Monday Myths: Proven Commodities or Class Risers in 3YO Stakes?

          January 17, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

Welcome to a continuing handicapping series for our Monday blog space, “Monday Myths.” Each week I’ll use the power of the Betmix database to take common handicapping assumptions and either support or dispel them with data. Betmix data powers the 1/ST BET app and its features like Angler and Birddog give data-minded horseplayers a treasure trove of information in which to query your own curiosities.

          Assumption:

January and February are when the rising star 3-year-olds make their stakes presence known.

          Background:

As the road to the Triple Crown picks up passengers early in the year, horseplayers are often looking for the next big thing to take on the known stakes players. But you, as bettors, be looking more for the proven commodities at this point or the rising stars?

          Data Points:

I dialed up the Betmix database to look at all 3-year-old stakes in January and February over the past 3-plus years. I sorted each starter by the class of race each horse exited last time out and how they fared in stakes races.

          Overall Findings:

January & February 3-year-old stakes horses exiting maiden claiming races won 4.8% with a $1.16 ROI for every $1 bet.

January & February 3-year-old stakes horses exiting maiden special weight races won 15.8% with a $0.82 ROI for every $1 bet.

January & February 3-year-old stakes horses exiting claiming races won 5.9% with a $0.73 ROI for every $1 bet.

January & February 3-year-old stakes horses exiting allowance races won 10.6% with a $0.58 ROI for every $1 bet.

January & February 3-year-old stakes horses exiting listed stakes races won 13.2% with a $0.64 ROI for every $1 bet.

January & February 3-year-old stakes horses exiting graded stakes races won 17.9% with a $1.01 ROI for every $1 bet.

          Overall Findings:

Graded stakes alumni had the best win percentage by more than 2 points and also the second-best ROI for every $1 bet (note the maiden claiming ROI was principally one $153 upsetter skewing the results). The maiden special weight runners were second-most likely winners , more than 2.5 points higher than listed stakes alumni. But the ROI for the maiden special weight risers was far short of the graded stakes types.

          Bottom line:

Known commodities from the graded stakes ranks are still the best way to go this time of year in the 3-year-old stakes ranks. While the maiden special weight class risers win a solid share, their ROI indicates they’re over-valued by the betting public at this point on the calendar.

You can go into Betmix and run your own queries for a deeper dive into this theory and any that you can create. For instance, which trainers do best in the 3-year-old stakes via various class levels of development?

Best Horse Racing Bets for Tuesday, January 18, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

Underdogs, sleepers, and long-odds surprises—I found them all at the three tracks I surveyed or my Tuesday picks—Mahoning Valley Race Course, Parx Racing, and Sunland Park.

Both Parx and Mahoning Valley yielded up a 7th-favored (is that even a thing?) sleeper, and one of those was at the sweet, sweet morning-line odds of 10/1. Sure, each track gave us one favorite to tout, but the rest were all underdogs.

Don’t forget you can get all the info—including jockeys, trainers, horses, and wagering options—at our top online racebooks.

            Good luck!
My Tuesday Picks for Mahoning Valley Race Course

We’re starting on the dirt track with race three, a 1-1/8 miles claiming race for four-year-old’s and upward. I like the third-favored (at 7/2) High Rolling Dude, ridden by veteran jockey Andrew R. Ramgeet.

This six-year-old gelding has the statistical lead in this evenly matched field of eight, with 30 money finishes in 46 career starts, 13 of those wins.

High Rollin Dude is trained by owner and longtime horseracing professional, Larry R. Reed. Reed has tapped Ramgeet to saddle High Rollin Dude for 11 of his 13 most recent races, resulting in one third-place finish, six seconds, and four wins.

Race six is a six-furlong allowance run on the dirt track for fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won three races. My money’s on the 4/1 morning-line favorite, Joya Brillante, with Guillermo Rodriguez in the irons.
In this 14-horse field, the four-year-old filly Joya Brillante has these numbers: four money finishes in six career starts, two of those wins.

Longtime racing veteran Larry E. Smith—who topped $1 million in earnings last year—trains Joya Brillante for owner Andrew McKenzie. Incidentally, jockey Guillermo Rodriguez had a great 2021, and looks to be building on that success in 2022.

Race seven is a six-furlong claiming race on the dirt track for Ohio-bred fillies and mares three-years-old and upward that have never won three races. I like the 10/underdog, Cee Cee’s Got This, with Edgar Paucar aboard.

In an unimpressive seven-horse field like this one, this six-year-old mare has a better record than the favorite: Six money finishes in 12 career starts, two of those wins. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that her jockey is the top-rated Edgar Paucar.

Cee Cee’s Got This is trained by owner-breeder—and longtime racing veteran—Mary L. Hurley.
            Tuesday Picks for Parx Racing

Let’s start on the dirt track with race seven, a seven-furlong starter optional claiming race for four-year-old’s and upward that have never won three races. I concur with the morning-line: Buy a win ticket on the 3/1 favorite, Divine Miracle, piloted by Ruben Silvera.

This five-year-old gelding moneyed four of his five career starts, winning two. Versus the rest of this nine-horse field, he’ll do.

With more than two decades in the horseracing business, Jamie Ness trains Divine Miracle for owners Morris E. Kernan Jr., Yo Berbs, and Jagger Inc.

Race eight is a 5-1/2 furlong starter optional claiming race on the dirt track for four-year-old’s and upward that have never won two races. I’m betting my two dollars on the third-favored (at 5/1) Unimpeachable, ridden by Silvestre Gonzalez.

This five-year-old gelding moneyed two of his three career starts, winning one—his initial maiden attempt last July. In a field where the range of unsuccessful maiden graduation attempts runs from eight to thirteen, Unimpeachable will do just fine.
With nearly four decades in the horseracing business, Kathleen A. Demasi trains Unimpeachable for her own Pewter Stable and for Spedale Family Racing, LLC.

Race nine is a one mile and 70 yards allowance optional claiming race on the dirt track for three-year-old’s that have never won two races. I like the 8/1 sleeper, Vine Jet, with Abner Adorno in the irons.

This three-year-old gelding has one of the best records in this ten-horse field, and also has something the others don’t: A recent money finish in a stakes race. For the record, Vine Jet moneyed four of his six career starts, winning one. He also finished in third place in last month’s Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes (Black Type) her at Parx.

John J. Dunn trains Vine Jet for owner Felissa Dunn. John Dunn has put Adorno aboard Vine Jet for his four most recent races, including his maiden victory and the stakes race money finish.
            Tuesday Picks for Sunland Park

We’re on the dirt track for race three, a 4-1/2 furlong allowance race on for four-year-old’s and upward. Ignore the 6/5 favorited—that horse hasn’t raced since 2019. Instead, buy a win ticket on the second-favored (at 3/1) Raisebeforetheflop, ridden by veteran jockey Roimes Chirinos.

Todd W. Fincher trains Raisebeforetheflop for owners J. Kirk Robison and Judy Robison. Incidentally, the Robisons also own the morning-line favorite for this race, Bluegrass Faith.

Race six is a 4-1/2 furlong claiming race on the dirt track for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m going with the morning-line on this one and betting my two dollars on the 6/5 favorite, Patriot, ridden by Luis A. Fuentes.
This six-year-old finished six of his 13 career starts in the money, winning five, including his two most recent races at Zia Park. Statistically, he’s got a healthy lead in this eight-horse field.

Ranked among the top 100 trainers for wins in 2020, Casey T. Lambert trains Patriot for Rocky Carter Racing, LLC.

Race eight is a six-furlong allowance run on the dirt track for New Mexico-bred four-year-old’s and upward that have never won two races. I’m backing the 5/1 underdog, Bonfire Party, with jockey Enrique Portillo Gomez aboard.

This five-year-old gelding finished five of his seven career starts in the money, winning one.

Co-owner and twenty-year horseracing veteran Greg Green trains Bonfire Party for R. Dwain Yarbar and himself.

                Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 18th January 2022
                By: Racing and Sports

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for January 18.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Wyong, Moe and Wagga.

                WYONG: RACE 3 @ 3:05 PM

CURRENCY QUEEN (8) is unlucky to still be a maiden with three consecutive placings and strikes a winnable contest here. Placed over this mile trip last time out and drawn perfectly for Reith in gate two. Rates the testing material. BELLEPLAINE (6) has placed at her past couple and looks to be improving with racing. Rates a top-three conveyance. A REAL RIOT (1) gets 3kg off with the claim and is one for the exotics. COSMIC MISS (7) drops back in trip here and should be hitting the line. AMBER ONE (4) best of the rest from the inside alley.
                SELECTIONS: Currency Queen to win.

As a FREE Racing and Sports offer, below is the Wyong Computer Card.

                MOE: RACE 5 @ 3:30 PM
ROSENSTRASSE (4) raced handy and was just pipped first-up and didn't have the best of it. She has more up the sleeve and the lift to the mile suits. Has the handy 2kg claim and fitter should be winning. POLEAXED (3) rates similarly off the 1L defeat first-up and expect him to push over and control the race. He will have come on and will take pegging back. SO HE RULES (2) has been racing in much stronger but has disappointed the last two. Gets some gear switches and back to the mile is likely to suit. A much better effort is anticipated. PINDI PRIDE (6) just missed here this trip and then had excuses in better class. Has the outside barrier but is fully-fit and is in the mix. SARNIA (8) is good enough at best and keep onside.
                SELECTIONS: Backing Rosenstrasse to win.

                WAGGA: RACE 3 @ 3:20 PM

AURORA FLORENTINA (2) is Sydney-trained and will be improved off the two provincial runs. Didn't have much luck this trip the latest and has more up the sleeve. Wins at best and is ready to find it. LUNAR KISS (8) was tracking well before the plain run at Corowa. Peaks now and Cahill's booking suggest she's pleasing. Finally gets a low gate and is a player. BUBBLER (7) just missed here at 1400m and Penza takes over and can manage the sticky gate. Peaks and can make the finish. SHINY ROCK (4) will use the low gate and has switched barns for his fourth race outing. Gets the blinkers first time and like Hutchings booking. He can keep improving.
SELECTIONS: Backing Aurora Florentina to win.

There are three UK meetings taking place on Tuesday, with a brace of jumps cards in the afternoon preceding all-weather action in the evening.

The National Hunt racing comes from the north-east and south-west – Newcastle (12.50-3.55pm) and Exeter (1.10-4.10), with the all-weather fare on the new Tapeta surface at Southwell (4.20-7.50).

Tuesday’s nap is making her handicap hurdle bow at Newcastle and may have been let in leniently by the assessor.
Horse racing predictions today: Newcastle and Southwell

Enda McElhinney’s Tuesday fancies are below. Scroll down to read the expert analysis behind them.

Nap: Oot Ma Way (Newcastle, 1.25) @ SP with Paddy Power

Next best: Carausius (Southwell, 6.20) @ SP with Paddy Power

Other: Kaizer (Newcastle, 3.25) @ SP with Paddy Power

                  Horse racing tips: Newcastle 1.25

This novices’ handicap hurdle over two miles could prove an ideal starting point for OOT MA WAY as she moves into handicaps on the back of an improved showing last time out.

The daughter of Power is trained by Iain Jardine and was twice a winner on artificial surfaces in the autumn at Newcastle and Wolverhampton. She took a couple of attempts over timber to find her feet but comes here after a positive second on New Year’s Day at Musselburgh (1m7½f, good to soft).

That was an improved effort at odds of 50/1. The winner Inca Prince made it all and won more or less as he pleased for Ruth Jefferson, backing up the excellent impression he had created with a decisive Catterick win in December on first start after arriving from Ireland.

Inca Prince is rated 120 and, from an opening mark of 100, Conor O’Farrell and Oot Ma Way should be well placed to build on that showing.

Selection: Oot Ma Way @ SP with Paddy Power
                  Horse racing tips: Southwell 6.20

The old tag of being a ‘Southwell specialist’ needs some revisiting now with the Nottinghamshire circuit some six weeks into a new era on its brand new Tapeta surface, and the old ‘love it or hate it’ Fibresand a bygone memory.

However, it is still a venue where previous form will stand the test and CARAUSIUS has quickly made good on his previous exploits here.

Charlie Hills’ charge made the perfect start when scoring on his first visit in March over 1m 4f before getting outstayed in April over an extended two miles.

He cut no ice in two turf runs either side of a break, but was right back on form here when the new surface was put in play last month, scoring by more than four lengths back over the 1m 4f journey.

He had no trouble under a 5lb penalty soon after despite rising into Class 4 company and another 6lb hike might not be enough to thwart his hopes of a course-and-distance hat-trick under the returning Kieran Shoemark now.

Selection: Carausius @ SP with Paddy Power
                  Horse racing tips: Newcastle 3.25

Our second selection from the Gosforth Park card here is for KAIZER to get back to winning ways.

He finished fifth at Kelso over Christmas in first-time cheekpieces (left off this time) and might not have been ideally suited there in being left to make the running. He does typically like to race handily and perhaps being out in the lead didn’t aid his cause in the new headgear.

He has ground to make up on runner-up Skipthescales from that Kelso clash, but is 3lb better off by way of leniency from the assessor now. He’s very well handicapped on his best form off this mark of 104.

The Ewan Whillans-trained son of Nathaniel is proven at this extended trip of 2m 7½f and beyond, and should be able to sit and track what will be an honest gallop with a few of his rivals here known to like going forward. He’s got valid each-way claims under Craig Nicol.

Selection: Kaizer @ SP with Paddy Power

                      Picks Notes
#1 Tanya's Gem She might be a little cheap for these, but she's in really good form on the rise, and she should be able to get a decent go of things while saving ground on the inside. Interesting enough at a price.
#3 Flattering Ruby She's a good fit with this kind, but she does tend to give away ground late in the lane, making her a bit suspect in the final yards again here at what might be a bit of an underlaid price.
#4 Mad For Fame She caught a tough winner when returning here last month, and she has historically done pretty good work here. Think she is probably along too late to land this, but maybe she boosts the gimmicks at a price.
Race Summary Tanya's Gem looks for a fourth win in a row after easily handling cheaper in recent starts, and her ability to finish a little bit might serve her well in a race where a couple of the main players might be vulnerable late.

                      Penn National - Race #6
                      Picks Notes
#9 Hope Ever Lasting She needs to turn the tables on a couple who beat her last time out, but she has some upside in this second career start and figures for a great trip spying the pace from this wide draw.
#2 Dweller She'll step up after a useful debut run at the $16,000 level, and she is another with some upside after just one run. Think she probably offers a decent enough price while stepping up.
#7 Nyx and Chaos It's a little interesting that they're dropping her in for a tag just after she took a nice step forward and found the exacta with special weight company, but obviously something like that last run would keep her in the mix here.
Race Summary Hope Ever Lasting went evenly after tracking the pace in the debut run, but she might be able to sustain a move a little bit better with that race under her belt. The price should be right.

                      Penn National - Race #9
                      Picks Notes
#5 As You Were She was flat when going short last time out, but she ran okay going two turns in mid-December. She doesn't have a big turn of foot, but maybe she plugs along late to pick up some tiring speed.
#3 Broadway Melody She has had a dozen chances, but she does have some finishing ability in a race where the pace might start to come back a bit late. Drops into a win spot today?
#1 Lola Girl She moved forward nicely when sent around two turns last time out, but I worry she's going to take a bit of heat from this inside draw. Something similar to the last one would keep her in the mix.
Race Summary As You Were looks the part in a spot where her grinding style might play well, as there are some fading types who have had their share of chances already signed on.

                        Picks Notes
#5 SOHO WALLSTREET A Dull but troubled try as the fave, all-or-nothing type off the claim.
#3 GINGRAS BEACH Rallied second over into moderate pace, couldn't reach the favorite.
#1 FOUR-STAR FLASH Steady numbers, steps up off runner-up finish, draws rail.
Race Summary Soho Wallstreet A had little to offer on the cutback to a half-mile oval after he was trapped and shuffled in the 3-hole. But he will offer a better price for new connections tonight and is a wake-up candidate off his prior form against better.

                        Northfield Park - Race #2
                        Picks Notes
#4 TWO OF HARDTS Takes magnified class drop, draws favorably, switches pilots.
#2 RANGERS Z TAM Plagued by bad posts, no excuses in here.
#7 PROLOGUE Failed at odds-on, remains a threat with speed.
Race Summary Two of Hardts gets class relief, fits the conditions well and his four wins last year look good in this field. His recent form is uninspiring but his rivals were a combined 13-219 in 2021. Play 4-2 and 4-7 exactas.

                        Miami Valley - Race #2
                        Picks Notes
#7 GOOD GRAVY Good enough to run past this field after latest try over track.
#4 ROSES N WINE Broke stride in well-bet debut, need not be much.
#2 TELL THE DREAM Paced evenly into slow pace, moves outside in.
Race Summary Good Gravy rallied to finish third behind the favorites after the pace quickened in a :27.4 third quarter. She draws outside but has little to beat in his second start locally. Play a 2-4-7 exacta box.

#4 Love Ya Most Hit the board in a couple of Oklahoma-bred races at Remington Park and drops to her lowest level; lacked some punch last time but should appreciate the return to two turns.
#5 Noumea Was on the board in her last four and looks ready to get back to two turns; can get a good trip from just off the lead.
#8 Aquinas Drops out of tougher races and is well spotted for this one; late mover should be troublesome.
Race Summary Love Ya Most has been in some decent races and is capable of finishing well going this distance and at this low level.

                          Turf Paradise - Race #4
                          Picks Notes
#2 Spendaholic Tired last time in a race that went in 1:07 2-5 for six furlongs, but won two straight going into that one and can get back to winning ways.
#4 Candy Wompus Missed by a neck last time out and can be a big player as she steps up in class.
#6 Tapit At Midnight Was competitive against multiple winners in starter allowance races and could surprise as she tries allowance company.
Race Summary Spendaholic is rapid and can get to the lead here; she usually tough to catch when that occurs.

                          Picks Notes
#2 American Bourbon Was an easy winner on turf at Golden Gate last out and finds a good spot for her first here; does well on the front end and on grass.
#5 Mongolian Winow Has rallied in some of her races and was third last out; can make a late run with this fast pace.
#1 Loopy Set the pace and held on last time and will continue to the pace again; has won two local grass races.
Race Summary American Bourbon was sharp in a win over decent company at Golden Gate and has the courage to dig in when challenged.

The long weekend is over and it is back to regularly scheduled programming on Tuesday. For an early weekday card in January, this one looks more normal than what we had yesterday. I wouldn’t mind if we saw Santa Anita Park more often during the early stages of the week.

BetOnline has five races on the track at the racebook, with four thoroughbred and a quarter horse meet on the schedule Tuesday. We’re less than two weeks away from the Pegasus in Hallandale Beach at Gulfstream Park.

There is a $3,000,000, $1,000,000, and $500,000 race in the Pegasus on the biggest day of the calendar for Gulfstream Park. You aren’t going to find anything of the sort this afternoon, but hopefully winning horses at Louisiana Downs and Parx in Philadelphia.

If you want quarter horses, consider checking out our Louisiana Downs page. Parx is putting on ten races for $301,000 on Tuesday. Head below for our best Parx Racing picks on January 18, 2022.

                            Purse:$42,000

Race 3 is a $42,000 event covering 6 ½ furlongs on the dirt. Reid’s Fangirl and Misty Mauve should have a strong presence heading to the wire.

Reid’s Fangirl finished 3rd, 5th, 5th, 3th in four races. The filly most recently showed 3rd on November 20 in a $50,000 assignment. This was after finishing 4th on October 17 in a $32,000 race.

Which Reid’s fangirl shows up this afternoon? If the filly runs how she did in her most recent attempt at $50,000, there has to be some consideration for her to win.

Misty Mauve is winless after finishing 2nd as a first-time runner on December 13. It wasn’t a bad attempt from Misty Mauve, as she placed 2nd behind Divine Huntress by 2 ¼ lengths in a $42,000 event on December 13.

Another run like that should be good versus this competition. She looks open to improvement in her second race as well. I’d consider a win bet on the No. 6.

                            Purse:$19,000

Race 4 covers 1 1/16 miles on the dirt. Majestic Sky and Will Take Control should have a strong chance to score on Tuesday afternoon.

Majestic Sky is winless in ten attempts, finishing 4th, 2nd in his previous two races. His most recent races have been improved after going 6th, 6th, 11th, 10th.

In his last assignment, Majestic Sky placed 2nd behind Verranzo Bridge by 4 ½ lengths in a $23,000 event. It was nice improvement after going 4th on November 15 for a $32,100 purse.

Will Take Control is winless in six races, finishing 7th, 8th, 3rd in his last three. After a transfer to Parx, Will Take Control has appeared to settle in.

Will Take Control most recently showed 3rd on December 8 for a $23,000 purse. He wasn’t that far off and looked more competitive than at Aqueduct and Gulfstream Park.

In his latest workout, Will Take Control looked sharp with a time of 1:00.71 at 5 furlongs on January 12. He drew a fortunate post and should benefit on Tuesday afternoon.

                            Purse:$42,000

The fifth assignment at Parx is a $42,000 event covering 6 furlongs. Crabs N Beer and Mr Sandman are going to be competitive. That’s the plan at least.

Crabs N Beer has finished 1st, 2nd, 7th in his previous three outings. He was a winner with a blowout 9 ¾ length win on October 16 in a $22,00 event.

Crabs N Beer came back to place 2nd behind Dontcrossfuzzy by a nose for a $46,000 purse. Following that performance, Crabs N Beer finished 7th in the $100,000 Maryland Juvenile Championship Stakes on December 18.

Mr Sandman has finished 7th, 4th, 2nd, 1st in four career races. The colt placed 2nd behind Capt. Candy by 3 ¼ lengths in a $42,000 event. That was a great step forward for his career.

Following that attempt, Mr Sandman beat Secret Alliance by 2 lengths in the same grade. He keeps showing improvement and should have the edge on Crabs N Beer if continuing in this direction.

Crabs N Beer should be tough, but Mr Sandman likely has him at the wire in the final furlong.
