Oaklawn Park Picks: Cox's Night Ops running covert ... January 9
          By J.N. Campbell

Oaklawn Park Picks - Sunday, January 9, 2022

          Race 1: 1-4-2-6
          Race 2: 6-11-2-7
          Race 3: 5-2-3-12
          Race 4: 8-10-2-4
          Race 5: 1-6-2-10
          Race 6: 6-2-3-5
          Race 7: 2-5-8-3
          Race 8: 9-4-8-7
          Race 9: 9-1-5-7
**Most Likely Winner: Sarah Harper #2 (Race 7)**
**Best Value: Victory March #9 (Race 9)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: Sarah Harper #2, 2/1):

Here is a nice filly by Vancouver (AUS) that is part of the excellent barn of Ron Moquett. If you do not know much about this Hot Springs-based conditioner, then let me tell you … he does it right. Moquett mixes the latest innovations with tried-and-true methodology. I like this runner because she always seems to come to play, and after 4 starts, I think she can win at this level. The excellent Ricardo Santana gets the call, and we know that it is probably going to be a sloppy mess out there. Best to turn the piloting duties over to a seasoned jock like Santana … he should be able to get this one home.

          Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 9: Victory March #9, 8/1):

Trainer Bret Calhoun does not have a large string at Oaklawn, but he deserves respect. I consider him a class fellow. In this contest he has an uncoupled entry that is pretty interesting. Go West #5 will get bet, but I actually like his higher-priced stablemate. Victory March #9 is a colt by Maclean’s Music (sprint sire, for sure) that was well-bet back in early December. That's when the 4-yr-old got his debut out of the way. David Cabrera was on him then (6th place), and he has a shot to improve in this spot. His recent work tab looks strong enough, even though OP early morning action is tough to interpret. Horses start to figure out what is going on by their 2nd race … I am hoping he sticks around 8/1 on the tote.

          Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #9 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

          Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 1 3/16ths, OC80k, 4+):

A distance test is on the books for Sunday, and it is going to be a good one! Steve Landers Racing has a well-known runner that is going to get back to business in the new year … ’22. Trainer Brad Cox scored yesterday with Coach in the Pippin S., and he sends Night Ops #4 back to the post. The last time we saw this deep router, the son of Warrior’s Reward was pretty far back in the Clark H. (G1). Florent Geroux knows this one through and through, and is going to try and get him out early, in order to secure a nice striking spot. He could be sharp, but my biggest concern is that he has not won since mid-2020. Let’s face it though, he is the class of this field. To be honest, I am not sure anyone drawn in here compares to him on this last point. The only one that comes remotely close is Steve Asmussen’s Tenfold #9. This veteran by Curlin has plenty of “Non-G” Co. behind him, but he is rather like his adversary, he does not win all that often. Asmussen is going to hand the riding duties over to Ramon Vasquez, and he is having a good Meet so far. We know Winchell invests in their own homebreds, and maybe this will be the 7-yr-old’s day. I am calling this one ice-cold … Exacta time! That should fit the bill … Cox v. Asmussen … round …

          Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 9 w 4

Sunland Park Picks: Stakes features on Sunday January 9
            By J.N. Campbell

Sunland Park Picks - Sunday, January 9, 2022

            Race 1: 6-8-9-3
            Race 2: 6-5-8-2
            Race 3: 4-2-5-10
            Race 4: 2-5-7-6
            Race 5: 9-5-10-7
            Race 6: 6-4-3-5
            Race 7: 3-5-2-7
            Race 8: 3-1-6-8
            Race 9: 2-5-3-4
**Most Likely Winner: Guy In The Sky #2 (Race 9)**
            **Best Value: Mark's Warrior #3 (Race 8)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 9: Guy in the Sky #2, 5/2):

In the finale, we are looking at an interesting condition … MSW Co. for 4-yr-olds and up. You find a mixed bag of runners that are drawn in here, but I think I have a winner that can stay for the 5½F. Trainer Larry Chavez has his gelding by Capitol Guy in the right spot. This one has experience after running 3x (once in Ruidoso, 2x in Albuquerque). Even though 2 of the 3 took place in 2020, I think he should be ready to go against this lot. I do not see anyone that can rival this one. It’s a bet.

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

            Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 8: Mark’s Warrior #3, 8/1):

Trainer Todd Fincher has this gelding entered against a number of other runners (4, to be exact) in his stable for this “Non-G.” Out of those, I like this one the best because he has experience against this type of company. Even though this son of Marking failed to fire last out in the Prather S. at Zia Park, I still think he has a strong amount of talent. His workout back in late December speaks to that … .47 @4F. With a large field like this one, and so many options, I think most will overlook his class, and try to play elsewhere. This will be a mistake … let’s take advantage at odds of 8/1, or even higher!

            Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #3 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 5½, Bold Ego H., $65k, F&M 4+):

I like this race quite a bit because it poses quite a puzzle. Going less than 6 furlongs, anything can happen with these older females, and it begins at the break.

When it comes to early speed, you might take a good look at Robertino Diodoro’s Five Pics Please #7. Formerly trained by John Sadler, this former SoCal turfer was switched to become a dirt burner 1st out at Turf Paradise by her conditioner. Bred by Larry Caudill, this daughter of Cinco Charlie (Indian Charlie) was smart in an ALLW Co. event … winning on the frontend. Diodoro then sent her back to the grass for a “Non-G” @Tup (with Karlo Lopez aboard, he is here today) in which she lost by-a-neck. I have no doubt that this one will be running nicely, but I am not sure that accepting 2/1 or lower is good for business.

Speaking of shippers from Arizona, I am sure Bennie Woolley’s Harking #2 will be looked on quite favorably by the betting public. This is an experienced 7-yr-old mare, and both her overall record (18/7-3-4), plus the one at Sunland (7/3-0-2), tells us why it is easy to see her future is bright. Enrique Gomez gets the call, and he has won aboard her before. However, this is a tougher condition, and that could be a factor in her missing out on the score.

One entry that I particularly fancy is from Todd Fincher’s midst. Last out in the Zia Distaff 75k, this daughter of Maclean’s Music was just unable to keep up with the eventual leaders. One of those was Canoodling, an accomplished Fincher runner, that Miss Melody #4 couldn’t track towards the end. Now, we might conclude that her experience from that Zia race could be a stepping stone. She gets Alfredo Juarez, who is already riding at a high-level. You can bet that her conditioner is going to have her ready to fire. Let’s use her on top.

Before we sprint, a couple of others that warrant a look … Dan Blacker’s Eyes Open #5 and Chris Zamora’s Flyin Falynn #1 appear logical, and have the capability to at the very least, hit-the-board. Blacker is a solid SoCal trainer, and Zamora’s entry possesses some hidden class, plus gets Luis Negron. What a race this is going to be … here goes … and their off!

            Wagering Recommendation: .10 Superfecta Wheel, 4 w 1/2/5/7 w 1/2/5/7 w 1/2/5/7

              Today’s Racing Tips – January 9th

There are three meetings in Britain and Ireland on Sunday, with a cracking jumps card at Fairyhouse very much the highlight. The handicap chase at 2.20pm over 2m1f is sure to be hotly contested, with the ground conditions sure to place the emphasis on stamina. Ayr also host an interesting card, while all-weather fans can tackle the new surface at Southwell (where six of the seven races are low grade handicaps).

Rebecca Menzies is enjoying a real purple patch in recent weeks, with 7 winners from her last 20 runners, and this unexposed sort impressed when landing a gamble at Market Rasen on Boxing Day. There is plenty more improvement in the tank after just 5 runs over hurdles, and a 9lb rise in the weights should not be enough to stop a follow up on soft ground that clearly suits ideally.

Sandy Thomson’s winning hurdler was ridden with an eye on the future when finishing a remote third on his chasing debut behind the useful Pay the Piper, and he is likely to improve dramatically on that considerate introduction now in calmer waters. His win last season came on heavy ground, so the expected testing conditions at Ayr on Sunday will be very much in his favour under Ryan Mania.

                Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 9th January 2022
By: Racing & Sports Time published 2022-01-09 at 10:23 AM (GMT +11:00)

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for January 9.

Major TAB meetings today are held at Warrnambool, Nowra, Sunshine Coast and Albany.

                WARRNAMBOOL: RACE 1 @ 1:20 PM

AMALFI SPRITZ (1) resumed from a long spell last start with a good fourth when an odds on favourite behind What A Sham who has since gone to town and ran second to the talented Attractable who looks destined for better races. He'll strip fitter here and looks a good chance of breaking through from a forward position in the run. FEARGAL (3) resuming will make her own luck on speed and can run a cheeky race over this trip fresh up on her home track. Don't take lightly. ANDRESS (7) caught the eye coming from well back for a close second at this track last start when first up. She might be starting to put it all together and appeals each way. MON CHEVAL (6) creates plenty of interest on debut and although he'll appreciate further in time warrants plenty of respect for the O'Brien/Lane combination. CONSISTENT CHOICE (5) is capable of improvement at his second time to the races and is one for the exotics. SELECTIONS: #1 Amalfi Spritz has the form.

                Free Warrnambool Computer Card

                NOWRA: RACE 2 @ 2:10 PM

SPITFIRE (4) has hit the top five in all four starts to date and will find this easier than recent outings. Strips fitter second-up and should appreciate the step-up to 1400m. Is clearly the one to beat. THE HERALD (7) was a close-up fourth on debut at Goulburn and will take plenty of benefit from that race day experience. Looks a key player. PELHAM (3) is facing the starter for the first time but showed enough in a recent trial to warrant consideration in this. Respect any market activity. WOODSON (10) best of the rest in a race with only a handful of chances. SELECTIONS: #4 Spitfire to win.

                ALBANY: RACE 5 @ 3:50 PM

SAASMIT (9) is third-up and was good at Ascot the latest fading late from the speed. Fitter for that and has a 3.5kg weight relief. Looks well-placed to take this out. MR CAUSEWAY (5) was good as favourite and then came home and won the CL2 by a space. The star hoop rides first time and will position the gelding on speed. A winning chance. Stablemate CAN'T GET ENOUGH (8) is fast and also presents off a big CL2 win. Will come over and control the race and is a player. CLASSIC MAGNUS (2) won the CL5 here two weeks ago and also has claims. SELECTIONS: Backing #9 Saasmit.

                SUNSHINE COAST: RACE 3 @ 2:10 PM

MISHANI UNTAMED (4) is third-up seeking the hat-trick off a big win this grade at Ipswich. The 3kg claim has her well placed and she can make a winning debut at the track. MINTO'S PARADISE (1) won at this level by a space and has been good in stronger the two since. Has a key jockey switch to the in-form Brad Stewart and draws for the run of the race. ISIS CARMELLA (2) didn't miss by far here second-up in a 68 bringing a big Open 3 win from Mackay. This is easier and fitter she can't be ruled out. SELECTIONS: Backing #4 Mishani Untamed.

                MORNINGTON: RACE 7 @ 5:15 PM

MYSTERIOUS ART (2) rand his best race beaten 1.3L at Mornington and it was a good effort. On an 8-day return and is the one to beat holding that form. BUTTON PUSHER (6) was back to form beaten 1L first-up at Colac and that reads well. Fitter he's a player building on that. ULTRA SMART (5) has been close up the three runs this campaign and presents today off a freshen. Draws for the run of the race and and is also a chance to break a long run of outs. YANKEE LOU (1) resumes and is sharp fresh. Gets the blinkers again and is worth a market watch. SELECTIONS: Backing #2 Mysterious Art.

                PORT LINCOLN: RACE 9 @ 5:10 PM

CHARGING FIRE (4) did not get all favours last start in his first run on the track and should be better for the experience, he has gone some handy races in the past and with senior hoop Karl Zechnar taking over the reins he could have the last say at nice each way odds in a very open field. CELERITATE REGEM (3) bounced straight back into form last start when finishing third at long odds, he has a better draw today and will be given every chance by Caitlin Jones. Include in all multiples. I'M OH SO PRETTY (6) can be hard to catch but was good last time out when finishing runner up as favourite and should appreciate the extra distance of today's assignment. Having Ryan Hurdle back in the saddle is a bonus and she should be thereabouts. TRIVAGO GIRL (12) has improved her form since arriving on the Port Lincoln circuit and gets the benefit of a 2kg claim this time. She is likely to get back in the running but should hit the line hard. Watch for her late. SELECTIONS: #4 Charging Fire each way.

#5 Renegade Princess was second at this level last time out, which was also her first race going one mile on the dirt. This looks to be her best distance. #4 Awesome Pamela was fourth in the same race as our top pick last time out.

Race 7: Las Cienegas Stakes (G3)
                  freestar

#7 Zero Tolerance will look to make it two in a row in this spot after an impressive win against allowance horses at Del Mar last time out. #1 Tapwater gets back to the dirt for this race after running poorly over the synthetic surface last time out.

                  Race 8: Starter Allowance

#3 Bye Bye Bertie will take a nice class drop to where she belongs today after a poor effort against stakes horses last time out. #6 Bristol Bayou will look to make it three in a row in this spot after winning two races against similar horses in her last two starts.

                  Race 9: Starter Allowance

#3 Miss Tokyo will move back to the turf for this race, where she won two back over this track. #1 Agreetodisagree will look to make it two in a row today after a nice victory at Del Mar last time out.

                    RACE 7: SOUTHERN DISTRICT (#3)

Chad Brown has a pair of runners in this race, of which Winter Pool is likely to attract more support. This 5-year-old gelding was in great form over the summer at Saratoga when facing starter allowance company before losing twice at relatively short odds in his last two starts at this level. However, he may not have appreciated the shorter one-mile distance in those races. He was against a slow pace two back at Keeneland, and then last time he just always seemed to be rushed along over the one-turn trip. Stretching back out to 9 furlongs should be key for him and he seems like a major player. However, I’m more interested in Chad Brown’s other runner at what could be a better price. Southern District tried dirt twice last year after beginning his career on the turf. He was a visually impressive winner of a maiden event at Churchill Downs before running deceptively well against winners on July 15. That Saratoga allowance event featured a very slow pace for the distance and Southern District was never in a comfortable position taking kickback while racing in mid-pack throughout. I have no idea why Chad Brown wanted to go back to turf after those solid efforts, but this son of Union Rags predictably wanted no part of the grass. Now he’s back to the right surface and is facing a field that he should be able to handle. The wild card in this lineup is No Burn, who was an impressive winner of a starter allowance event last time. However, I’m skeptical about the stretch-out, and he has to deal with the early speed of Top Gun Tommy. Waxman seems more dangerous as he stretches out off a maiden win, but Todd Pletcher has merely mediocre statistics with horses like this.

                    RACE 8: BARESE (#5)

G Munning looks like a deserving favorite off his gritty debut victory. He was aggressively ridden to make the lead that day and showed some real determination to battle back for the victory after Bold Journey challenged him in the stretch. That rival returned to win his next start with a 102 TimeformUS Speed Figure, flattering the form of that Nov. 19 race. If he moves forward off his career debut he’s going to be tough for this group to handle. That said, he could have to work harder to make the lead here given the presence of speedy rivals like Unique Unions and Agility to his outside. I’ll be interested to see if his connections are as aggressive once again or if they try to rate him this time. He’s obviously the one to beat, but I feel like he’s going to be a very short price in this spot. Both of those fellow pace rivals have a shot to win. However, I think Unique Unions is stepping up to face a tougher field this time, though he did set a fast pace before fading. Agility has shown potential in his two starts against maidens, and he’s drawn well outside of the other speed. I’d use all of them in some capacity, but I’m most interested in Barese returning from the layoff. This Mike Maker trainee was well-bet when he won his debut back in May and he delivered. He got a little outrun in the early stages, but I liked the way he leveled off through the stretch to get up at the wire. He’s missed a lot of time since then, but he’s worked fast for his return and Mike Maker actually has decent statistics coming off layoffs on the dirt. He should sit a great trip sitting just off those three speeds.

                    RACE 9: HOT STEPPER (#10)

Eminency will be very tough to beat if he builds on his first race. He was pretty chilly on the tote board that day but he delivered a solid performance, running on well through the stretch to get up for second. That seemed like a strong race for the level, and it was flattered when third place finisher Impressionist returned to win with a dominant performance. The fifth-place Bossmakinbossmoves also came back to win with an improved performance. Rudy Rodriguez is a decent 20 for 106 (19%, $1.61 ROI) with maiden second time starters in dirt sprints over 5 years. The only negative is the presence of a rider who hasn’t had much success at this meet, which is a concern given the short price. Some of the other lightly raced runners have a chance to improve, including Bert Bert Bert, but they would really need to step forward to beat the favorite. I’m most interested in Hot Stepper as the alternative. This gelding’s first couple of runs don’t look like anything noteworthy, but he was very green in both races. He actually did some real running at the very end of that Dec. 10 affair, finishing fastest of all once Jose Ortiz realized he actually had some horse underneath him. They took a shot in the $500k stakes last time and he outran his 96-1 odds to finish fourth. He did get a fast pace to close into, but he still was running on best of all late. The 7-furlong clearly works for him, and he has a right to step forward again now that he’s figuring this out. He’s a half-brother to 17-time winner Broadway Bay, who had the same running style. He can be a late threat at a price.

Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Late Pick 4 Analysis

                          January 9, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Hawthorne Racecourse has a 9-race Sunday program with the first post coming at 7:15 CST. The feature goes in Race 6, Leg 1 of the Winter Wonderland Series with a $12,000 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 also starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $15,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                          Race 6

5-Heath Bar (7/2)-Comes off a win back on 11-29 at Oak Grove and has hit the board in 6 of 16 appearances in Stickney with 3 pictures.
6-Swan Of Dreams (3-1)-Similar to #5 winning at the same class at OakGr but on 12-5. Has done good work at Haw booking 3 wins in 14 starts and should be forwardly placed throughout.
9-Joe Joe Joe (12-1)-Qualifier on 1-3 was good and was without hopples. Willing to take a swing for a price versus this crew. Has hit the board in 3 of 4 starts at Haw and has 2 wins. Also, has big track experience at HoP and could post an upset if Wingard can provide a good steer.

                          Race 7

5-Frontier Nancy (4-1)-Has been competitive in Kentucky and Warren has driven there. Should be racing near the top of the stack and fits with this crew. Cause for pause could be the 0-13 record at Haw but has hit the board 5 times and this field is loaded with bashful horses.
6-Amazon Princess (10-1)-Usually in the hunt in Stickney versus this kind and at the morning line price is worth using. Has hit the board in 8 of 20 starts here and has taken 2 pictures.

                          Race 8

3-Fox Valley Lynyrd (9/2)-Team Leonard entry just gets in under the $25,000 earnings condition and should be in the mix tonight.
9-Gamblinforalivin (5/2)-Shows the best speed and is difficult to leave off the ticket. Could be bet down off the morning line and this 6-year-old has made only 11 starts. Does have 2 wins and both have come at Haw.

                          Race 9

4-Meadowbrook Jenny (5/2)-This 4-year-old mare comes off a December win at DTN to break its maiden. Steps-up but there is no reason to blush at the competition.
6-Dilly Dilly Time (6-1)-Leonard should have this mare in striking range and if there is an honest pace chances for success go up. One-move type should be in the hunt down the lane.
8-Found My Rock (4-1)-This mare got in a race this month at MVR and leads the field in earnings. Rates and edge over others due to recent starts and Warren takes the lines looking for the 1st win at Haw in 7 tries.

                          0.50 Late Pick 4

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TPC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
                            *
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 individual
algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100 point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

                            Single: 2-Annaghlasa
Forecast: Annaghlasawas given a run in her debut during the fall meeting, settling in the second flight and then not being knocked about through the lane when winding up a distance fourth in a hot race. Interestingly, she was allowed to gallop out with some vigor and actually was in front of the field midway around the clubhouse turn. The Irish-bred filly makes a major jockey switch to F. Prat, has worked quite well in recent weeks, and appears ready to show her best stuff in this mile grass event for older maiden fillies and mares. At 3-1 on the morning line, she’s a win play and rolling exotic single.

                            Notable Workouts:

Annaghlasa (December 19, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01h TT). Grade: B
Broke off a length in front of Burgoo Alley (5f, 1:00.4h TT) and was slightly second best at the wire without being asked much (workmate breezing), splits of :25.3, :37.1 and 1:01 flat, very good move by a maiden working with a stakes-quality filly. Was given a run sprinting during the fall season and should be much more serious this time around when sent over a distance of ground.

Use (in order of preference): 1-Defense Wins; 4-Charge Cash

Forecast: This $25,000 claiming sprint for older horses drew just a field of five, so there’s not really much to work with. Charge Cash (TOC=5/2; ML=5/2) just won a restricted (nw-3) sprint for $20,000, was claimed by G. Stute, and is moved up a notch is quest of a repeat score that appears to be within his capabilities. Relatively lightly-raced (just 10 starts), the son of Will Take Charge may have a bit more room to improve than the others, so we’ll put him on top in a race that projects to have soft early fractions. Defense Wins (TOC=9/5; M:=5/2), in the frame in five of his last six starts with two wins, is strictly the one to beat. The D. Pederson-trained gelding likes to settle in the second flight and produce a run, and in a small field he should have every chance to do just that. We believe the winner will be one or the other, so both should be included in rolling exotic play, with preference on top to Charge Cash.

                            Notable Workouts:

Defense Wins (December 22, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.4h). Grade: B-
Always willing in the a.m., maintenance move while coming the final quarter mile in :25.3 without much pressure. Looked fine, was hitting on all fours, seeking another mid-level claiming sprint.

Use (in order of preference): 1-Mo Gold; 6-Shut Up Michael; 7-Tuskegee Cat

Forecast: The known element doesn’t impress, so let’s try a fresh face in this maiden special weight turf sprint for sophomores. Mo Gold doesn’t have any fancy clockings on his tab but this son of Uncle Mo appears to have plenty of run. He’s not a big colt but is quick-actioned with plenty of acceleration, so if he breaks running from the rail, the J. Bonde-trained 3-year-old could have a huge say in the outcome. At or near his morning line of 6-1, he’s a gamble. Shut Up Michael was far back routing in his U.S. debut at Del Mar in November but is probably much better than the race shows. The Irish-bred gelding switches to F. Prat, shortens to a sprint, and might be a late threat. Tuskegee Cat showed a bit of ability in a couple of outings last year and this son of Air Force Blue could easily be a much better type this time around. He’s a first-time gelding for new trainer R. Alvarado and will race without blinkers, so there’s a reason to believe he can step forward and be a strong threat. The presence of Johnny V. in the saddle is another plus. All three should be included on your ticket; we’ll press with Mo Gold in the win pool as well.

                            Notable Workouts:

Mo Gold (December 16, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02h). Grade: B+
Moderate final time, but Uncle Mo colt quickened smartly from the three furlong pole to the wire without really being asked much, :11.3 and :35.1 on our watches while displaying a sharp, economic way of going. May be a bit on the small side but seems to have talent. This is the only workout we have on video; he’s recorded two other drills since.

In team gate drill with Win the Day (same time) and Brotherly Love (4f, :49hg) and was second best while ridden hard entering the far turn through the completion of the drill at the furlong pole, splits of :24.3, :48 flat and 1:00.3 on our watches, losing a bit of his steam late. Has some speed but doesn’t look like anything particularly special at this stage, was $195,000 2yo-in-training purchase at OBS last March.

Blinkers, shadow roll, slightly second best outside Jack Sixpack (same time) for P. D’Amato, final quarter in a solid :24.1 without really being asked much. Was far back in U.S. debut over a mile in November at Del Mar but certainly appears capable of better.

Tuskegee Cat (December 13, Santa Anita, 4f, :50.3h TT). Grade: B-
Breezing work outside I know Cash Flow (same time, also well in hand) in easy training track breeze for Alvarado, final three furlongs in :12.4 and :36.4 after going off slowly. Sophomore gelding with a bit of size and scope probably is better than first two Midwest races show. Should improve on this circuit.

Use (in order of preference: 2-T Bones Trick; 3-Lookin for Revenge; 5-Camino de Estrella

Forecast: T Bones Trick (TOC=6/5; ML=5-1) burned money when a no-excuse third in a restricted $10,000 claiming miler at Los Alamitos last month but has a chance to make amends in this modest main track claimer with anything close to his best race. In the money in 18 of 26 career starts, the J. Wong-trained son of Midnight Lute likes to settle in mid-pack and grind away, and in a race in which the fractions project to be normal if not faster, he could get up in time. Though he’s been totally dismissed by the analytics, Lookin for Revenge (TOC=12-1; ML=7/2 is the likely pacesetter, and if not pressured early could take this field a very long way. Far back in a much tougher event in late November at Del Mar, the son of I Want Revenge plummets in class, adds blinkers, retains J. J. Hernandez, and will take them as far as he can. Camino de Estrella (TOC=7/2; ML=3-1) is a two-time winner over the Santa Anita main track, and after finishing second in his comeback after a more than six month layoff, the son of Mineshaft may be capable of producing a significant forward move. In a race that we’re probably not going to get too involved in, these are the three we’ll be including in rolling exotic play.

Use (in order of preference): 4-War At Sea; 5-Admiral Halsey

Forecast: Here’s a messy maiden turf sprint for sophomores that came up lighter than expected. War At Sea is a son of War Front and therefore bred to move up a ton on grass. Today, the R. Ellis-trained colt gets his first chance on the sod and it’s possible he’ll take full advantage of the opportunity. He’s faced much tougher straight maidens in his first three races of his career, so if he can run at all, this is the proper spot to show it. Admiral Halsey adds blinkers and is another that could improve a bunch. The P. D’Amato-trained 3-year-old was a tad disappointing in a similar event in his local debut at Del Mar in November but his first two races back east weren’t bad and if repeated would make him the one to beat. Both should be included in the various exotics; we’ll press in the win pool with War At Sea on top.

                            Notable Workouts:

Win the Day (January 2, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.1hg). Grade: B-
Not a quick type but turned in okay gate drill inside Icy Flavor (same time) and Brotherly Love (4f, :49hg), mostly on his own early and under some coaxing late, splits of :24.3, :48.1 and 1:00.2, about a length clear of ‘Flavor when eased up at the furlong pole. Doesn’t really strike us as a win early type but can run a bit and may want a distance of ground before showing his best.

Forecast: In a rather shallow bottom-rung maiden claiming main track miler for older fillies and mares, Renegade Princess won’t have much to worry about if she can reproduce her most recent runner-up effort at this level at Los Alamitos. In that race, the P. Eurton-trained filly was four lengths clear of the rest, has returned to work well over the Santa Anita main track and is likely to go lower than her morning line of 5/2. We’ll make her a logical rolling exotic single in a race that has little else to consider.

                            Notable Workouts:

Renegade Princess (January 1, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:01.1h TT). Grade: B-
Not a bad training track work for a cheap type, even but best inside Last Renegade (TOC=Even; ML=5/2) (same time) without really being asked much, final quarter in :24.3. Lightly-raced with a bit of improvement in her, eligible to surface in a very soft spot.

Use (in order of preference): 2-Hear My Prayer; 7-Zero Tolerance

Forecast: We’ve identified two main players in this year’s edition of the Las Cienegas S.-G3 for fillies and mares sprinting down the Hillside course. Hear My Prayer (TOC=4/5; ML=2-1) is questionable at the distance – she’s been primarily a five furlong specialist in her career – but with just 11 races (and five wins) on her resume the daughter of The Big Beast may have further room for improvement. She’s most likely the controlling speed, and if she can get away with softer than average early fractions the V. Cerin-trained mare may be able to stay the trip. If not, Zero Tolerance (TOC=3-1; ML=5/2) is the viable alternative. She was a clever winner from softer over this course and distance during the fall season, is solid in the speed figure department, and is a versatile type that can win on the lead or by rallying from the second flight. She’s reunited with F. Prat, under whom she’s won two races, so the daughter of Mizzen Mast is strictly the one to beat.

                            Notable Workouts:

Use (in order of preference): 6-Bristol Bayou; 3-Bye Bye Bertie; 4-Midnight Jamboree

Forecast: We’ll spread this starter’s allowance main track miler for fillies and mares in a race that, in our estimation, doesn’t offer any wagering value. Bristol Bayou (TOC=4/5; ML=8/5) was scratched yesterday in preference to this spot and the V. Cerin-trained mare seems well-placed for a major effort. A three-time winner (from five starts) over the Santa Anita main track, the daughter of Carpe Diem has captured four of her last five starts and can be equally effective on the front end or from off the pace. Regular pilot K. Desormeaux stays aboard, knows her well, and can assess the race-shape in the opening quarter of a mile and choose a strategy. Bye Bye Bertie (TOC=6-1; ML=9/5) was out of her element when overmatched and unplaced in the Bayakoa S.-G3 at Los Alamitos last month but a repeat of her sharp win over this track and distance two races back puts her right there. She’s reunited with “win rider” F. Prat and has the kind of tactical speed that should have her within range every step of the way. Midnight Jamboree (TOC-7/2; ML=5/2) has been away since April but returns protected in a sign of confidence and attracts Johnny V. She’s won off a layoff in the past and she has numbers that fit, so the daughter of Midnight Lute should be included on your ticket as well.

Forecast: The nightcap is another starter’s allowance event, this one over a mile on grass for fillies and mares. We’ll try to get by using just two. Agreetodisagree (TOC=6-1; ML=4-1) is listed at 4-1 on the morning line, and from the good rail post following a game score with a career top speed figure at Del Mar in mid-November the P. Eurton-trained filly should have every chance for a repeat score. A prior winner over the local lawn, the daughter of Runhappy should draft into an ideal pace prompting, ground-saving position and then have her chance from the quarter pole home. Miss Tokyo (TOC=3-1); ML=3-1), a two-time winner over the Santa Anita lawn, is slower on speed figures than our top pick but might inherit the role as the controlling speed and given that trip could get brave and prove hard to down. She’s certain to get plenty of play with the switch to F. Prat.

Jerry Shottenkirk: My Late Pick 4 Ticket Sunday at Gulfstream

                              January 9, 2022 | By Jerry Shottenkirk

Gulfstream Park’s Late Pick 4 on Sunday is headed by a pair of allowance optional claiming races that feature some quick individuals, and those races are sandwiched in between a maiden special weight and a maiden optional claiming event.

The sequence runs from races 7-10, and the suggested ticket this week amounts to $72. Here’s a look at the players:

7th Race (3:37 p.m. ET, maiden special weight)

STELLAR RIDE got a four-wide trip and didn’t show a lot of speed in his debut, but the addition of blinkers and an inside run can help her reverse her fortunes. The Saffie Joseph, Jr., barn is knocking them home in 21 of 91 and runners usually move up in their second start.

Maiden sprint races with many first-time starters make for an extreme challenge in most cases, and this spot is no different. It’s a “spread” event that has many with a legit chance.

Also on the ticket: VETERANS HIGHWAY, OAXACA, FROZEN SOLID, WALKATHON, LAY THE GROUNDWORK.

8th Race (4:11 p.m. ET, allowance optional claiming)

KITTEN MISCHIEF battled out front all the way and dug down deep in the Aqueduct stretch and held on for a neck victory. It was a courageous run for a first-timer going a mile, and he comes back at the same distance, and this doesn’t look like its much tougher than his first one.

Jockey Luis Saez is especially successful on the front end, and that’s where this one will be.

                              Also on the ticket: ELOQUIST.

9th Race (4:42 p.m. ET, allowance optional claiming)

EAMONN has spent much of her time in competitive turf races going long and there’s a good chance she’ll be able to stay within range as she turns back to five furlongs for her first since September. Has done her best running over this turf course, with two wins and two seconds in six starts. It’s a competitive spot that probably requires a few runners on the tickets.

Also on the ticket: KITTEN STREET, SMOKIN RICHIE.

10th Race (5:14 p.m. ET, maiden optional claiming)

TICKET TO HEAVEN gets Saez aboard for her second career starts. She ran evenly in her first one but like will be close-up from an inside post this time and could dig in as she gets her second attempt at the mile and 70-yard distance.

The second often brings improvement from Joseph trainees, and this one can be expected to move up. There’s plenty from which to choose in this one, and this will require a handful on the ticket.

Also on the ticket: LONDON LADY, QUALITY CONTROL, HARD TO IGNORE.

Gulfstream Park 50-cent Late Pick 4:
                              7) #1 Stellar Ride, #2 Veterans Highway, #3 Oaxaca, #4 Frozen Solid, #8 Walkathon, #10 Lay the Groundwork.
                              8) #2 Kitten Mischief, #4 Eloquist.
                              9) #1 Kitten Street, #5 Eamonn, #6 Smokin Richie.
                              10) #2 Ticket to Heaven, #3 London Lady, #5 Quality Control, #6 Hard to Ignore.
                              The ticket: 1-2-3-4-8-10 with 2-4 with 1-5-6 with 2-3-5-6. ($72).
