honeybee Stakes (Grade III) here at Oaklawn in March. This is a talented eight-horse field, but she’ll prevail.

Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup veteran Brad H. Cox trains Sun Path for Juddmonte.

Race eight is a one-mile allowance run on the main track for two-year-old fillies. I’m also calling this one for the morning-line favorite (at 5/2), Matareya, with Florent Geroux in the irons.
This filly moneyed two of her three career starts, winning her initial maiden attempt at Ellis Park in August and finishing second at Churchill Downs in the Fern Creek Stakes (Black Type) last month.

In between those, she finished fifth in a 12-horse field in the Darley Alcibiades Stakes (Grade I) at Keeneland. She’ll do.

Brad H. Cox trains Matareya for owner-breeder Godolphin, LLC.

Race nine is a six-furlong allowance race for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 8/1 sleeper, Kaboom Baby, piloted by veteran jockey Luis S. Quinonez.

This three-year-old finished all five of her career starts in the money, winning two. She also finished third in the Rainbow Miss Stakes (Black Type) here at Oaklawn in April. Even in this crowded 14-horse race, she’s the standout.

Ernie Witt, II—who’s having a very good 2021 in terms of wins and earnings—trains Kaboom Baby for owner-breeder Tracy K. Selby. Witt has put Quinonez in the irons for all five of Kaboom Baby’s pro-outings.

                  Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 31st December 2021
By: Racing and Sports Time published 2021-12-31

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Moonee Valley, Gosford, Mt Barker, Warrnambool, Nowra, Echuca and Port Lincoln,

                  MOONEE VALLEY: RACE 4 @ 6:45 PM

MARCOLT (2) was impossible to miss first up over 1418m at Geelong, coming from last on the corner to storm home and beat all but one. Genuine gelding who was competitive in Saturday grade last prep. Will be hard to hold out over the longer trip off the back of a strong tempo. ALVERDUN (3) improves at each appearance, culminating in a tough maiden win over this course and distance three weeks ago. Meets a deeper field this time but has more to offer. The consistent BRING THE STARS (6) has been freshened up since a tidy second over 2040m here five weeks ago. Good each-way prospects. Last-start Morphettville maiden winner RACE AGAINST TIME (8) is tackling a tougher assignment this evening but could add some spice to exotics.
SELECTIONS: #2 Marcolt is quite short but he does looks a bit better than these.

As a FREE Racing and Sports offer, below is the Moonee Valley Card

                  GOSFORD: RACE 2 @ 2:00 PM

The well-related NASTURTIUM (1) couldn't have been more impressive on debut winning by over five lengths at Hawkesbury. Will have taken plenty of benefit from that victory and is clearly the one they all have to run down. ESTERHAZY (7) is another to win on debut at Hawkesbury, albeit in slightly less impressive fashion. Looks a genuine top-three contender. SMOKESHOW (8) resumes here and the form she showed last preparation was good enough to feature in this. In the mix. MR POINTER (4) best of the rest with the claim.
                  SELECTIONS: Nasturtium to win.

                  MT BARKER: RACE 7 @ 5:37 PM

EURASIA (1) doesn't win out of turn but meets a fairly average lot here and should appreciate the drop in class. He will benefit from a 2kg claim and from the good draw looks to have this field at his mercy. Should be winning this race. SO SCHMICK (2) has needed both his runs back and strips fitter third up. He drops in grade and should be ready to show some worthwhile form. Include in all multiples. LOSING TICKET (3) is another that has lacked race fitness but should now be nearing her peak third up. She has yet to finish out of the money in five races on the course and that record includes two wins. A form reversal can be expected. O'SO TEMPTING (4) just held on to win by a nose in an easier race last start but did win well in this grade three starts back. He usually puts himself into the race early and around this track that is a bonus. He won't be far away.
                  SELECTIONS: Eurasia win bet.

                  WARRNAMBOOL: RACE 7 @ 6:00 PM

MR CANCUN (6) was a winner two back then a huge run from last to just miss at Flemington. Well placed here and will be tough to beat. AURORA'S SYMPHONY (7) performed well last start when third at Ararat over 2000m and peaks for this. Trained here and looks the main danger. Stablemate HUMBLE PIE (8) finished in the money last start running third at Moonee Valley and should strip fitter for two runs back. Expected to feature. SPANISH SNITZEL (10) finished just ahead of Humble Pie last time when second at Moonee Valley and also looks ready to hit top form. GUIZOT (1) is worth including.
                  SELECTIONS: Mr Cancun can atone.

                  NOWRA: RACE 3 @ 2:49 PM

SHAKA ROCK (2) had been in the top three in four consecutive runs before finishing down the track in a Summer Provincial Final over this trip at Newcastle last start. Watch for a return to form in this far more suitable contest. BUZZ 'N' JOE (7) wasn't beaten far at Wyong in a Bm64 two runs back then he struggled in town last time when stepping up sharply in trip. Far better for that run and back at this level is a serious contender. ALASTOR (6) battled on evenly without threatening over this trip at Wyong recently. Has a good record at the mile so back in grade he is worth considering. AEROBATIC WARRIOR (3) did nothing when resuming at the Beaumont track but his second up form is far better; likely improver. Track specialist FIRST COURRIER (1) is also a live chance.
SELECTIONS: #2 Shaka Rock to appreciate the drop in grade and take this out.

                  ECHUCA: RACE 7 @ 2:20 PM

MAGNUM BULLET (3) raced handy and battled on okay into second place when resuming over 1112m at Kyneton. Has the claim and good early speed. Expected to take catching. DISHY'S (10) has been thereabouts without winning, placing three of last four. Sits handy in the run and best form puts him right in this. HUGO LOVES VEGAS (6) ran seventh last time out at Wangaratta after a slow getaway and covering ground. Rates a hope with a cheaper run here. GREETINGS NED (1) finished seventh last start, beaten 8 lengths at Morphettville Parks over 1400m. Suited here and has the big claim. Can feature while fresh. FIRST POINT (2) next best.
SELECTIONS: Magnum Bullet to take catching.

                  PORT LINCOLN: RACE 3 @ 3:15 PM

KINGSON (2) was back to his best with a dominant win here last time scoring by 6.7 len and he looks hard to beat again despite the wide barrier. SORRIDERE (9) is chasing three wins in succession and maps to get a perfect run from barrier two. SHINSEKI (7) was runner-up here three starts back and his past two effort in city grade have been good for a race like this. TIME WARRIOR (6) resumed with a good run when 3rd behind Amani Farsi and is a winner second-up. SWING IT SISTER (11) was placed behind Sorridere last time and should get a good run from the inside barrier.
SELECTIONS: Kingson to make it two wins on end.

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TPC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
                          *
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 individual
algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100 point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

Use (in order of preference): 3-Distractedprincess; 7-Angel of Freedom

Forecast: 3-Distractedprincess has trained fairly well for her debut and lands a modest spot for older maiden fillies and mares. She should find herself on or near a modest early pace and given that type of trip should be a major factor throughout. Angel of Freedom is a six race maiden and not really getting any better, but she’s drawn nicely outside and is a guaranteed a soft stalking trip. The route to sprint angle and she’s hit the board in four of her five career starts.

                          Notable Workouts:

                          Distractedprincess (December 22, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00hg). Grade: B

In company and slightly second best with Wharton (same time, entered in today’s 6th race) for B. Baffert, splits of :24.1, :35.3, :47.4 and 1:00.1 on our watches, ridden most of the way but not bad for yet-to-start maiden. Has some ability and should be reasonably live in a field with older fillies and mares.

Use (in order of preference): 2-King Apollo; 4-Town Boy; 3-Fowler Blue

Forecast: King Apollo (TOC=4/5; ML=2-1) graduated nicely at Los Alamitos in his second start since being claimed by K. Mulhall for $50,000 and earned vastly improved speed figure in the process. Based on pedigree this stretch out to a mile shouldn’t be an issue, so we’re expecting the son of Palace Malice to be tough right back in this starter optional claimer for juveniles. Town Boy (TOC=6-1; M:=6-1) is much slower on speed figures than King Apollo, but he’s trained quite well since graduating for $32,000 at Del Mar last time out and can be expected to produce a strong forward move for new trainer P. Eurton. He should be on or near the lead throughout. Fowler Blue (TOC=5/2; ML=5/2) is another that has looked pretty nice in the a.m. of late and exiting a much tougher race (the King Glorious S. at Los Alamitos). He projects to earn at least a minor share and is worth including on your ticket as a back-up or a saver.

                          Notable Workouts:

Town Boy (December 18, Santa Anita, 4f, :49h). Grade: B

Nice and easy for recently claimed colt for P. Eurton, breezing through the lane while looking sharp and eager. We’re expecting to see improvement based on this drill. Nicely-bred, is coming around, and should prove to be a useful claim.

Use (in order of preference): 6-Feeling Grazeful; 2-Self Isolation; 3-All Dialed In

Forecast: This maiden state-bred sprint for older fillies and mares came up softer than par and doesn’t really offer much to work with. Feeling Grazeful returns to dirt and a repeat of here runner-up effort two races back probably should be good enough. In a race lacking in early speed, the daughter of Grazen should find herself on or near the lead through soft early fractions. Self Isolation and All Dialed In, two-three finishers in a similar affair at Los Alamitos earlier this month, should be included on your ticket as well. The former earned a career top number when missing by a neck, and not much more will be needed today, while the latter was making her debut, closed with interest, and has every right to improve today.

Use (in order of preference): 1-Godsend; 2-McLaren Vale; 5-Top Secret

Forecast: Godsend ran well to be third in a tough raced at Del Mar and a repeat of that race today should be good enough. He was disappointing in his most recent workout, though, so we’re not entirely sure which version of this Midshipman colt we’ll see today. McLaren Vale, listed as the 8/5 morning line favorite, has worked okay for B. Baffert, and while we suspect he can’t beat a really good maiden, there may not be one in here. Top Secret, a first-timer by Uncle Mo, has trained like a route type for R. Mandella. You can toss him in as a saver or a back-up, but we believe he’s a down-the-road type.

                          Notable Workouts:

                          Godsend (December 19, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.2h). Grade: C+

Outworked by Khantaro D’Oro (5f, 1:01h) while under pressure late and weakening in the final stages to wind up more than a length behind at the wire. Was hoping for better after a promising run vs. tough maidens at Del Mar last time out.

McLaren Vale (December 20, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.1hg). Grade: B-

Best in a team gate drill with Kerouac (5f, 1:01.3hg) while being ridden some throughout, steady splits, decent enough but nothing more. Has some run, seems fit, probably can’t beat a real good maiden at this time for B. Baffert. Was $625,000 yearling by Gun Runner.

Top Secret (December 12, Santa Anita, 6f, 1:13.4h). Grade: B-

May have been a tad the best working inside Q B One (same time), splits of :24.3, :36.3, 1:01.1 and 1:13.4 from the five furlong pole out to the seven furlong pole. Has some ability but isn’t a win-early sprint type. May need some racing and a distance of ground before showing his best stuff.

Use (in order of preference): 4-California Street; 2-Italiano

Forecast: Just five runners showed up for this $32,000 extended sprint, with California Street (TOC=2/5; ML=6/5) the logical top pick even though the class drop following a $40,000 isn’t a confidence-building move. However, if the veteran gelding now in T. Yakteen’s barn shows up with anything close to his best stuff he’ll regain his winning form. This seven furlong distance is perfect for his style. Bay Area shipper Italiano, TOC=9/2; ML=9/5) takes a significant class drop but remains above his claim level and appears extremely well-meant. He’s a two-time winner over the Santa Anita main track and has won or placed in five of his last six starts.

                          Single: 6-Got Thunder

Forecast: After finishing an excellent runner-up in a strong maiden sprint at Del Mar and working very well since that race, Got Thunder should be a heavy choice to graduate in this maiden dash for juveniles. The son of Arrogate was used hard on the rail in that outing last month and today lands the cozy outside post while retaining F. Prat. Simply stated, he’s the surest winner on the program.

                          Notable Workouts:

Easily disposed of Delta Wind (5f, 101.4h) for Sadler, stalking that one outside and going by when ready in the final furlong without being asked, final quarter mile in a sharp :23.4. Ran quite well in debut, seems certain to improve with experience and distance and remains a very bright prospect.

Use (in order of preference): 5-Moment of Peace; 6-Flying Drummer

Forecast: Moment of Peace (TOC=5/2; ML=5/2) finished steadily to be fourth in his debut and seems certain to step forward in a big way with that bit of experience behind him. The son of Tapit should love today’s two-turn mile trip, has trained well since his debut, and rates the edge over the other main contender, Flying Drummer (TOC=8/5; ML=8/5). The latter showed good promise when second in his first two outings, was most recently overmatched in the American Pharoah S.-G1 during the fall meeting, but returns facing maidens, has trained solidly for his return, and could find himself as the controlling speed. Given that type of trip, he could take this field a long way.

                          Notable Workouts:

Moment of Peace (December 11, Santa Anita, 4f, :48h). Grade: B

Worked inside Dream Princess (4f, :48.2h) and was noticeably best for Sadler, final three furlongs in :11.3 and :36.2. Have to think this Tapit colt will improve with distance and experience. Useful type, at the very least.

Inside Montebello (same time) for B. Baffert while working from the half mile pole to the seven furlong pole and proving best under some late urging, splits of :24.3, :49.2 and 1:02 flat. Looks okay after being freshened since the fall, has a chance to improve when returned to the maiden ranks.

                          Single: 5-Took Charge

Forecast: Took Charge (TOC=6/5; ML=5/2) earned a career top speed figure when winning a first-level allowance sprint at Del Mar last month and has trained in spectacular fashion since. The R. Baltas-trained gelding looks more than capable of repeating on the raise, especially in a race that lacks his kind of early speed. A repeat of his last figure beats these, so let’s make him a good play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

                          Notable Workouts:

In blinkers, razor sharp solo main track drill for R. Baltas, strong through the lane while finishing with a ton left. Earned career top speed figure last time out and looks equally sharp if not better now.

                          Use: 6-Careless Kitten; 7-Irresistibly Sexy; 1-Settecento

Forecast: Here’s an inscrutable bottom-rung maiden $20,000 claiming sprint for older horses. Anything goes, and nothing would surprise us. Careless Kitten actually finished first in a race two runs back but was disqualified, so there’s that. He’s also removing blinkers, a good angle for us. We’ll put him on top but have little to no confidence in the selection. Irresistibly Sexy removes blinkers and has closed well on occasion. That’s more than most of these can say. The first-timer Settecento has some decent workout times on his resume. The one time we saw him in the morning (last summer) he didn’t look like much, but he’s probably no worse than the majority in the field. Throw him in, in fact, throw them all in.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

                            December 31, 2021 | By Al Cimaglia

The Meadowlands closes out the calendar year with a 14-race card. The Early 0.50 Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The challenging sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                            Race 6

1-Cool Blues Man (7/2)-Was bet down to 3/2 in the 1st start for the Jen B barn and had a decent effort. Faded down the lane after being used hard to get the top. Fits with these, Hanners takes the lines and looking for a more efficient trip tonight.
7-Luck N Roll K (9/2)-Tries hard but keeps drawing to the outside. Should get a good early seat and might be overlooked at the windows. Has hit the board in 16 of 33 Big M races with 6 wins and should be a factor with a sharp steer.
8-Mindtrip (3-1)-Was used hard in last from post 9 and cashed a 3rd place check. Makes the 1st start in the Davis barn and does very good work at M1. Has won 15 of 46 starts here and looks like a main player.

                            Race 7

2-Rockin Panda (6-1)-Steps-up but fits and has more wins at the Big M than anyone in the field except for #7. Panda should be racing near the top of the stack and could trip out a solid price.
5-Nesh Cruiser (12-1)-This 9-year-old is making only its 3rd M1 start but shows good efforts on the big track at VD. Willing to use at the morning line price and Dobson has options on how the trip could play out.
9-Watchmeneighneigh (7/2)-Not in love with the morning line price but knows how to win at M1 (29-6-4-3). Marcus Miller will take a seat and has the speed to be in the mix. Best to not overlook versus this crew despite the post draw.

                            Race 8

2-War Dan Delight N (9/2)-Has been in the hunt versus better on 1/2-mile ovals on the East coast and now makes its M1 debut. There isn't much form in this field and this camera shy 6-year-old is in a spot for a rare win. The Harmon barn is posting 27% winners over the past 30 days.
4-Big Sweep Osborne (3-1)-Will toss last at Phl and usually gives an honest effort at the Big M. This is a soft spot and could be sitting on a big try.

                            Race 9

1-Lachie Maguire N (12-1)-Drops and should like the company. May surprise at a price if Zeron can be in striking range at the top of the lane.
5-Bet Ninteen (7/2)-Has the gate speed to get on the point or land in the pocket and either trip could work to snag the 13th win this year. The Guagliardo barn has won 5 of 10 starts over the past 30 days and this Betting Line 3-year-old looks like a major player.

                            0.50 Early Pick 4

                            1,7,8/2,5,9/2,4/1,5
                            Total bet=$18

Frank Carulli: Stronach 5 Analysis: Friday, Dec. 31, 2021

                              December 31, 2021 | By Frank Carulli

The New Year's Eve party will start early for horseplayers, who have the Stronach 5 on the Friday menu. The $1 wager covers three tracks and five races from coast to coast, all in a one-hour afternoon time frame. Here's an early look at the action, with an update to follow after scratches Friday morning:

LEG A: (Laurel Park, race 8, 3:50 EST) -- VENEZUELA ranged up in-hand, dueled with winning favorite Boss Logic (4-9, $97k) and drifted out badly in the stretch to finish second. ARMANDO R rallied to win three of his last six starts at this distance and steps up off the claim. RATIFY, 6/3-2-0 during a $107k sophomore season, returns off a long layoff for high-percentage connections.

LEG B: (Gulfstream Park, race 8, 4:07 EST) -- MISS AURAMET held sway under demanding fractions to win off a 4-month layoff and will take some catching again today. MISS J MCKAY, anxious while saving ground to the stretch, split rivals in the final sixteenth and edged clear of the pace setter.

LEG C: (Laurel Park, race 9, 4:22 EST) -- Going 5-deep in this leg of the ticket. DEVILISH AFFAIR runs for the cheapest tag of her career and gets plenty of pace to rally into. R AVERIE LYNN dueled through solid fractions and faded to third off the claim but could go the distance on the class drop. EXACT burned money in her last three starts out of town, now tries a longer sprint. FYVIE won two of her last three starts by 8+ lengths. MAVILUS dueled and held second at one mile in her last two starts.

LEG D: (Santa Anita, race 3, 4:40 EST) -- ALL DIALED IN trailed nearing the Los Alamitos stretch but closed with a flourish for third in a well-bet debut. The extra half-furlong today could make the difference. SELF ISOLATION sat a good trip off the dueling leaders, appeared to make a winning 3-wide bid but raced erratically in the lane, costing her victory in the same race.

LEG E: (Golden Gate, race 3, 4:45 EST) -- TRAFFIC STOPPER led through the turn in her turf debut but couldn't fend off the odds-on favorite. She can make good use of her speed in this spot on the return to the main track. LIAM'S SECRET chased the 7-to-5 favorite and held second in a 6F sprint two starts back at this level. The pace was comparable to a 5-1/2F sprint for $16,000 boys earlier on the card.

                              Suggested $1 Ticket

                              Leg A: 2, 6, 9
                              Leg B: 5, 7
                              Leg C: 1, 2, 3, 5, 9
                              Leg D: 2, 3
                              Leg E: 2, 6
                              COST: $120

                                Fair Grounds - Race #6
                                Picks Notes
#1 Ready for Change She's supposed to be better at this type of trip than she showed in her only turf sprint at Keeneland in April, and she has shown a pretty high ceiling when she brings her best game Big chance today.
#6 Inajiffy She looks like the one to beat while dropping out of stakes company after three starts with better groups, and she'll get blinkers on today while trying to remain undefeated from three starts outside of stakes spots.
#4 Vincaia She's a tough read with all kinds of form on her page through just five races, but she has done decent work going short on the turf in the past and wouldn't be a total shock here -- also wouldn't be a surprise to see her pop early and fade badly. Tough call.
Race Summary Ready for Change might be the right one to beat the logical Inajiffy, who brings tough company lines with her, but 'Change has flashed talent at points and is worth another look at this kind of trip.

                                Fair Grounds - Race #7
                                Picks Notes
#7 Tizafeelin She's the likely second choice in a race that doesn't appear to have a ton of depth outside of the chalk, and she presumably has some upside while moving into a high-powered Tom Amoss barn.
#5 Curvette Tough to argue with her form through two starts -- both in solid, quick races -- and she'll lose the blinkers while shipping east for this first start out of the Asmussen barn. Think she can be tough here but she's almost surely overbet.
#3 Miami Rose Longshot doesn't seem to have much of a claim on anything bigger than a piece of this, but she ran okay on a full-size oval over the summer at Evangeline and probably has a little room to come forward on the move to the local footing. Price for a tiny share.
Race Summary Tizafeelin and Curvette figure tough to get past in here, but the former should offer a better price and has some upside in this spot that Curvette may not have while moving out of the Baffert barn.

                                Fair Grounds - Race #9
                                Picks Notes
#9 A G's Charlotte Her mom was a pretty nice runner around these parts in her day, and this one came out with an impressive debut score that hinted maybe there is a little something here. Would feel plenty attractive at something like the 8/1 ML price, as she can be a handful here if she takes even a small step in the right direction. Happy to aggressively single here to close the card.
#4 Free Like a Girl No doubt she's the one to beat after rattling off three straight stakes scores before coming up short behind a huge longshot in the local debut last time out. She's clearly capable with these.
#2 Serape She might not have as high a ceiling as some of these, but she has been pretty reliable when racing without blinkers, and her one-turn form from earlier in the career is interesting enough to think she can share here.
Race Summary A G's Charlotte caught the eye in a nice debut win when tracking the pace and finishing past with ease late, and she should be in line for a brilliant trip from the outside here. Solid play in the final race of the year. Happy New Year!
