The horse racing tips for Sunday, January 2, 2022

The Quinté + on Sunday January 2 is scheduled at the Vincennes racecourse in the discipline of trotting. Find below our predictions for this race as well as our bet of the day and our bet of madness in two other races on the menu of the day.
THE PRONOS OF THE QUINTE OF 2 JANUARY
          Frédéric Kita

          7 Vivid Wise As (FAVORI)

Frédéric Kita’s favorite is the 7 Vivid Wise As, an Italian trotter with a lot of speed and who is well known on French soil.

          14 Gu d’Héripre (OUTSIDER)

Its outsider is the 14 Gu d’Héripré, absent since April but able to shine from the start.
          Lionel charbonnier

          4 Don Fanucci Zet

Lionel Charbonnier believes that the 4 Don Fanucci Jet, winner of the 2021 Elitloppet, can strike a big blow for his debut in France.

She just finished second in the benchmark race in a good style. First chance.

She’s better than her last attempts. Must be taken back for a place.

              Horse Racing Picks

Most Likely Winner: (Race 4: Perfect Happiness #1, 7/2):

Trainer Brad Cox is just getting warmed up in Hot Springs, and everyone needs to be warned … when the reigning Eclipse Award winner gets going, he can be unstoppable. This daughter of Majesticperfection already has a win over the Oaklawn dirt back in December, and she is looking for more. Florent Geroux guided her ably last time to a score. The effort was from just off the pace, and I would expect a repeat of last time. Cox finds ways to spot his charges, and I like this level as yet another chance for a score.

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #1

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Napa Valley #13, 20/1):

I do not normally pick an “AE,” but this is one of those instances where it might be necessary. I am hoping that Norm Cash's newly-turned 3-yr-old by Flatter is ready to make his 3rd start for the barn. I know he might not look like much, but this is a hunch play. At max odds, I like the action, and I would like to see David Cabrera rise to the occasion. Watch out for this one, if he makes it in. You do not see a 5-day runbacker all that much in horse racing ... What is this, 1932? Cash has confidence in this one, and I do too.

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #13 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 6F, AOC50k, 4+):

This race, an AOC50k, looks awfully tough. Once again, Brad Cox and Steve Asmussen will do battle. The latter wrestled the Churchill Nov. Training Title away from former. Now, they send Full Impact #10 and Whiskey Double #11 up against one another. Cox's 5-yr-old by Street Sense only has 2 races under his belt, which is rather remarkable, especially considering the current state of the sport. Gary and Mary West had this one with Kelly Breen, but now he comes to the Cox Barn. Back at Aqueduct, and before that, Monmouth, he ran every opponent off the track. Let's face it, Oaklawn, and its competition, are going to be a different kettle of fish. I much prefer Asmussen's entry, but even with Ricardo Santana, it will not be a cinch coming off-the-bench. We have not seen this son of Into Mischief since late May. I want to use both of these fine runners, but as for a tip-top choice, I think Ron Moquett's Upstriker #7 looks best. This colt by Upstart looks primed for a breakthrough score. He has a win over the track, and it was a good one by 6-lengths back in early May. David Cabrera, who was just speaking about, appears to work well with this conditioner. It would be nice to see Moquett, a local Hot Springs mainstay, get this win!

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 7/10/11

                Today’s Racing Tips – January 2nd

There are four meetings in Britain and Ireland on Sunday, with jumps action from Ayr, Plumpton and Naas. The big betting race
of the day is likely to be the marathon Sussex National at 2.20pm, with the 3m4f trip an extreme test and local trainer Gary Moore sure to have one of his red hot team lined up to land the valuable prize. There is competitive all-weather action from Newcastle, where four competitive handicaps are sure to test all punters winner-finding skills.

                Plumpton12:08 PM

Chris Gordon’s bumper winner was well backed for his course and distance hurdling debut, but found the useful Stream of Stars just too strong having been left with plenty of ground to make up from rear. He is likely to get a more positive ride here from Tom Cannon, and is expected to get off the mark at the second time of asking.

                Plumpton 1:45 PM

Laura Morgan’s unexposed novice has caught the eye in both runs so far, and is just the type to do a lot better now going handicapping for the first time (with Adam Wedge a very good booking). The step up to 2m4f seems sure to suit, and this former Irish pointer should have no problems with the expected testing ground conditions.

                    Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 2nd January 2022
By: Racing & Sports Time published 2022-01-02 at 12:06 PM (GMT +11:00)

                    CRANBOURNE: RACE 5 @ 3:20 PM

BLACK PENN (3) has progressed nicely in two runs back from a spell and looks ready to win out to this trip third up with the Blinkers going on. He can race handy to the speed from an inside draw and should be hard to hold out at the finish. DOGMATIC (1) is a talented horse on his day having mixed it with Smokin' Romans and Declares War over a middle distance last time in. He's suited first up in this grade and a forward showing wouldn't surprise. BUCKLAND ABBEY (4) ran out an easy Maiden winner second up last start when ridden closer. Although this is tougher he appeals each way now he's found winning form. PAINT ME RED (2) will make his own luck on speed but this is the outer limits of his distance range, so a clever ride will be required and no doubt provided by Newitt. PINDI PRIDE (9) only went down narrowly last start over this trip and she's ready to show her best approaching peak fitness and up in grade. SELECTION: Black Penn looks ready to win.

                    Cranbourne Computer Card

                    BALLINA: RACE 2 @ 2:05 PM

BONDURANT (5) displayed plenty of early toe over 1600m at this track last time, leading them into the lane before digging deep to win by a head. Has the pace to lead again and although up in grade gets a bit of weight relief. Hard to toss on a six-day turnaround. DORSET COAST (1) was sent out at $17 last time but ran above expectations and won over 1800m at Gold Coast. Goes very well here, never missing the frame in three starts. Serious threat. TOOTS IS TOPS (4) was a most impressive winner last time over 1410m at this track, scoring by 3 lengths to make it two on the trot. Record here is sound with three wins from eight starts. Should be involved in the finish again. MOUNT HEIDI (6) was 3.8 lengths away in third last time at this track after being in the firing line on cornering. Has not won for a long while but must be respected. KING FAROUK (8) has been in the money at all four runs over this trip. In the mix off the inside alley. SELECTION: #5 Bondurant to win again.

                    GILGANDRA: RACE 3 @ 2:30 PM

Former Godolphin galloper AMULET STREET (1) has done everything but win with seven placings from eight starts and will appreciate the drop in grade here. Has placed on all going and revved up for this with an easy Dubbo trial. Is clearly the one they all have to run down. ANSELMO (2) resumes but has placed two from two when fresh and gets 2kg off with the claim. Draws the inside alley and looks a serious danger. BERNFORME (3) put in a career-best performance when a close-up second when resuming and can go on with it now. In the mix. AMERICAN ANTHEM (9) is a consistent conveyance hitting the top five at her past nine outings. Looks a must for the multiples. SHE'S SUPER (11) has placed over this distance and may earn some minor money. SELECTION: Amulet Street to win.

SUNSHINE COAST: RACE 6 @ 4:05 PM (AEDT)

AMITY GAL (1) first starter who trialled like a first-up winner when scoring in a trial here by five lengths. Should be winning for fun. RUSTY ROSE (8) resumes from a spell of 42 weeks following a debut run at Ipswich when placing second of eight runners. Placed in both recent trials and is an each-way chance. IMMEDIATE RESPONSE (5) was in the money last start when running second at Sunshine Coast when resuming over 1000m. Will strip fitter today and won't be far away at the line. WATACHOICE (13) placed at long odds here last start when badly checked at the start. With clear-air today she can run into a place. SELECTION: Amity Gal looks best of good things here.

                    TERANG: RACE 6 @ 4:20 PM

SACRED PALACE (2) won two of last three runs before a spell, the latest in town at Caufield. Has won fresh and trip suits. Talented gelding with plenty of upside and rates the testing material off the low draw. DUNBRODY POWER (4) finished seventh last start beaten 3 lengths at Flemington over 1200m and the run was much better than it looked after a slow start. Strong chance to take this. KAAKIT AKIT (7) will be rock-hard fit now following a nice effort at Moonee Valley last start when fourth. HINT OF MINT (5) can play a role in the finish while fresh. SELECTION: Like Sacred Palace fresh.

                    ESPERANCE: RACE 4 @ 6:10 PM (AEDT)

ROYAL SOLDIER (1) has won his last two races on the course in style and in a short career to date looks to be very promising. There is no reason that he can't make it three in a row today. FAIR JUSTICE (5) closed strongly from midfield last start to just get up by a nose and finally reward her punters that have sent her out favourite at her last three outings. She will be suited to the mile more than most here and should be very hard to beat again. SALVARA (6) fought on well for her third placing last start in a similar sort of field and from her handy draw should be able to settle close to the pace. Has a good record here and should be included in all multiples. WARZACHANTZ (8) has gone to another level this season with two impressive wins to open his campaign. He is racing as though the extra 200 metres should be no problem and with some early luck will be right there at the finish. Watch closely. SELECTION: Royal Soldier win bet.

                      Aqueduct January 2, 2022

                      Race 6: Claiming

#1 Fair Regis will take a nice drop down in class for this race, which looks to be needed after a couple of tough starts in a row. #6 Bustin Bay will look to make it two in a row today, while running first off the claim for Falcone.

                      Race 7: Claiming
                      freestar

#10 Queentigua ran second at this level last time out over this track. Her speed figures suggest she can win in this spot. #4 Captivating Cara broke her maiden last time out in impressive fashion, and is spotted in a race where she can make it two in a row today.

                      Race 8: La Verdad Stakes

#4 Bank Sting was a blowout winner last time, and should win against this group with a similar effort. #5 Letmetakethiscall has speed figures in her past races over this track that will make her competitive today.

                      Race 9: Maiden Claiming

#4 Forty Two Ace looks to be the lone speed in todays contest, while also possessing speed figures that look to be a little better than this group. #1A Shinjuku has speed figures over this track that make him competitive, but must be prepared off of the layoff.

                        RACE 1: FLOWER MOON (#2)

From a speed figure standpoint, Precipitate is an omnifig – all of her numbers are faster than the best figures earned by any of her rivals.. It’s obviously a concern that she’s been off for so long, but she was cut out to be a pretty good horse at this time last year. She faced some pretty good rivals in her prior races, as Miss Brazil, Caramel Swirl, and Obligatory have all gone on to become stakes winners since beating her early in her career. Chad can win off layoffs, but she’s going to be an awfully short price. Her main rival is the other Chad Brown trainee Default Protection. She took plenty of money in her debut here last month but didn’t make much of an impression, just staying on mildly for third. That wasn’t the strongest maiden field for the level, which is one of the reasons why she took so much money as the new face. Now she stretches out, which shouldn’t pose a major problem. While Chad Brown is 16 for 48 (33%) with 3YO+ maidens going from sprints to dirt routes in their 2nd starts over the past 5 years, the ROI is just $1.27, suggesting these types are often overbet. I’m most interested in a different second time starter. Flower Moon was claimed out of her debut for $50k and now moves up in class in her first start off the claim for Linda Rice. This barn is an impressive 18 for 38 (47%, $2.64 ROI) first off the claim with maidens on dirt over the past 5 years and 10 for 19 (53%, $3.21 ROI) in dirt routes within that sample. She showed good early speed in the debut before getting reeled in by the heavy favorite. That was a slow race, but this long-striding filly gave the impression of one who should stretch out. She figures to lead this field early, and could take them a long way.

RACE 5: ORDER OF MAGNITUDE (#7)

Long Term figures to attract support as he stretches out for his second career start. His debut was somewhat lackluster considering the lack of depth to that field and the fact that he got a great trip sitting on top of a slow pace. However, he may appreciate more ground given that he’s a son of Curlin out of a dam who was best in dirt routes. Todd Pletcher is 5 for 9 (56%, $3.69 ROI) with maiden second time starters in 9-furlong dirt races at Aqueduct over the past 5 years. There are things to like, but I’m skeptical that he’ll be much of a price. Among those with positive dirt experience, I prefer Constitutionlawyer. This horse has run well in both career starts. He’s obviously been targeted at races that require stamina from the start of his career, and he might just be a runner who has needed to race into fitness. He closed well behind some very good rivals in his debut and then overcame a wide trip last time over a very demanding surface. I want him more than Perfect Flight out of that race. Yet I’m going in a different direction for my top pick. Order of Magnitude has to improve to beat this field, but I don’t think we’ve yet seen the best of this colt. He had no chance in his debut when his rider guided him down to the rail on a day when you wanted to be off the inside. He rode the inside path until the stretch and just raced greenly. They stretched him out on turf next time, but he’s not really bred to be a turf horse. He seems like one that wants more ground, so I like him finally getting the chance to go two turns on dirt. Chad Brown is 9 for 30 (30%, $2.40 ROI) in 9F dirt races at Aqueduct over the past 5 years.

                        RACE 6: VIOLENT POINT (#5)

Bustin Bay figures to vie for favoritism as she makes her first start off the claim for Rob Falcone. She’s moving up in class out of cheaper races, but she has run competitive speed figures in most of her recent starts. That said, she is getting claimed off a trainer who was been on a roll in New York lately, so she has to hold her form and do so against a tougher field. I’m not way against her, but I think there are other viable options at better prices. Fair Regis makes sense as she drops in class after finding a New York-bred optional claimer to be too tough for her last time. Her overall form is a bit spotty but she’s run plenty of races that are good enough to beat this field. The one drawback is the fact that she drew the rail in a race that features other speed to her outside, so she could get outrun in the early stages. My top pick is Violent Point. This filly’ recent form is better than it appears. She ran deceptively well two back at Saratoga when she stumbled badly at the start and recovered to rally for second at a higher level. She didn’t run well last time at Finger Lakes, but she was going out for a barn that has been pretty cold lately. Now she’s switching into the stable of Linda Rice, who places her realistically at the $25k claiming level. She’s handled wet tracks in the past and she has the early speed to get into a stalking position behind likely leader Quality Stones. I think she could fly under the radar and go off at a square price in a race where I don’t trust many of her rivals.

Al Cimaglia: Pompano Park Pick 4 Analysis-$15,000 Guaranteed Pool

                          January 2, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Pompano Park has a 9-race card with the feature coming in Race 6, an Open Pace with a $14,200 purse. The 0.50 Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $15,000 guaranteed pool with a 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                          Race 6

1-When You Dance (7-1)-Has gate speed to get an up-close seat and could be up for a big try versus Open company starting from the rail. Comes off a nice win and could trip out to take another picture at a solid price.
2-Seeing Eye Single (6-1)-Hoosier invader has a good gate speed and will take a swing team Miller will have this 7-year-old ready to fire hot off the bench. Should fit with this bunch and is another that can offer a solid price.
4-Rebellious (5/2)-Hennessey could muscle his way to the top and then back the pace down. So, can't leave off the ticket but will hope for others with more value.
6-Actor Hanover (3-1)-Wallis owns, trains and drives and he had this 6-year-old dialed on extra high last week. Fired out and got on the engine with a .26 opening quarter and never looked back. Blistered the mile in 149.2 to set a lifetime mark. If that same effort happens tonight, it should be picture time, but it may not be as easy.

                          Race 7

2-Dealt A Winner (2-1)-Class showed in last week and bumps up here but shouldn't matter if comes with a similar effort. This will be the 3rd start off the bench and could be the best showing yet.
6-Villiam (9/2)-This 5-year-old knows how to win but will need to bring his best to get it done at this level. Best to respect if #2 doesn't bring his fastball. Can leave and be forwardly placed. This 5-year-old was the top money winner in the field for 2021 and did post 9 wins in 36 starts.

                          Race 8

2-My House (9-1)-There are risks if using this Shetler trainee. Does break stride but can also come right back to be posing the following week. Will look for a price in this leg and leave out the program chalk #7.
3-Aged Cheddar (7/2)-Has finished 2nd in the last 3 races and could finally close the deal here. Drops after finishing behind a 149.4 winner. This is a one-move type and should be in striking range with this post draw.
5-Peter Dalt (12-1)-Macomber returns to steer his own and has good gate speed to get a jump on the morning line chalk. Comes off a big try from post 7 versus this kind in last and has hit the board in 14 of 16 here with 5 wins. Looks like a live price play who could get the top and control the fractions.

                          Race 9

7-Brilliant Strike N (7/2)-Plano trainee should be a player at this level. Needs a good trip and an honest pace but will respect chances of that happening.
8-Song Cycle Senese (3-1)-Made the most of an efficient trip and a 55.4 back-half to win at even money versus this kind in last. Miller sticks and should have this 7-year-old in the hunt at the wire.

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TPC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
                            *
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 individual
algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100 point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

Use (in order of preference): 7-Ultimate Bango; 9-Exultation; 6-Barraza; 1-Coulthard

Forecast: As this is penned, the Sunday opener is scheduled to be run down the Hill (yesterday’s Hillside races were transferred to the flat course). It’s a wide-open scramble with several possibilities; best advice is to include as many as your budget allows. Ultimate Bango (TOC=5/2; ML=8-1) appears to offer good wagering value at 8-1 on the morning line, so we’ll give the veteran gelding a slight edge on top. Most recently a fast-finishing but too-late third in the Oakland Stakes at Golden Gate Fields, the M. Glatt-trained seven-year-old has been first or second in seven of 12 career starts over the local lawn but is winless in the last two years, so he’s certainly overdue. With some help up front, he’ll be heard from late. Exultation (TOC=7-1; ML-6-1) is another that offers good value at 6-1 on the morning line. Freshened since July, the P. Eurton-trained gelding has run well over this course and distance in the past and has been given a strong foundation of training track drills to have him fit and ready. The presence of Johnny V. in the saddle certainly won’t hurt. Barraza (TOC=9/2; ML=7/2 scored handsomely in a Hillside sprint during the fall meeting and may have found his niche as a turf sprinter. He’s competitive on numbers for a barn that has excellent stats with freshened runners and goes for an off-the-charts jockey/trainer combo of K. Desormeaux and V. Cerin. Coulthard picks up F. Prat and seems to be getting sharper, according to his morning drills. We’ve always considered him to be most effective as a late-running turf sprinter.

                            Notable Workouts:

Coulthard (December 28, Santa Anita, 4f, :49h TT). Grade: B View Workout Video
In blinkers, breezing throughout while even but best with Bill Buckner (same time) in training track drill for P. D’Amato. Been a bit rusty in his two comeback races but seems to be getting fitter and sharper now. Most effective sprinting on grass.

Ultimate Bango (December 16, Santa Anita, 4f, :49.4h). Grade: B

Half mile main track drill, splits :24.2 and :49.4, very light late coaxing. Appeared eager and maintains his form.

Use (in order of preference): 10-Copper Go Ten; 1-She’s Bulletproof; 6-Madiha

Forecast: Here’s another challenging affair, this one for state-bred maiden fillies sprinting six furlongs on turf. The known element doesn’t look all that formidable so let’s take a flyer on a fresh face. Copper Bo Ten, listed at 15-1 on the morning line, is bred to be quick and should handle turf as well, and while the extreme outside draw does her no favors the C. Gaines-trained sophomore, based on a recent gate drill (see below) appears to have dangerous early speed. If she can shake loose or at worst inherit a nice stalking trip, the daughter of Grazen certainly could pull of an upset. She’s Bulletproof represents stranger danger from San Luis Rey Downs. A full-sister to the quick multiple turf sprint stakes winner Bulletproof One, she gets the rail and Johnny V. and could be quicker than her modest workout clockings indicate. Madiha adds Lasix, has the route-to-sprint angle, and exits a couple of much tougher Cal-bred stakes races, so we’re expecting improvement from this daughter of Shaman Ghost. She doesn’t really have a turf pedigree, maybe she like it, anyway.

                            Notable Workouts:

Copper Bo Ten (December 18, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.4hg). Grade: B-
                            View Workout Video
Fairly nice gate drill with Elegance Code (same time) for C. Gaines, under a nice hold throughout and able to go faster if permitted, splits of :36.3, :49.1 and 1:01.4, always traveling the easier of the two and a tad the best late. Has enough speed to worry state-bred foes and seems fit enough.

Single (in order of preference): 1-Edgeway

Forecast: Edgeway (TOC=2/5; ML=Even) earned a career top speed figure when finishing an excellent second in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint-G1 last time out and did so despite racing along the deeper inside lanes most of the way. Freshened and working as well as ever, the J. Sadler-trained daughter of Competitive Edge rates the top billing over the other main player, Merneith (TOC=4-1; ML=9/5, winner of the Santa Monica S.-G2 last February but off the track since. The works are okay, and the career top 97 Beyer speed figure she earned in her last outing would make her dangerous but we’d prefer to see one first, so we’ll take a stand with Edgeway as a short-priced single.

                            Notable Workouts:

                            Edgeway (December 18, Santa Anita, 5f, :59.2h). Grade: B+

Solo five furlong drill, never really asked, plenty left at the wire, final half mile in :23 flat and :47 flat. Maintains her top form.

Much best over Spielberg (5f, 1:00h), final three furlongs in :24.2 and :37.1 on our watches so we doubt she went as fast as official clocking, mildly ridden to the wire and then asked a bit traveling out to the seven furlong pole. Decent work but not much more than that.

Use (in order of preference: 8-Taming the Tigress; 2-That’s Amare

Forecast: Although she is winless in three career starts on grass (two seconds and a third) and failed as the favorite in her last two outings, Taming the Tigress (TOC=5/2; ML=3-1) looks very much like the one to beat in this six furlong dash for first-level allowance state-bred fillies and mares. The route-to-sprint angle should be in full effect for the daughter of Smiling Tiger, who we suspect is much more comfortable around one turn, and after being reunited with “win rider” F. Prat she should be able to produce a winning late kick. Though she loses regular F. Prat, That’s Amare (TOC=6/5; ML=3-1) is the darling of the analytics despite her lack of recent activity. Away since April but returning with a series of Los Alamitos workouts that should have her fit enough, the daughter of Unusual Heat likes to settle in the second flight and take hold late and projects to enjoy that type of trip today. These are the two we’ll be using in rolling exotic play with a slight preference on top to Taming the Tigress.

Use (in order of preference): 6-It’s a Riddle; 4-Busy Paynter; 3-Your Royal Coin

Forecast: We’ll go three deep in this $10,000 claiming sprint for older distaffers, with It’s a Riddle (TOC=9/5; ML=5/2) logically the one to beat with this return to her winning level. The B. Hess, Jr.-trained mare clearly qualifies under the horse-for-course theory (all three of her wins have come at Santa Anita) and the projected race-shape scenario should allow her to enjoy her preferred pace-prompting trip. Busy Paynter (TOC=5-1; ML=3-1), freshened since mid-October, is another that is particularly fond of the local dirt strip and will be happy to return home, having won half of her six races here but making her first local start since May of 2020. She’s the quickest in the field, and if she can shake loose early without undue pressure the D. Blacker-trained mare could get very brave. Your Royal Coil (TOC=2-1; ML-4-1) deserves a look as well. First or second in four of eight starts over the Santa Anita main oval, the Los Alamitos-based mare has been facing tougher of late and projects to be forwardly placed with dead aim throughout.

                            Notable Workouts:

Busy Paynter (December 18, Santa Anita, 4f, :48.2h). Grade: B-

Been away since October but seems in good shape off the layoff and should be competitive with moderate claiming fillies and mares over a main track she likes.

Use (in order of preference: 3-Secret Club; 6-Impossible Task; 7-Ottawa Fire

Forecast: Secret Club (TOC=5/2; ML=4-1)seems as good as any in this starter’s allowance turf miler and is reasonably priced at 4-1 on the morning line. Both of his career wins were accomplished over this turf course, and having finished in the frame in each of his last four starts the son of Clubhouse Ride appears set to break through for another score. Nicely drawn towards the inside and switching to Johnny V., he’ll be doing his best work from the quarter pole home. Impossible Task (TOC=3-1; ML=6-1)earned a career top speed figure when a close third in a tougher spot on dirt at Del Mar in mid-November but the switch to grass shouldn’t be an issue, as the son of Liam’s Map has run well over this turf course in the past. He looks very much like the controlling speed and given that trip could take this field a long way. Ottawa Fire (TOC=7-1; ML=5-1) should be included on your ticket as well. He’s a first-off-the-claim for B. Hess, Jr. following a restricted (nw-2) $32,000 win at Del Mar with a number that makes him a threat right back. The fact that his new connections protect him tells us he’s doing well and ready for a forward move.

Use (in order of preference): 6-Lonely On Top; 1-Midnight’s Girl; 2-Head Start; 8-Nang Singha

Forecast: Maiden $40,000 sophomore fillies sprint six furlongs in a spread race in which nothing would surprise. We’ll use four and hope that’s enough to get us through it. Lonely On Top has displayed some early speed when facing infinitely tougher foes in her first two outings and should greatly appreciate this drop into the maiden claiming ranks. Her recent workouts at San Luis Rey Downs indicate she’s doing well, so we’ll give her a very slight edge on top. Midnight’s Girl also is making the maiden-to-maiden-claiming class drop while trying conventional dirt for the first time. Against this group she should be able to put her best stuff on display. Head Start, away since the fall, has trained okay for her return and is another that should be capable of producing a forward move, while Nang Singha has shown enough in the a.m. to be tossed in as well.

Forecast: This year’s renewal of the Blue Norther S. for sophomore fillies over a mile on turf contains several question marks. Rather than spread deeply, let’s just stick with the two ‘D’Amato entrants.Helens Well (TOC=9/5; ML=5/2) always tries hard, but her lack of tactical speed is a concern. She closed well but too late when fourth beaten less than a length in the Jimmy Durante S.-G3 at Del Mar in late November and faces a similar assignment today. The good news is that the early fractions in today’s affair should be quick enough to compliment her style, so with clear sailing the Irish-bred filly may be along in time. D’Amato’s other import, Bellabel (TOC=5-1; ML=3-1)attracts F. Prat for her U.S. debut and has form overseas that puts her squarely in the hunt. She likes to settle early and blast home and Euros from this stable almost always fire big shots in their “first-off-the-plane” outings.

                            Single: 3-American Theorem

Forecast: It took a very fast horse (Essential Wager) to deny American Theorem (TOC=4/5; ML=9/5) a win at Los Alamitos last month when the son of American Pharoah stayed on bravely before settling for second money despite earning a strong, career top speed figure. This will be his third start off a layoff, so theoretically it should be his best, and while the G. Papaprodromou-trained ridgeling has had his problems over the years, when he’s healthy he’s pretty fast. He’s stretching out to a distance we’re anticipating he can handle and we’re hoping to see him on the lead from the get-go. Let’s make this once-promising 5-year-old a rolling exotic single and a play in the win pool at or near his morning line of 9/5.

Use (In order of preference): 4-Maglev; 5-Handy Dandy; 8-Boise

Forecast: The finale is a challenging renewal of the Eddie Logan S. for 3-year-olds over a mile on turf that includes the intriguing European shipper Maglev (TOC=7/2; ML=5/2) . The son of Galileo makes his U.S. debut for M. Glatt showing a recent bullet half mile training track drill (:47 3/5, fastest of 24) and Timeform ratings that are good enough to make him quite competitive in stakes company on this circuit. This will be his first try over a distance of ground, but his pedigree suggests the longer the better. Handy Dandy (TOC=6-1; ML=5-1) probably didn’t beat a whole lot when he graduated at this distance on grass at Del Mar, but he was visually impressive and strikes us as a gelding with some potential. He has a good stalking style and speed figures that make him a legit threat right back. Northern California stakes winner Boise (TOC=7-1; ML=4-1) returns to his home base in California with rising numbers and dangerous closing kick. The son of Temple City picks up F. Prat, who won a few races yesterday (six, to be exact). These are the three we’ll be including in rolling exotic play with preference on top to Maglev.

Jerry Shottenkirk: My Late Pick 4 Ticket Sunday at Gulfstream

                              January 2, 2022 | By Jerry Shottenkirk

Ending the Late Pick 4 with a single can bring a high level of suspense if you are alive for that finale, and that’s the target strategy today at Gulfstream Park.

Royal Spirit will carry the weight as the favorite in the 10th. The Todd Pletcher charge comes off a fourth-place finish in the Awad Stakes at Belmont and prior to that he was second in the Nownownow Stakes at Monmouth.

Those are decent credentials for a stakes race, but he’s in a maiden race this time and has a good chance to dominate.

The suggested Late Pick 4 this week amounts to $63, and here’s a look at the players:

                              7th Race (3:37 p.m. ET, claiming)

SKYWALKING is the price choice in a wide-open race that could go any of six ways. The pick here has improved in his last three and was a closing third at this level two races ago.

Has enough speed to get into hunt earlier and has the late energy to pose a big threat at 10-1 on the line.

Also on the ticket: VINNY DREAM, CHROME FINISH, SWEENEY’S CAT, ASTROTURF, GONNA BE EPIC.

8th Race (4:11 p.m. ET, allowance optional claiming)

TOWN CLASSIC was along for second at Keeneland last out and was claimed by Saffie Joseph, Jr., who is hitting at 30 percent in his first race off the claim.

This one comes back for the same claiming price and has some nice efforts to his credit, including a third in the G3 Runhappy in June at Belmont, when he finished behind Firenze Fire. For this price, you have to think he has a decent chance at it, and the seven furlongs could help him.

He comes in with blinkers off, which also could work in his favor.
Also on the ticket: BAGBOSS, UPHOLD THE LAW.

9th Race (4:42 p.m. ET, allowance optional claiming)

The ALL button is utilized in this one, and of the seven in the race, SHORT CIRCUIT has a chance to record a win at a good price.

She’s been competitive at this level, moves over to the Tapeta and gets Paco Lopez in the saddle, which is often a good thing at Gulfstream, or anywhere for that matter.

She has lacked speed lately and does her best when she’s in a stalking position early. Lopez will probably have her in decent shape.

                              Also on the ticket: ALL.

                              10th Race (5:14 p.m. ET, claiming)

ROYAL SPIRIT sees maidens for the first time since he was third in his debut, and he became stakes-placed in his next start.

Pletcher has shown his dominance with a 12 of 26 record at Gulfstream, and he can bump it up even more here.

Also on the ticket; NONE (single).

Gulfstream Park 50-cent Late Pick 4:
                              7) #4 Vinny Dream, #5 Chrome Finish, #7 Skywalking, #8 Sweeney’s Cat, #10 Astroturf, #11 Gonna Be Epic.
                              8) #1 Bagboss, #4 Town Classic, #6 Uphold the Law.
                              9) ALL (7 horses)
                              10) #2 Royal Spirit.
The ticket: 4-5-7-8-10-11 with 1-4-6 with ALL with 2 ($63).

                                Picks Notes
#10 Duepeg She's going to be a big price from the outside while getting blinkers on today, and she's probably not all that far off what it would take to land a big piece of this with the equipment change.
#3 Savvy Shipman She has a right to be tough here while racing off the claim, but she's sure to be something of an underlay in a soft race. Capable of something better today.
#6 Crimson Feline She tends to run a bit evenly in the lane, but her recent form seems good enough to share underneath again over a course on which she has not historically done her best running.
Race Summary Duepeg should get lost on the board after a dull run last time out, but maybe she can move up a bit while adding blinkers, and a small step in the right direction might keep her in the frame with these.

                                Fair Grounds - Race #6
                                Picks Notes
#2 May Hour His turf sprint form has been really solid, and he just turned in a really nice effort in his first start over the course. Think he might offer a decent, mid-range type number here.
#1 Ready to Pounce He ran okay in his only turf try, and that came in his career debut here last year, and it's easy enough to see him getting a cozy trip while saving some ground from the inside.
#7 Biarritz He has some really solid positional pace to put to use here, and he just posted a win at this level in his most recent start. Something similar would keep him in the mix today.
Race Summary May Hour is worth a look here after turning in a really nice run here last time out, and he seems to have found his home on the turf at this point in time. Something like the 5/1 ML price would be attractive.

                                Fair Grounds - Race #7
                                Picks Notes
#2 Math Wizard Class has earned nearly $1.2 million while still eligible for this N2X, and he might find this group more to his liking at this point in time. Look for him late in the lane.
#3 O Besos He's another getting some class relief after finding himself on the Derby Trail last year, and he has knocked heads with some tough customers over this course in the past. Big claim on this at a likely short price.
#5 Awe Shackle He's nowhere near the best horse in this bunch, but he has a little bit of longshot appeal as cheap speed. He chased and faded going short last time out, but he should be able to control the tempo in a spot where the logical players will be running from a bit off it.
Race Summary Math Wizard and O Besos are probably tough in here, but the former might offer a slightly better number and has the classier company lines. Guessing one of those two classy types will land this.
