1st race – (5) Unsociable was a game second in his debut and should graduate today. (1) Streaming Tap rallied belatedly in his debut and seems the main threat. (7) Philipsburg could be a contender in his debut. (3) Racket may be primed for a strong effort in his debut. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-5-7.
3rd race – (6) Stormy Stella was claimed by DiAngelo out of a second last time. Should be able to handle this group. (1) Pronta missed by a head in her first start and may like Tapeta. (4) Stake N Eggz was a distant second first time out and fits well here. (7) Record should appreciate the cutback to a sprint. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-6. I found plenty of underdogs and even some sleepers at the three tracks I visited for my Wednesday picks—Delta Downs, Penn National Race Course, and Tampa Bay Downs.

Tampa Bay yielded two fourth-favored moneymakers, but Delta Downs had the best surprise—a 15/1 underdog with the stats to beat those odds.

Wednesday’s Picks for Delta Downs

Let’s start on the dirt track with race two, a 6-1/2 furlong allowance race for three-year-old’s that have never won two races. I like the 9/5 morning-line favorite, D T’s Dream, ridden by Alex Birzer.

This three-year-old gelding finished in the money for both of his career starts, winning his initial maiden attempt in October and then finishing second in an allowance race in December, both at Delta Downs.

Regularly ranked among the top 100 trainers for wins, Greg Tracy trains D T’s Dream for Highfield Investment Group, Inc. Tracy has tapped Birzer to saddle D T’s Dream for both of his pro runs.

Race six is a five-furlong claiming race on the main track for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won two races. Initially, I found little to tout in this ten-horse field, but as I dug down, I eventually uncovered a 15/1 underdog worthy of a win ticket—Eponher, piloted by Don C. LeBlanc.
This six-year-old mare moneyed four of her six career starts, winning one—which gives her a better record than that of Gracesspecialtouch, the favorite in this race.

With more than three decades in the horseracing business, Donald Cormier Jr. trains Eponher for James Benoit, Peggy Bourque, and Bobby Bourque Sr.

Race seven is a 6-1/2 furlong starter allowance race on the main track for four-year-old’s and upward. My money’s on the 9/2 third-favored Sir Smack, with Kevin Roman in the irons.

This six-year-old gelding has the best stats in this eight-horse field, with ten money finishes in 15 career starts, six of those wins.

Ranked in the top 100 trainers for wins four of the last six years, Eduardo Ramirez trains Sir Smack for owner Sandy Badeaux.
My Wednesday Picks for Penn National Race Course

We’re on the dirt track for race one, a one mile and 70 yards claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. My money’s on the second-favored (at 3/1) Desbordes, with Carlos Eduardo Lopez aboard.

This five-year-old mare is better than a cursory look at her overall record would indicate: Nine money finishes in 22 career starts, seven of those wins. Her record for the last 12 months tells the better story: Four money finishes in seven starts, with three of those wins. She’ll do.

Ranked annually in the top 100 trainers for wins, earnings, or both for the past eight years, Kieron Magee trains Desbordes for Super C Racing Inc.

Race two is a one mile claiming race on the main track for four-year-old’s and upward that have never won three races. I’m going to agree with the morning line and buy a win ticket on the 2/1 favorite, Jebologist, ridden by veteran jockey Tyler Conner.
This five-year-old gelding finished eleven of his 19 career starts in the money, winning two, giving him the best stats in this eight-horse field. Also, his speed figures have remained consistently high throughout his career.

Race four is a one-mile and 70 yards allowance optional claiming race on the main track for Pennsylvania-bred four-year-old’s and upward. I’m backing one of the fourth-favored entries (there are two at 6/1 in this race)—Interesting Legacy, piloted by Carlos Eduardo Lopez.

This eight-year-old gelding moneyed 24 of his 43 career starts, winning 12. Versus the rest of this lackluster field of six, he’ll do.

Wednesday Picks for Tampa Bay Downs

We’re on the main track for race one, a 6-1/2 furlong claiming race for four-year-old’s and upward that have never won three races. I like one of the fourth-favored entries (there are two at 8/1 in this race)—Professor Dave, ridden by Madeline Rowland.

This five-year-old gelding finished in the money three of his six career starts, winning two, which puts him in the statistical spotlight in this otherwise lackluster six-horse field. For the sack of comparison, Roaring River—the 7/5 favorite in this race—moneyed eight of his 14 career starts, winning two.

Co-owner Michael A. LeCesse trains Professor Dave for Louis A. Bisso Jr. and himself.

Let’s move to the turf course for race five, a one-mile claiming run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’m betting on the 6/1 fourth-favored Deputy Dora, with Isaac Castillo aboard.

This eight-year-old mare finished 27 of her 54 career starts in the money, winning eight. Not stellar, to be sure, but it’s enough to put her in the statistical lead of this nine-horse field.
Her speed figures have remained consistently high throughout her career, and all her victories aren’t in the distant past—she came from behind to win a claiming race here at Tampa Bay just last month.

Deputy Dora is trained by owner and longtime horseracing veteran Anthony J. Granitz.

We’re back on the main track for race eight, a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’m going with the 5/2 morning-line favorite, Bahamian Moon, ridden by top jockey Antonio A. Gallardo.

This four-year-old filly moneyed nine of her 14 career starts, winning three, and she’s been victorious on all types of surfaces—dirt, mud, and grass. She’ll do.

With nearly four decades in the horseracing business, Dennis Ward trains Bahamian Moon for owners Ridenjac Racing and David F. Kegley.

Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Financial System #7, 9/5):

This should be an easy win for Saffie Joseph and Co. He took over the conditioning duties from Jorge Delgado, and the gelding just missed in his 1st start with his new barn in an OC25k @GP back in October. Joseph took that as a sign that the son of Twirling Candy, who just turned 8, was ready for a touch of the limelight. In a "Non-G" he was well-bet, but just missed hitting the board. Now, up for his 3rd race in this cycle, he looks poised to get back to the winner's circle. Ed Zayas is recouping from an injury, so Tyler Gaffalione will be taking the mount. That is not a bad thing ...

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 8: Rosy Apple #2, 10/1):

On the long shot board this Wednesday, I would not overlook Ron Spatz's filly by American Freedom. That might not be a sire you are too familiar with, but I am sure you have heard of his sire ... Pulpit. This filly was attempting to move from an MC50k event up into an OC75k. By the way, there were 3 months in between those contests, and I am betting that fitness was a major factor. This spot seems a bit more appropriate, and I am hoping that her works do her credit. Miguel Vasquez is a jockey who continues to press hard, as he tries to improve race-to-race. His numbers with this trainer look promising, and it is not easy riding against the likes of Saez and Gaffalione. Here is to hoping we get double-digits on the tote ...

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 5: Turf, 1 1/16th, AOC25k, 4+):

If you are out and about on Wednesday, looking for a tough race to handicap and wager on, then this one is a candidate. On the grass at Gulfstream, with a dozen entered, plus some AEs, this is sure to be nothing short of a great betting opportunity. We all know that when trainer Chad Brown is present … the odds are in his favor (ala Hunger Games). Lonesome Fugitive #6, a 5-yr-old horse by Zoffany, comes back to GP after running up at the NYRA tracks. Brown tried this last January with him, and he failed to win as the heavy favorite in a MSW50k event on the grass. That is not a reason to stay away from him (that past history), it is just one of those “facts” to consider. This time around, he gets Tyler Gaffalione in the irons. His 20% win clip during the Champ Meet is looking impressive, despite playing second fiddle to the red hot Luis Saez. Let’s play against Brown and Gaffs, since the public will be behind them in full-force. I much prefer a better-priced horse like Danny Gargan’s Regal Speaker #2 at 5/1 on the M/L. This one is shipping in from NYRA as well, but with what I consider a better class rating than Brown’s entry. As for a few other runners that can round out this ticket, I particularly like the look of Rusty Arnold's Ginsburned #11, even with the lackluster services of Corey Lanerie. This gelding by Noble Mission (GB) is bred for the turf, and the Ashbrook Farm router looks promising at 20/1. An alum of the Bruce D (G1) at Arlington (he was 3rd), he is laden with class to compete with this company. A pair of outside invaders are making their US debuts ... let's use Mark Casse's Arturo Toscanini #4 (alum of The Curragh) and Saffie Joseph's Novo Sol #12 (Brazil). They could be in better form than we might think, and let's face it, they come from excellent barns. Here is the Superfecta ticket that I have put together ... let's cash it!
