The horse racing tips for Tuesday, January 4, 2022

The Quinté + of Tuesday January 4 is scheduled at the Vincennes racecourse in the discipline of trotting. Find below our predictions for this race as well as our bet of the day and our bet of madness in two other races on the menu of the day.
THE PRONOS OF THE QUINTE OF JANUARY 4
          Dimitri Blanleuil

          11 Evariste du Bourg (Favorite)

He’s a great horse that caused a stir here on his penultimate attempt. The attraction of the race.

          5 Dreamer de Chenu (Outsider)

He has been unhappy several times in a row and he finds a lot in his tracks. Can play second place.
          Lionel charbonnier

          13 Sweetness of the Oak

Lionel Charbonnier thinks that the 13 Douceur du Chêne should play a very good role in this event.
          BET OF THE DAY

Well entered and having triumphed easily in the last place, it promises to be formidable for the victory.
          THE MADNESS BET

Delicate but gifted, she seems able to impose herself if she is wise.

Best Horse Racing Bets for Tuesday, January 4, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

I went to Mahoning Valley Race Course, Parx Racing, and Turf Paradise for my horseracing picks for the first Tuesday of this new year, and was rewarded with quite a few underdogs with real potential.

Mahoning Valley yielded up the most potentially profitable horses with a couple of fourth-favored picks, and both Parx and Turf Paradise only required me to back one favorite apiece, overing instead a fistful of underdog moneymakers for our wagering entertainment. Talk about starting the new year right!

Don’t forget that you can find the entire race cards for all three tracks with a quick click on our recommended horseracing wagering sites.

            Good luck!
My Tuesday Picks for Mahoning Valley Race Course

We start on the main track with race two, a one-mile allowance optional claiming race for three-year-old’s and upward. My money’s on the fourth-favored (at 6/1) Double Deep, ridden by top jockey Angel I. Diaz.

While the competition will be fierce among this short field of six, this seven-year-old gelding has shown he has what it takes to pose for pictures in the winner’s circle: 35 money finishes in 56 career starts, with 13 wins. His 2021 stats show that he’s only improved with age: eleven money finishes in 16 starts, five of those wins.

Longtime horseracing veteran James R. Jackson trains Double Deep for Premier Stables Unlimited. Jackson has put Diaz in the irons for Double Deep’s last three races, resulting in one third-place finish and two wins.

Race six is a six-furlong allowance run on the dirt track for three-year-old’s and upward. I like the fourth-favored entry (at 5/1) in this race, as well: Galactic, with jockey David J. Haldar aboard.
This six-year-old gelding moneyed 21 of his 38 career starts, winning seven, but 2021 was his best year: Eight money finishes in eleven starts, five of those wins.

Thirty-five-year racing veteran James H. McDonald trains Galactic for owner Ulises Cacho. McDonald has tapped Haldar to saddle Galactic for his most recent three races.

Race seven is a six-furlong allowance race on the dirt track for three-year-old’s that have never won two races. I’m going to agree with the morning-line for this race and bet my two dollars on the 3/1 favorite, Mutual Confidence, piloted by Luis Alberto Batista.

This four-year-old gelding moneyed three of his five career starts, winning one—his initial maiden attempt. He most recently finished in the money twice with second- and third-place finishes in allowance races here at Mahoning Valley.

Cirilo Gorostieta trains Mutual Confidence for owners Westbrook Stables, LLC, Angela Lewis, and Todd Lewis. Gorostieta put Batista aboard Mutual Confidence for his last two runs as well has his maiden victory.
            Tuesday Picks for Parx Racing

Let’s start on the main track with race one, a claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won four races. My money’s on the 7/2 second-favored entry, Double Doink, ridden by top jockey Frankie Pennington.

This five-year-old mare has the most encouraging record in this six-horse field: four money finishes in ten career starts, with three of those wins. In 2021, she won three of her six starts.

John C. Servis, who won the 2004 Triple Crown with Smarty Jones, trains Double Doink for Main Line Racing Stable.

Race six is a six-furlong claiming race on the main track for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have not won a race since October 4, 2021 (claiming races for $8,000 or less not considered in eligibility). I’m betting my two dollars on the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Li’lbito’charm, ridden by Dexter Haddock.
This six-year-old mare finished 18 of her 29 career starts in the money, winning eight. Her 2021 record is even more encouraging: Eleven money finishes in 15 starts, six of those wins. In this ten-horse field, she’ll do.

Ralph R. Riviezzo trains Li’lbito’charm for Ylliehus 5 Star. Riviezzo has put Haddock aboard Li’lbito’charm for her last ten races.

Race nine is a seven-furlong starter optional claiming race on the main track for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the third-favored (at 9/2) Souper Fly Over, with top jockey Jaime Rodriguez in the irons.

This eight-year-old gelding finished 25 of his 48 career starts in the money, winning 14. He’s the standout in this eight-horse field.

Harold Wyner trains Souper Fly Over for owners John Fanelli and Longball Stables, LLC.
            Tuesday’s Picks for Turf Paradise

We’re on the turf course for race three, a 7-1/2 furlong run for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won two races. Looking at this lackluster field of six, I have to like the second-favored entry (at 2/1): BJ’s Spirit, piloted by Alex M. Cruz.

This four-year-old filly moneyed three of her seven career starts, winning one. Not impressive, I agree, but she takes the spotlight in this race.

BJ’s Spirit is trained by owner Andy Mathis.

We’re back on the dirt track for race six, a five-furlong stater optional claiming race for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m betting on the 4/1 second-favored Sombra Negra, ridden by Alex M. Cruz.
This seven-year-old gelding finished in the money 24 of his 38 career starts in the money, winning 14—which gives him a significant statistical lead in this eight-horse field.

Co-owner Justin R. Evans trains Sombra Negra for himself and Randy T. Thompson.

Race eight is a six-furlong claiming race for four-year-old’s and upward that have never won two races. I agree with the morning line: buy a win ticket on the 5/2 favorite, Don With the Wind, with Lindey Wade in the irons.

This four-year-old gelding moneyed five of his nine career starts, winning one. In this nine-horse field, that record puts him in the spotlight.

Longtime horseracing veteran Dan H. Dennison trains Don With the Wind for owner Nancy Betts.

                Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 4th January 2022
                By: Racing and Sports

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for January 4.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Muswellbrook and Stony Creek.

                MUSWELLBROOK: RACE 3 @ 1:55 PM

DEELOSH (11) turned in an encouraging run on debut last start, settling well back then winding up nicely to finish fourth over 1150m at Beaumont (Newcastle). Look for another barnstorming finish in this softer maiden; clearly the one they have to beat. MISHKA MAGIC (7) is fitter for two runs this prep, the latest seeing some improvement when fourth at Scone over 1100m. Perfectly drawn and open to further progress. SUPERARGO (3) is a gelding by Super One out of Galileo's Choice on debut. Showed ability in a recent trial win at Wyong. Don't underestimate. ROTHROCK (14) ran a better race last time and is worth including.
SELECTIONS: Expect #11 Deelosh to prove too strong for this lineup.

As a FREE Racing and Sports offer, below is the Muswellbrook Computer Card.

                Upload 1

                STONY CREEK: RACE 8 @ 5:00 PM

Lots of scratchings here. CADBOLL (2) looks promising. Was a close-up sixth at the Valley on debut then got off the mark before a spell. Sure to have improved and can kick off with a winning return. DOCTOR COTO (3) had little go right last time running ninth at Moe. May well be worth another chance. COMMANDING WITNESS (1) is hard to follow but was a winner this grade two back and gets chance to find best. BOULEVARDIA (8) has been over three years since a win but is trained here, has the inside and has won fresh. Can run a cheeky race.
                SELECTIONS: Keen on Cadboll.

Today's Horse Racing Tips: Tuesday January 4th

                  bettingexpert Racing editor

                  Today’s Racing Tips – January 4th

A low key Tuesday, with three meetings and the only jumps action coming from Hereford. There are four competitive
handicaps on show, and the clear of the course will be hoping for rain to ease the ground as conditions were nearly “good”
earlier in the week. All-weather fans have the polytrack at Lingfield to concentrate on, while there is a twilight meeting at
Newcastle starting at 3pm under the lights.
SELECTION Track Time (UK) Horse ODDS
DAILY NAP Hereford 2:15PM Red Rookie 2.75
VALUE ANGLE Hereford 2:50PM Ivilnoble 10.0

Best odds available as at 4pm January 3rd 2021. Odds may now differ.

                  Red Rookie

                  Hereford 2:15 pm

Emma Lavelle’s useful winning hurdler shaped well on her chasing debut at Chepstow in November, jumping well in the main but just finding Witness Protection too strong up the straight. He was then cruising along going well when falling at the 8th at Ascot last time out, and can gain compensation at Hereford on Tuesday with conditions to suit.
                  Today’s Value Angle

                  Ivilnoble

                  Hereford 2:50 pm

This exposed handicapper has only won once from 15 runs over fences, but he has fallen dramatically down the weights in the last year and showed last time at Plumpton that he is coming back to his best form. The booking of Ben Ffrench Davies taking off 7lb means he is racing off a flyweight here, and this looks a terrific opening to end a frustrating run of defeats.

THE PRONOS FROM THE QUINTE OF JANUARY 4
                    Dimitri Blanleuil

                    11 Evariste du Bourg (Favorite)

He’s a great horse that caused a sensation here on his penultimate attempt. The attraction of the race.

                    5 Dreamer de Chenu (Outsider)

He has been unhappy several times in a row and he finds a lot in his strings. Can play second place.
                    Lionel Charbonnier

                    13 Douceur du Chêne

Lionel Charbonnier thinks that the 13 Douceur du Chêne should play a very good role in this event.
                    LE BET OF THE DAY

Well entered and having triumphed easily in the last place, it promises to be formidable for the victory.
                    LE BET DE FOLIE

Delicate but gifted, she seems able to win if she is wise.

Monday Myths: It's Easier to Handicap Shorter Dirt Sprints

                        January 3, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

Welcome to a continuing handicapping series for our Monday blog space, “Monday Myths.” Each week I’ll use the power of the Betmix database to take common handicapping assumptions and either support or dispel them with data. Betmix data powers the 1/ST BET app and its features like Angler and Birddog give data-minded horseplayers a treasure trove of information in which to query your own curiosities.

                        Assumption:

It’s easier to handicap shorter dirt sprints.

                        Background:

They aren’t the most glamorous races nor at the high-profile tracks, but many handicappers believe that short dirt sprints are the easiest place to find a winner. They’re the bastion of the old expression that the race is won by the fastest horses. Is it easier to identify whose fastest in these races, and does that result in more wins?

                        Data Points:

I ran the Betmix database for every race in the country from Jan. 1, 2018 through today. I looked at races at 4-1/2 furlongs and shorter, 6 and 7 furlongs, and 1 mile to 1-1/8 miles – essentially dashes, sprints and routes.

                        //

Favorites won 42% in dirt dashes at 4-1/2 furlongs or less.
Favorites won 39% in dirt sprints at 6 to 7 furlongs.
Favorites won 37% in dirt routes at 1 mile to 1-1/8 miles.

                        //

The average price winner in dirt dashes at 4-1/2 furlongs was 4.2-1 odds.
The average price winner in dirt sprints at 6 to 7 furlongs was 5.3-1 odds.
The average price winner in dirt routes at 1 mile to 1-1/8 miles was 4.7-1 odds.

                        //

In claiming races, favorites won 43% in dirt dashes at 4-1/2 furlongs or less.
In claiming races, favorites won 37% in dirt sprints at 6 to 7 furlongs.
In claiming races, favorites won 37% in dirt routes at 1 mile to 1-1/8 miles.

                        //

In claiming races, the average price winner in dirt dashes at 4-1/2 furlongs was 4.2-1 odds.
In claiming races, the average price winner in dirt sprints at 6 to 7 furlongs was 5.1-1 odds.
In claiming races, the average price winner in dirt routes at 1 mile to 1-1/8 miles was 4.8-1 odds.

                        Overall Findings:

Dirt dashes had the highest win percentage and the lowest average odds winners, both by decided margins. The favorites won 3-5% more often in dirt dashes vs. dirt sprints and routes. The winners’ average odds in dirt dashes by between a half-point and just over a full point. When it comes to ‘cheap speed’ dirt dash favorites won 6% more readily than other races on the main track. The average price winner also was less among claiming dirt dashes.

                        Bottom line:

No doubt that the shorter the race, the more clarity in the results on dirt. If you’re barking up the cheap speed tree, than you can also say that the winning favorites in dirt dash claimer is even stronger with a bigger spread than other dirt races. These numbers affirm the assumption dirt dashes are easiest to handicap.

You can go into Betmix and run your own queries for a deeper dive into this theory and any that you can create. For instance, check how the tracks you handicap vary throughout the various distances.

                          Penn National - Race #1
                          Picks Notes
#1 Nimitz Class He exits a pretty fast race for the level when chasing an easy winner in the career debut, and he probably doesn't have to come forward too much off that try to handle this group at a playable price. Maybe he shows a bit more pace today?
#6 Risen Savior He finished just in front of the top choice when they met last out, and he was the 5/2 favorite that in his second lifetime start. He makes plenty of sense here, but he may not have quite the same upside as Nimitz Class.
#3 Buff and Shine He'll rise in class of a decent enough debut try for $25,000 when facing four others, but he's going to need better than that if he's going to handle this tougher group.
Race Summary Nimitz Class might be the second choice in here, and he can presumably step forward off a debut in which he was sent to post at 5/1 in a field of 10. Thinking there is enough upside to give him a big chance here.

                          Penn National - Race #4
                          Picks Notes
#7 Kastanyas She has never been a serious threat in any of her seven lifetime races, but she is meeting absolutely nothing here, and she has shown a touch of late interest at times -- that makes her interesting enough at a price with a habitual quitter as the chalk here.
#3 Sleepy N Joyful She'll make her 10th start tonight after failing to hold the lead in the lane last time out. The worry is that she tends to give away ground late, and she'll meet stretchout speed to her inside. Capable underlay.
#5 Eskendereya's Gift She has shown nothing through two starts, but they'll add blinkers today, and she isn't going to have to improve by much with the new equipment in order to land an underneath share in a soft spot.
Race Summary Kastanyas stretches out after passing tired horses in her local debut, and maybe she can grind along at one pace late to get the job done if Sleepy N Joyful gets weary in the lane again.

                          Penn National - Race #6
                          Picks Notes
#3 Studio B He steps up for this one off the claim, but he's in really sharp form and won at this level before. He should land a perfect pressing trip, and he might offer a price that's just attractive enough.
#1 Flank Speed There isn't a ton of serious early burn signed on in here, and he might be able to have a go of things from the fence. He has done good work from three local tries and might get brave if he doesn't take a bunch of heat out of the gate.
#6 The Sicarii He has been in with some better groups than he is going to find here, but I'm a little concerned that he's not going to get enough pace to set things up for his late rally. Overbet?
Race Summary Studio B seems plenty capable here, and the hope is he'll get a bit overlooked while rising in class in what feels like a pretty decent race for the local level. He has always done really good work here, and he figures to find an ace trip barring early trouble.

#3 SHAKEITLIKEYAMAKEIT 3yo filly blew past the pace-controlling fave to win at first asking.
#5 TERROMASUE Finished in money in half of starts in 2021, rallied for third in latest.
#6 MAKENA HANOVER Brushed to lead in last pair, notched a win and a second.
Race Summary Shakeittilyamakeit impressed in her debut victory at 7-1 odds. She was unhurried to the far turn and blocked until a rail opening in early stretch. She surged past the 7-5 pace setter, earning a playback today. Bet on her to win and place but don't expect 10-1 price.

#5 ROYHILL Carried speed the distance with first-time Lasix.
#4 MARKSMAN HANOVER Draws better post, will be running late.
Race Summary Jet J seized the moment and won when the favorite broke stride two starts back, then chased the favorites and ran third in a faster follow-up race. He's worth a 3-1 shot from the rail in the same company. Play 1-4 and 1-5 exactas.

                            Northfield Park - Race #12
                            Picks Notes
#7 SURREAL IDEAL Escaped traffic jam to finish fast-closing second.
#5 SILENT SPLENDOR Won his last six starts as the odds-on favorite.
#1 REAL VISION Hit board in last pair, draws rail, price attached.
Race Summary Surreal Ideal lost momentum when a couple rivals broke stride entering the backstretch and scattered the field. But he recovered strongly and finished full of run for second behind the 1-to-5 favorite. Bet on him to win and place.

#1 Double Deep Won two straight before losing his last one against solid starter allowance company; can dig in against these.
#3 First Citizen Led every jump and did it in quick fashion last out; would be tough to run back to that one.
#5 Little Blaker Goes for his third straight win and has been in may decent races against Ohio-breds but also has defeated open company.
Race Summary Double Deep has taken on a lot of horses that have won many races and can be a strong customer at this level.

                              Picks Notes
#3 Galactic Has shown good speed in sprints, and many of the contenders here are coming out of longer races; could dictate how it develops.
